Aisles are narrow. Nice selection of fresh and prepackaged fruits and vegetables. Some items (international foods) hard to locate, and the app doesnt know either (says to ask for help).

North Berkeley Safeway is one of the coldest places on the face of the planet, and prices have definitely inched up, and the elevator from the lower level parking had seen better days, but its still a nice store. There was an exquisite display of whole cooked octopus surrounded by artfully arranged lobster parts in the fish case. I would never buy any of it, but somebody went to the trouble.

Most clean and ordered Safeway I have visited, staff were amazing. Starbucks would not scan their app to credit my coffee when I wanted to pay by credit card. So no sale.

Absolutely a beautiful store checker Terrell forgot to ask me if I needed begs and I ended up with 5 ( I quest he thought I would through the food in my car), but other than that all was well and he didnt give me my monopoly tickets of 17 tickets but thats okay he was still very nice... quite nervous, store full very clean its a store one can appreciate to shop at.....

This Safeway is a Mecca of good will. In years past, I frequented here often, as A: it was close to my general location, B:there was never an issue of whatever made my heart go pitty pat not being there and C: the staff there were always very cordial and warm to me. In no way are these the only reasons I encourage all of you to visit this Safeway,just the first three to bubble through. It is always clean,from the restrooms to the entries. Parking is never a problem, and Ive never witnessed a snail paced check out feeding frenzy.(An odd descriptor, but I just know yall know it to be gospel true.) Previously saw an employee not wearing a mask while stocking shelves and many customers will take their mask off their nose as soon as they get inside.Today I saw two more employees checking out customers and stocking plastic bags with masks on their chins. Is there still a mask mandate in effect for the store??

Plenty of options. They have club-offer. If you buy 2 quantities of same item you will get 1-2$ off. I bought 2 Chobani Greek yogurt and got 2$ off. But staff is kind of unwelcoming.

The produce here is terrible. Seriously the worst. Good luck finding a decent onion or broccoli that won’t be moldy by the next day. Everything else is okay- the staff at the meat counter has always been very helpful and the bacon is really good. Pretty standard supermarket with a sub-standard produce section.

Decent sized store with a huge deli area. Maybe its the hours I shop here but its never crowded, or has long lines like some other locations I frequent around same times.

I see bad reviews about this Safeway, but I like it. And their pharmacy is the best in North Berkeley for sure. I got a flu shot there today and got a coupon for 10% off my shopping! With the sale items I bought today, I saved almost $50! Employees are always nice and willing to help, I always find what I need, and the self-checkout is working great these days. Im very grateful to have a local Safeway since its within walking distance and other local options are more expensive. Thank you North Berkeley Safeway!

This place is more expensive than most other supermarkets and they cant even afford signs on the doors that are closed to tell you which entrance is open. Even sadder, the person at the self checkout is completely uninterested in helping people move through quickly, so the lines build up unnecessarily as the machines balk at even a medium-weight canvas bag. I only go here if I need to grab a couple of things quickly - if I need a real shopping trip I avoid this place.

Its very busy but clean and very tidy-typical Safeway style.

Wing bar is half price on Fridays.Roast chicken is best ordered as an eight piece as the peppery marinade is more flavorful that way and they will even let you sub in your wings fried.

Im giving 4 stars just because you can find everything there, but still customer service is so, so. I mean the employees especially the cashiers, all that interest them is to finish the line, they dont listen to the customer.

Visited this Safeway at 1444 Shattuck Pl, Berkeley, CA 94709 today 09/17/2017 at 11:00am. The store layout feels somewhat different than other Safeways which made me feel a little uncomfortable while shopping. But what really surprised me was that at the end of aisle No.2, to the left, there is a section that has household insecticides and other chemicals and right beside that is the bread section. Insecticides are toxic substances.That part of the aisle smells like chemicals and the bread should NOT not be so close. First time I see in a supermarket such unsafe display arrangement. I recommend not to buy that bread.

Safeway at 1444 Shattuck Pl, Berkeley, CA 94709 has a Starbucks, pharmacy, bakery, deli (hot & cold plus gourmet cheese, sushi, sandwiches), meat counter, florist, liquor section as well as the regular depts like produce, meat, frozen foods, etc... Parking is underground (closes early) as well as on the same level as the store with handicap parking near the front entrance. Regarding Covid, masks are required and they usually have someone dedicated to spray down and sanitize the shopping carts after each use and additional wipes are available near the entrance if you want to sanitize yourself. In the bakery section, all baked goods are in their own clear cellophane bag or container. Make sure you download the Safeway app for weekly specials and often there are Just4U(J4U) discounts through the app plus they usually have FRI $5 specials plus your purchases accumulate toward reward pts in the APP. Heres an example of how you can leverage all the discounts. This week their 16 oz large container of organic salad (reg $5) is on sale for $4.28. But in this week there is also a $1 discount for produce and another $1 discount for organic. That reduces the price to $2.28 ($4.28 $1 produce discount $1 organic discount = $2.28). This week there is also a 10% discount if you get a flu shot and $5 off for groceries $50 or more. Sometimes you can even get a FREE item through your app. A few weeks ago Safeway launched their Signature Cafe Firecracker chicken sandwich and for one week, it was FREE. Ive even gotten a free tub of ice cream, butter, yogurt and various sodas & drinks so always search for FREE items and $1 OFF on your app. Recently Safeway started a pop up FLASH sale section and you need the app to receive notification since its not in the weekly ad and shows up in the middle of the week. Typically Safeway weekly specials begin on Wed and run thru Tue. If theyre out of inventory, some stores will issue a 30-day raincheck to preserve your sale price but some stores will tell you they suspended rainchecks during Covid. Policy seems to vary by store manager but it never hurts to ask.

I love Safeway on Shattuck. They make the most delicious bread and bakery products, the most delicious deli items like tamales and fried chicken, and they have the best produce including organic options. The meat department always has fresh Grade A meat and sometimes has crab cakes for just $1 each. The entire store is always spotlessly clean and well stocked. The management is EXTREMELY good and every employee is very cheerful and upbeat and each one always has a smile and a kind word for you. My only complaint would be the security, who is outsourced. I had an incident with another customer who had a mental health problem and became irate in the checkout line and physically threatened me. I had to leave and call the cops because when I called for security, they turned their back and walked away from the woman. This Safeway is ten stars, but they need to hire a new security company.

Although i have almost always had a positive experience here.... Today when my fiance tried to cash in his winning Ca lottery ticket scratcher they claimed they dont do that..... They advertise in MULTIPLE PLACES that theyre OFFICIAL lottery retailers and as such are contractually obligated to cash any scratcher ticket that isnt fake or already paid out.Additionally i waited for over 15minutes before any employee even noticed me. However they allowed me to cash my winning 50$ ticket without hesitation. So this is confusing.... Because my fiancees ticket was a 30$ winner yet they downright absolutely refused to cash it for him...Be aware the young woman with excellent customer service skills will cash your ticket. I have never had any male employee cash a single lottery ticket.... Ever.... At this particular Safeway.

Well here’s a fun story . It’s 2020 in the middle of a racial pandemic - Asian lady at the deli always tells me that she is busy or closed or she’s by her self and can not help me . Multiple times I’ve seen her help white peoples as soon as I leave . I will be writing a more extensive review on yelp and face book, Twitter etc . And corporate you will be hearing from me very very soon !

This safeway location is run by the most incompetent management imaginable: The items most people want are always out of stock, there are never enough cash registers open, and the produce selection is a pure disappointment. If that wasnt enough, theyre also racist and dont accept any foreign IDs for alcohol purchases. Avoid at all costs!

Covid restrictions here felt really inadequate. No limiting of the number of people in the store, workers unloading products with their noses not covered by the masks they’re wearing. Huge lines of people across the aisles where we’re supposed to also shop without people distancing or any worker trying to keep this in order & most checkouts closed so crowdedness is inevitable. Either the manager of this place was off for the day, is incompetent OR Safeway’s as a company just doesn’t care about people’s safety and wellbeing. After waiting in line for 20 minutes we ended up leaving our basket and taking off. For sure not coming back here during the pandemic.

Typical Safeway grocery store, fairly large, excellent cheese selection, self checkout lanes, and friendly staff. Unfortunately many things are selling out due to the panic buying sprees. Huge checkout lines wrapping around the store. No TP. No pasta nor sauce. No bottled water. Most other staples are barely stocked. Dont know who to be afraid of more - the people wearing masks or the people not wearing masks.

Went to this location only because it was convenient to the errands I was running. Walked in and saw a line of people....waiting for shopping carts.Employee walked by with one. I asked, Where are all shopping carts? He responded, We dont have a lot.WTAF.Youre a standard-sized grocery store....without a lot of grocery carts.Spun on my heel and walked out because Ive had enough clowns in my life this week.

Im comparing it to Safeway in SoCal, so Id say this place was amazing! Has absolutely the greatest variety of tasty items Ive ever seen at a grocery store. We only got some broccoli, but if I were hungry it would have been a different story. Also the checkout person was great when the self checkout register didnt ring up the sale price.

I found exactly what I needed

This is a typical grocery store in an upscale to mixed neighborhood. The food is all there, the prices are reasonable. There are a few gourmet selections with baked goods on sale in front, and if I have time I go somewhere else for produce. Rare are the homeless people who beg I the parking lot. Overall it is good.

Groceries are one of lifes necessities, and I come here to fulfill all my grocery needs. I love how Jeff Bezos doesnt own the place. I love the fresh produce and the selection of Halal foods. Thank you.
