I’m having to post this review again because they deleted my previous review. Literally all the employees have zero customer service skills at all and will only help you, let alone be pleasant, if they know you or they know you’re going to spend a lot of money. Took a rifle in here to get it worked on and absolutely refused to even look at it without providing an explanation as to why they wouldn’t. Also I am in the military and was in uniform so it seems that they hate the military community, even though I was prepared to spend hundreds of dollars on a repair. I would imagine all the positive reviews are from employees or very long time customers.
Really hate to see all the negative feedback on here. It’s hard enough to run a family owned business these days without people posting false information. I’ve been here and bought guns and sold guns with no problem the staff is always helpful and friendly. If you want to support local and buy guns and ammo etc. from a good business come here. If you need to be coddled and babied through the process I’d try maybe a big box store
This place a waste of time I was only aloud to buy two boxs of ammo but other guns stores told me I can buy as much as I want! Plus how can you work at a gun store and know nothing about guns This places is a embarrassment to the Second Amendment!!!
I visited Carolina Rod & Gun on 01/13/2021 to make a purchase on ammunition. Upon walking in the store being the only Black person in the building I felt a bit uneasy after everyone turned and trained their eyes on me. There were about 9 employees working behind the counters and all other customers were White. No one acknowledged me, greeted me or made any courteous remark to assure me of service. Instead I waited a long period of time in line to be serviced, once I saw other White customers come in the door behind me while I was still in line getting greeted with a hearty welcome and going right to the counter to get serviced ahead of me. I decided it was time for me to leave as I wasnt going to get be serviced here. I felt as though the Jim Crow Laws had been re-inacted literally while I was in this place. This business is all but saying NO BLACKS ALLOWED. Clearly they are getting away with it thus far but, I will ensure that they dont continue to treat Black Customers this way if they are going to do business as a public accommodations in Charleston. When I left the worst happened, I went to the parking lot and began filming the store and a White Male in a White F150 pulled a firearm out and pointed it at me from his truck because he was upset that I had been trying to video the store for its violating my Civil Rights as a Black Woman trying to shop in their store. All of this resulted in police presence and the store denying that I ever visited their store and immediately defended and shielded the man that pulled the gun out on me, refusing to identify him with the police since he left the scene. Police supposedly issued a BOLO but, we later discovered the White Man is a regular customer and is at the Carolina Rod & Gun store on a weekly if not daily basis.
Me and my son walked the store waiting to be helped after store clerk finished with a previous customer as we stood at counter another customer came in and they helped him before helping us me being a black man who served his country in 101st made me feel like this country and my service means nothing. And yes the customer was white as to all the employees and customers were.
Great place. Knowledgeable friendly staff .Support your family owned businesses!
Found out they arent pro-2A. Signs posted on the door and all. How are they a gun shop and anti-gun? Not taking my business there anymore.
I used to do business here over four years ago without a hitch. The Army sent me to Europe for four years, and I just now returned to the States. I arrived only a few days ago, and visited the store to purchase a rifle for deer hunting, and requested help in getting a hunting licence. Brian was the most helpful, professional, and knowledgeable. In less than 20 minutes I was well equipped with both knowledge and equipment, ready to catch deer. It is like i never left, definitely one of my favorite stores of the Lowcountry.
Never had a problem in 10 years. I’ve purchased several firearms from them. Jim is awesome and has been able find things for me I couldn’t find anywhere else locally. All the rest of the guys have been helpful with various information to help me make good decisions over the years and saved me some money.
Only gun smith that would look at my FN509 - really appreciated their time and conversations.
Rude and pricey. 50 bucks for a firearm transfer is ridiculous. There is a decent selection of guns but most are priced above high retail.
Been in the shop several times. Stopped by looking for a classic collectable handgun and they just happened to have exactly what I was looking for at a very fair price. Knowledgeable staff, exceptional selection and an easy to get to location. Certainly a first stop when shopping.
Moderate prices good selections peaceful energy overall 4*s
Knowledgeable, professional staff. Great experience
Took a shotgun to get worked on by the gunsmith stovepipes every round he said that there isnt anything wrong with it without test firing or pulling apart... Acted like I didnt know how a pump shotgun worked. Very poor customer service the past few times iv been in there
Ive shopped at carolina rod and gun 36 years of the 41 years it has been in business and have had outstanding service. There was a gentleman named Ron and he just like all employees here were friendly and very knowledgeable and willing to help in anyway they could to make sure u got what u came for. Stop by and ask for Jim or Neal and I bet u will find this the place to shop for all of your firearms and hunting supplies.
Nice staff, good selection. Pricey...
Extremely poor customer service! Go somewhere else!
The staff as very helpful and took the time to explain what to consider before buying anything and made everything easy and simple, would definitely recommend to anyone.
Called these guys up to ask how much they would charge to install night sights on a SD9VE. The guy said anywhere from $90 to $120. When I told him that sounded kind of ridiculous, he started lecturing me about how complicated it is and how I dont understand the process. I took it to Atlantic Game & Tackle who were happy to do it for $20. The handful of other places I called before settling on Atlantic were all saying $25-$40.Dont get me wrong, Im a proud capitalist. Every business can charge what they want but 3x-4x what everyone else is charging? Thats just a business knowingly trying to rip people off. Pretty sleazy. Ill never step foot in this store.
Stopped by your store yesterday with a rifle that had a round stuck in chamber. They fixed for me at a record speed and did not charge me. What service! Thank you very much it is greatly appreciated
Ive been in and out of Carolina Rod and Gun many times. Despite being packed and every guy there working his butt off, they still take time to talk to you and help you with whatever you need. Their prices are the still competitive, despite the demand. They wont jack up prices since everyone is buying guns. They also have a great selection of new and used guns, and their used guns are in great condition. They wont sell you junk. I will keep going back to Carolina Rod and Gun.
Really supprised by the positive reviews here. As others have said, their labor costs are much higher than other qualified gun stores in town. I guess you have to pay for the bad attitude. Both times I have asked about service work, they were completely rude and unprofessional. Most of the positive reviews seem to be made by employees and friends of employees. For anything firearm related, check with one of the many other qualifies shops around.
Basic gunsmith charges are some of the highest in the Nation, no exaggeration. After my requested service, I compared pricing from California to New York and locally. I hate the feeling of being ripped off but, it will never happen again! BTW, there is no more Rod in Carolina Rod and Gun, just guns.
Carolina Rod and Gun is over all a great store ! Customer service has always been the best. Their displays of the product they sell is great. In this case you get what you pay for. This is a great store, I would recommend it highly to anyone..l find some of the reviews are very off. Comparing prices to the internet or out of state is not right. When this purchase is made and the gun breaks were is the owner going to have the unit serviced the internet ? This is why people need to rethink buying local.
Knowledgeable staff and an excellent selection of firearms and accessories. Good service and always a source for advice in relation to firearms.
Friendly Staff who is helpful and knowledgeable. They have the best selection of military surplus firearms in town, and they were the only ones who could scope mount my M1a. If you do not think that is significant it is very hard to do so it took a skilled gunsmith to do it.
I took my ar 15 into the shop to get a free float barrel installed. It was back in my hands in less than 48 hours. Excellent job guys!
Nice employees and decent selection, but rude manager. Doesnt value customers it would seem.Bought a gun from that place and brought another one in for him to check out (gunsmith required issue). Not enough to be worth good service I guess.Shame.
Very knowledgeable and helpful. They will not push nor bs a product. Good guys and good prices. They also stand behind their sales...all of this is NOT what you get in the chain box stores.
Jay was courteous and knowledgeable. Would recommend and would go back and do business with them again.
Drove down from Ohio on vacation. Wanted to buy an $800 Winchester bolt action. One of the guys said he couldnt sell it to me unless he shipped it to my dealer in Ohio. I talked to another gun store and they said they could sell me a rifle and let me take it home. SC State Law allows sales to out-of-State residents. Not sure if Carolina Rod & Gun knows whats going on here. Probably wont go back.
After 30 years of buying guns, scopes, boots, clothing, stools, turkey vests, ammo, clay pigeons, skeet throwers, slings, Tinks 69, mouth calls, slate calls, box calls, decoys, blinds, face masks and a few other things Ive forgotten this is what happened. I bought a Ruger 10/22 and had them mount a scope I brought with me. When I got back to Wadmalaw about 4:15 I wanted shoot my new rifle. No magazine. Called the store, Neal answered, Neal this Bill Longman no mag. in the rifle you sold me.Im sure its around here somewhere come back and get it. I said So you guys make a mistake and Im the one put out twice? That took place on 12/19/18. Still no mag. Ive been in the customer service for 30 yrs. and this incident by far is the biggest customer service blunder Ive ever heard of or been apart of. I ordered one from Midway USA for $19.50, free shipping on my door step in two days.
Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Good selection of equipment.
There are not enough good words to describe my dealings with them. They have sold me the 2 weapons I currently own. I look to them for my needs.
Excellent customer service. I walked in yesterday to purchase my first firearm and couldnt have been more than pleased. I was shunned away from more expensive models and was shown a new entry level Sig Sauer that was more than what I wanted for half of the price of the other models. They picked out my ammo and cleaning kit for me. James and another gentleman helped me with everything. I will forever be a customer of theirs and I couldnt have asked for a better experience!
Very knowledgeable staff, good prices. Nice selection of new and used firearms.
Worst customer service Ive experienced!
Terry is the best Gunsmith, gentleman on this side of the Mississippi ; he, Cayce and the owner, are reason enough to give them your $s !
Had exactly what I was looking for. Employees were helpful and courteous, and made my transaction quick and easy.
Prices could be better. Always helpful staff.
Prices could be better, decent selection and decent customer service.
I bought a $325 rifle from them. Great customer service with the two guys who helped me out.HOWEVER, I went in another month or so later and spoke to one of the employees about a small box with various clips of surplus 7.62x51 for sale. I asked if he could tell me what the rounds are headstamped or if I could look myself before purchasing (as some such as those stamped POF, TZ, or OFV were poorly made and can damage a rifle - if they fire at all!). He said he wasnt allowed. So he referred me to the manager. I asked the manager who brusquely said no, I could not look at them and he would not look for me. He said he sold them without allowing people to look at them. As soon as he said that, while I WAS STILL TALKING TO HIM he walked away to talk to someone else. Very rude and disrespectful. Why not let a potential buyer see what they are buying? Is there something to hide? Mustve been bad ammo and wanted it gone. Not cheap either! $8 plus tax for 10 surplus rounds! I went to Wal-mart and bought 20 factory-new 7.62 rounds for $10.I liked that place the first visit, where I never saw the manager, but now I wont be going back. Too bad, as they had a decent (if slightly overpriced) selection.
Very helpful people, and most working there are very knowledgeable
I love this shop awsome guns and awsome ppl.... allways good times everyone should shop there...... and ask for bill he rocks
One of my favorite places to go. I use Picking Up Krispy Kreme doughnuts on Saturday morning as an excuse to visit the shop. The staff is knowledgeable, curteous and will take their time with you. You have to be patient and wait your turn because the shop is usually crowded on Saturday mornings, but once its your turn they will take their time with you just like everyone else that came before you. I also love the fact that it is not a chain store. I am willing to pay a few more dollars for a box of ammo to avoid going to Walmart or any other big box store.
Wanted to drive today to this shop to buy a new Tactical scope and must say that I have never been at this shop before but when I read reviews in which customers were treated disrespectfully or are not willing to work with the customer that says a lot to me.
Dropped off handgun for shipment on 5/24. I was told that it would go out on 5/26 when the Shipping employee returns.Wrote 2 emails with the other FFLs information, my information and the recipients name. - No responsesCalled 5/31 at 1:40PM for the tracking number and found out the hand gun will ship out tomorrow June 1st.This is the last time I do business with Carolina Rod & Gun.
Friendly, knowledgeable staff
