First off, I’d like to say if I could give this organization 10 stars, I would. I decided to buy the Open Water certification on Groupon for Learn SCUBA Chicago (LSC) because the price was right. I have to say that the staff at LSC have all been awesome since Day 1. I was surprised to find out after signing up with LSC that this organization is a non-profit. This is particularly special because almost all their staff volunteer their time. This shows me that they have your best interest at heart and it’s not about the money. Captain Bob (as they call him), is the lead instructor for the LSC really knows his stuff. He keeps learning light hearted while still making sure you know the material required to become certified. He teaches the material while using humor which I personally enjoy. I don’t know anyone who likes the mundane monotone type teaching. The pool sessions after passing the online course work were easy to sign up for and the staff was always willing to help. The finally quarry days for check out dives were fun and not just something that had to be done to obtain the certification. We all hung out, they grill hotdogs and burgers for you and have a sense of camaraderie. I throughly enjoyed the entire experience and can’t wait to be more involved with the entire LSC team. Thank you again!

My teenage daughter and I took the discovery lesson and loved it. Our instructors were knowledgeable, friendly, and fun. We learned diving basics and by the end of the session we were practicing some skills and playing some games. All under water. I was having some difficulty and so they spent extra time on me until I got it, while others were free to learn and do more advanced things. Going to sign up for certification.

For all individuals that would like to learn how to scuba dive this is the place! I just recently took my first scuba dive lesson @ NEUI with a great instructor! Amanda was the BEST! Extremely informative in teaching you the basics knowledge. Ive always wanted to learn how to scuba dive and now am HOOK for life! But its not about me, its was all the about the instructor that was with me! Again she was amazing, was letting me know when i was doing good under water and she was hearing about my concern and also letting me know what i was doing wrong. I cant speak about any other location in reference to scuba diving instructors but i do know that Learn Scuba Chicago has such great staff members. I would highly and definitely recommend looking into Learn Scuba Chicago for your Scuba Diving classes. Cant wait for my other classes!

I had a great experience getting my PADI certification through Learn Scuba Chicago. I did all of my Pool Dives through them, and they provided me with a list of places their divers had previously done referrals for the Open Water dives in Key Largo, which was where I was traveling to do my dives, which I used to finish my certification. The instructors with Learn Scuba are all volunteers, and are very excited to introduce people to the hobby. They are patient and very clear with their instructions. I was a bit of a mess on my second dive, having a lot of trouble clearing my mask. To the point where I had to surface. One of the instructors (we had two to our group, which was pretty typical) came up with me to make sure I was okay, calmed me down (I was frustrated with myself for messing up) and talked me through what I was getting wrong. He then went back down with me, and observed me doing the skills so I wouldnt have to redo the dive. All of the other classes went smoothly, and in my experience there was a great student to teacher ratio at each dive. They also provide all necessary equipment to dive, and wet suits for a small rental fee if you tend to get cold in the pool.Signing up for classes is easy to do on their website, and the person in the shop went through my written test with me to make sure that I understood why I missed the questions I did.Overall I had a great experience and would recommend Learn Scuba Chicago to anyone who is interested in the city.

We are blessed to have this shop and this nonprofit in Chicago. The folks here are most passionate about scuba and want to use scuba to engage the youth and our community to do good. I can’t say enough good things about the folks that teach and work here. The gear sold here is almost exclusively Scuba Pro. I am recommending anyone looking to get scuba certification to do it through this shop. The youth camp they run is first rate.

Learn Scuba Chicago is a great not-for-profit that runs scuba certifications and trips out of the Chicagoland area. Chris and all the divemaster candidates are wonderful instructors and walk you through all the learnings and offerings available at the store.Trips are taken to the upper Wisconsin area, Caribbean, and even as far as Indonesia. I have received all my scuba certifications from Learn Scuba and will continue to visit here for my future certifications.

Avoid at all costs the guy that runs this place. He goes by Captain Bob and while he was diving with Rainbow Reef, who are a fantastic dive shop by the way, Captain Bob decided to cause a scene and yell at the poor woman handling the check in process. After being asked to leave for his behavior he then proceeded to leave a screed on Scubaboard lambasting Rainbow Reef and threatening to hang himself when his account of the events were pushed back on by others. His boorish behavior on Scubaboard inspired me to leave a review here. If you are looking for scuba lessons in Chicago I would avoid this Captain Bob at all costs.

I got NAUI open water certified here and I cannot day enough great things about the entire operation! All interactions from purchasing equipment to learning how to dive have exceeded my expectations. Great owner, staff, and volunteers. And the pricing for both services and equipment they sell is WAY less than I thought it would be for a smaller, local operation (equipment prices are equal to or better than the giant e-tailers ...seriously).

Great instructors and a great shop. I was tentative, but the instructors were professional, friendly, and adapted course pacing to the students comfort level. Jack was my main contact at the shop and was super helpful at all times. My pool instructors were Luke, Katie, and Sarah and I would recommend all of them without reservation. There were some minor miscommunication issues, so be very sure that you and your instructor are on the same page at the end of each session about how far you have progressed through the training and what is left to complete. Not a significant enough issue to give them anything but a top rating. These are dedicated, enthusiastic folks and a great place to begin your training.

TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. AVOID! DO NOT TRUST THE FIVE STARS!Learn Scuba over-sold beyond their capacity, couldnt fit us into any classes after we had already paid, and then Chris, the MANAGER, was extremely rude, condescending and refused to help us. I initially wrote a review on Yelp but they somehow got that taken down- (they likely pay to have bad reviews taken down). Some background: My boyfriend and I are planning the trip of a lifetime to AUS/NZ in late November and were excited for the opportunity to dive the Great Barrier Reef before its gone. We are spending much of our savings on the trip and wont likely get a chance to do it again. We went into the LSC dive shop to sign up and pay for our course. We were told to complete the at-home course materials and then, when ready, sign up for pool and quarry sessions. We were specifically told that we couldnt sign up for sessions until we finished the course materials and took the written test. We were also told that sessions go through October. Plenty of time for our November trip. Additionally, the written materials given to us expressly state that they will work with you on any scheduling needs. We finished our course materials in late August (still plenty of time) and went to sign up online for pool sessions on September 2nd, only to find that pool sessions abruptly ended on September 25 and ALL were FULL. We emailed to see if there was some way they could accommodate us, and we were told that we could keep checking back to see if people dropped out. Seeing as we needed at least 3-4 pool sessions, and there were only about 6 on the schedule, this did not seem like a viable option. I again requested if there was anything else we could do? Chris simply told me that its your responsibility to schedule dives and there was nothing he could do. When I offered to come into the shop so that we could discuss my options (i.e., can we squeeze into a couple of classes and get a referral to do our outdoor dives elsewhere?) as email was not proving a useful communication tool, I was told Nothing you say is going to change what Ive said. He also told me that we should have finished our course materials sooner, that it only takes 6-8 hours, and that We have ten year olds who are capable of that. Seeing as the course materials include about 100 ways you can die while diving, it baffles me how a professional scuba instructor could imply that you should just breeze through the information.Interestingly, I was also told that we were in the same boat as many others who had waited until the end of the season. No one ever told us that classes fill up fast or that we would need to schedule dives any sooner than we did.In fact, we were told wed be able to do dives through October. In short, they oversold beyond their capacity and then could not accommodate everyone whose money they took.

This place could not be better. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants to learn to scuba dive. The instructors are all fantastic. During my first pool dive I got so scared I immediately swam back to the surface. I told mark I got scared and he calmly brought me back down, got me to relax, and made me feel incredibly comfortable. He made sure I was okay, and my fear went away completely. If it wasnt for LSCs wonderful staff I might have though scuba diving wasnt for me. Since then I have finished my open water certification and I absolutely loved every second of it. The two dives at Haigh quarry were more of a celebration than a class. We got to eat, tell jokes, and just had a great time over all.

Preparing for Burning Man, I figured getting my PADI open water diver certification would be excellent preparation. Out on the playa one never knows when a random 40 deep area of water to dive may manifest so best be prepared right? Captain Bob also agreed in my logic and gave me special instruction regarding diving in dry death valley like desert conditions free of charge. If you cant tell, im joking as water is scarce in the desert however their service was top notch. I also bought my gear (snorkel, mask, flippers) and they filled my special request to have all pink gear. They also offered to dye the pool pink for me however I figured out of respect for other divers that dislike the color, limit my pink fetish to my own personal items. I plan on continuing my diving certifications with Learn Scuba Chicago and also have interest going on their Destination Dive Trips. Im really digging Captain Bobs RV and hear its been specially suited to submerge in waters above the surface plus a foot or two. Not quite Volkswagen Schwimwagen though.TLDR?Use Learn Scuba Chicago to get your dive certifications and Gear.
