I wanted to give the store the benefit of the doubt but the rest of the review are accurate. Owner is incredibly rude and has no interest in making sales. We were 10 minutes late to a 45 minute appointment we made weeks in advance because of a traffic accident and he refused to sell to us. Completely wasted our time because I guess we hurt his pride over something we couldn’t control. Won’t be coming back, which is disappointing because we really wanted to like this place.

As a first time gun buyer, I decided to go here as I grew up in El Cerrito. I did my test, completed it and purchased a $700.00 firearm. After my 10day waiting period I return to the store to pick up my gun. Upon entering the store other customers were there, the store owner then tells the other customers in the store that my right to buy a firearm was denyed and my paperwork was denyed and they all had a good laugh about it. This is how I find out that I was denyed my right to buy a gun, by having the gun store owner and strangers laughing at me. They laugh at my expense.The owner didnt even want to give me a refund for my gun and seemed angry when I asked for one. He then took and kept 10% from the total of purchase price.I will never return here for the rest of my life. My girlfriend also was treated rudely by these guys on a different occasion. Now I understand why none likes gun fuds.

Pretty rude person answering the phone, I guess he was just so tired of answering questions that he’s just rude to every caller now. I’d spend money for a Walmart gun before I shopped here.

I went in to buy a gun and take the Firearms Safety Certificate (FSC) Test. The owner was very helpful and it was an overall great experience.

Highly Knowledgeable sales staff. Purchases were smooth andwould repeat buying from Old West as they really can answerjust about any question fire arms related. I would however adviseif selling on consignment, to consider using Gunbroker.comas I had 2rifles for sale there and they didnt move for over 6 months.I took them back and had my FFL list them on gun broker.com Allgone in 7 days for 20 percent plus more than they were listed for at OldWest. I again recommend Bob and great to do business with but onconsignment sales would use a shop with more foot traffic or an auction.

The owner is a very nice guy, any question I ask him on the antique guns, he takes the time to explain and tell me the history. He has good library on antiques for reference as well. Very easy to work with him.

Shop owner did not keep his word on a transfer he agreed to do for me. As soon as he was contacted by the seller he backed out last minute! I wish I could give a better review but I was very disappointed with the “service” they have

This is a very reasonable shop, especially for its location. Prices are unpar with locations in much more gun friendly areas. The owner is also very knowledgeable and helpful if you have questions.

Attitude is everything as a salesperson. These people lack that. Was a first time buyer and glad I didn’t spend my money here. I clearly stated I was a first time buyer and was treated poorly. Like I was supposed to know everything already.

Not the friendliest of people behind the counter. Inventory seemed skinny as well. Ill be looking for a different store next time.

Havent been into the shop in quite a while, but have to say I was always impressed with their courtesy, knowledge, communications skills and overall professionalism. The inventory has never been a disappointment, either; always interesting pieces on hand. Over the years Ive referred several of my friends and the outcomes have always been positive. Very pleased that theyre around.

Nice people. Theres a lot of cool guns and various other items to see. The store is a little unorganized but other than that its a cool gun store (and its the only one around Berkeley, I think)

DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS SHOP!!Ive tried to be very patient with the people that work here and all I can say is theyre complete A-holes when it comes to helping out their customers. Any questions or concerns that I bring up and these guys are rolling their eyes and scolding at the fact the I even asked. Find better customer service.

This is the greatest firearms store in the Bay Area. The name says it all. The owner of this establishment is extremely knowledgeable regarding all manner of traditional sporting and vintage arms and is an ardent practitioner of firearms safety at all times. That is why I have 100% confidence in the products and services provided. I have purchased several firearms over the last 20 years at the Old West and every time I have gotten excellent service, and the prices vary from very competitive to unbeatable. However, this shop does no business in black guns.

I must say I like this place. They were straight to the point, know the law and are not pushy at all....... I went in about 7 years ago to purchase a 9mm. The owner showed me how to use it, and gave me the best option for accessories. For some reason I dont think they are desperate to sell to people who come in. They are working with responsible potential buyers and gun owners. Dont get caught up in looking at the cosmetics of the faculty. Your not going there to take a nap. Overall a great place to purchase a firearm.

Actually came a few years back but my experience was so bad I never even bothered coming again. The people who work there have absolutely no care at all for their customers and were extremely condescending. Dont come here if you want to learn about guns, and dont come here even if you just want to get a gun. These people should not be in business.

First came here a few years ago to get my handgun safety certificate with my friend, who also is a minority, i dont like playing the race card but the old man who ran the shop was exceptionally rude. Ive had my share of rude gun shop owners but this was unlike anything Ive ever experienced. Im giving this place 1 star only because the building looks cool. If you are seeking honest opinions on firearms or looking for a good deal, this is NOT the place.

I love this place. I buy guns at the Old West Gun Room and have my FFL out of state transfers shipped there. It took me many months to get accepted, but all small guns stores are like that. Bob and his coterie of enthusiasts are all knowledgeable and, after a while, friendly. I like that Bob doesnt sell any black rifles, but has a great selection collectible and high quality modern guns.

I don’t know if I met a clerk or a boss. I was very rude to others. I started to talk to him. I was talking to him and he answered the phone without saying excuse me. Finally told me not to show me again, maybe because I am an Asian, this racist shop will never go again

Very helpful and friendly people. If youre looking for a place to get real information from people who know what theyre talking about, this place is great. Its not some big chain gun store.

This is my first time to enter a gun shop, and I do not feel like I had any of the issues that some negative reviews stated. There were plus me two Asians and an African American, and the owner treated all of us just fine.The owner is definitely not the kind of person will actively come and chat with you. But if you know what you want and ask, you will get all the answer you want, straight to the point.The rifles they have are interesting as well, you can find some interesting old guns. Although the price might not be the most competitive. I ended up just getting my FSC and not buying anything, but this is for sure a good place to check out, even if you are a first timer as I was.

I had to wait like everybody else. I got the same great attention when it was my turn. He kept me from buying a used 911 that would have been a great collector item but not good for practice due to slide issues. Always satisfied with the service and purchases. You can order legal guns he doesnt have in store. .Ive been to stores where the service was different because of what I look like. I was a young 26 yr old when I bought my first here, and over 15 years later Im still happy to just be another customer waiting my turn.

Im at a loss to understand the (negative) experiences of so many of these reviewers. My only conclusion has to be: hyper-sensitivity. Old West Gun Room is an oasis of information and coolness. OK, the owner isnt gushing with warmth; there are tea rooms for that. He knows his stuff, is incredibly informative, efficient and helpful. His humor is VERY dry, maybe people are misinterpreting that. I am always there with a POC, and Ive detected no racism or condescension towards him or anyone else in the store. There is a certain kind of masculine oneupmanship involved in things like gun purchasing (and instruments, and cars). You have to expect that in any shop. Visit with confidence, and bring money: youre sure to find something you like -- the selection is amazing for such a small venue... and theres always something new and interesting.

This is a great place to visit and check out some great old guns. This is where I do all of my purchasing and ordering of guns. This place has for as long as I can remember. Small gun stores like these are what makes America truly great.

Went in a few years ago, I was young didnt know crap about guns and was accompanied by my Spanish boyfriend at the time... wasnt even acknowledged by the old man.. there were a couple other older WHITE gentlemen and they were all conversating with each other like we werent even there.. ended up walking out with no help at all. I called the shop a few months ago just to get some prices and information... spoke to me like I was stupid and was also no help then as well... really sucks that this is the only store around. Wouldnt even give one star but guess I have too.

BEWARE You most likely will be treated like a second class human if youre anything but a White guy here. It took the owner 10 minuets to even say hello to me, he even greeted 2 other White guys that came in after me, but he could only sneer at me. ?? ..Im a clean cut Native American man in my 50s and the owner treated me with no respect what so ever. Old time shop look all you want. If a used gun has a problem he will tell you. Prices are good. Or average. The new chain gun shops are a lot of stress with all the sales men lined up that do have a clue about guns !!!

Great experience! For first timers, read my tips at the bottom.I walked in for the first time on a Tuesday morn and Bob (the owner) was helping a couple. Afterwards he tended to me. He gave me his thoughts/opinions on his preferences. I made a purchase, price was somewhat on par with other stores, and I returned less than two weeks later to pick-up.Bob is a straight shooter, no nonsene guy, with a sense of humor dry as dust. Youll either love him or hate him. Just know hes a great guy. Hes selling tools capable of killing and theres been two attempted robberies at that store so hes not interested in playing around or being buddies with everyone walking in.Tips for first time visitors:- dont treat it like a toy store and ask to view/pull out everything- do your due dilligence and/or testing before you arrive- have an idea of what youre in the market for- ask questions- be respectful

Called them to ask for an FFL transfer to be an Ar15 online to have it shipped there. Thought i had the wrong number, person on the phone answered; Hello....(akward silence) so i proceeded to ask if they were able to do a transfer. At first he said yeah, and then followed by him asking what gun. Once i said Ar15 rifle he sounded scared and pretty much hung up.Being more professional would be nice. As far as customer service over the phone i give it a 1star( zero if i could)

Its been there forever. My dad bought there. Had work done there. Bob, the owner, has no patience for silliness. That is to say, when he thinks youre asking a dumb question, he will let you know. He is not racist, he is an equal opportunity cranky, moody SOB. But he knows his stuff, and he wont sell you crap. His ammo prices are fair (same or better than shops like Big5), and you might learn something when you go there. PPTs are not his favorite thing to do. And thats understandable, because he makes about $15 to $20 for a bunch of headache paperwork. If you go and feel treated poorly, dont worry about it. Theres a method to his madness. I can only imagine the kind of people that come in looking for a gun that he (and anyone with a clear head) would most definitely not want running around with a gun. By the time he starts to recognize you, you will have learned how to handle him. I hope he stays for a while longer. Its the last shop in the area.

Came in today for a Private Party Transfer. Employee there had an attitude about doing PPT. They also lack the knowledge and accused us of trying to transfer an illegal weapon. Dont come here to do PPT on rifles. Pistol maybe ok. Call to ask before coming in.

Usually I never write reviews at all but I need to do a PPT and reading the last review Im deciding not to, and also to share my last experience there years ago, very similar to the native american mans review a few down. Unfortunately, it seems like a norm at this place.

Dying shop. Weapons and ammo selection is very poor. Prices are sky high for used things. The owner himself sounds kind of crazy, in my opinion. Very paranoid and unfriendly to foreigners. Avoid this place!
