Couch Oil Company is my choice for gasoline. The fueling station conveniently located in Durham offers Non-Ethanol 90 Octane Gas, premium diesel, and all other grades of gas. It’s rare to find a gasoline provider that is locally owned and operated. I appreciate the high quality of their gasoline and also that I get to give my business to a local Durham company. More and more, Im finding that local companies meet my car needs better than large corporations.

Couch Oil has taken great care of my family for the past few years. They clearly explained their pricing policy and, while propane isnt cheap, their prices are fair. Couch Oil has given me great service for over a decade. I get automatic fill up service, and theyve never missed a fill up. When a lightning strike a year ago caused a gas leak, they immediately came over, helped me, found the source of the leak, and fixed it. Always friendly service from great people!

Like many industries, the product is expensive, no matter what company you choose, and, obviously, no one wants to spend their money on it. That being said, their prices are always competitive. Retail pump facilities are almost always clean. Ive driven across town for over 3 years to purchase no ethanol gas for my cars ( better MPG). Their prices are reasonable. The 90 octane no ethanol fuel is a few pennies more per gallon than mid grade fuel containing ethanol. So many places gouge you with their no ethanol prices. Couch Oil is locally owned and the owners are involved in the community.Are several potholes in the pavement at the entries off of Hillborough Road and Main Street that need to be repaired.

Let’s be honest - propane is expensive. Everywhere. That being said, there isn’t much, other than service, to separate a propane company from the pack. Couch truly exceeds in this area. They helped me out by finding a budget plan in order to keep the bill from growing to a large, unmanageable point. I normally have my heating oil delivered. I only needed a little that was less than the delivery limit. They allowed me to come get the needed oil. It was good to see the place where I buy my oil. Not only was it nice to see the family owned business place, but they were very friendly and helpful.

There is tiered pricing for propane. The first price drop is at 100 gallons. Originally I had them set up on auto fill. The past 4 times they came, it was just under 100 gallons. I wish they would have just pumped the extra few gallons into the wind to save me some cash. Im on their call-as-needed plan now.

I have been super impressed with Couch Oil Company. They charged me half of what another company was going to charge. They came out that day to help me and my family. We were in a rental home and new to propane heating the house and water- another company couldnt fit us in to their schedule until a week later (even though it was freezing outside). Several Couch employees bent over backwards to help us get heat and hot water-they even worked in the cold rain past 5 pm to make sure we were set up. Just filled my 2005 Powerstroke tank with Couch Oil diesel for the third time and doubt I will buy fuel anywhere else in The Triangle. Couch pre-treats all their diesel fuel with DIESELMATE from Certified Labs in Irving, TX. I noticed smoother acceleration literally with the first tankful when we were still having morning temps in the low 20s in the Raleigh-Durham NC area. Couch diesel is about a nickel less per gallon than undiscounted BP and I surely haven’t missed measuring out and pouring in a shot of expensive anti-stiction additive every other fill-up.Today I met the Certified Labs rep at Couch’s historic downtown station. He explained the additive insures combustion occurs at top dead center, not the downstroke. So smoother running was not my imagination.We feel very blessed to retire in North Carolina and whenever possible try to support Durham County businesses and NC Agriculture even though we are guests here. Couch Oil Company has been part of downtown Durham since 1949 and has heated thousands of homes and fueled many farms. Life is too short to gas up at chain filling stations.

On the way back from teaching my 11th grade English class in Raleigh, I almost ran out of gas. On purpose. I drove past at least five national chains while my friend nervously watched the “Empty Tank” light glow red. We pulled into a gas station across from the water filtering plant on Hillsborough. That’s 2907 Hillsborough, the location of Couch Oil, supplying Durham for 70 years. My friend Willard and I watched the gas pump numbers roll up. We have a game of trying to guess how much will fill the tank. I estimated 10 ½ gallons, 10 ¾ was his estimate. He was closer. Pumping gas at Couch Oil gives me a good feeling that I never get at international conglomerate stations; there I get Sour Patch Kids. I gave up the the sweets because I wanted to lose weight and because bringing our business there supports Durham community.About six months ago, I noticed how Couch is involved in Durham. The company supports TROSA, the Emily K Center (I’m an English high school teacher) and Durham Rescue Mission (I’m not just a supporter, I’m also a customer), non-profits close to my heart. They provide a $1,000 scholarship for college-bound students from the Triangle area; hopefully my niece will get one...Impressed with the community engagement, I sent a brief message through their website. Steve Couch, the President Himself, replied with an an invitation to drop by. That was the first time I’ve talked with the president of a multi-million dollar company. He showed me the offices, pictures from earlier, smaller days a few years after World War II when his dad started the company. He was nice enough to ask about my involvement in Old West Durham. At the time, our neighborhood was weighing the pros and cons of a Neighborhood Protective Overlay (NPO). The intention of the NPO was to preserve the historical appearance community atmosphere of Old West Durham. Strong opinions for and against.Being a Couch Oil customer, on the other hand, I only think of reasons for. Buying their gas increases the social capital of my neighborhood.Couch does all the work - supporting non-profits I admire, providing jobs for my neighbors. Lucky me that all I need to do be a customer.
