What could there possibly be to complain about here, this is Kinokuniya—one of the few Japanese bookstores right here in northern New Jersey. The only other places I can compare it to are Kinokuniya in NYC and Little Japan right next door (which is more of a toy store kind of place).Kinokuniya has a fair collection of your staple popular mangas, but for obvious reasons you will never find a volume 1 here. They have a lot of books and magazines in Japanese also. If you like stationary, it’s definitely worth checking out. Prices are what you’d expect from a specialty store like this.

Accessible. Kind and patient staff. Clean. COVID-19 precautions in place. No bathroom, you must walk around to the front entrance of the grocery store across from the bookstore, then walk all the way back around.About 1/4 of the store is reserved for Studio Ghibli memorabilia and there is also a diverse video section. Books and manga can be found in Japanese and English. A wide variety of things to discover and enjoy.

Its your Americanized trying to stay Japanese book store experience. Most products are Japanese some are English/Japanese and somethings it doesnt matter. You mainly go in there because of an appreciation for Japanese culture. They stock cool Japanese stationary like pens pencils and journals. Get it? Japanese Culture is available here.

While most items here are pretty expensive, Id assume you wont be coming to Kinokuniya for your regular needs that you can buy from Target or Staples nearby. The store is always organized and clean, the staff is usually kind and helpful. Some broken items (like the mini music boxes) seem to be left on display for no reason, thats the only reason why I took off a star.

The NJ branch of Kinokuniya is not quite as good as the NYC branch, but we still like stopping by when visiting Mitsuwa to stock up Japanese grocery items. The whole store just feels very small, especially when the store has subleased areas for a stationary store and a video rental store within the main bookstore. The anime/toy section exists, but is also quite limited compared to most Kinokuniya. The store Little Japan next door has a much larger selection of Japanese toys. Overall, the selection at this location is quite disappointing compared to other Kinokuniya, but at least the staff is still very friendly and trained to behave like a typical Japanese bookstore staff.

Great place to find novelty items and kawaii things. However, I did visit this place at the beginning of the pandemic and there was much more in stock. I visited this past weekend, and I can imagine due to travel difficulties and shortages they have not been able to restock. I would definitely call them if you are in search of something specific! Otherwise, a great Japanese book store offering both english and japanese literature, as well as plenty of stationary, manga and much more. My favorite is their Studio Ghibli section.

A smaller version of the big Kinokuniya in NYC, filled with lovely, quirky Japanese books, stationery, toys, gadgets, socks, and all sorts of fun little things. You can do all your holiday shopping there and find something unusual for everyone on your list. I do. Not cheap, but why should it be? Its all imported from Japan.

I visited the little Japan store today to buy a model build set. It was going to be gifted. The owner was super kind and on top of that, she offered to wrap my present, to which I accepted (Oh, and also, the employee, super helpful, very polite, and respectful). The store has tons of Japanese toys and stuff. I dont go often; but when Im feeling nostalgic, its my go-to. I came here with my elderly mother and she purchased an item in the stationary section. The gentleman who assisted her impressed me with his patience, kindness, and politeness. He assisted me after. As others have said, Kinokuniya is by far the best bookstore to check out and buy JP books in the US. While this particular location is a bit smaller than its NYC sibling store, it still has a solid selection. It is also positioned next to Mitsuwa Marketplace and other stores with plenty of other JP merchandise to choose from. It is certainly worth taking a trip to this much more relaxed location when heading into NYC is too much of a chore.

My latest trip to this Kinokuniya was 1/14/2019. I have been going to it for years and it has only gotten better with time. Though it is one of the smaller locations, it is very well-organized, so it has a lot of product. They sell a lot of art books for animated movies/animated series/video games. They also have a decent selection for paper-crafts. Of course, all of the popular shounen manga are available, all set up neatly on large shelves lining the wall. And there are plenty of blind boxes for various anime titles and cat collections.I always look forward to visiting every time I come to the Mitsuwa shopping complex.

8/18/14:This bookstore is a little more than just a bookstore, in fact it is more like and entertainment store. In here there are hundreds of different books, magazines, anime and other printed items. There is a digital media section that featured animated movies and shows, as well as live action ones as well. In addition, there are a small array of office supplies. So overall it is pretty well-rounded. My experience here was great and I was greeted nicely and quite surprised with the amount of merchandise they had here. On my next visit I will have to spend a little more time browsing to see what is new.
