A biscuit sandwich will never be bad, but I think the chicken cheddar biscuit is a little overrated. The chicken is large and well-cooked and the quantity-cost ratio is decent, but the whole things just a bit bland/soggy. Bet it would be delicious when inebriated, though. Also visited while Orange Co.s mask mandate was still in effect, and mask usage among employees was poor. Extra star dropped for that.
Was looking for some good quality southern food and loved this place.Ordered combo #4 with sweet potatoes and the combination was delicious. The restaurant has been around for a long time and its easy to see why, its good quality, great pricing and near office and college areas.Highly recommend to try it out.
I ordered a ham and cheese omelette with french fries and a biscuit and I have to say, it was one of the most enjoyable meals of my life, if not, it was the most. Everything was cooked perfectly. The omelette was steaming nicely and tasted amazing the fries were seasoned just the right amount, and biscuit was hot and tasted incredible. There was only one slight downside, that being that refills are $0.75, but that is very easy to glance over when eating anything from this wonderful restaurant. The best part is, you can eat anything from the breakfast menu anytime during the day! I highly recommend this place for anyone in the area or if you are a student wanting to eat someplace for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
A favorite of mine from uni days to my graduation day. I brought my family in for brunch and we had the classic chicken cheese biscuit and fried chicken plate with green beans and mac and cheese. It was served timely and the food was great for fast southern. Love this place and will be back when I visit Chapel Hill.
First time eating at time out and it was amazing!! The chicken, potatoes and gravy, Mac n cheese, collards and cornbread and a large sweet tea to boot!! Yum yum. Great tasting food and portion size is unbelievable! I ate at the restaurant and the rest will be possibly 2 more meals. Highly recommend this sweet find of a restaurant!! Look up the menu and drop in like we did you won’t regret it❤️👍👍
I have never in my life been so disrespected by an OWNER of an establishment before. I placed an order online after to speaking to an employee that insured me that they would be able to make arrangements to my order before we placed it. Just because he was so incompetent and doesn’t understand how to work a card machine or add to an order he starts to insult a customer. Absolutely ridiculous and not how you’re supposed to run a business. I spent over $25 on biscuits just for the OWNER to tell me that I seem not to understand and hang up on me TWICE. I have been to this restaurant and even referred several people. I will never order from this place again and I sure will be visiting just so the owner understands that you can not be disrespectful and rude to paying customers. I will also be reporting this … Happy Friday !!Reply to owner: I absolutely do not accept or appreciate the apology considering I called back and you actually told me that yes you hung up on me and was not going to accept my additional order. Then you proceeded to tell me that you would hang up on me AGAIN. So that is absolutely not acceptable at all and I’m glad I took a record of that call to show how disrespectful and rude you were.
Contacting this business can be difficult over the phone, but they were kind and refunded my money without a problem.
Cheddar Cheese Biscuit. Signature biscuit. Huge flakey biscuit. large piece of boneless fried chicken. Cheddar Cheese coming out the sides. Mac and cheese side with drink. Nothing compares to how fresh and flavorful it was. After we ate I had a chance to talk to Ed the owner. Turns out we grew up in the same neighborhood at the same time many years ago in Chapel Hill.
The chicken was really flavorful! It had a nice crispiness and they cooked everything to perfection. We had pulled pork, mashed potatoes and gravy, Mac & Cheese, coleslaw, corn bread, biscuit, and dark meat chicken. All those I would highly recommend!! Tasty and true southern restaurant! 😍
Me and my group of friends came here after a night at the Cats Cradle in Carrboro. I ordered the usual chicken and cheese biscuit with Mac N cheese. My girl and her sister had never been here and they absolutely loved it.
Incredible customer service. Very friendly outgoing staff. I didnt order their more famous dishes, but it was still good food.
I had some issues and the owners were very prompt with their responses to my complaint and sorted me out. The fried chicken was divine! Mac and cheese and scrambled eggs also really good!
The cheddar and chicken biscuit is a must have. Biscuit was sooo soft and tasty. The chicken was well seasoned. And they have awesome lemonade. Well worth the trip from Charleston sc
Gonna expand on this review a little, because the owners were nice enough to thank me for my no-effort, drunken 5-star review.I spent a year up north in Wisconsin, and in the interim, I discovered a number of incredible restaurants from a variety of cuisines. At the end of that year, I came back to the south here in Chapel Hill, and do you know what I said after eating here?I had no idea Id miss southern cooking this much.Because for real, this place may not be high-brow (whatever that means), but if you want to have some genuine southern cooking that will end your life and leave you smiling while it does it, this is the place.
Beloved local joint, but it must be one of those drunken undergrad things, like Penn States Canyon Pizza. Nice folks, plenty clean, small menu. I dont see the need to revisit. Its a simple recipe: food hangs out under heat lamps. You eat food. Eat it fast bc its not gonna be palatable when it cools down.Biscuit was somehow dry and greasy; chicken underwhelming, mac and cheese was fine.
30 years since the last visit. New location for Time Out but same amazing food. Chicken Cheddar biscuit is just incredible. (Pro tip... Consider adding honey... Takes it yet to another level). This customer is blessed with age and wisdom and while visiting under new circumstances (daylight, no adult beverages on board) Eddie Williams hospitality and to notch food has never been appreciated more. Kudos Time Out!
Ok food--fried chicken and biscuits are meh overall. fries are to die for and made on the spot
Been wanting to come here for years and finally made it today! Chicken Cheddar Biscuit and Mac and Chz was A+ and service was as well. Owner was extremely friendly and made us feel right at home. Definitely a must if you are in Chapel Hill.
Some of the best home cooking in chapel hill and the sanitation grade is 100 you have to try their candied yams fried chicken and the cornbread
Went in at 12:45am and ordered a meat and egg platter which comes with a side and biscuit, and I also ordered a ham biscuit. 1, I was charged $6 for the biscuit which didnt even say ham it said steak egg and cheese and shouldve only been $3 and some change. and I also didnt get my side nor the biscuit with the meat and egg platter. I dont think the short haired foreign lady with no mask understands English well as I clearly stated 4 times what I wanted because I understand sometimes foreign people can be hard to stand and vice versa. But I really dont think she knows what goes with a meat and egg platter. The biscuit was ham egg and cheese which my girlfriend wont eat. I gave 2 stars because the food looked good, but it all wasnt there and isnt what was ordered. This review is as true and as clear as I can make it. Being a general manager of a restaurant on Franklin Street, I am giving this review as advice to the owners which is to work on training 3rd shift for sure.
Come here all the time with little to no complaint. Between 2-3am I made a purchase and put the change $3 on the counter with my food and went to the bathroom. When I came back my money was gone, but the food was still there. I wasn’t thinking (obviously) when I left the money on the counter and I didn’t realize what I had done until after I was gone. I came back and asked thinking maybe someone mistook it for a tip or something. No one seen or knew anything. Just disappointed! No one likes “losing” money. I will update or delete this review if I “find” the $3, but I don’t think I will.
Have a lot of fond (and some not so fond) memories of this place. The new location is much nicer than the old one. Bar far the best place to grab a quick bite to eat after partying. Food is good and is a staple in Chapel Hill. I may be a bit biased but if you are visiting Chapel Hill for the first time you have to stop by. I would definitely recommend
The owner of this establishment was very disrespectful. While trying to resolve a previous issue that was promised to be fixed upon ordering . The manager HUNG UP the phone stating that we do not understand. As we called back immediately after stating how it was disrespectful for the owner to hang the phone up on a paying customer. He continues to say THATS RIGHT, IM GOING TO HANG UP ON YOU AGAIN... Will never receive any of my business EVER again, I will alert all friends in the area and file with the BBB. As an owner you should know how to be professional about a situation.I request that the OWNER of TIME OUT in Chapel Hill NC,DOES NOT RESPOND TO MY COMMENT WITH A FAKE APOLOGY. I am disgusted. We would like a refund as well, the food we received was not prepared fully. We will be in touch VERY VERY soon!
My wife saw this restaurant on WRALs Tarheel Traveler. My family and I ordered various items from the menu such as fried chicken, bbq chicken, succotash, collard greens, macaroni and cheese and yams. The food tasted great as it was well.seasoned. The staff was very friendly as well and the seating area was clean. We cant wait to return and try other items on the menu.
Amazing service everyone was so nice and the food was delicious. My family and I got a wide variety of food and everything we tasted was incredible.
Very friendly service. The food was typical cafeteria style. The flavors werent that great. I ordered breakfast with pancakes, bacon, and eggs.
The food was very good. And the service was Great 👍
Carolina classic! Great service, not sure why this is the first time Ive been here but I will CERTAINLY be going back.
The worst for delivery and they always forget an item. Like, why be open 24 hours just to provide mediocre food and service? People are paying money for a meal and expect it to be up to par. Soggy fried chicken and bland macaroni are not what people want when they order food from you.My sister normally orders and you guys always mess her order up, so she had me order and it’s the same thing. Guess this place is the best this lil town could do if this is a staple. Hire employees who care about how the food is prepared even when the owners aren’t there to keep watch.I agree with some of the negative reviews. Don’t pat yourself on the back for the things you should be doing any way as a restaurant; focus on the negative reviews and improve.Seems like those of us who are used to quality food are done with this place unfortunately. Glad DD refunded my order in full.
Slow but worth the wait
The food was hot, delicious and ready pronto. The establishment was clean and well organizes. Food displayed was mouth-watering. The staff was nice and courteous. They made sure I had everything I needed to enjoy my meal....I will be back.
Always great food. But I tried to stop by at 2 and 3 this morning but drunk students out the door
The mac and cheese and cinnamon rolls are super good and the people who work there are lovely!!
I think that all restaurants need to be considered in the context of their intentions/purpose/category. Even if you go to a fine dining restaurant, the meal you get there may not be as good as a sandwich at your local deli, despite the supposed higher quality food or the better service. I bring that up because Time-Out is one of those restaurants that has a unique category that needs to be considered...late night drunk food. When I knew I was coming to Chapel Hill, I originally wanted to come to Time-Out because I had seen it on Man vs. Food and I love a good fried chicken sandwich. However, I had heard from several UNC alums that it was not great food so I decided I wouldnt plan for it. However, after a night on Franklin Street, we found our way in line at Time-Out.You order at a counter with everything out behind a glass case like at a cafeteria. It was around 2 AM and it was being manned by just one guy. We each got a fried chicken sandwich and some mac and cheese, both of which were greasy but good. The biscuit was pretty buttery and the chicken was slightly dry but as far as drunk food goes...it got the job done. Dont expect the best chicken biscuit sandwich youve ever had.Its also a great place for drunk people watching as people file in here from the bars.Probably wont be back but hey, glad I had this Chapel Hill experience.
Ordered through doordash I was missing two sides and a drink. The food I did actually receive was all mushed together and cold and dry.
A chicken probably has the best macaroni and cheese and collars Ive ever had in my life. I also got to watch some dude puke in the trash can while his pants were around his ankles. A1 experience
Love this place the food is very good friendly service no long wait. I ate there 13 years ago didnt know it was still open went there last week food was still great will go back.
Late night visit, food great and customer service top notch. Served fast and hot. Mask requirements and social distancing in play. Enjoyed my meal. We will be back .
I have never been talked to so nasty by someone. Yelling at me that I didnt pay for my food even thought I showed my receipt and email and bank statement. In front of a crowd like I was trying to steal someones food. Then after should found that it was her mistake she was still rude and made excuses for why she was rude while a restaurant full of people stood and watch. And after a hour of going back and forth my food still wasnt even ready. I contacted customer service and walked back in the store while she answered the phone and while standing front of me she lied to the lady on the phone telling her that she was short staffed and told us that she didn’t have any more chicken which was one of the items I ordered. After she got off the phone she canceled my order without asking me what I would like to do about my food that after a hour now was still not ready. I had it out with her in the store because your nasty and all that was uncalled for. My thing is the cook told me the chicken was ready and she told me all I was waiting on after 45 mins that my eggs bacon and pancakes needed to be cooked. Ok so why another 30 mins later you never attempted to cook my food. Chit chatting with staff let one off the clock I see one clock in and you have 2 in the back. So your not short staffed and everyone is talking so you would think my food is ready nope nothing. So after a hour and twenty mins no food and got a refund. And I was asked to leave because I did call her a B. Still full of excuses why I didn’t have any food to show for the hella long wait! So I guess I’ll never know what the food tastes like cuz I can’t go back. Sad!
Havent eaten here since Graduating from NC State in 1985....Hasnt changed much.....is still the BEST place to get a Chicken Biscuit.
Impeccable food and amazing service. Everyone was so nice and the food was delicious.
Just 1 side item for the price of a meal is disappointing, I have been to way better restaurants and they all give you 2 sides. The food was just ok, nothing special.
A UNC tradition. Open 24/7. Enough said.
DELICIOUS food, large portions, friendly service and great prices!! Great place to eat.
Best to only eat here after some drinking or as a late night outing. The food seems to taste better the later it gets
Love coming back to Time-Out whenever I come back through Chapel Hill. A long time staple of Chapel Hill, they are open 24 hours and have the best biscuits and I highly recommend the chicken and cheddar biscuit. As much as Chapel Hill has grown and changed over the past 20 years, Time-Out has remained on Franklin Street and continues to offer great food with a great staff.
Great chicken and cheddar biscuits. Open 24 hrs Im grateful
Great place for late night food. Grab a drink and walk on over. Its always worth it
Chedder chicken biscuit and mac and cheese is awesome!!!
Great food, service is so slow its insane. Was standing here for 45 minutes at non-peak times.
Great ambience. Friendly people. The chicken egg biscuit was huge
I had fried chicken combo there so didnt get to try BBQ, chicken was tender and flavorful, my side order was green beans and it was average. Though my meal hit the spot perfectly.Over all decently priced BBQ/fried chicken place, perfect for both snack and or actual meal. Everything you would expect in a student joint, best part is it opens 24/7, would def eat there again......man I might have made a mistake ordered corn bread instead of their signature biscuit reading other reviews, and Im sad now D:
If you are craving food after 10pm when most restaurants are closed, this is the place to go. Had their pulled pork dinner (collard greens & coleslaws) fried chicken which was extremely juicy and tender, and despite being a 24/7 restaurant, everything tasted and looked fresh. I also really liked how all their food had balanced flavor (not too salty).
1st time trying this restaurant tonight, absolutely incredible!! The flavor is amazing, I got fried chicken with mac n cheese/ green beans, a fried steak biscuit and a slice of sweet potato pie.. I am addicted already will def be a regular here!!! 100 thumbs up (:
Very helpful staff.. the employees were friendly and fast.. I love the head lady!
Biggest and best chicken biscuit in the game. The biscuit is square, and the chicken is perfect.
Quick service and great food!
The chickenncheddar biscuits were simply amazing and enormous.
Great place to eat, friendly workers and food is out of this world good. We really enjoyed it. Street parking $1.75/ per hour
Good food good prices always open.
The food there is amazing but Ive been going there along time ago I love there food
Great Late nite spot always Open good food fast friendly
Chicken egg cheese late night delight 😋!
The best cornbread on the planet! But they should give up on bbq or put some black cooks in there and not no-flavor hispanics.
Love the chicken and dumplings.. Love the shredded chicken as well
When you go to Time-Out you may not get why its special... but when you oder your food from them and finally taste it! Youll get it, home cooking, thanks giving, big mamas house food.. and they are open 24 hrs 7 days a week.. so its one of those restaurants that makes since one you taste the food .. it aint fancy because it doesnt need to be..
We came there to pick up a Christmas dinner. We orders a 15 piece, Mac n Cheese, mashed ppotatoes. The fried chicken was awful. Tasted like it was just soaking in grease. Thats all we tasted was the grease. I take it they were busy because here were a lot of customers when I came in. The noodles in the mac and cheese were over cooked. Very dissappointed I wasted $60.*Edit*Staff/cook replaced our food on 12/30/20. Food was much better! The yams were delicious! The staff/cook even bought the food to the car. I love a business that aims to please their customers. I will be back!
I’ve been here in NC since the pandemic hit, (native NY’er by way of the Caribbean) spending time with my mom and ordering in while working remotely. Time Out’s food gave me nostalgia for home as the food was delicious and I ordered after 1 AM.Most spots at home are open this late so I truly appreciated that. My one peeve was my collard greens which were missing in action in my last order. I was devastated, real talk. All jokes aside, the food truly is tasty and I will definitely make sure I order or pick up food at least a dozen more times before I head back to Brooklyn. Keep up the good work and God bless your business!P.S. I won’t be mad if you guys add jerk chicken to your menu, ijs 😉
This place is the type of place that never goes away. The people there are loyal, hard working, down to earth people. This place was incredible. If i lived closer id eat a cheddar biscuit every single day.
If you like bone-in chicken biscuit sandwiches and being charged for ice water from people you cant understand, this is your place.
This was my first time being here in 20 years and the food was just as good as I remembered. This was one of my favorites when I was younger and Im glad theyre still around!
Took some out of town friends for breakfast.. they loved it.. My go to place
One of the absolute best places to grab a quick bite on Franklin St. It is also a staple of the UNC Chapel Hill campus, and has been in business for many years.
Before today it was nearly 12 years since I was here, and is heartening to see it is still just like it was then. The atmosphere oozes with Tarheel pride, and all the photos of past greats are fun to see. Eddie, the owner was even working the ordering line.I had the chicken egg and cheddar biscuit. The biscuit was made fresh that morning, the chicken was cut off the breast to order and it was juicy meat with crispy skin (just as the southern gods intended). The eggs were perfect and the cheese was a melted gooey delight. Anyone who has spent time in Chapel Hill has probably been here, but if you are visiting for the first time you cant have a real UNC experience without eating here at least once.
The food was southern home cooking good and the prices are very reasonable.
A chapel hill staple, plain and simple
Great food. Great people.
This place is home when I come to Chapel hill. This is the hidden gem that all the greats from Michael Jordan to Dean Smith go to 24/7 breakfast and lunch. Must go to when in the area!
Great take out- pleasantly surprised - no wonder you’ve been around for so long- can’t believe we just found you - will be back soon
Ordered on Uber eats and waited 2 hours. Chicken was solid but sides were salty af.
Extra large portions of food, fast and friendly service with good prices
