We had an old outdated and non-working landscape lighting system and decided it was time to replace and upgrade our lighting design to include new LED lighting fixtures. Our existing under ground wiring and hub system was in good working order so we began our search for a lighting contractor who had an excellent reputation, could leverage the existing working components, who impressed us with their teams knowledge, and who we felt would deliver an excellent solution for our project.We choose Lighting Distinctions and right off we developed great chemistry with Joel and his team. I have used Lighting Distinctions for years. They have provided excellent exterior lighting in my prior home as well as my current home. We recently built a pool and a new patio so we decided the lighting should be at the same level as the landscaping. While were planning the back yard, we decided to the the front yard as well to bring a nice ambiance to the entrance. Joel was always timely, courteous and frankly a pleasure to deal with. It never seemed like a business transaction but more like having a friendly neighbor come over, drink coffee, and talk lighting design.Joel and Mauricio ended up installing a beautiful array of up lights and down lights on our palms and also discreet spotlights throughout. Once the initial lights were installed there was a lot of changes for wattage, filter color, locations, etc and Joel was super patient and helpful.From the moment we installed the lights our neighbors have been effusive in their praise. Not wanting to look garish or over the top, the lighting came out perfect. We completed an eight month remodel of our house in Rancho Santa Fe and wanted to highlight the property. We saw other homes which had both indoor and outdoor lighting done by Joel at Lighting Distinctions and were very impressed with their work. We met with a number of other outdoor lighting companies but they did not have the artistic vision that Joel and his staff provided. He highlighted our palms, pepper and olive trees with unusual creative lighting techniques---the results were amazing. The other firms charged the same amount of money but merely provided a standard generic approach to landscape lighting. The end result was to truly bring the indoor/outdoor concept of southern California living alive for us.His staff was knowledgeable, prompt and courteous. We had some challenges with an older home and they resolved some difficult electrical issues. Their placement of the lights and the shadow effects were truly understated elegance. They experimented with different light colors and positions on many visits, giving us time to absorb the effect. Joel’s goal is to insure you are 100% pleased, and he accomplished this. They also went beyond the call of duty and suggested some inexpensive solutions for our indoor lighting. When I first met Joel from Lighting Distinctions, one of my biggest concerns was that my house not look like Disneyland or like the house down the street that looks like you can land a plane on it. Joel and his team installed a FREE lighting demo in my whole front yard, and let me observe it for a a week. He showed me several different bulbs colors, from warmer to cool. From here I was able to see exactly what I’d be getting!I also wanted to make sure I could see and get to my horses at night, while having a gentle light illuminating their stalls. But I definitely did not want to have the tall path lights that would make my house look like an airport runway. Joel and his team demonstrated 2 different options for me to review, where there was nothing sticking above the ground and would still provide ample path and walkway lighting. He also demonstrated for me the benefits of moonlighting, where the paths are illuminated from the trees above. This gives a really pretty, natural light.Another thing I liked and was surprised by was the option to control my lights from my iPhone from anywhere and I can control each zone separately. This helpful when I’m out of town and need to turn my lights on at the touch of a button from my phone.I am a tough person to please and I know exactly what I want and Joel and his team really went above and beyond my expectations.I couldn’t give a higher recommendation than Lighting Distinctions.

Excellent design and superior service. After taking quotes from three vendors, Lighting Distinctions was the clear winner. In addition to the traditional front yard and pathway lighting, we wanted an understated elegance for the backyard pool and entertainment area. The design Joel presented was by far the best and included the use of various filters to create the ambiance we wanted.Joel has an eye for the art of lighting design as well as the science. We had installed new LED landscape lighting a couple of years ago, but a number of lights at the front lawn had stopped working. We tried to get the company that installed them to come and fix the problem, and to also install a few more lights, as well. However, they had done such an unprofessional job that I had given them a very bad review; consequently they never returned our calls to set up an appointment.We found Lighting Distinctions via an ad in a mailer, called them up and had them come out. Immediately, I could tell these were the experts we needed to do the job. The cost was more than I had expected, but affordable. The work was done on time with little fuss, and in a very professional manner. They even corrected some of the shoddy work the original contractor had left behind. I recommend them highly.

They provided us a clear detailed quote and gave us pricing flexibility by generating different quotes with different grade fixtures. This was far superior to other companies who gave us one less detailed quote. Overall the bid was very competitive and Joel suggested that he could set up a demo for others in the community to see and comment on. As the HOA board took quite some time to review bids and discuss options, the process dragged out over several months. Joel was very patient with our schedule and in the end, we decided to use Lighting Distinctions. The installation went very smoothly and the job was completed on time. Don’t know what we would of done without them! We interviewed and requested quotes from multiple companies prior to finding Joel. We were amazed at how many companies were out there with bad business practices. After having issues with our landscaper we decided to look for a professional landscape lighting company and we are so happy we did. Lighting Distinctions did absolutely perfect work in my home and I would highly recommend them to all. I initially found the business on Yelp, and emailed them for a quote. Within 24 hours I received an email response from the owner, Joel, asking to set-up a time for a free estimate of the job. We agreed on a time for Joel to visit our house and he arrived on time. During his visit he was professional, friendly, funny, and appeared to be very knowledgeable regarding all types of lighting. He made recommendations on how to light our kitchen, tv room, living and dining rooms. The following week Joel returned to our home and presented the quote for the work in person so he could explain everything and answer any questions we had. My husband and I appreciated him taking the time to explain everything. One of my biggest concerns was the drywall damage and repair that would have to be done for the work to be done. Joel assured me that they would only have to make very small holes and that he had a professional drywall repair person who he had used for 20+ years that was excellent and would do the work the same day that the lights were installed.As most people do we wanted to get a few other quotes before we decided to get the work done. So, we also reached out to other lighting/electrical companies on Yelp and only 1 other even took the time to respond. That estimate was not a good experience to say the least. The electrician explained that a lot of our ceiling, and walls would have to be ripped up in order to do the lighting we wanted. He also said he didnt have anyone to do the patch work and that it would be a huge mess. To say the least he did a horrible job of winning us over and his bid was very high for what seemed like a mess for us to clean up.In conclusion, we decided to work with Joel from Lighting Distinctions and it was the right decision. The work was completed on time, correctly, within our budget, and the dry wall repair was done perfectly the same day. All workers were friendly, and professional. Joel even gave us our kitchen lights for free- which was awesome and look fantastic. We would recommend Lighting Distinctions to anyone looking to brighten up their home a bit!
