5 stars all day long. The best part about this shop is the staff. Doug is the man! He has the ability to make you feel like you are a regular even though its your first time stepping foot in the store. He will guide you in any questions and make very precise recommendations. All I have to say is WOW - such incredible service and warm welcome from Douglas. From the second I stepped in, he took me under his wing to guide me in my selection of a few cigars to take back to Cleveland for my brother and I to enjoy. He asked a few questions to narrow down the selection and from there, within my price range. This shop has everything you could ask for and the cigar lounge is very private and enticing. Ill absolutely be back and I am excited to try the cigars with my brother. Shout-out to Douglas, he truly made this my go-to shop from now on.

Nice place with a great selection of cigars and accessories. Not liking the $15 daily fee, but then again back home in Michigan Im just not used to that. I like being able to bring my own drink, but since Im not a member Id have to bring something Ill finish because I have no storage space.Ill be sure to visit again now that Im more prepared. The daily fee you pay as a non-member regardless if you buy a cigar or accessory or not. They do provide glasses with or without rocks. I heard someone say they sell bottled water but I didnt see any. A member knew I was outta town and shared his coke zero with me.

An absolutely phenomenal experience! Doug, Ethan and Harold were all exceptionally helpful and didnt try to upsell us or even push a sale. Wow. Thats all I can say. I got into pipes 5 days ago and found out I was lucky enough to live near Iwan Ries. I stopped by today with my fiance and it was an amazing experience! The two gentlemen I had the pleasure of working with were able to answer all my dumb questions and were also incredibly kind and courteous to my fiance, who has zero interest in pipes. I ended up with three beautiful new pipes and some tobacco. It was a fantastic experience and I cant wait to come back!

My favorite place to go when I smoked a pipe. That was over 50 years ago in 1967. It would be nice to see the place again someday. Used to love the aroma when first entering the shop. I quit smoking everything over 30 years ago in 1987, so Im still alive to remember this.

Super chill, laid back vibes. There are a few rooms here and they do host private events. I believe there is a membership fee if you live in the area but this has such an exclusive feel once inside. The building is super historic but renovated to be chic while keeping the rich past present. The ceiling is beautiful and they have some really old school phone booths that you can check out. Filled with plus leather couches and a bunch of different seats. This place is BYOB though they do supply ice and cups. In Chicago you can buy liquor from Walgreens so pick some up before going there. We bought a bottle of Jack Daniels Honey which went so super smooth with our cigars. I believe you pay an entry fee and buy your own cigars ( they have plenty ). This is a great place to take a load off. The owner or host was really knowledgeable about the history of the building and made us feel super welcomed. I will def be back.

I cannot say enough about this store, if you dont want to read this long post, just go and you wont regret it! All aspects of this establishment are five star, from the lounge (both the free and the member) to the employees, the the vast store itself! first off in entering the store you are immediately greeted by the staff. the staff I encountered were so friendly and knowledgeable. Douglas was the first gentleman that I met and he knew all the right questions to find me a great cigar. I wanted something unique and he definitely met the order with thier house cigar as well as the exclusive TAA cigar. Both were amazing BTW. then I talked with Mark for a while, again, so knowledgeable and friendly. I was only there for 2 hours but was already feeling like a regular. Then there was Harry, he has been in the field for a long time and really knew his stuff. I had such a great experience there and will definitely return! it is nice to find honest people in the industry. this place from the outside doesnt seem much, but when you walk in it is amazing! A must for all cigar and pipe lovers!

Wonderful experience and great customer service! What can I say, first off I came to Chicago to visit a friend who ultimately ended up taking me here. Upon arrival we were greeted by Doug, who knows my friend Sam and has become friends with him over time. Doug is someone who not only knows what he talks about when it comes to pipes and tobacco, but also someone who is well rounded and is willing to take the time to sit there and help you. I came in with the intentions of possibly purchasing a Savinelli (as all my briars are Petersons and got to have one to balance things out), and Doug sat there for 2 hours to help fit the right pipe for me. Honestly I was the true example of a picky customer wanting the right bowl shape, finish, stem shape, and color. Even though I was picky Doug sat there with Sam and I and assisted in making recommendations and finding the correct pipe for my style. Sure enough Doug was able to pick the perfect pipe that would fulfill my needs for a Savinelli and that also gave me a memento of the wonderful trip I had visiting my friend as well as make a new friend at Iwan Ries. I went home with a Iwan Ries 160th Anniversary pipe that is a limited edition made by Savinelli for Iwan Ries and only 160 were made. Granted I snagged the 105th one so there is still 55 left until they are completely gone. Obviously I was anxious to try it so Sam and I went off to their smoking lounge that is huge, beautiful and looks like something that you would see rich people sitting in. Their wonderful dark wood panels and leather seats honestly made us feel high class. The pipe that I got....... Priceless. Honestly I didnt really want to smoke it because of how beautiful it was, to include the sterling silver Iwan Ries plate that displays their 160th anniversary on it and their IRC (Iwan Ries) custom stem. I ended up packing it with a tobacco that Doug recommended to me as after I picked my pipe. He also wanted to learn what tobaccos pleased my palate and was able to point me to some that were up my alley. To sum things up, a wonderful smoke, a wonderful pipe, and a wonderful experience. Doug also came in and checked on us as well and had a wonderful conversation with us, from new things in the pipe/tobacco industry, Sams opera career and things going on in our lives. So if you go to check this place out ask for Doug, the myth, the man, the legend. Highly recommend this place and will make it my first place to stop at when I come back and visit!

Best tobacco game in town. Everyone who works here is a genuine, down-to-earth person who never talk down to anyone. New to cigars/pipes? They’ll sit with you for a solid hour teaching you all the ins and outs. Veteran to cigars/pipes? They’ll help broaden your nicotine based horizons with new flavors, aromatics, styles and more!Aside from the shop, their smoking lounge is excellent and is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The only noise comes from the L tracks outside the historical Louis Sullivan windows as they clatter along Wabash Ave. Plenty of comfy leather armchairs for you and your friends to smoke in and a BYOB policy to liven things up even more. There is a $15 daily cover charge for each person who uses the lounge, but it’s well worth it (and cheaper than other places) to smoke in the heart of downtown Chicago. I also highly recommend the yearly membership, at least to have a nice bathroom to use when you’re downtown (a rarity in the loop).This place really feels like a second home to me and I cannot recommend it enough!

Iwan Ries is a pipe smokers dream. They have countless pipes in of all types in all price ranges, and I have never seen a greater selection of tobacco and accessories in my life. Plan to spend a while there if you are visiting from afar.

Wanted to get about 10 cigars for a bachelor party and I have no knowledge about cigars. I came in because they have a great reputation and reviews online. Did not disappoint! I was in and out within 20 minutes, within budget, and great service. I worked with Mark who was very helpful and knew just what would work for my group.

Mark is an amazing asset to both customers and Iwan Ries. He made my husbands 30th birthday an unforgettable experience. Mark helped us (first time cigar novices) pick out cigars that paired beautifully with the whiskey we brought. He then spent at least 20 minutes helping us get settled into the lounge and showing us the proper way to enjoy the cigars. He checked on us throughout our stay, and was such a gracious host. Great selection and relaxed atmosphere.

I was in yesterday to buy myself a treat after achieving a personal goal. Nothing makes for a celebration like a celebratory trip to Iwan Ries & Co. Im a huge fan, but since I live in the suburbs I only make it down to the store once or twice a year. Youll not find a more inclusive, knowledgable staff anywhere in the city, state, or for all I know the country. Truly top-notch customer service with a range of products that just cant be beaten.

While at Chicago for Star Wars celebration this month, I stopped by Iwan Ries & Co. What a great shop! Being from NJ and a fairly new pipe smoker, tobacco pipe shops are a rarity. Given the chance, I would certainly stop in again. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Not to mention the patrons who frequent the shop. Overall, I had a very pleasant experience and cannot wait to visit again. Keep up the good work, gentlemen!

Great place and amazing service

Excellent, low key lounge to enjoy a cigar. It’s casual and very low key with men and women who enjoy a good smoke. The ventilation is decent but be prepared to be consumed by smoke in a club room atmosphere. The manager and staff do a great job of emptying ash trays and keeping the place tidy. Bring your own drinks.

Outstanding pipe shop. Great selection of cigars too. The inventory is awesome but the people who work there are even better. Charles, the owner I think, is very nice. Harry provides good support. Doug, however, is the star of the show. Very kind. Very knowledgeable. He took the time to understand my pipe preferences and tobacco preferences. He then made recommendations. They were spot on. I lean heavily toward English blends and strong flake tobacco. They have plenty to choose from. I didnt plan on buying much but couldnt resist-even in spite of the ridiculous taxes. Bought a few pipes too. Nice choice of quality pipes in all price ranges. Was definitely steered right by Doug. While I was shopping Doug even took my pipes to the buffing wheel for a courtesy polishing they look great and wish I had brought a few more pipes with me If you are a serious pipe person you should go to this very fine, very old and very established shop. If youre in Chicago, its a must. Worth making the trip to Chicago for this alone. Its a stand out shop and Doug made it a truly great experience. Iwan Ries has everything you need between the tobacco shop and smoking lounge. I utilize the poker room monthly and consider it one of my favorite places in Chicago. Shout out to Mark for making every trip here top notch.

I went here for my birthday on August 4th (Tuesday) me and my lady was the only ones there except for a couple of people in the members only part of the lounge. When we sat in the lounge the guy that worked there came into the lounge walked to the projector screen and never turned on the tv. After being there for about 30min I figured out on how to turn on the projector to watch the basketball games. When I turned on the the tv I turned the volume up enough to hear the tv, the tv didn’t have a surround sound or any bass at all, and it wasn’t loud at all, the members only lounge is sectioned off and the door was closed. While watching a game the guy who worked there (the one with glasses) came into the lounge area turned downed the volume to the tv walked out and sat in the lounge area in the room next door and had loud conversation with the other guy that worked there. I felt like they didn’t want us there. I will never return

Ive been here a few times but finally writing a review. The staff is always friendly always asking you if you need help. Thats the winner for me customer service is always top priority with me. The selection of cigars are is quite out standing and all the cigars that Ive picked out where fresh. Havent taken the time to enjoy the lounge yet. Due to my schedule but hopefully that changes soon.

AMAZING shop. History all around you while you are there!! From the building to the family heritage everything had story. 12,000 pipes in stock is truly unimaginable. That could not be done today in a modern shop. They have a true passion for smoking fine tobacco and artistry of the beautiful pipes.The staff was fantastic too. If you want an true education on pipes Douglas is your guy. He was great. He was patient and happily showed me over 20 pipes and helped me narrow it down to 2. (I bought both) He has a passion for all Italian pipes but knows about them all. Definitely ask for Douglas when you get there. He also has great knowledge and background in tobacco and some great worldly experience to back it up. It was a true pleasure to visit and speak with him.The lounge was so classy. Great old time Chicago feel. The atmosphere was great. The view of trains going by, the leather chairs and the dark mahogany walls sealed the whole experience.Dont miss a chance buy a new pipe or cigar and have a smoke at the oldest tobacco shop in the nation. Plan on making it a multi hour visit. I know I will on my next visit to Chicago.

A Chicago institution for lovers of tobacco. I can easily spend an hour just browsing the store before deciding on a purchase. The gentlemen here are attentive and extremely knowledgable.

I love this place. The most comprehensive selection of tobacco, in house, anywhere. Prices the same or better than anywhere else Ive been. My tobacco orders always come quickly and even factoring in the shipping charges, they are more than competitive. Dont just order from them though. Its definitely worth your time to visit the store for the huge selection of pipes and tobaccos and the knowledgeable and friendly staff.

Still one of the best spots around anywhere, yet alone in the city. Needed something that inst an everyday cigar, and they delivered with some 2017 TAA Angels Anvil from crowned heads and and Anejo that wasnt price gouged to kingdom come. Always enjoy heading in there to see what they got on the shelves.

An excellent shop with prompt mail order service. They have an in house cigar brand that is a resurrection of a defunct Chicago tobacco label, and the cigars under that label are an excellent smoke. Their cigars are in pitch perfect condition, indicating superb humidor maintenance. They also have a marvelous selection of pipe products.

One of my favorite places in Chicago. The shop has an enormous variety of quality cigars, pipes, pipe tobacco, and accessories. The staff is always welcoming and helpful, willing assist you in finding exactly what youre looking for. The low-key atmosphere of the lounge makes for the perfect place to relax and enjoy a smoke.

Quite simply the best shop for pipe tobacco and cigars Ive ever known. Staff make you feel like a VIP, and give honest and knowledgeable advice. The only thing wrong with Iwan Ries is that its 5000 miles from where I live but even then I still go there every year. First class shop.

A true Classic how I imagine Cigar lounges Were in the forties and fifties a respite sir gentleman of City of Chicago. Great customer service knowledgeable tobacconist the atmosphere absolutely cant Be beaten. From the moment you get off the elevator youre transported Back in time from the Smokey cherry wood, To the comfortable overstuffed chairs. I asked expect A gentleman with A handlebar mustache To step out of the Back Room and asked me what I would have. Will appointed and dripping old world class.

Extremely cool shop. Great atmosphere, basically everything Ive always hoped other pipe stores Ive visited would be. Family owned and operated. I was helped by both the owners son and the owner himself, both of whom are extremely kind, knowledgeable, and down to earth. The owner took a lot of time to show me different pipes, explain certain details, and just generally get to know me and my preferences. On top of how wonderful the staff is, the selection is by far the most expansive Ive seen in tinned tobacco and pipes as well. Also took a tour of the smoking lounge with the owner, definitely will be back to use that as well. Overall, this is by far the best pipe and tobacco store Ive ever visited. I will probably be making many more trips to Chicago in the future just to visit and buy from them.Update 8/18/17: Stopped in again and brought a family member who is probably tired of hearing me say how great this shop is (though now they are the one who cant stop talking about it!). Douglas was a great help and a lot of fun. All the staff are kind, helpful, and genuine people. Looking forward to another stop in the next few days to stock up before my ride home.Another update 10/9/18: Another great trip. Douglas helped me find another weapons grade pipe and quite a bit of hard to find tobacco to go with it. Brought my girlfriend along and I think this trip sold her on fully accepting my pipe collection (thanks Douglas!). Only problem is I wish I lived closer so I could stop by more often!

***MUST VISIT*** Recently took a trip to Chicago for a week. Had hundreds of suggestions from friends recommending places that I had to visit. Unfortunately, no one told me to visit this amazing stop. FORTUNATELY, I spoke to my hotel concierge and they mentioned I should stop by as it was close.Immediately after walking into the store, Douglas warmly greeted me and asked if there was anything I was looking for. I in fact was! I am a very rookie pipe smoker, and was looking to add one to my collection. Not only did he take a lot of time to educate me and help me find the right pipe, but he was friendly and made this purchase an experience I will always take with me.He treated me with respect and shared so much knowledge.Just when I thought things couldn’t be better, I was once again surprised by the lounge experience. I went across the street to CVS to get a bottle of Johnny Walker and enjoyed the great tobacco and new pipe in one of the classiest cigar lounges I have ever set foot in!During my week trip I visited 3 times and was always treated well and thoroughly enjoyed the visit!This is a must stop for tobacco rookies or experts!Thank you Douglas! I cant say enough about this place. My company opened an office downtown and I was pleased to find this place. Fantastic selection and affordable enough for an every day smoke if you like. If you go ask for Douglas, 1/2 the time I go in I just let him make a recommendation and from the dozen or so times Ive been in there he knows my pallet well enough that he has yet to disappoint! Hes a true Connoisseur and a throwback to days when men knew their craft. Marc is another gem. You cant go wrong at this place When friends come to Chicago and ask for a reco I tell them in Chicago fashion.... I got a guy, then send them in to see Douglas or Marc.

I love Iwan Ries. Cigar lounges are a dying breed in the city and Iwan Ries is one of the oldest around. While not a great room and the ambience leaves something to be desired, the place is big enough to accommodate a fair amount of people. Mostly an older, professional crowd. Pay your $20 visit fee and bring your own sticks and booze. Their lounge cigar options are limited, but if you manage to catch the store open before 5pm, the choices and prices are good.

Theyve served the smoking community forever. Excellent cigar selection. Extensive assortment of pipes and smoking accessories. Need a high end lighter or a mid-range humidor? This is the place. The smoking lounge n the front of the building is comfortable and clear. Club chairs and big screen TVs abound. The view of the elevated trains at night adds unique a Chicago ambience to a leisurely smoke. This space is available to members and visitors for a fee. Great place to have a casual byob business meeting. Bring your own and use their setup to make it a great night.

My wife and I visited for the first time yesterday, while in Chicago for Valentines Day. We had a great time! The shop and selection are fantastic! They have an amazing staff - friendly & knowledgeable, helpful but allowing you plenty of room to enjoy browsing. The lounge is perfect, exactly the atmosphere that you would hope to find! So this review is for the upstairs-the smoking section. This atmosphere was dark and dreary. So many ashes on the floor appeared as if they hadn’t swept/mopped in a while. The bathroom was nice though. My favorite cigar bar is still Blend - check it out when you have a chance.

Historic Iwan Ries, this is my favorite place to grab tobacco from knowledgeable people. The decor is really interesting inside, you walk up a flight of steps that you think would lead you to an office--only to be met with lots of sweet, sweet tobacco. They have a huge selection of cigars, and pipes so surely you can find something that wets your whistle. I really like this place, and its fun to take friends for a quick smoke and a conversation.

Told the guy behind the desk what I was looking for and what my budget was and he got me the best pipe/tobacco setup for what I was willing to spend.Now I wished I had asked more questions like breaking the pipe in, ow to properly pack it, etc. Oh well next time I guess.They have a section of house tobaccos you can try if you bring in your own pipe.I also liked how the guy wasnt pushy with the hole Well for $XX more you can get... up sale BS . He just said This other drawer is $40 and a little better quality if you want to look through it, but the pipe you have in your hand will serve you well. Was an easy going, no pressure, take your time salesman. Highly recommend and will definitely return.

Great staff expertise, selection and experience. Have been here before to smoke a cigar with a day pass to the nicer lounge. Came back to buy a very good pipe and pipe tobacco recommendation.

This place is a bit of an old-school tobacco store. You reach it through an old elevator onto the second floor of the building. Just follow your nose. As for my visit, a couple guys and I went in looking to have a cigar after a touch interview. The guy behind the counter helped us find the type of cigar we were looking for with very little knowledge of tobacco on our part. They have a lounge area, but theres a $15 fee to get in. We didnt feel like spending money on that, but they also have a corner with a few chairs and ash trays, so we decided wed light up and kick back there. Overall, I highly enjoyed the experience and would recommend it to anyone in the area looking for a great cigar.

Nice tobacco store. It supposed to be the oldest, family owned tobacco store in the us. Nice comfy leather sofas complement the rooms. It was my first time in one of these stores and enjoyed good cigars.

This is my bar for how a cigar lounge should be. I might be spoiled.The selection in the store is awesome, the staff are very knowledgeable and ready to help find a perfect match for your tastes.The lounge is clean, friendly and byob. The price for a day pass is also very reasonable.Glasses, ice, etc are all available for you to enjoy your beverages.If you arrive after the store closes, they still have a humidor in the lounge with a good selection to choose from. But you can always bring your own.

I was in town for work and the lounge was exactly what I had hoped it to be. Richard is fantastic. Laid back, ambient jazz, and conversation. Couldn’t be better.

I’m in town for a couple of days and wanted to checkout a cigar bar this is the first one I’ve been to and let me tell you they’ve set the bar way to high for any other establishment to compete the service was hands down the best customer service I’ve ever experienced if you like cigars or pipes this is the only choice. I will make it a point to come again probably every time I’m in the city this is my first stop. The reviews brought me in and the service kept me here.

A wonderful and unique tobacconist in the Loop. Very engaged and friendly staff. They patiently helped me as I tried to remember which pipe tobacco I prefer. Dont forget to bring your pipe! You can sample in the store!

Great selection, great atmosphere, and great staff! This is the place I always go when Im in Chicago. The private lounge stays open late and is worth the $15 all-day entry fee. However, I prefer to sit in the free lounge where you will meet a WIDE variety of people who are always friendly. You can BYOB which is a great plus.
