Great experience and the staff is awesome!!
I have heard from many folks that Gary King is the name in Expedition worthy boats from rigid floored zodiac type boats to oar framed boats that will stand up to the weather and rugged conditions that are a part of life in Alaska. It is not so with their line of pack rafts and the service with which they sell them. Jim King is different.September of 2017 my wife bought two pack rafts at the Alaska State fair from Jim who promised delivery by the spring. Months before my birthday. My birthday came and my wife surprised me with a Matanuska Pack raft IPA because the boats had not arrived yet. Jim either did not return calls or when he did gave us vague next month for sure reassurance. In August we get the call that the pack rafts had arrived and that we could come pick them up. I showed up to his place of business. He showed up 25 minutes later than the agreed upon time and took the boats out of the original shipping boxes with no expedited shipping label. I asked if it were possible for a discount since it had been almost 5 months since the boats had been scheduled to arrive. He said that he would not, he had to pay expedited shipping to get them there by August. He didnt apologize to me for the late delivery. It was then I realized hes a drop shipper and that though he may provide services for fixing these that he didnt build them so he may not be as capable at fixing them if there was an issue. But Gary King Rafts and Inflatables are recommended due their sturdy construction so I accepted his statement at face value. Maybe they will stand up and I will not have an issue.I took them on a trip on the Matanuska river and at the put in while attaching the skirt the velcro tab that covers the zipper origin ripped the skirt. Thankfully it isnt a crucial part of the boat so we continued. Later that day I was rolled by a wave and one of the D-rings that holds the thigh strap in ripped. I made it through the rest of the trip with no structural issues however the skirt leaks like a sieve and I frequently had to stop because the boat would fill with water and I would be sitting in a bathtub of cold water. My wife was not able to take her boat out at all due to the late arrival of the boats.Spring of 2019 the wife and I excited to get out in our pack rafts scheduled her for a beginners class on Willow creek and during the trip the skirt ripped and became essentially useless. She was having to stop and dump her boat out constantly. She came home crest fallen as her boat did not make her learning experience any easier. We called him and he said we could drop it off and that in a couple of months after he talked to the manufacturer and sent the boat to them and had it sent back and that we get them fixed bit we would have to pay the shipping one way. He also mentioned that dealing with him is way better than having to deal with the manufacturer which is kinda funny because if we had gone with another manufacturer we wouldnt be dealing with him in the first place. So naturally we needed to fix it because she wouldnt be packrafting for the rest of the summer if we sent it in. We used sealine tape which if you have one of these I recommend bringing several feet of because it will need it and it is basically a permanent fix but it can be reversed with a little bit of heat application. She went on another trip and the skirt failed again on the stitching that held the velcro section of the skirt on. These Boats look legit however the seat is too low, the Zipper in the tube too small, and the skirt is a bit stronger than pie dough. At this point we are looking for a different boats due to these not functioning as they should.I feel like this company was built by someone who would stand behind their product and inherited by someone who doesnt want to run it. The web site says they will fix anything that breaks but the caveat should be noted as to the turn around time. I would recommend buying another brand. They may be more expensive but they care about the product and the customers who use it.
Great place havent done much yet but they answered my questions and seemed very knowledgeable. The prices dont seem to high either.
Top of the line inflatable boats with a wonderful warranty.
