They are currently only doing online orders, for shipping/delivery or pickup in the store. I came all the way up here from south Brooklyn to find that out — not a biggie, but I really wanted to see the items in person before purchasing. Other recent reviews I read here didn’t make that apparent, and I want to prevent others from making the trip here before being turned away.
Appalling customer service and they damaged my expensive paper before shipping it.Just wow! I was so excited to find someplace that offered some hard-to-find fine art papers that I use in my alternative process photography work. That excitement was short lived, tho.I wanted to order several different types of paper to do comparison testing on some of my photography processes. All the paper was some shade of white, and 22x30. Obviously, I would need to know which paper was which, so I could evaluate each papers suitability for the process. I thought surely they would label the paper automatically, but I decided to call to be sure.It took several calls to get through to anyone, but I finally talked with someone from customer service who assured me labeling the paper was no problem. She said they would likely just put a slip of paper between the sheets, and said they would never write on the paper with pencil or do anything that would damage it.Fine. I placed the order. Everything in my order was listed as in stock when I submitted it. Their website says most orders ship that day, or the next. After 3 days, my order still hadnt shipped. I specifically ordered at this time so I could be there when it arrived. We get rain almost daily in the summer, and if the package sat outside, it would be destroyed. Im not always at the delivery address, so I needed to know when the paper would arrive.I called customer service again to see why it hadnt shipped and they said one of the papers was out-of-stock and they decided to wait for it to arrive before shipping my order. The customer is the one who needs to make a call like this, not the seller. I needed the papers for a project and had arranged to be home for the delivery, presuming it shipped promptly. The rep I spoke with was unapologetic, but agreed to delete that sheet of paper from the order, which she said would likely release it for printing (order pulling) the next day. Then she told me that another reason for the delay may be the request to indicate which paper was which on the order, and suggested I remove that stipulation. (see photo) What? That was the whole condition of the order. Without knowing which was which, the paper would be useless for my purposes. Im testing the different papers for a process. Customers shouldnt have to ask which paper is which in the first place. That should be a given when shipping orders with products like this. I mean, how long does it take to jot a note on a slip of paper to place between sheets? Were talking about 6 different papers here, not 100s.The order did ship the next day, but I never received a shipping notification. I only knew it had shipped when I logged onto the site and checked my order status. The paper arrived reasonably well packaged, with minimal creasing from shipment. Instead of a document tube, they used rolled corrugated cardboard with a tube inside for stability. But when I unpacked the paper, I discovered they had put permanent stickers on each sheet to indicate which paper was which. The stickers severely damaged the papers in the corners, and ruined the deckled edges (see photo), rendering part of the paper unusable. They also failed to adjust the shipping when they removed the paper, but thats insignificant compared to the paper damage.Im utterly shocked and so disappointed. I had looked forward to a long and happy relationship with Talas as a supplier of fine art paper for my work. After this go-round, I seriously doubt I will ever do business with them again.
I was lucky to talk with Mr. Aaron, he following me for the whole order time. The best shop in the world! I cant thanks him enough for the great support and service! Ill back to you very soon!
The showroom is CLOSED. HI, PARANOIA :):):)
Do not order fine art papers from anywhere else! THANK YOU Talas for the excellent care you take in packing paper orders. I greatly appreciate it, you make my art look even better. I have ordered from all major art suppliers and every single time the paper arrives damaged. Choose TALAS! :)
Horrible customer service! Go *anywhere* but Talas.I ordered a particular leather for a bookbinding class three weeks before the class was scheduled to start. I hadnt heard anything from them after two weeks so I called and was told they hadnt shipped it and theyd do it the next day. (And it was only because I called, its not like it was in process. She looked up my order and said, Oh, I dont know why they never filled that.) So I asked them to expedite the shipping to make sure it arrived in time for my class and was told, No, theyd rather cancel the order. Its not worth it to us to pay for that. That was not the first time Id bought from them but it will definitely be the last.
Wasnt open to the public yet
They send the items incomplete and damaged and they do not refound ! How this company actually exist ?!
Great selection of Asian papers. Especially Japanese Papers are great choice to art creating purpose and conservation purpose.Worth to visit, all the time.
Exceptional customer service and quality products at a reasonable price.I needed material to make book boxes, so after searching Google for companies that sell chipboard, I found myself surfing the website of Talas. This was my first time purchasing from them, and everything I ordered arrived quicker than I expected and in perfect condition. Without a doubt, I will continue to purchase from TALAS. I highly recommend this company.
A completely amazing place! I stopped in on my way home from work for a few things and all I can say is this place is amazing. They have everything! I was treated great and wholeheartedly recommend Talas to the world!
Purchased 5 restorations oils, new to me. When I received them, I checked on their return policy and it was clear to me, that I could return, no limitations by their policy, they seem they wanted the customer happy. The pigments were dry like acrylics. When I spoke to Wendy, she said she could only write an RA for 4 of them and could not take the blue color because it had been tested. I am not sure how long these colors are left on shelves. But I was truly dissapointed. Then spoke to the supervisor Sherry James, she was not personable and was not going to have this one returned. This will be the last time I do business with this company, as they take advantage of small womens business like mine. Their paints arrived all dented in a box with small 4x8 divider. They should have sent each one in individual box. So they will not either return my shipping, because it was not a good product to buy. As they expect me to be a happy customer or so they say in their website. I was honest with them, by relating my issue about bad product and they will not let me return the one color. I am sure the previous founders did not expect these non friendly customer service would be working for them. Nor I believe the new family that had taken over knows about this problem. Truly a disgrace. Their products besides being expensive dont carry the weight of customer service. Now is four days after they received my return, I have yet to get an attachm with my credit. I had to send three emails to request them. What I have noticed in other poor reviews, they tell you to call them, and they want to fix the problem, but never provide the person to contact. As far as Im concerned if a product or products does not work that way they are supposed to work shipping should also be returned to the customer.
I dont normally write a review on a product, good or bad, though I will some of the time. I have placed two orders from Talas, the larger and more important one being near 700.00, with shipping included.thats is a lot of money for a small business (small, as in just me) of just one person. I never recieved what I ordered, and this really caused a problem for a client of mine. This was their money I had used to purchased equipment, and it was missing.Long story short, the FedEx driver came to my door and literally said he hadnt delivered it to my address. This shouldnt have been on the fault of Talas, they didnt deliver it. They shouldnt have to pay more for insurance because of the mistake of a driver. FedEx isnt willing to do anything about the situation. Talas stepped up and investigated what happened, reaching out to me and the courier. Ive spoken with the owner of Talas, and he personally is the one refunding me because of this situation.Even though he doesnt have to. Yes, I could have done a charge back, but I didnt. No, Aaron didnt have to refund me, this wasnt his fault. They sent the stuff out, FedEx made a mistake. I have had two points of contact with Talas, Aaron, the owner, and Jess. Both have been very kind and awesome to work with. I will order from them again and again. Aaroned earned himself a life long customer, Talas is my go to store for anything I can get from them
Good
Bunch of flakes working there. Placed an order, confirmed it, reconfirmed only to learn that it was never executed. Poorly organized business.
Was referred to Talas by a local bookbinder who highly recommended them for all the services I was in need of. They were able to provide me with high quality customer service as well as archival products/art supplies including fine art paper, archival adhesives, watercolor pigments and archival storage. Their staff was friendly and knowledgeable about products I now use regularly. If you are in the market for archival, bookbinding, fine art and decorative papers, or restoration supplies TALAS is the BEST in NEW YORK!!
One of the best collections of Japanese papers and bookbinding materials. Easy to browse and touch the samples with a really friendly staff.
Nope. They list this as a retail store but its really mail order. Prepare to be treated like a burden, ignored, and condescended to. Asked if they had watercolor ink and marbling supplies and was told to look it up on their website!! I am in your friggin store!! Whaat..? I was one of 3 customers there too. Was then actually called a few weeks after going there and was asked if I took all their Italian marbled sheets by mistake. Really??! Truly appalling!! I explained we (and also the other petty store manager) watched one of the salespeople slowly wrap our paper and both she and I would have noticed if he put 20 sheets of paper in the roll that I didnt order!! They hate their customers and they go that extra mile to torture them (to put it kindly). Just order what you need on Amazon, avoid the abusive drama! Felt like the twilight zone of customer experiences. These people are not nice at all.
Heritage Archival boxes are amazing, smaller sizes are much less expensive than elsewhere; once you get the hang of folding or gluing theyre easy enough to assemble. The Talas staff is very helpful and a quiet air of seriousness is happily supplemented with skill and expertise. With Talas its really one-stop archival shopping - if you live in NYC its worth a trip. Try to avoid the BQE traffic during rush hour and Wednesday around 1:00 seems a slower time in that area than others. Check the online catalogue before going. The fellow who oversees the remarkable archival board cutting rig is extremely accommodating and helpful and the computerized Swiss machinery is entertaining (and startling) to watch! Over a couple of months I have gotten an excellent supply of boxes to preserve several generations of family material and objets that I hope will help my offspring, in turn, store and manage them when they finally receive them.
Was referred to Talas by my teacher at Parsons. I was very pleased with the wide range of book cloths and the immense amount of inventory pertaining to book making.
Nondescript door, walk up some barren stairs, and open another door into their warehouse. Great selection, helpful staff.
Customer service just made it clear that it is all my fault that one box worth 30$ takes a month to arrive which it has not yet done. Freight was 20$Self serving customer service.
Thank you, Jessica!!! You were soooo helpful yesterday in working with Larru Leathers on a detail of a project! You were so professional and knowledgeable about what would work best for our needs. Thank you for getting our order wrapped up for an overnight shippment to Dallas! Wish there were more people like you. Talas and Jessica are awesome!
Great selection, decent prices, great help from the employees :)
Great service (thanks, James!) and huge inventory of anything one might need for bookbinding and similar projects
Many thanks to Jessica for the professionalism she displayed in getting me what I needed.Khris Karastathis AIA
The place does have a unique charm that it carries supplies some other book binding places dont but I had a bad experience there. I went in and told them it was my first time there and the gentleman briefly went over the layout of the store but mainly its just focused on the front. I proceded to browse through their catalog and decided to buy some book cloth. The lady asked me how much do I want, I wasnt familiar with how their selling procedure is so I asked what quantities can I get it in. She said usually yards would be the way to go. So I said okay Ill take 3 yards. The problem was, there was no prices listed in the catalog book and I admit, it was my fault for assuming they operate like my usual store (NY Central) so I thought it was about the same prices. Boy was I wrong. After she cut out the length and proceded with the check out. the price came out to $150. way over my budget. Normally the book cloth i get was $20 a yard so times 3 would just come out to about $60. This was more than twice that. I asked if I can not take it and she said Im sorry, once its cut theres no refunds. It was so frustrating because I told them this was my first time there so I would like to think they were a bit more understanding and willing to guide me through. She saw how troubled I looked and asked her manager if there was anything they can do. The manager just repeated the same thing she told me. so she came back really apologetically saying no she cant take it back. I didnt want to be there anymore so I just paid for it and left.it wouldve been a nice experience. but in the end I felt like I was dealt with a hidden fine print. The place was out of the way for me and way more expensive than most places so I dont think Im going back there again.please ask about everything before you go!
Very clean and great customer service.I got what I was looking for in no time and very affordable as well.
Customer service is excellent!
Woman picks up and hung up on me in the middle of my sentence. Horrible customer service!
Highly recommended for any amateur or professional bookbinders
Great business.
Good
The catalog is immense, I was able to find what I needed and more. It is not a common store, it is a kind of deposit with customer service, so it is convenient to go with the material chosen from the page to expedite the purchase. In the place they give you samples and access to a computer to see the prices and if it is in stock. There are 3 people attending, the youngest guy is very cordial, the girl still needs some information, and the one who seems to be in charge may be the least warm for the deal. Once the order is chosen, a file is filled and assembled at the time. It is worth the 100% visit.
