A part of Clayton since 2015, Vincent Marsden’s “Vincent Van Doughnut” brought the idea of artisan fried Dough to a city long-content with the usual, and although locals may still gripe about pricing the product itself is high quality, clever and comparable to what one will find at similar shops on both coasts. Now with two locations, the original a cozy brick space with strong WiFi plus various types of seating, it is prior to opening the door that a smell of Yeast permeates the sinuses, some twenty-two flavors plus Holes available on this particular Saturday morning.Conducive to lingering over Coffee and conversation, the lone server efficiently serving a steady stream of guests with a smile on his face, suffice it to say that Vincent Van Doughnut is not a place for “cheaper by the dozen” discounts, yet despite a price of $24.20 for six it would be difficult to find fault in any of the rounds (or squares) tasted.Running the gamut from Raised to Cake and Glazed to Filled, it was based on personal preferences with an eye toward variety that tasting got started with Vanilla Glazed Cake, the base itself slightly crumbly but rich with Butter while the topping tasted surprising natural both here, and more so in the case of Blueberry.Moving next to yeasty squares, hand-cut “French Toast” offering its Brioche base beneath Maple, Cinnamon, Pecans and Walnuts, fans of raw Cookie Dough are likely to be impressed by the egg-less scoop atop Cheesecake Glaze, Chocolate Chips, Streusel and Dark Chocolate Ganache.Always rich but never too sweet, though a fluffy pocket filled with Dulce De Leche and coated in Cinnamon-Sugar is probably best shared, those craving Cocoa should not overlook a special “Samoa” if available, the ingredients undoubtedly better than its namesake and heft about the same as a whole box of Cookies.
Hands down the best craft donuts in St. Louis. Not only are the donuts delicious but the service is second to none. Every time I visit I get a warm, excited welcome. The folks behind the counter are always eager to answer questions and help with any decisions (theres so many great choices). Definitely try the French Toast donut!
Battle of the Doughnuts 2My second shop to visit in the same day took me to the Grove area to check out Vincent Van Doughnuts. I realize the more I hang around St. Louis, I unearth more and more treasures. In the Tower Grove area, a quaint, clean and inviting shop, Vincent Van Doughnuts, was a pleasant surprise at 6 am.As the first person through the door, Kati, a lovely, down to earth clerk/manager of the shop welcomed me in as I took in the clean, spacious area. The square shaped, yeast doughnuts behind the counter favored small works of art on display. I tried a chocolate glaze; rich and thick as well as the lemon lavender; it will cause your taste buds to soar.I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Vincent, who took the time to share the story of his start in the business, its success and a few antidotes regarding his son who enjoys helping his father in the art of running a small company.Overall: Spending time in the shop gives the feel of the neighborhood “go-to” place to take a break from the world with a few bites of delight.
Whenever Im in a new city I try to check out a doughnut shop. I knew I wanted to check out this spot after finding them on Instagram several weeks prior to my trip. I got there later in the morning before leaving town (a little after 10), but they still had a great selection to choose from. I was surprised by how heavy these were. Not heavy in a gross greasy way but actually physically heavy. So glad I stopped - these were delicious. If youre a lover of chocolate, the chocolate cake doughnut with a chocolate frosting and chocolate chips is incredible. I was also surprised by how dark and chocolatey and rich the chocolate cake doughnuts were (it was also the base of the samoa flavor). Definitely wished I lived closer to this shop but will for sure be returning next time I find myself in St. Louis.
First time to visit, I had lemon lavender the flavor was good, the dough was heavier than a transitional raised donut. They advertise made from scratch so that probably accounts for the heaviness. I would imagine pre made mixes contain dough conditioners. My husband had a vanilla cake donut, the flavor was good but a little dry. Both donuts were very large, one is equal to approximately 2-2.5 traditional donuts. I would say give it a try, see what you think.
I dont understand what the hype is all about. These donuts are just OK. I spent $20 on a half dozen. Granted, they are very large, and very dense, that still is a ridiculously high price for 6 donuts. I like the flavor ideas, however the flavors were barely noticeable. They were also really dry. Save your money and go to Schnucks, they are almost the exact same IMO. Giving two stars for the service and the fact they were edible, just not great. Glad I tried, wont be going back, and wont recommend.
These are definitely some of the better donuts I have had. My only issue is the vast amount of chocolate in almost every product. I like chocolate, but not in everything. They make a Lemon Lavender donut that is absolutely amazing, but almost always sold out. Please make more of these and maybe just 20 less chocolate centered products so I can get my fix!
They do vegan doughnuts on Saturday mornings! These were the best doughnuts that my husband and I have had in the 2 years weve been vegan. That is not a statement to be taken lightly - Visiting this morning satisfied a craving we havent been able to quench in far too long 😆🙂
Yummy doughnuts! We got there towards the latter part of the day, but even then, there were plenty options and they were delightful!
Please update the website to reflect available options. It mentions Fridays as gluten free day, but doesnt state a specific day for vegan options. I dropped by only to find out these options were Saturdays only.
They tasted good but Ive had better plus u get half dozen for $19. If they were melt in your mouth good I wouldnt care what they cost.
Okay, so for the technical point of view on these donuts...I grew up in a donut shop and I know a good donut when I taste one. You can tell when someone uses quality ingredients, fries the donuts in quality oil and whether or not theyre fresh. For example, those donuts at Caseys? Theyre not made anywhere near there, but they do frost them there, thats why theyre weirdly sticky and wet.Not these pieces of art....quality all the way, HUGE and tasty as hell. I posted pics but keep in mind, all the pics here are for real. The staff that helped us were friendly and helpful but not overly so. We were given nice background info on both the yeast and cake donuts, although sadly, some of the ones we really wanted were already gone...note to self, come before 9 am next time. :-)We paid $20 for six donuts...and you might think that this is pricey and it is...but its way worth it. The maple bacon donut was covered in delicious, crispy, salty bacon bits, the German Chocolate Cake donut was a meal in itself and the cherry cheesecake yeast donut was AMAZING!These donuts are solid, heavy and well worth the $2 or $3 you pay for each, one totally fills you up. I follow them on Instagram and when we drove up from the lake this weekend, this is the first place we hit on Saturday...we will def be back!
Oh man! Love, love, love is all I can say. Ive had maybe 3 or 4 different kinds and they all are yummy. Get there before they sell out though. When theyre gone, theyre closed.
This place is a hit! My husband and I tried out the Tower Grove location for our first experience with Vincent and both places are top notch! The only difference between the Tower Grove location and the Clayton location is that the Clayton location has a bigger selection of donuts than the Tower Grove location. Clayton carried the Chocolate Covered Cake donut, the Cheesecake Cookie Crumble, the Blueberry Cheesecake, the Cream Cheese Puff, the Samoa, the Chocolate Long John, Chocolate PB Vegan donut, French Toast Vegan donut and a Turtle Vegan flavored donut. The Tower Grove did carry a Cookies and Creme Vegan flavored donut, and had all of the other staples from their menu there aside from the ones mentioned above that only the Clayton location had! Now, they may just have had certain ones because of the day we came and that could be why there’s a difference in flavor selections! But if you’re wanting the variety, definitely check out the Clayton location as I said they have the most based off of my husband and I’s experience. I’d say if you’re a cake donut lover like me, try the blueberry glazed cake donut.. its moist, not too sweet and the perfect balance of what a cake donut should be! If you prefer yeasted donuts and also love chocolate like myself, try out the chocolate glazed donut.. it’s phenomenal. It’s a dark chocolate glaze and you’d be surprised, it is NOT bitter.. and the dough is just full of fluff! And once again, just an absolute perfect balanced flavor of sweetness!
Best donuts in St Louis hands down. Artisan styled and worthy of the price. Arrive early for the best selection. They usually sell out by 11 AM.
We are from out of state and happened across this shop. When I saw the name I just had to stop. My wife, daughter and I tried three doughnuts: the French toast, cookie dough, and the New York cream cheese with cherries. The were delicious! The guy at the counter was super helpful and I was able to pick up an awesome Vincent Van Doughnuts hat. Keep up the good work!
We love Vincent Van Donut. The donuts are so amazing and you can tell they are from scratch. I just wish they had the gluten free donuts more than just once a week. Maybe Friday and Saturday ?
Oh my! What an experience. Im a standard, classic donut lover but this place is as gourmet as it gets. The art behind each donut is immense. Highly recommend! The iced coffee was smooth and simple as well!
So many gourmet donut flavors! All of the ones Ive had so far have been delicious. They are quite popular, especially on the weekends, so the earlier you go the more flavor choices youll have. Its a perfect breakfast date spot.
Seriously best vegan donuts around. Worth getting up early and snatching them up before they are gone. Employees are always super nice too!!!
They have gluten free on certain days and vegan. My sister loves their donuts and coffee. They seem more like dessert cakes than donuts to me.
My friend was kind enough to gift me with a lemon lavender donut, as well as some donut holes. They are her favorite. I found the donuts to be incredibly tough!! They were not light & fluffy at all! The yeast was a bit overwhelming also. I appreciate the gourmet flavor combinations, but I’d rather have a well done classic donut🍩
Excellent donuts. Pricey, but worth every penny. Plus, the extras they do (like savory beignet type things, and hand pie/pop tart style things) are to die for. The sea salt caramel and chocolate donut is still my favorite. Best donut ever.
4 dozen ordered for the office event. Every single one was a hit with the team. Ordered them the day before in the afternoon, and The team at VVD had the entire order ready for us at 7AM. Found a donut for everyones taste so it highly recommended by our entire team.
Very Hyped place . I have had a lot of Donuts in the past and i would not like to have this one again.I had the maple bacon, The blue berry glazed and Chocolate with Coffee.A lot of thick dough in the donut.I believe if you would like to have good one you might wanna go early when they open.
Some of the best donuts I’ve ever had.
So sick of showing up at this business and they’re always out of product. It would be one thing if it happened every now and then, but this is ridiculous. Both their tower grove and Clayton locations run out at incredibly early hours. I used to feel bad for them, but have realized they are doing nothing to improve. We’ve gone to both locations at various times before 11a.m. They’ve been out as early at 8:30 a.m.! Now I know why Strange Donuts has better market share. They actually havecand want to sell product! This is our tenth try. No more.
If you order, or get your doughnuts fresh then yes their good. Their the big rave according to some people. I wouldnt go there for a second time.
The atmosphere gives us this place a 3 star. We didn’t try the donuts but we came in for coffee and it was not great. There were only 3 other people in when we arrived and the only guy working there seemed overwhelmed and said that it was really busy and that we’d have to wait a bit for the coffee. We were fine with that because they had a good WiFi connection. The coffee that he brought us was bad. The espresso was pretty sour and might not have even been from espresso beans. It was probably just strong coffee. Nonetheless, it didn’t taste good. Donuts might be good but don’t come here if you just want coffee.
Wife & I went on a whim & had a good experience,we got the maple 🍁 bacon doughnut 🍩 & it was really good but honestly it was big so worth the price. We probably couldve split one between the both of us but its good to go to try them once before you die.Put it on your bucket list.
AMAZING donuts. Seriously, they taste so so good. More of a dessert than a breakfast food just because its so sweet. But still, so good. We came close to closing and I appreciated that they didnt turn us away. Not from the area, but pass through STL often, I will always got out my way for these doughnuts.
The location is nice however on a Saturday morning there was a pile of swept up trash on the floor and a broken trash can. Im giving this place a 1 one because as a vegetarian I ordered (per staff recommendation) a veggie pocket. After several bits I look down to see meat. I called to discuss and all I got was Im sorry on your next visit tell us what happened and well give u a new order...really I havent eaten meat in years and thats your offer. Also I have a friend whos a vegan. She ordered a vegan donut and was sick for days because there was milk in it. Shes allergic to milk.
My parents saw this place and brought me vegan donuts! It’s so hard to find decent vegan treats that are worth the cash. These donuts are the right size for the price and they are so good! If you’re vegan and want a solid donut, I’d try out this place !
OMG!! Best gourmet donuts I have had in Years!!! Lemon lavender are my favorite followed closely by peanut butter chocolate.
Fun experience. Unique donuts 👌
Im from NY and I come in to St. Louis every year or so. A highlight of St. Louis is going to this shop. Ive gone here more often than I care to admit. I usually get an ice coffee and a doughnut. Absolutely scrumptious and the staff is very friendly and accommodating.
Awesome gourmet donut shop. Not your typical place. Great for special occasions and if you want to impress by bringing one of a kind gourmet creations to the office or party.
Best donuts ever. The people there where very friendly. Made my day, but I love food. 😍
Delicious! Wonderful flavors and incredibly friendly service. Good coffee too. What more can you ask for?
Great selection of donuts. Definitely not ordinary. They were some of the best Ive had.
Why no gluten free doughnuts on Thanksgiving? People with Celiac disease still eat on Thanksgiving.
Great big great tasting donuts just got to get there early
Huge doughnuts with average taste. Just ok, covered in toppings but baseline doughnut wasn’t all that tasty.
It would have been a perfect experience if only there hadnt been a hair (definitely not mine) on one of the donuts when I got them home for the family.
Great little doughnut shop. Some of the best looking and even better tasting doughnuts that Ive had in awhile. The service is great and they are super friendly. Coffee served there is from Sump. You wont be disappointed .
Really rich, amazing gourmet doughnuts. Theyre a bit pricey but the doughnuts are HUGE and full of flavor. I recommend the chocolate salted caramel and the maple bacon--so good, worth a try! Coffee is also really good and the employees are funny and efficient.
Best donuts Ive ever had. So tender and flavorful. Great coffee too
OMG this freaking place is the business!!! I am in LOVE! This is doughnut heaven!!! I had extra time before work today and was debating on going here or to Strange. Yeast donuts yank on my heart strings more than funky flavored cake donuts, so I drove the extra way here, and Im SO FREAKING GLAD I DID! I got cinnamon sugar and glazed doughnut holes, a maple bacon, a blueberry cake, and a cheesecake cookie crumble. Heat these bad boys up in the microwave for a little bit & they just melt in your mouth. The glazed doughnut holes are out of this WORLD warm. Not a fan of them cold, but patience is a virtue right? Its SO worth the wait from the store to your home/work place/closest microwave. The woman working the front counter this morning was super nice. Its a small store front right next to Nami Ramen. I almost missed it when I was driving down the street. For everything I got, it was $12 something. While many people have denoted this place as being expensive, the portions are GIANT. One of these doughnuts could easily satisfy 2 people. I was just feeling adventurous and decided to snag a few different kinds to try. Im thrilled with each and every one!
A good, but pricey, donut and a so-so cup of coffee. Come on...a donut is just a donut no matter how good it is. And St Louis really needs to step up its coffee game.
The only scratch-made doughnuts in the STL area. Massive doughnuts and good prices, considering how big they are. Great special treat if you can get there before they sell out!
Accidentally found this place... 10/10!! We’ll definitely be making a 30 minute drive to come back.
The best doughnuts in town in my opinion. Im a huge fan of all of them, but the maple bacon and chocolate with coffee are both excellent. Its not the cheapest place, but given how large the doughnuts are one should be plenty for most people.
They are so nice so first I was going to have donuts at Dunkin donuts so I walked in to Dunkin donuts and I was trying to decide on what to get and this worker was clapping her hands at me and she was saying that we were taking to long to her coworker. so we decided to to leave and so we were leaving and we got stuck in the snow and she was laughing at us and some of the customers were laughing at us too so about 20 minutes later we got unstuck and then we left and we drove to Vincent van doughnut and so they were just being so friendly they gave us 2 extra doughnuts.i suggest going to Vincent van doughnuts
Neat idea but the donut doesnt need to be messed with. Too rich and over the top flavors for me.
Friendly staff. Great environment. Doughnuts are on the high end side of prices, but they are fancy, very large, and tasty. Where else can you get a maple bacon doughnut?
Hip doughnut shop in Clayton. The flavors are alternative and very good. Size is quite large. Theres some seating, but not a lot. Atmosphere is clean and utilitarian.
I stopped by the grove location on way to Dr. appointment, never been to store before, heard a lot about it, anytime I try new bakery items I always usually try a common recipe like the chocolate long Jon, which is what I purchased,3 to be exact, 8 dollars and some change for 3 long jons, wow! I mean the price would of been worth a specialty donut possibly, but a basic long jon, it was quite stale tasting, I did not care for them, wife and 2 boys also tried which they agreed was not very tasty,I would not go back, I think if I wanted from scratch donuts I wiil make myself, not saying the bakery is terrible just saying my donuts was not up to par
Great place. Solid donut. Must if you enjoy a gourmet donut.
Fantastic doughnuts. Highly recommend these breakfast treats. Also, very good coffee.
Owner is very friendly and the donuts are fantastic. Great variety of flavors.
Really good doughnuts, with some interesting flavors. They are huge, which is actually the only draw back for me. A little to much dough, a little over bready for me. But even still great doughnuts!
Amazing. Best donuts in St Louis
Delicious Doughnuts, friendly staff. Doughnuts are pricey but huge. They have breakfast options as well.
Doughnuts are awesome with a lot of interesting options to come back for to try. Service was great, everyone was very friendly.
Today I went to Vincent Van Doughnut for the first time and got the chocolate turtle donut...it looked really good ans chocolatey but....when I took a bite it was the dryest dobut Ive ever had in my life... I thought maybe it was me and gave it to my wife...she took a piece and threw it away.. It was sooooooo dry..it was huge donut but just not edible.. I gave it 2 stars cause the presentation was good but it tasted terrible.. I wouldnt run back to try another but Im thinking thr glazed donits have to be better...if i try another one amd I like I would change this rating but thid was my first time going, i feel like I wasted my money.
I feel like Krispy Kreme yes is good and one doughnut may be cheaper than one here but you cant compare. Krispy Kreme doughnuts arent big they are at least half if not smaller than a Vincent van doughnut. I would say these are the same level of voodoo donuts. definitely recommend.
OH MY GOD!!! This place is fantastic. I wish I could eat every meal here!!
This place was great. Not a traditional doughnut offering. Lots of variety and about twice as large as a typical doughnut.Good for office parties because you can cut up the doughnuts.A variety of textures. From what I have sampled the ones with the creams and cheasecake are the best.I recommend going early because they sell out fast.
Mona was extremely kind and helpful in the doughnuts and the product is delicious!
Great service and fantastic gourmet doughnuts! I highly recommend any sweets lover to pay Vincent Van Doughnut a visit, you wont regret it :-)
Delicious cherry cheesecake doughnut! Will be back for more!
They make best gluten free doughnuts!
I had the lemon and lavender donut, omg sooo freaking good
Love them coffee donuts!
First I want to say that my family loves doughnuts and have been wanting to try these donuts for a while. These are the worst doughnuts I have ever had. They were extremely dry and stale especially the cake donuts....the same texture as our other doughnuts when we decide to throw them away. When I bite into a yeast doughnut I love when it just collapses as I take a bit...these stayed firm and even offered a little resistance. I am seriously wondering if I got a box of yesterdays donuts; or for that matter the day before. However they were really pretty in the box.
Im reaching a beautiful part of adulthood - a part where I really come to understand what I want out of a donut. And for me personally, this place isnt it. Which is really frustrating! Because I love all of their ideas and all of their creativity!!Here are my issues - for those of you who havent been, you can see if were on the same page and decide if its worth your time and money.Lets start with the yeast donuts. They arent as fluffy and light as I want them to be. They dont melt away to nothing-ness in my mouth the way they should. In Katie world, these donuts should be as close to friggin funnel cake as you can get - fresh out of the fryer, every so slightly crispy on the outside, and melt-away light on the inside. Now the cake donuts. Better. But still not quite for me - the cake didnt seem to have a ton of flavor on its own and was dry. So the little tiny dallop of mint cream on my huge chocolate cake donut was not enough to give flavor and moisture. Also, they make pockets or pop-tarts or whatever you want to call them. I was so excited to see that on this most recent visit they had a Biscoff filled one! But what a disappointment. It was mostly thick, flavorless pie crust that was puffed up pretty high but barely filled with some kind biscoff Spread that the baking process had almost completely dried out. Bummer. Also, Im a huge believer in cream fillings. More of those please!
Arguably the best doughnut place you wanna visit on a weekend... Once they sell out they close for the day
Gotta love a square donut made with good ingredients. Yes they are open during the construction.
This was my first experience with Vincent Van Doughnut. I took one bite and threw the rest away. The doughnut was stale and the icing was not fit for human consumption. Quite literally, the worst doughnut Ive ever eaten. Would not recommend.
Fancy donuts and it aint cheap but so good. And Sump coffee as well.
Doughnuts still just as tasty as the The Grove location, but not as friendly and inviting.
Excellent local fresh made doughnuts. Also serving Sump coffee!!!
Best doughnuts in STL
Not your everyday doughnut thankfully, but a true bite sized masterpiece. No this is not a typical chain store with more flavors than you can dream of in racks of dozens, but a small and eclectic selection of finely crafted doughnuts. These doughnuts though close to $3 each are well worth it and will make your tastebuds take notice. The flavors, texture and richness definitely put them at the top of their class. Surprise a loved one, friend or coworker with a different kind of doughnut!
Well thought out and very specialized donuts.
Best doughnuts in the STL!
Great time !! We stopped there on our way back home. A must stop in stlouis!
The donuts here were good but I cant say they were worth the price. $3 for a donut is a bit high.
