We had to try it because we saw the outdoor area is always packed. We were not disappointed! Ordered the Pad Thai, green curry with chicken, Thai Iced Tea, and the Mango Sticky Rice and ate outside. Curry was quite flavorful though it wasnt all that spicy. Pad Thai and Thai Iced Tea were yummy as well. The mango sticky rice was really great though and the thing I liked best. Would definitely return even if just for the Iced Tea
Cant believe my bf took me to this place just today. He shouldve introduced me to here earlier!🤣 The food is superb 😍. The curry noodle with crispy pork on top was amazing. Tom Yum was also great (as a hangover cure). If we werent suffering from hangover, we wouldve ordered sake or beer for the duck dish (under Isan section). The portion was pretty big but we managed to finish all dishes! 😎
Food is great, but water tastes funky. So does the ginger ale. The fried coconut ice cream tastes like French fries and ice cream and honey mixed together. NOT GOOD COMBO. Overall food is 8/10, employees are 11/10 (very respectful), but the drinks and ice cream, 3/10. Would recommend but bring your own water and don’t order the coconut fried ice cream.
They offer beautiful outdoor seating with umbrellas. We did have to wait half an hour for a table outside on a Thursday around 6 pm. Staff was friendly and took our orders promptly. The food was tasty but I did find my seafood dish a bit too saucy. I didnt order the side of rice though. The pad Thai was yummy and my friend enjoyed her drunken noodles. I recommend it!
This restaurant is located near the t stop at porter square. We ordered three appetizers and three main courses. Highlights of the meal were the sausages and drunken noodle. Crispy duck was a little tough to chew. Everything else were just fine. However, it took way longer than other Thai food places. We were still waiting for the main courses after 40 minutes, so please adjust your expectations properly.
FoodHow did it take me so long to try this restaurant?! It had been on my want-to-go list for months. I am glad I finally tried it, and then came back twice after that. The menu is overwhelming, but almost everything we have ordered so far were delicious. I don’t know how they pull that off and I don’t think there are many restaurants can do the same when they have a big menu. Here are a few of our favourites. Sai Ua, Pad Ped Gai Grob, Chili Basil Noodle, and Mango Sticky Rice.Everything elseThe reason I gave it a four star is because of the service. I understand due to COVID, it is hard to hire people, but if the restaurant charges me more tips, I expect a decent level of service.
First time at this place, very conveniently located right next to porter square, so easy to get here via train. Also if you have car, you could park near the star market/Michaels that has a lot of parking spaces. We got in queue through Google wait list and got a seat inside the earliest but outdoors looked great too. For food we ordered the som tom Thai as an app salad to share which was very good with lots of fresh shredded green papaya and a lot of fresh red and green chili, its not for the faint hearted who cant eat spicy food. This was my favorite of all..we also ordered a sukiyaki and a boat noodle soup for entrees. I only had the sukiyaki which was a large portion, freshly made and delicious as well. We had ordered two alcoholic drinks which were ok and the alcohol content was pretty negligible, probably should have ordered bubble tea. The only thing that bothered me a bit was fruit flies neat our food, so had to keep warding them off. But I would still recommend this place as food is good and easy on the pocket too.
Cute spot and has an amazing variety of food. The menu is divided into regions of Thailand which makes it even more amazing. Definitely try their frozen drinks. Totally worth it. Recommend Piña Colada drink. The creamy Tomyum soup would have been better with a bit more cream. Was more spicy and lemony. I loved the large shrimp on top. The Vegan Tari dumpling was nice. What I absolutely loved was their crispy pork belly gaprow on rice. One of the best things I’ve tried. We order Thai custard for dessert and it was really bad. Very sweet and coconutty. The overall experience was good and will definitely try again.
Sugar & Spice Thai is one of my favourite restaurants to come and eat! I’ve come multiple times here and I can never get enough of their food, I’m bias because I love Thai food. They never disappoint with their crispy giant squid, hence why we always come back because my group of friends and I always order this with pineapple chicken rice, and that by far is one if our favourite combos. The squid isn’t too rough or too squishy, and I love the presentation of when they cut the squid for us. And the red hot sauce that comes with it is a good compliment. The squid here is by far one of my favourite that I’ve eaten and tasted. It’s good enough to make my vegan friend become pescatarian everytime we come here and eat. In addition, the rice is cooked well! And chicken and pineapple do go together. You get sweet and savoury at the same time. I’ve always loved the atmosphere at S&S, and the hostesses are always nice to their customers making sure they are served properly. I know I’ll eventually try various of their food entres and such but for now I haven’t gotten bored of eating what I’m comfortable with. If it ain’t broken don’t fix it haha.
Ordered the chicken bulgogi lunch box. Rice and noodles were cold, undercooked and lacked flavor. Iced Thai milk tea was delicious though. Would recommend seating outdoors because it felt they forgot the patrons that were seated inside
This place is always a disaster, waited an hour for indoor seating and they stood us to the side when it was ready. They forgot about us and gave the table to someone else, then said we had to wait another 40 min.Next time I tried getting take out, they couldnt find my online order then found it and the food was 20 min late.Awful service, okay food. Lemon Thai and Thailand Cafe are much better.
What isn’t there to love about Sugar & Spice?! The food is absolutely delicious, the staff and service goes above and beyond, and they have indoor and outdoor seating! Boat noodle soup, fresh rolls, chicken basil fried rice, and mango sticky rice are my favorites. But you’ll be happy with anything you order! Love. Love. Love this place!
This place... is amazing. Literally every dish is amazing and cooked with love. You can tell this place is authentic, and they care about every aspect of your experience. Since Ive been in Boston this is my go to place, to bring both friends and family. I would give it 10 stars if I could.
I ordered Udon noodles per their menu, when I got there to pick up my order I was told they didn’t have any udon noodles, very disappointed.
By far one of the worst pad Thai’s I’ve had. Absolutely no taste and extremely oily. I’m not sure how they got it all wrong but it had no taste what so ever… lacked any peanut sauce and was just full of oil. It was my first time trying the place and more than likely it will be my last time coming here. I’m not sure about the other foods they have but the pad thai is a no go. 👎🏼
BEST ICED THAI TEA EVER!! Anytime I’m near the restaurant I have to stop and get iced Thai tea because it’s the best I’ve ever had!! I rave about this place to anyone and everyone asking for restaurant suggestions. Not only is it my favorite Thai restaurant in town, it might be my favorite restaurant overall! I first tried it when I was visiting boston earlier this year and since having moved here I go there at least once a week! I took my sister there once and she ate every last grain of her basil fried rice (and she’s one to always have leftovers).
Red curry was good! A bit light on sauce but high on flavor and plenty of meat, which is nice. I wish the Tom Yum soup was a bit more flavorful, it tasted a bit bland to me (I prefer Kor Tor Mor’s version, personally).
Good food and service but the place is not clean. I saw couple of roaches crawling on the seats. There are a lot of flies in restrooms which are located right beside the kitchen. Some flies just came down for a swim in my beer glass. Very unhiegenic. If you still want to try it, better take a seat outside.
Im giving it a 4 because of the way they handle takeout and delivery services. They let the crowds of people waiting for their orders to crowd in. I was sitting at a table near the front, and people were right on top of me.Food is fantastic and so is the staff!
Everything was excellent. Presentation was beautiful and price was surprisingly low for everything we got.Got 2 noodle dishes, 1 vegan rice dish, 2 appetizers, 1 soup and 2 Thai teas and was 85 ish before tip.Definitely recommend!
Solid pad see ew. I like that they have gluten free options. However, some of their food is a tad on the oily side.
Extensive vegan menu, extremely delicious and spiced Thai cuisine. The Simply Sunrise pancake is amazingly crisp, and the Tofu Sukiyaki is a great glass noodle dish with deep spices.Second visit: The vegan Pad Thai was amazing (forgot to order spicy), and the veggie dumplings are perfect.Third visit: The vegan Drunken Noodles was a great portion, but I wish more of the sauce that the noodles had was also on the veggies, which were steamed. The Crispy Taro was amazingly light and fresh for a fried appetizer, good balance to the heft of the dumplings.
Second visit. Called the restaurant to order take-out. I’ll definitely give a 8 out of 5 to the amazing food: including the tom yum, pad Thai and I believe everything on the menu👍🏼 I feel that I wanna try everything here. However the woman who was on the call had a really bad attitude. Very rude and disrespectful. Almost yelling to me with her bad temper from no where. I really was very excited and eager to get food from this place, but this call ruined my experience and is far always from my expectations of this amazing restaurant. Really hope some improvement on the service standard.
The food is great. But I have had to many issues. FIRST AND FOREMOST. THEY HAVE TO STOP PUTTING THE DUCK SAUCE FILLED WITH DUCK SAUCE IN THE ACTUAL FOOD PLATE. MY PINEAPPLE FRIED RICE MELTS THE PLASTIC EVERY TIME BEFORE I GET HOME. I DONT WANT TO EAT PLASTIC. LAST TIME THERE WAS EGG SHELLS ALL IN MY FOOD!!! AND I CALLED TO INFORM THEM THE PLASTIC MELTS, PLEASE DO NOT PUT IT IN THE CONTAINER. LONG BEHOLD, THE DUCK SAUCE CONTAINERS IN MY PLATE. I HAD THEM REMOVE THEM, AND SHE DECIDED TO GIVE SAME CONTAINERS TO ME. SO BY THE TIME I GOT HOME. I HAVE DUCK SAUCE SWIMMING IN A PLASTIC BAG. ITS OK TO MESS UP. BUT DONT GET UPSET AT ME WHEN IM PAYING FOR A SERVICE
Food was awesome. Highly recommend if you are in the area. Service was great!
Authentic and tasty dishes with a lot of options for vegetarians! Great selection of sweet and savory dishes and it all tasted very fresh. Loved the beautiful flowers and decorations in the outdoor seating area.
This place serves truly authentic Thai cuisine which is a rare find in Boston area. I personally just know few places who do that. The combination of flavors one can find in S&S dishes is remarkable. What we also like is that their menu is split into parts corresponding to different parts of Thailand. That may help to figure out what spices are used and how hot the dish is. In particular, we like deadly spicy stuff, so we didnt regret ordering from Southern part. Though, Im sure everybody can find something for his/her taste in the menu. Anyway, if you want to step away from beaten path and try really authentic Thai cuisine then S&S is definitely place to go!
Excellent setup with ample outdoor seating in a beautiful area of the city. Plenty of vegan options with some excellent sauce and perfectly cooked crispy tofu! Absolutely loved the meal and fresh made bubble tea. Definitely recommend!
I ordered the Pad Thai - Thai Hot. Not only was it not spicy, it had absolutely no taste at all! Very disappointing to go to a Thai place and have this experience with such a signature dish.
The Kanom Jean Nam Ngiao is the best Thai dish Ive ever had!!
10 out of 5 stars. The food is amazing, including the mango sticky rice which was about the best I’ve had. Highly recommended!
Ordered three dishes, none of which was really good. Crispy Basil Chicken was not crispy, nor did I see more than 1-2 pieces of basil. Instead, it had peas and carrots (frozen or can) and pineapple. Really gross and not spicy or crispy. Got the Nom Tuk beef salad which I get almost everywhere. It didnt taste anything like I have ever had and it wasnt good. Top it off that they packed orders to send to a hotel with no utensils or napkins. Horrible experience. And to think, I waited over an hour and a half for this. Food didnt look like the pictures. Be warned.
Their food quality is good and tasty. Even though not very authentic Thai food and seems like fusion but I like their food.
I love the Thai here. The best or close to the best in all of Boston. My usual is the Boat Noodle Soup, it is consistently delish every time.
Outdoor and indoor seating . Yummy food . Friendly staffs . Come and check it out . You will love it .
Very good Thai food. Some dishes are extra spicy just the way they should be. So if you see 3 Chilis, be warned. No joke. Currys are super tatsy. This might be our new Thai spot. Certainly are coming back to try more delectable and spicy food. Nice and friendly staff adds to the experience. They also have a nice outdoor seating area.
Great menu selection and friendly staff but the food was a bit too sweet
Theyre very gluten free friendly and have a really nice staff who patiently worked out an issue from a Toast app order.
Incredibly vibrant flavors, melding well. Fried dishes were crisp and not too oily, sauces were flavory but not cloying. Outdoor seating was pleasant, surprising given it was right at the heart of commercial Porter Sq.
Really like the way Sugar & Spice is going with their menu. Food is categorized by regions of Thailand (Northern, Central and Southern). We got Boat Noodles and Chicken on Fire. If I went again, would probably only get the chicken for a large group. Was a little extra for just my girlfriend and me, but made for a great photo! The boat noodles were wonderful for the cold day. It was perfectly spicy and sweet and comforting.
Not the best place for vegetarians. But for meat-eaters, one of the best Thai restaurants in America (and Ive been to too many!)
We enjoyed a delicious meal here! There was an entire vegan menu as well as gluten free menu which was a pleasant surprise. We ordered: vegan pad Thai, vegan kow soi, vegan massman curry and seafood my love. All delicious! We ended the meal with mango and sticky rice which was a perfect ending. The service was great and I would highly recommend to any Thai food fans!
Excellent food in both taste and presentation. Poor poor service, inadequate staffing for the amount of tables. Must reduce seating capacity until labor shortage has passed!
Lovely boxed lunch, hot, generous, flavorful. Noodles, beef teriyaki, dumplings, salad, miso soup, rice. 13 dollars, prompt, friendly service.
OH MY GOD!!!! I never write reviews but this place deserves a 1000000000000 stars!!! The most delicious vegan, gluten free Thai food I’ve ever had. The mango sticky rice is to die for. I’m in food heaven. The crab fried rice is 10000/10!! The salads are delicious and the panang curry was the most flavorful, yet balanced curry I’ve had. I wish I could eat here every day.
Good food. Good service. Nice location. Cute outdoor seating
Outstanding meal, food was delicious, fresh and authentic Thai cuisine. Staff were friendly, menu extensive a d really great value !
I have ordered twice from this place recently, both times the orders were wrong and one of the times the order was missing whole dishes. Both times calling back the people seemed like that is just a normal night for them and offered a refund, but the refund never actually comes. The food is tasty, but not worth the hassle. Also the second time ordering the food was 1.5 hours late. Ive had enough. There are better local Thai places!
Great variety of meals. Good food.
Stopped by somewhat near closing, but they kindly offered a spot on the patio, and we didnt dally ordering.Their menu is fairly extensive, but well organized. Ordered a pork dish that I found out later had 86ed, so rather than waste time, I asked for her suggestion and tried the ba mer haeng-- a spot on noodle dish!
Their dishes can vary in tastiness but I overall really like them. Very quick pick up and high quality food!
Delicious, and love the outdoor patio space. So nice, and no wait for a weekday lunch table.
My go-to place for Thai food in the Cambridge and Somerville area! I love that they have so many unique choices that aren’t found on the typical Thai menu. Takeout portions are always generous.
Good is tasty and worth the drive. Will come back soon.
The top of the list of things I dont trust include people with slimy handshakes and restaurants with menus that are too big. I was admittedly a little skeptical before getting takeout from here, because the menu seemed massive. No restaurant is great at making everything.Im willing to admit I was wrong. Some of the best takeout packaging and portions Ive had in 2020. Food was really great too! Easily became one of my favorite Thai restaurants in the city.
Amazing Thai food that samples the cuisine from across the country. I’ve been to many Thai places, but this stands above.
The pad thai tasted sour and old. the other food was quite good though. but why is the pad thai sour ??
This place came recommended to me and I’m just not feeling it. I ordered 2 Tom Yum with chicken and they came with shrimp instead and it tasted like water. I also got the massaman beef curry and it was over $16 and didn’t come rice. Not a huge deal but I expected so much more. The pad see ew was OK.
Excellent for dine in and takeout, great curry and pad thai
Today when i picked up my food, there was several pieces of hair in my noodles. This is unacceptable and very unsanitary. I would not recommend this is very disgusting and shouldn’t happen.
Before reading my review I would like to say I grew up in Thailand. So this review is written as a Thai person who wanted Thai food... something that tastes like what I would eat in Thailand, a good balance of sour salty sweet and sometimes spicy.I arrived at this restaurant with great expectations due to great reviews, all the accolades and colorful pictures on instagram. I hoped to find flavorful, authentic dishes. Sadly, all I got was a feeling of being instagram catfished and a craving for more ... Spice? As the name suggests, they surely put sugar first and spices last. Everything I tasted has a predominant sweet flavor. Dont get me wrong, I am a sweet tooth, but certain dishes just are not meant to have that sweet taste. Even dishes that were supposed to be more on the sour or salty side. There were no condiments so we could not try to salvage our food ourselves. The service was not all that great either. After ordering, the waiter came to us twice, each time telling us there would be an extra fee for a dish we ordered. After that, we were ignored, she did not come to fill our water cups or ask if things were fine. What disappointed me the most was the ข้าวยำ (gao yum) dish I ordered (see picture below) Somehow, I do not know how, they manage to make the fried chicken have no taste whatsoever. Not even the chicken flavor or the oil flavor. Although the dish tasted very healthy and refreshing, it was not the taste I came to this restaurant for. What also baffled me was the fact they forgot to serve me the sauce for this dish. So the first time I had this dish was without the sauce it was supposed to come with. And believe me, it was as bland as eating only butterfly pea flavored rice with some texture, cause that is essentially what I did. I do not know how, no matter how much lime I dripped on it, it kept tasting like fragrant sweet rice. I only realised they forgot to serve me the sauce when I got tired of eating flavorless food and asked to put it in a to go box so I could go home and flavor it myself. So imagine my surprise the next day when I opened my to go box to see a little container with sauce, that tasted... You guessed it, sweet!!!!!!I guess my review sounds pretty harsh, but that is only because I came with expectations for bold flavorful balanced food. The food never tasted bad. It just lacked flavors for me.. maybe this is their concept, I could see people liking these flavors, especially those who like to eat a healthy and refreshing dishes. They have an extensive menu, with great vegan options. And like I said, they offer so many dishes, maybe we were just unlucky to order the three dishes that were just not that authentic. It is a very innovative restaurant afterall. Everything looks great, hell look at that dish, it is so colorful and pretty. So would I recommend this restaurant? Yes, to certain people. I might even come back for more refreshing food. But this is not a go to restaurant when I crave authentic Thai food.
Lived in Thailand for a year, most authentic place weve found.Great service. Great food. Great portions. Highly recommended!
Sammi was so wonderful to speak with on the phone. She helped me figure out a giftcard issue. Thank you!
Excited Thai d
Great place! They have many authentic dishes and lean spicier than most Thai restaurants in the Boston area.
Delicious, well-made food. Great service. Street parking if youre dining in.
Very disappointed!! Very bad service!!!
I love this restaurant! It was recommended to me by a friend a few months ago and I have been getting food from them frequently since - the curry is top quality and they have great vegan options :) I went last night for a takeout order and it was absolutely packed. The phone was ringing nonstop with orders and questions, and the waiting area was filled with people picking up their own orders, along with DoorDash and UberEats drivers. The staff were doing a great job handling the craziness of running a popular restaurant on a Friday night during quarantine. It was clearly stressful with that many orders and impatient customers, but the staff kept their cool and got orders where they needed to go. Its important to take a minute to appreciate the hard work that goes into running a takeout and delivery operation during quarantine, last night I got a glimpse into how high pressure it can be, and I applaud the staff at Sugar & Spice for pulling it off. Support your local businesses!
Scallion pancakes with Curry Sauce is exceptional!
Once upon a rainy day in New England, a man stood at a bus stop waiting for his ride to appear through the misty rain. A delicious smell wafted into the mans nose...and he was drawn towards Sugar and Spice. He sat, he ate, and as the warm ramen liquid and accompanying protein flavor bombs descended to his belly, his mood was brightened, his spirit lifted. He bid the friendly server farewell and his life was just a bit brighter from that time onward. Im that man. And I suggest you eat here. The Tom Yum ramen is really something special. 10/10, would rainy day Thai soup again.
Its challange to get Thai vegan food without compromise in flavor n spice.Sugar n spice handles both in amazing food.I never had such amazing Thai (Vegan) choice which had spice, level 5 hot and amazing flavor.Would recommend to anyone looking for Thai in vegetarian or vegan
Fast service but the pad thai was very bitter and darker.. too much sauce* to be editedI’ll give it another try
Food was delicious and presented beautifully!! Wait staff was super nice as well. Great prices too :) We loved it.
Went there for lunch because an Indian friend recommended it to us. The service was great, but the curry came with little curry sauce, minimum spice - even though we asked them to make it as spicy as possible. The vegetables in the curry looked like something reheated from frozen package. It was a huge disappointment, will not visit again.
Fast serving and food was excellence!!!
