Great selection of basic electronic parts. I wish the store would offer more of a Frys Electronics selection of stuff and/or help order custom stuff. As it stands, if it wasnt part of a ~1995 amateur radio or high-end sound system, I would not bet on them carrying it. To the owners: dont get squeezed on both sides by Digikey and Frys !
Like everyone else says, this is THE place to get your electronic components. The old guys at the counter know the answer to any questions you may have. I repair guitars and amps and they always have what I need and have no problem helping me with any problems. Dont waste your time going online to wait a week to get ten resistors when you only need one, just visit these guys.
If you know the EXACT component you want and it is literally the example component in an electronics 101 text book, then this is the place for you.If you do not know the exact model number of the component you want, beware, the older gentleman behind the counter can be quite hostile. The last time I went in there looking for a Zener diode, but wasnt able to recall the name Zener. So, I told him Im looking for the one that has the symbol with a triangle and an s-shaped line on the front. He had the audacity to tell me in a condescending tone there are a lot of different types of diodes, that symbol doesnt specify what type it is. I left the store feeling like a nincompoop. When I got home and googled it and found out the symbols do in fact specify the type of diode.
ACK is a great store with great expertise. Their sales staff is patient and diligent in finding the parts you need. Nothing else like it exists in the Atlanta Area. When I think Radioshack has what I need, I often hear, Nope, we dont carry that. Have you tried ACK?
This place is great. Older style joint with hand painted signs and people that really know what theyre talking about.
Loved this place but they ate closed. Now an audio repair place.
They have a phenomenal wealth of experience and have helped me tremendously with my bizarre projects
Im admittedly not an electronics person but needed an adapter for a do it yourself project im working on. The man who helped me was overtly hostile and offended that I didnt know the exact product that I was looking for, when in fact I (as the customer) was looking for him (as the salesman) to help me determine the appropriate product. The quintessential exchange of my retail experience at ACK Radio was:Me: I apologize if I sound stupid.Salesperson: Theres a difference between stupid and not knowing. (I would never expect a salesperson, or who may in fact be one of the owners of this business sidewardly imply that I was only partially stupid).Thats just a snapshot, but the overall attitude and way in which this person dealt with me was with at a minimum resentment and animosity and bordered on abhorrence - all because I didnt know what an AC Adapter was, how many volts I needed, even though I was up front about my technological igorance. All I can say is that the way I was treated has made me feel awful all day. As my mother says, you should never make another person feel stupid.Obviously, Ill never buy from this store again.
I own a PC repair business, and for the last 15 years or so have always found Ack to be a wonderful resource for almost anything electronic or electrical. They have been in business since 1946, making them kind of an Atlanta classic. Think of it like this: What the Varsity is to fast food in Atlanta, Ack is to electronics supplies! If you work or dabble in electronics and have have not been to Ack, then you just dont know Atlanta well enough yet. Naturally, over the years, Ack has accumulated a HUGE inventory of just about every electronic part you can imagine. And if they dont have it, they can get it for you quickly! For me, the employees have always been very friendly, extremely knowlegable, and quick to help. The employee turnover is very low, so the ownership at Ack must be doing something right! As a result, most of the guys that work there have been there a long time. They may not have pretty young faces, but they are very experienced, and KNOW electronics!Over the years I have gotten to know the counter salespeople at Ack pretty well, so I can say with confidence that the fellow who gave the negative review below misunderstood the intent of the salesperson. If I did not know electronics and called myself stupid because of it, and someone said to me, Theres a difference between stupid and not knowing, I would have thought, Hes saying that he thinks I am actually a smart fellow who just has not learned about electronics yet. So I would have taken that comment as a compliment, and knowing the hearts of gold those fellows at Ack have, I am certain that is how it was intended. The next time you want an electronic part or electrical supplies TODAY, call the guys at Ack. Chances are they will have it for you, and will be able to answer any questions you have.
