Scammers trying to take advantage of people. Their quote was $1,065. Another trustworthy company fixed my garage door for $155.The part that broke off was very clearly the sprocket.He started by saying my opener was older so would go out soon anyway. Its 11 years old, btw. Took the opener apart and showed me on the circuit board where there were black marks (very faint) and said that meant the circuit board was broken (even though the unit was working just fine and the only part that broke was the sprocket). Told me the basic openers now come with wifi and it would be $600 (LiftMaster 1/2 HP chain with remote and Wi-Fi). Although I knew he was likely just trying to get more money I agreed because having a new one with wifi did sound pretty cool. Apparently I agreed to that price too quickly because shortly after, he told me that price didnt include labor, which would be another $220. And now I needed new rollers $160 and a tune up $179 or it was all going to break again too soon. With a quick Google you can see a new basic opener cost of $300 would be on the high end.So at this point, I knew I wouldnt be using their company, and would be getting a second opinion, but asked him to give me the price to repair it and the total price to replace so I could compare. Total to repair $1,065 ($275 LiftMaster purple screw in circuit board, $150 gears and sprocket, and said it needed a tune up, which sounds like BS. The repair items listed dont even add up to the total listed on the estimate. The total to replace was $1,254. He made sure the two totals were close. The company I did go with did find something else that actually needed to be replaced that costs like $15 that this guy didnt find.Like I said, scammers. Do NOT trust.I paid the $20 service fee for having them come out and sent him on his way.Im so glad I asked my neighbor if they knew of a trustworthy company. The technician of the second company said the unit was fine and didnt need to be replaced, and wouldnt have bothered fixing it if it did.I was going to include a picture of the quote and invoice for the company I did use but dont see that option.Outside of the issue of what was needed and the price, etc. the technician was nice enough to use one of our tools the hold the garage door open even after I told him I was going to get other quotes. He never came off as pushy or rude...

Update: The spring replacement job Garage Tec quoted me $800 for has been completed by another vendor for $207.I was looking for spring replacement on an older garage door. I called and asked for a rough estimate over the phone with details of garage door size and material and was told a tech would have to visit to provide an estimate with a $20 trip fee if no work was performed. OK. The tech arrived and asked me what the issue was, and I explained I needed a spring replacement. Then I told him that we needed to enter through the garage door as I did not want to disturb tenants in the house and proceeded to lift the garage door with the techs assistance. Once the garage door was up, the tech said that you should not raise a garage door without the springs because the cable could come off and then you could not shut the door. Then he pointed out that the cable was off. He then gave me an estimate for $250/spring + $300 install for a total of $800+ tax. A pair of these springs at home depot or online parts store ranges from $60-$150 vs the $500 they wanted to charge, so I declined service and paid the trip fee. I then asked if the tech could assist with putting the cable back on so I could close the garage door. He said he could not. I then asked if was something I should be able to do, and he declined to answer based on liability concerns. I ended up getting the cable back on in about 10 minutes so I could shut the door; it would have taken a professional 2 minutes.

One of the retaining springs on my garage door broke. Called on Tue. and made an appointment for Thursday 4:30pm. The two guys were there exactly on time - even early - and fixed it within half an hour. They knew exactly what they were doing, were friendly and charged me exactly what they quoted over the phone.
