I had a great shopping experience at the Denver Folklore Center when I visited Denver recently. I was in town for business and lamenting I had not brought my mandolin with me. I went to play mandolins at the store and came away with this beauty. The Saul, Claude and Angus were very patient with me and allowed me to play through all of the mandolins on display and were very pleasant to deal with. If youre in Denver and looking for a string instrument Id highly recommend The DFC.
Contender for one of the best guitar shops Ive been to. Good selection of acoustic instruments and the staff was very friendly and knowledgable. Spent a good amount noodling on various guitars and came home with one I love. Would recommend this store to anyone looking for a high quality acoustic instrument.
Absolutely the place to go for serious/experienced musicians. Theres really no substitution in Denver. Guitars and mandolins are set up perfectly. These instruments are artisan/craft instruments from the big manufacturers. It isnt like guitar center where you come in and play whatever regardless of your familiarity with the instrument, you HAVE to be careful with these and know how to handle them.. Prices are standard for these instruments and come with lifetime support from the shop. 5 stars all around.
We went in to try to find a mandolin. The store is smallish but selection is good. Very buy something now or leave vibe. We were able to get some questions answered by their seemingly knowledgeable staff, but the way we were treated made it difficult to find an instrument that might be a good fit.
So great to have such a wonderful music shop in our Platt Park neighborhood. Selection is broad and everyone is so knowledgeable and friendly!
I cannot say enough good things about this place. The staff is super friendly. They make you feel like an old friend as soon as you enter the store. You can also tell that they really love their craft and that they really love music. I brought my instrument from this store and I only trust to go to them for any issues and repairs.
Had a great experience at the Denver Folklore Center, staff was friendly and super knowledgeable . . . . and very patient with a newbie mandolin player.
I was playing instruments hoping to buy a banjo from them, I dont know anything about banjos, and I was nervous so I was playing some guitars and nobody really ask me anything, and a guy the came up to me and told me they dont like people playing their instruments, so I left and bought a brand new banjo online deering model its cool came in perfect condition ready to play. Ive experienced this at other places but thats a funny way to sell instruments. Also I was the only person in the store and was playing lightly, and I was considering buying one of the guitars, but definitely not from them.
An older man sat in the middle of the store and made it clear to not play any instruments unless you were basically committed to purchasing. It was a stiff and uncomfortable environment. It is easy to see from many of the reviews that the business model needs an adjustment. Highly discourage coming unless you want to grovel at the feet of the owner. Also, there were no fiddles. How can they even call themselves a folklore center?
They had some interesting instruments that we wanted to try, but they made it very clear we shouldnt touch anything we werent interested in buying. Some of us shop in order to be surprised by a vintage instrument or a local luthier, but I didnt even get to look at all the banjos they had that arent available in Austin. Instead of finding out what type of mando I was looking for or parlor guitar my husband wants, they hounded our 16-yr old about what he wanted to buy and didnt want him to play anything once we said he wasnt the one shopping for something.
The people here care about your safety and care about your instruments. Just got a custom made pick guard on a worn spot on my Peavey Concert Ukulele. John took extra care to make sure that it was placed properly and matched the sound hole on the opposite side of the fretboard. Excellent job and more than reasonably priced at $35.00.
Excellent range of guitars and other stringed instruments in a friendly and knowledgeable environment. Just stepping into the store, one already knows that this is a place that loves music, knows how to play, service, and evaluate instruments, and cares about customers. Theres no doubt that if I was a professional musician, this would be a mainstay.
I went here with my guitar student who was looking to get his first premier acoustic guitar before going to college. The guy who I assume was running the place, couldn’t have made it more clear he didn’t take him seriously and didn’t want him touching the guitars.I understand it’s a pandemic and all. But we’re also vaccinated and there’s no mask policy in the store etc. you could lighten up a bit when a kid is looking to drop 1500 bucks on a really nice acoustic and actually let him try them without breathing down his neck the whole time. This guy even went as far as taking a guitar out of his hands... Totally odd. This isn’t the first time the same guy has been weirdly rude to me in this store, so I think I’m done with this place at this point. I’ll just go to Flipside down the road.
I went here for the first time on June 3rd, knowing nothing about guitars. I got my daughters guitar fixed and ready to play. I received fabulous service. Everyone there was incredible! I will return.
I brought an unusual stringed instrument in for help (a cura Saz from Turkey) and John Rumley helped me re-string, and figure out how to manage some of the quirky aspects of the instrument. Nice bunch of folks at the store. I will be back. Thanks John!!!
Great shop for those who love acoustic music. Friendly staff, great selection of instruments, peripherals, and instructional materials, and excellent shop-work - the install on my mandolin pickup was perfect. Highly recommended!
One of my favorite local acoustic stores in denver!
Recently got a new guitar that was buzzing quiet a bit. Took it to another place earlier in the day and they said they needed a few weeks to do a setup on it. Stopped into the folklore center and they found the issue and fixed it for me within minutes. Very helpful attentive staff. Will go no where else for all my future acoustic needs. Highly recommend
ZERO STARS if it was allowedI called in advance before I drove down from Loveland to make sure it was ok to try some guitars. I had a specific Martin in mind that was in their inventory and had money in hand ready to buy. Ian was very helpful and set me up to play the guitar for about 30 minutes. When I asked to look at another guitar, Ian obliged, but a surly older man emerged from the back room to scold me and tell me If I wasnt prepared to spend real money on a guitar hed rather not let me touch any. I understand covid considerations, which is why I called in advance before driving 60 MILES to make sure I could play. Mind you, there was not another customer in that building for the short time I spent.Poor Ian looked stunned, and I politely left, completely embarrassed.Youve heard of snobbery in music stores?? Well his was worse than any Guitar Center will ever dish out. I will never do business or recommend this place to any one because of one of the worst retail experiences Ive ever had.I have successfully purchased that same guitar as of last week.
Great shop with excellent selections and helpful staff.
Very knowledgeable, great local store. If you’re looking for a place to but an acoustic guitar, this is the only real option. I searched and visited about 4 stores from denver proper to County Line Road and this shop stood out from quality, selection and the time they took to help me find the perfect instrument. Thanks a ton Bill (I think..)! Also to note, they do a free string change after a few months to ensure guitar is still playing and breaking in well.
Great selection of books, instruments, and gear. Incredibly helpful sales staff. Just a feel good place
If you are an acoustic guitar player, beginner to professional, this is THE place to go! Books, hydration, strings, picks and all your needs. COLLINGS, TAYLOR and MARTIN, just to name a few. Special orders are truly special, they sit with you and listen to what you are asking for. And make sure you receive it.They have amazing guitars and mandolins available at all times. Their association with their makers and suppliers Is outstanding. Customer Service is exceptional. If you love music and guitars, please go here....
They offered a free assessment on a banjo I bought. Very helpful and nice people.
Wonderful gear and very helpful service - great place to find your next folk instrument (guitars, banjos, ukuleles, mandolin, and several more obscure ones!)
The guys in the folklore center are always very kind and knowledgeable. My husband and I go here regularly to browse or have instruments worked on. The staff remembers us and makes us feel like a part of the community. Theyre great!
Even with restrictions, the guys inside were super friendly and helpful (they even gave us some stickers for my boys guitar cases). If we lived closer (like, within the same time zone) wed probably have bought something!
Good place for acoustic instruments
What a great store. A very good selection of guitarsand the nicest people in the world there to help you. I’m so happy I found this place. Thanks guys!!
Nice helpful people. Only sell acoustic guitars.
Great customer service. Friendly and no pressure sales. Love my new Taylor guitar.
Great selections and super friendly, helpful staff. We didnt buy anything but were researching an upcoming purchase. When we are ready we are definitely buying here!
Checking out soon. Need bowed psaltery strings.
They know their stuff and have a great stock. The guitar I bought is renowned for having a poor setup out of the box. Not here though! They did a great job setting it up before I ever laid hands on it and were really knowledgeable and helpful.
Best place for ukuleles in Denver. Love this place!
Ive been very impressed with this place. Everyone who works there is friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to help, and they have a great selection of instruments. When I first went in I was a little disappointed that they dont really carry absolute beginner instruments. But once I played a few of their mandolins and heard what a decent instrument sounds like, I realized I should just save up for something Ill actually enjoy playing and skip the $50 knockoffs. I also recently had a mandolin set up by their luthier John, and he did a fantastic job.
Kind and informative service. I will definitely be back!
Fun team, great knowledge and service, I strongly recommend
What a great neighborhood store! The staff was very helpful, especially Mark! I brought in my new ukulele and Mark helped me tune it and get oriented to it. I will definitely be switching to this place for all my future needs!
Great little shop with knowledgeable staff. I was looking for a banjo and worked with their expert, Jeff, who was very helpful. I am new to the banjo and didnt feel pressured to buying anything. They actually have a good rental program where customers can try out an instrument for a small monthly fee to make sure you are really committed to the instrument before making a potentially sizable purchase. I was pleased with the service and banjo. Im looking forward to coming back at some point to look for a new guitar as well.
I havent been there in 20-30 years. It was always a good place for young hippie musicians and a counter culture gathering place. Always enjoyed going there. Ive known the main guy there since I was a teenager (50 yrs ago).
Great selection, kind people at the helm. Thank the lawd. They have boveda packs, I will be back.
Great shop! Very helpful staff!
I just bought a new Taylor acoustic from the two lovely gentleman that were working on 8-6-19. Forgot their names unfortunately. This is the place to go for your every acoustic needs! The inventory is as good as it gets and the customer service is warm, welcoming and knowledgeable. Dont go anywhere else. This is the spot in all of Denver.
Mark, Jeff & company do such a great job of evaluating potential consignment pieces with constructive suggestions for improved sales opportunities. The staff is friendly and recognizes the regular folks by name upon arrival. I was able to sell several good quality antique mandolins at good prices in very reasonable time frames by good website advertising and store displays. I highly recommend these folks whether your buying or selling!
Exciting to have a local non chain (read Guitar Center) acoustic musical instrument store in the hood. Experts in not only guitars, but dulcimers and mandolins too! Experienced in their craft, and repairs.
A small but well-appointed Shop full of beautiful acoustic instruments and accessories for acoustic instruments. The helpful staff will guide you through everything you may need to know when purchasing a high-end guitar or mandolin or ukulele. this place is not for beginners looking for inexpensive instruments however. They sell the highest quality brands like Martin, Taylor, Breedlove and Guild. They also consign instruments of a certain value as well and work to sell those for their customer base. All in all it is a wonderful place that is curated with the discerning palate in mind
Best acoustic guitar shop in Colorado easily. These guys have more experience and knkwlwdge than anyone around. From high end guitars for experienced professionals to beginners and lessons, they are amazing.
This is a Great place for musical needs, instruments(Guitars,Ukeleles, Banjos) as well as Harmonicas are just some of the instruments that you will find. They offer services such as instrument repair, and lessons as well! Variety of books included. This Music Store has been opened since 1962! Definitely one of Denvers Gems! Lots of history about this place! Swallow Hill was located right across the street! (Back In The Day! The 60s, 70s and I believe the 80s as well!)With restaurants and breweries surrounding its location it makes for a wonderful attraction to visit!Check it out!
Great store, staff very helpful, if your looking for an acoustic instrument this is the spot!
All around great shop
Awesome high quality stringed instruments. Lots of great guitars, banjos, mandolins PLUS a wide variety of folk instruments including hammer dulcimers. Friendly and knowledgeable staff coupled with numerous teachers complete the package....THE folks to go to in the Denver area when you are in need of reasonably priced high quality stringed instruments.
Fast, friendly, and knowledgable staff! Cool store!
Excellent experience. Knowledgeable staff; low pressure. Great place for high quality acoustic guitars and folk instruments. Cool selection of melodicas also!
Phenomenal selection for a shop this size. Tons of great Collings options for the boutique lover and great selections from other brands too. The banjo and mandolin selection also had great options and plenty to choose from. Acoustic amps were another great find here.
Very helpful and informative. I didnt feel like I was coming to a mop hobby shop sympathetically, but I felt like I was coming into pure boutique and excellent craft & detail. I look forward to returning for having work done on my guitar as well as the one that I just purchased from them today.
I wouldnt recommend anywhere else in the Denver-Metro area for purchasing or repairing quality stringed instruments. Its a great shop, their selection of fine acoustic instruments is excellent, and their service has never let me down. They do awesome work on my Martin guitar and Ive had banjos in the shop as well; only once was I less than satisfied with the results, and they rectified it for free! Huge appreciation and respect for the Denver Folklore Center.
Top notch
Love this guitar store. The guys running it are super helpful and friendly. There is a very good selection of high-quality acoustic instruments, particularly some nice guitars. Its just a neat place, the moment you walk in youre hit with that amazing wood smell.
They know stringed instruments... we got the low down on ukuleles this afternoon... I see one in our future... and lessons of course... who knew there were different sizes of these little dudes!
Very friendly fast service
Fantastic place, I could spend hours in the store. Great employees and service.
Been twice to look at guitars. Friendly, knowledgeable employees and owners. Very high chance that I’ll end up purchasing a guitar from them within the next couple of months. The inventory is awesome. Please check them out!
Best acoustic shop in town, great quality of instruments. Fantastic owner and employees, they are always there to help you with your needs. Always in support of local music shops that go out of their way to please the clients.
I have been so impressed with this awesome local business - I rented, and then purchased, a guitar from the Denver Folklore Center this year. They were incredibly friendly and helpful. I am a complete beginner and they supported me through the process by providing suggestions without being pushy or judgmental. Got a follow-up call from one of the owners thanking me for my business and reminding me to take advantage of the complimentary services included with my guitar purchase. Definitely one of the best customer service experiences Ive ever had, from start to finish. Ill be supporting them again in the future and encourage others to do so as well. They also carry other stringed instruments, for those who are looking for something other than a guitar.
Great selection and qualities of ukuleles. I had a pick up added to my ukulele. What a delightful selections of guitars, banjos, ukulele, dulcimer, strings, repairs, I am know I missed something. . LGBTQ friendly too. I will be back...
They Are The Very Best, Great Repair And Excellent Knowledge On Guitars And Banjos! Wonderful Service All Around.
A very nice collection of moderately priced instruments. Very knowledgeable staff. Well worth a visit if youre looking for a new mandolin, guitar, banjo or whistle.
Very friendly and helpful service. No pressure and they made me feel comfortable even though I dont know a lot about musical instruments. I recommend without hesitation.
Extremely intelligent & helpful staff
This place was awesome, the staff was extremely helpful in helping me find a guitar for my daughter and the best part was we were able to rent it so that she can make sure it is what she wants. I am absolutely impressed with this little shop. Would highly recommend to any parent looking to help their teenager or younger child find three right guitar.
Great acoustic music shop. The kind of place where the staff recognize you when you walk in the door. Great selection of instruments and a knowledgeable staff that obviously has a passion for music.
Lots of shops to choose from around here but for acoustic instruments this one is by far the best. Great selection of high end guitars (Martins, Santa Cruz, Taylor, etc.) and great lower priced guitars (guild, blue ridge). Lots of great vintage guitars come through here as well. They also have mandos, banjos, books, tuners, and yes even Elliot capos! Staff treats you with respect whether youre a seasoned musician or a total beginner. Brian, Mark, and Jeff are all around great guys and will help you out in any way they can. Glad to call this place my home music shop!
Denver Folklore is great! Awesome store with a ton of selection and a ton of spirit. So much better experience than when I tried to buy a guitar from guitar center. Really enjoyed working with them - a true benefit to the community with sing-a-long nights and all.
Great old style music store. They can fix anything. Their style and services are very personal. Cant match the big box stores for price, of course, but the atmosphere of the shop, their friendliness and knowledge, make them a great value.
The staff here are very knowledgeable and have a fantastic selection of quality guitars. They also do repairs, tuning, string replacement, ... Highly recommend!!!
It’s hard to find local shops like this anymore. Knowledgeable and welcoming.
Denver Folklore has been helping musicians with the best brands of stringed musical instruments for more than 50 years. They sell Deering banjos, Martin and Taylor guitars and a great selection of folk instruments and accessories. They have a knowledgable and helpful sales staff, and friendly service.
They know their stuff, do good repairs, and have a fine selection of quality instruments. Prices and quality tend toward the high end and although friendly, the staff are potentially intimidating to New comers and students.
This shop is great. The employees are knowledgeable and care about what they do. Thanks for supporting local music.
They helped me purchase my first ukulele and are super friendly.
The staff is friendly and welcoming and extremely patient with basic questions from a new player. Ive purchased a banjo and a guitar here and have received excellent service. This is my favorite music store and I enjoy supporting them.
This is the best place to find your new guitar.
This place is incredible for folk artists. Its a one stop shop for banjo players like me. Picks, straps, instruments, repair, cases, strings, books, you name it!
They have horrible customer service. Don’t go to this store. They were asked to replace the saddle and 2 bushings on my guitar. Their tech guy John told me that it would be about $40. I said great, test drove 3 great Gibson guitars and left with the order ticket in my pocket. The next day I brought strings in to save a little off of their charge. The day after I returned their call and found that they had ONLY changed the strings and hadn’t replace the saddle and bushing! I reminded them of the saddle and bushings. They had forgotten and said that they’d take a look at it. I called later to tell them that I would just take my guitar back and go somewhere else. However, (before I got that out) they told me that it was already done and said “no charge.” Wow, that’s nice. What a great shop assuming that they had fixed it correctly as they had promised. But, I found that the saddle was NOT correctly installed! The action on the low E side was much higher than before. As I pointed this out they yelled, “BUT IT’S NO CHARGE!” To my shock “no charge” meant that they were STILL charging me for changing stings. They were rude and acted like giving incorrect service is OK, since there was no charge. THE GUITAR PLAYS WORSE! They could have offered to fix it correctly, but must believe that no charge means that the problem magically goes away. I likened this to having your car fixed with the wrong parts. “Oops, we put the wrong parts on your car, but there’s no charge. See ya.” Customer service isn’t THAT hard. They could have offered to fix it correctly but they didn’t.
We are so fortunate to have a place like this in Denver! Claude and the rest of the team there provide kind and patient service, and know their stuff!
Some of the nicest folks Ive ever met. Very patient with questions and you dont get that vibe that youre not supposed to play instruments in the store.
Nice folks in the folklore center! Nice variety of guitars and accessories.
Had my new Taylor 320e set-up with the action set as low as possible because of nerve damage to my index finger. The work was superb and with extra light-gauge strings....no buzz. Would recommend Folklore Center to anyone needing a Taylor set-up. Thanks!
The Denver Folklore Center is a great boutique shop for stringed instruments. While the shop is small in size, you’ll find a surprisingly large selection of instruments. Expect no pressure, informative customer service from well educated staff. Definitely recommend The Denver Folklore Center if your looking to purchase or repair your stringed instruments.
Best Uke selection in the state and awesome service
Super friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Great inventory of instruments. Staff is very knowledgeable and helpful.
Forget guitar center, this place is awesome! Friendly staff and beautiful instruments at fair prices.
Really helpful staff and a great selection of instruments!
Great shop, very knowledgable staff. Also, a large collection of high quality instruments. I highly recommend this store!
Super inviting and knowledgeable staff. Great product. Thanks guys!!
Beautiful selection of acoustic instruments, mandolins, Martin guitars, etc. Plus a really friendly staff
Small, local music shop...treated me excellently
