Really enjoyed our visit to Perkins Orchard. The $20 bag was a great way to try out a lot of inventory. Some of the sweetest grapes I’ve ever tasted came from Perkins. The owner Donovan was very active. He came right up and gave us the first time visitor’s tour. The staff was very nice and helpful as well. Great place to visit, I recommend giving Perkins Orchard a visit!
We stopped on a whim and were greeted so politely and given a brief but detailed introduction by the sweetest lady. She was very informed and educated on their products. I plan to make this part of my bi-weekly grocery trip. Im positive that I could turn up the entire half gallon of apple cider and polish it off. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
First time visiting this place with my sister, we were just out and about and came across this stand. We were immediately greeted by the owner and given a mini-tour about the history behind the stand and what was offered. Everything looked fresh and organic and reasonably priced. We will definitely be back.
I have never felt more fulfilled and welcomed buying produce. the location is beautiful with the trees incorporated into the buildings, the produce is delicious, everything is reasonably priced. the mini tour was fantastic. i drive down from central virginia every week just to visit favorite places and this is on the list now. amazing. thank you, thank you.
I just visited here with my family. My two year old enjoyed walking around and looking at all the pumpkins. But the tone of the visit was kind of unpleasant because the staff was extremely intent on explaining their bag deals for only $20! and their cart deal only $100!. We endured the mandatory tour (see photo of sign) which explained the history of the business and the deals while trying not to laugh. Later when another staff member asked if we had been there before and we said no, he launched into another explanation of their deals, and all the qualifications such as that if a pumpkin falls out of your cart, you have to pay for it, because we cant sell damaged pumpkins. It felt a bit like visiting a stereotypical used car lot.
The history here alone is worth the visit but the range of produce and produce related products was outstanding. Got to meet Donovan in person as he was hard at work on the job - which is good to see in the current day and age. Most everything is locally grown and sourced and the range is phenomenal. By far the best apple butter (pecan cinnamon) my wife and I have ever had! They also had meat and eggs from local farmers which were prices fairly and it is so nice to be able to truly support local farmers and business. Will go again, regularly.
Hi dollar - but it feels good to buy local. $25 for a pumpkin when theyre 2 for $12 at Teeter is hard to justify. The staff is made up of some of the nicest, hardest working young people Ive seen in decades. Very impressed.
Wonderful fresh fruit and vegetables, canned goods. Wish they had full menu of sorbet every day.
The beef tastes the way beef used to taste before factory farming! In addition to high quality, the owner Ian is charming and will explain anything you want to know about the meat products. Have not tried the sausages or chicken yet, but I will get to those eventually.
Great variety of produce locally grown. Local honey. There is also local farms that have steaks, pork, sausages. Additionally there is seafood and a gentleman who does smoked turkey barbecue. Everyone was nice and informative 👏
Super cool and special place. You can feel the love and passion that goes into running a place like this. The selection and produce is obviously great too!
Amazing deals! I love the $20 produce bag and the free item is always great. Definitely a must for anyone nearby wanting produce. Especially during peach season! Definitely bring a car that can handle gravel- however it doesn’t stop me in my little 2 door car.
The fruit is always delicious and sweet and you cant beat the $20 bag fill-up with an extra free item. The vegetables are equally delicious. You can even purchase beef, pork and chicken. The owner and staff are pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful. We enjoy our visit every time we go. Highly recommend!!
This was our first time here and it WILL NOT be our last. A friend of mine posted her bounty of goodies on Facebook. So I told my family we were headed there the next day. We got up early because its a 30 min drive from where we are. It was worth every mile. Being a real estate agent I take customer service very seriously. We were greeted upon entering the facility and asked if we had been there before. We hadnt so the owner gave us a tour and and awesome history lesson of the orchard. This was a beautiful legacy. He had been working there since he was 10 with his grandfather and now at 26 hes still there and the owner. Talk about legacy. The grounds are well kept and the display of the food is awesome. I really like the $20 bag deal. Go visit and find out what it is. I cant wait to bring my parents here. Thank you Donovan Watson for keeping your grandfathers vision alive and well
Friendly staff, great deals! Whatever you get in bag for $20 and you get a free item! Sorbet (3B-strawberry, blueberry, raspberry) was delicious! Would definitely recommend. They even have funnel cakes! I didnt get one but nice to know
Editing this because they’ve gotten even better than expected. This fall season they offer fresh cider, large variety if apples, etc. as a NJ girl, I always went apple picking every fall and did the usual fall activities but since moving here thats not an option but this place gives me that feel that I’ve been missing this fall and I really appreciate. This place has a wide variety of fresh produce, with some pretty great deals, like that $20 bag, you can’t beat it, as well as the very generous free item. Extremely friendly and welcoming staff that make you want to come back just to even talk to them! They also give you a rundown of the history of the stand and it’s pretty cool, love a good privately, especially black owned business. Looking forward to skipping those obnoxious trips to the overpriced produce section of grocery stores and making this my new weekly adventure!
Great place. Fun. Great products. Great value!
Always friendly, and full of food...The produce is so amazing...The fruit is incredible...I love the freebies...Great Job PO...
I loved it, it was beautiful. The people was were friendly.. The fruits and vegetables were fresh and i was very pleased with my service... And we got a free watermelon😍😍😍😍
We have made this place a weekly tradition. The 20 dollar bag is a perfect way to stock up for the week. We have also visited here for Christmas Trees in the past and that was a great experience.Definitely do the 5 minute tour if its available and if you like what they have, come back. This is a great establishment and I try to encourage everyone to support it.
Love this place been going for years. Everything is fresh and in season. Quality is amazing and the price is consistent and a great deal on fruit and veggies. In the fall theres pumpkins in the winter are pine trees and they even get eggs and pork from local farmers (havent tried myself). The place has gotten more popular over the years but the business itself has not changed which I really appreciate.
Thought I was getting a great deal for the money. A peck of fresh fruits and veggies for $20... but within 24 hours most of the vegetables had mold and/or were covered in some sort of fungus. I found 3 caterpillars inside my corn, which was rotted on the inside. Drove 45 minutes from my town, but will NOT be going back. To add, I stored it all the way I have always stored my farm fresh veggies, and have NEVER had a problem.
Amazing!!!!! It was our fist time going and the owner and staff take the time out to give you a tour and background history of the place. The $20 bag deal is sooo amazing. I love shopping local especially when I know its going back into the community. Would give it 10 stars if I could.
Owner was very agitated that I bought their big pumpkin. I asked a worker if I could buy it before I picked it up, the workers said it was okay. Other than that it’s a pretty nice place.
I was shocked that the owner followed myself and my wife to our car, got in my comfort zone to the point he was less then a foot from m and was basically shocked that we didn’t buy something. I felt like he wanted to honestly start a fight. Would not recommend this place. Especially if you have kids. Not a friendly environment. I will be sharing this awful experience with everyone I know.
Amazing experience. Spent too much money and not even mad at it!! Got yellow and orange watermelons, the $20 bag of huge, delicious other produce, some awesome sorbet, and good local products (shrimp, jam, sauces, pork bbq).
Cool place, but we came for Christmas Trees. $360 may be market price, but is too steep for us. This isnt a knock against Perkins Orchard staff- the market is what the market is. This is just an average, 3-star informational review for others trying to navigate the shortage this year. We found a similar tree elsewhere for less.
Donovan is an amazing entrepreneur that has kept his grandparents fruit stand thriving for over 20 years. He is intelligent and knows his products. Great fruits and vegetables that taste different than your big chain grocery stores. Check him out...I promise you will not be disappointed.
High quality Produce, 1st class customer service. Donovan Watson is a true community hero!If you’ve never been let them know it’s your first time & you’ll be given a brief tour upon entry & it will totally enhance your shopping experience.
First time going to this establishment. David was very helpful. Thank you and we will return.
Fresh produce and friendly people! They genuinely care about each person that walks in and have excellent prices
Overpriced and over-hyped. They don’t post prices and then surprise you at the checkout after they have you. Be aware of owners who tell you how they “don’t nickel & dime” their customers.
Very friendly, down to earth & informative staff. Great selection available. Looking forward to going again.
Super awesome place with great prices on produce. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and kind! We loved speaking with Colin.
Truly an amazing hidden gem! Donovan is maybe the nicest person Ive ever met and had the pleasure of meeting one of the farmers today who makes the best chorizo Ive had in North Carolina! Better late than never wish Id found them earlier but Ill be back plenty!
First time visiting. Very organized. Supporting local farms.
Very interesting place. Purchased some great items at an affordable rate.
Love the produce,, fresh vegetables and you can also get meat, and talk with the farmers there.
There was a variety of options to choose from. Fresh fruits and vegetables are always a good choice! The owner was very nice and entertaining! Had a hometown feeling.
Good fresh fruit and produce. Staff were friendly and helpful the explanation to first time buyers. I will definitely be back.
I loved the tour and history of this place, and its nice to keep places like this going!
This was my first time going and I am so glad that I did. I usually go to the Farmers Market, but when I cant get there by noon, I miss out. Perkins Orchard is near my house and there are so many varieties of fruit. The $20 bounty bag is perfect. I will stop by weekly to get out fresh produce and other local items.
Unfortunately it’s temporarily closed right now, but I come here all of the time for my produce!! I was truly shocked reading some of these reviews as I have NEVER had a bad experience with them, the staff has always been nothing but respectful to me and my boyfriend. I love their $20 bag deal, and I LOVE the fact that it’s black owned! Plenty to choose from and you can even buy meats.... Can’t wait until it opens back
Best produce in Durham and a 1 stop shop for produce, meats, and treats. The 1 peck bag for $20 is the best deal in town.
It was absolutely lovely, and will definitely become a weekly venture. Thank you guys for being so nice, Im in love already.
Best produce and the affordability can’t be beat! I love that it’s truly supporting local and the produce is so fresh. If you go on saturdays, there’s a farmers market vibe with other vendors.
Perkins orchard is a very interesting place, in fact that produce is very tasty and the prices are reasonable. I really enjoyed shopping here. The reason why I gave this place a 1 star is mainly due to how my wife and I were treated by the owner. He gave a tour, which was very informative, but when we asked follow up questions, we were given very passive-aggressive remarks and were not given any respect. The owner was very unprofessional and we’ve heard similar things from others. However, the staff was AMAZING! They were all so nice and helpful, unlike the owner. I’d suggest going, but if you happen to encounter the owner, steer clear as much as possible. My wife and I were very disappointed to be treated with so much disrespect and attitude from what seemed to be like a great business. 1/5
Awesome welcomeGreat varietyCustomer service was on point.
We love Perkins!! Weve gotten produce all year, got our pumpkins there and just tonight got our Christmas tree from Donovan!! We took advantage of their $99 December deal (8ft tree, $20 bag deal including free cheese, and 2 jarred goods) The tree alone was $92 so we basically got $50 worth of produce/jarred goods free!!Oh and we will stop by on the way to school in the morning because Donovan is making SNOW!!!
Great spot, great value and selection and wonderful people😃
The $20 deal bag is pretty awesome. I got 2 huge Honeycrisp apples, 1 small cabbage, 4 end of season tomatoes, about a pint of cherry tomatoes, a small eggplant, a medium red onion, a small bunch of bananas, a ripe plantain plus they gave me a free pineapple. Things Id like to have gotten - beautiful oyster mushrooms. Sorry I missed the orange watermelons this summer. The owner gives newbies a quick tour and history of this Black-owned family business thats thrived in Durham for 50 years. Ill definitely be back.
Stickerless, never-packaged, handpickeds, non-refrigerated, and no receipt printing!
Staff are very friendly and helpful. There is a great variety of produce available. The story of this establishment is inspiring!
Everyone is super friendly and knowledgeable. I love this place!
Fresh, friendly, fantastic. Absolutely drop in and enjoy.
I needed some fruit. But found an aloe vera leaf for my heat rash also.
Fantastic $20.00 bag deal!
What an amazing experience! I am new to NC and my daughter in MD suggested that I visit Perkins Orchard. It was such a wonderful experience. I was greeted with a smile and a lovely welcome, then I received a brief tour. I learned a lot about the business and its owner. I then went shopping taking advantage of the $20 promotion to fill a bag with produce and also get a free product. I couldnt wait to tell my daughter, so I text her pictures from the parking lot. I felt very safe as the staff and customers wore masks and practiced social distancing. I will definitely be back. Thank you Perkins Orchard for your professionalism, delicious produce, and noteworthy customer service.
Lovely place! Good selection, parking, and you get a free item with the $20 bag. Washed off and cut up my cherry tomatoes as soon as I got home, and theyre delicious! Will definitely return, doesnt get much fresher than this. Got me excited to get my garden beds done soon!
I love going here. Love the 20.00 bag. Always clean.
It was my first time there today. The employees were so helpful and nice when explaining how the pricing works. I cant wait to go back there in the Spring when they reopen.
This place is amazing! Weve lived in Durham for a few years and recently visited for our first time. They have a wide assortment of produce, local poultry, and baked goods. The prices are reasonable and more importantly, it supports local businesses. The owner and team are extremely professional and courteous and also felt very safe in the COVID era. Will be back!!!
This place is simply awesome. The staff are so knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. The $20 bag is an unbelievable bargain for such fresh fruits and veggies! You don’t have to wait till Saturday to go to a farmers market.. Perkins is open 7 days a week till 8pm!
Amazing fruits, vegetables, service, and owner! We stopped here last week and were really impressed with the variety of items as well as the history. They even carry yellow watermelons which are very rare! This orchard was started by a young entrepreneur who started selling fruits and vegetables as a child and carried on the family tradition. He was on-site and is very active in the operation. He personally gave us a tour and warmly welcomed us. Not only did we receive incredible hospitality, but everything we bought was delicious! 😋🍉🥑🥭
Nice fruits and vegetables from local growers and from outside the area. They also carry local honey, specialty ciders, and locally produced jams, jellies, and condiments. The owner, Donovan, is a good, honest businessman. When youre there, take advantage of their $20 fill the bag special, which also includes a free item in addition to the field bag of fruits and veggies.
Stay Away. Owner is extremely aggressive and engages in highly unprofessional behavior. He insulted myself first, then turned to my wife and proclaimed is this what you have to put up with. He then chased after our truck up his gravel driveway, scaring kids in the vehicle. Highly unusual. Mentally, he is not someone to engage in business with. Many other options for pumpkins, fruit and Christmas trees. Owners response below is laughable. Notice he doesnt mention or defend his insults to the female PhD scientist in the family; inexcusable male misogynistic behavior. Others have commented here one the same problems with this business owner. Stay away, no reason to patronize someone like this.
The staff is friendly and the produce looked great. I will return and continue to support our local farmers and small businesses.
We love Perkins, especially finding out its walking distance from our house. As others have said, great prices and very friendly staff. The selection is great too! And the sorbet is delicious. Oh my.
Today was my second time here and it was absolutely wonderful! Love the $20 bag deal and that it’s dog friendly. Nice other vendors (sweets & fish).
I have been following their Facebook for 3 years and finally visited them. It was amazing. Donovan is the most polite owner and you can tell he truly loves what he does. Our first visit and he introduced himself and a the history of the business. I have never had that kind of experience. The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. The 20 dollar bag is ABSOLUTELY the best deal. Plus you get a free item as well? They have a HUGE selection of produce, fruits, jams, honey and all amazing prices. I am never buying produce anywhere else. The fruits actually have the taste they are supposed to! I encourage anyone and everyone to get their produce here. I would give them a higher rating if I could, but it only goes up to 5. Thank you Mr. Donovan and staff so much!! Also the sorbet is amazing.
Great products, great service, locally owned, highly recommended!
I love this farmer’s market so much. The staff is always super helpful and kind. It’s also great that they give you a free item if you purchase the $20 fill up bag.
I love this place! Fresh produce and veggies. Meat and seafood vendors on site. Everything is really good. Friendly helpful staff!
The owner, Donovan, greeted us himself and gave a concise, informative explanation as to the history of the family business, and how its grown since 1970. The market has grown into a wonderful, homey operation which now includes DELICIOUS home-made sorbet, as well as fondue fridays! The selection is remarkable, and the prices even better! This is a MUST VISIT attraction!
The staff was friendly and I love the history lesson given to first time visitors. The products were amazing and fresh. I’ve been back two in the last two weeks. Mangos & Cantaloupes were sweet. I took home the fresh all natural strawberry sorbet which stayed frozen even though I didn’t get home for more than two hours. Love this place.
Unfortunately I will not be going back to Perkins Orchard. Last week my family bought a 9ft tree there for $170. When we got home and took off the netting, the bottom 1/3 of the tree had no needles and the branches were darkened and looked diseased. When I called the owner he was very nice and said he would make it right and to text him pictures. After not getting a reply I finally called him and he was so nasty to me and refused to acknowledge that he said he would make it right. Finally he texted me to “check my PRIVILEGE “. My husband cut off the bottom 1/3 of the tree and we donated it to a needy family. I own a small local business and try to support local businesses. But I will not go back to Perkins Orchard.
My Mom told me about Perkins Orchard today she brought me a jar of there Five Alarm Pepper Jelly. She knows I love spicy foods etc. The hotter the better 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥... So I just took my wife there today and she loved it. The people were helpful, friendly and very knowledgeable about where and how the food was grown. We have plans to go back again real soon. This is truly a gem of a place to go and share the experience with family, friends, and your kids...👍👍👍👍👍
Wow! A great open-air produce market providing farm-fresh fruit, vegetables, butter, jams, honey and other items. Over 300 local farms supply a continuing stock of deliciousness. This is a family business existing for 50 years, black-owned, which moves more farm produce than any competitor in the state.
Great place. The owner is very hands on. We got a quick tour from him. I must’ve bough the best honey I’ve had in my life.
It was my familys first time here, so we were given a tour of the place, and were told about their 50 years of business. All the staff were VERY welcoming, great deals and prices, and a vast variety of things to pick from! All fruit was very fresh! I will definitely be visiting here again soon with more people!
Friendly staff and great produce!
Love this place, especially their $20 bags!
Great place to buy fruits, vegetables, and more at a great price!
I was pleasantly surprised by the operation after going down the driveway. As a first time visitor you are provided a tour by the owner. I was further impressed by the variety and quality of produce offerings. I will definitely be a repeat customer.
