They are the absolute worst. I rented a U-box to transport my sons items from Evanston, IL to California. On the day that it was supposed to be accessible they moved the location of the box to another Uhaul an hour away from theirs; they claimed they had no boxes and no room for a U-box.When I contacted support I found this was a blatant lie. Support arranged for my U-box to be where it should be- the Dempster st location. My friends who were going to load it for me did not have access until almost 48 hours AFTER they were supposed to be able to load it. The manager agreed to keep it another day for that reason, but shipped it anyway. He then agreed to provide another box, free of charge, to be shipped to my house ( as I had arranged for the original box).I was not given any information, emails or calls, and my friends also called, physically went over to the Dempster st location and kept on getting blown off. I finally figured out it had arrived in CA. It is currently sitting in Rancho Dominguez, and the Dempster st manager neglected to comp the box, leaving me with a charge of more than 1000 dollars that needs to be sorted out, this after hours of being on the phone with U-haul. Never again.
I dont know what all the fuss is about with the negative reviews. Read the fine print. For instance, you cant just drop off your rental after hours and leave. Theres an app you use. Otherwise, yep, extra charges. And Ive never been to a rental place that moves very quickly because patrons are usually not prepared for all the proof of this and that, and end up digging through their wallets and such.So, really, these folks were very nice and quite helpful, and I found the rates reasonable. And I got the app, so late night drop off was great. Just a note: the keys go in a drop box by the garage behind the lobby building. They could use a sign or two pointing to it.
There is no direct number so its impossible to to speak to anyone to issues that may pop up.
Ive only gotten boxes and tape here, and there were plenty to choose from. They also let you return unused ones. Its easy to shop here and the people who work here are friendly and helpful. Easier than dealing with Home Depot or places in the city, and the prices are affordable. Its spacious as well and seems pretty clean and organized.
I want to start off by saying I’m very easy-going and try not to let things bother me, but my recent experience at Uhaul was TERRIBLE.I needed to tow my 1973 corvette to a few mechanics and had a choice between renting an 8 foot pickup and auto transport or paying a tow truck. I chose Uhaul, big mistake.I showed up for my 9am pickup and stood in an empty line waiting for one of the employees to greet me. Eventually one looked up from their phone and asked how they could help me. We went outside and nothing was prepared or ready, despite there being no other customers. The auto transport was filthy, it had clearly been used on a construction site or something similar and had dust and chunks of dirt all over it. This ended up transferring onto my 1973 corvette, which now requires a wash.It took 45 minutes for the employees to hook up the trailer, making a much later start to the day than I anticipated. As I started driving down the road, I heard a clanking sound coming from the trailer, so I pulled over to find the hydraulic jack banging on the ground. After several more times of this happening, I eventually tied it with some heavy duty straps.When I got to my destination to load the trailer, I realized the ratchet straps, used to secure the wheel of the car to the trailer were loose. These could have easily flown loose, gotten tangled in a tire and caused an accident. If I had been told about securing them, I clearly would have.After driving around all day with my corvette, I finally headed home. I was planning on parking the trailer and the pickup in the back of my garage, but the trailer wouldn’t detach because hydraulic jack was broken. Finding street parking at night on Chicago streets with a truck and trailer, that was a great end to a long day.After having so many hassles I wasn’t able to stop at my last shop, requiring me to go in the morning. For this reason I had to rent a second day (and spend another $100). I finally made it back to Uhaul, only to have the employees waste more of my time.I pulled the truck into the parking lot and got out. When I’ve returned trucks to other Uhaul locations, an employee comes to greet me and go through the process. This time no one came. After five minutes, I went inside and asked about returning the equipment. I was informed to go back outside and someone would be with me shortly.I went back outside and wait for 20 minutes, only to have an employee stand right next to me on their phone. Eventually they started looking at the mileage/gas etc. At this point he then asked me to repark the trailer into a spot. Keep in mind this was my first time driving pickup truck, let-alone one with a trailer attached. After a few attempts I got the trailer into the spot.I informed the employee of the problem with the hydraulic jack, at which point a few other employees came out to examine the trailer. At this point, no one had talked to me for 15 minutes and told me anything that was going on. An employee snapped at me (literally snapped is finger at me) and yelled “Hey, keys!” Lovely customer service.No one informed me of what was going on or anything of that nature. While they re-positioned the trailer, I got an email. The email was my bill from Uhaul. No one had gone over the bill with me or explained all the chargers. When I inquired about the bill and asked to have some cost removed due to the condition of the trailer and delay getting the trailer, I was practically scolded. I personally think a full refund would be fair.Eventually I was given a hard copy of the bill and told what the charges were. When I asked questions, I was condescended and ridiculed. I finally left after over an hour of dealing with hostile employees.Needless to say, I will never use this location again.
Friendly service and equipment and van was ready on time
We had a very stressful and eventful day on Sunday, but we found U-haul in Evanston, IL and they took all of our worries away. Yes, they are open on Sunday and that was very convenient.We rented a car tow dolly and the entire process was easy and we are happy that we found them.I do want to thank Chauncey for his professionalism and his patience with us.We want to wish him good luck in college and to make his family proud.
Absolutely would not recommend using this service. They did not tell me I had to inspect the condition of the vehicle, and then charged me $80 for a scratch that I DID NOT DO. AND I had insurance. Shameful business model.
They are rude and inconsiderate. Please make sure you do not leave anything behind such as keys because they will throw them away.
Expect an hour to pick up a truck. In my case the truck was broken, and they didn’t seem surprised when I told them. I drove 11 miles and they say I used 5 gallons. That’s 2.75 mpg and I didn’t let the truck idle and drove it nice.My advice, don’t use the app and stick around until you get a final receipt. Maybe I got lucky with a extra $12 charge. Maybe they charge customers for the 100’s of scratches and broken mirrors and such if you don’t take the insurance.The extra star is because the move was successful despite an aggravating experience with uhaul.

Take a picture of your miles before you pull off!!! These scammers got me for 15 extra miles!!! I started a new trip before I left on the odometer but didn’t take a pic. Would not trust these people again.

These guys were great. I had a reservation and when I showed up, everything was ready for me. I was out of there in 5 minutes. The truck was warmed up and pulled around for me. When I brought the truck back, they adjusted the charges because I didn’t use as many miles as I anticipated. My bill was correct and everything went well. I would highly recommend this location.
Easy reservation online and get good service. One time the tire pressure light turned on during driving. They honestly told me that it sometimes happens to that car, and will not charge me. Also, they will patiently go over the details of charged fee. One of the top choice for Evanston residents.
Booked a van online, went into store signed contract and everything was ready to go.Overall smooth experience. Very reasonable prices if you are just getting a rental for a few hours - to a day.On our way back to drop the rental off we realized that the location was now closed. We called the customer service line on our contract and the lady was extremely courteous and helpful.TIP: If you want to return a rental after normal business hours you can park it in any legal parking space, and place the keys in the drop-off box by the orange garage door.
DO NOT USE THIS LOCATION. Paid for gas to refill the truck back to the exact level at which it was rented (7/8) and even left the receipt for fuel back in the cab. They charged me $18 for returning with fuel at 3/4. Customer service is a joke and continues to pass the buck. Simply STAY AWAY and use another location or, even better, another truck rental company.
OK on phone (they were besieged when I called), awesome in person. Parking lot was full, so I asked three workers if I could briefly park by two unused trucks--no problem. The guys inside were accurate, fast, helpful, pleasant, and we had a good time including some laughs. The access to/from the store is via a light--very nice. I went back a second time, and had an even better experience. And, a third time. Ive moved cross-country many times, and plenty of other times. The staff- Adam and Jorge were patient, reasonable and great to work with. And deserve even more praise in light of the fact that the central customer service in Arizona is the absolute WORST in a half decade of dealing with central reservations teams! The centralized reservations team made so many mistakes that necessitated half dozen calls, undue stress, horrible customer service, false truths and incorrect information. If you are going to rent a uhaul- work with the Evanston facility staff directly- they are a joy. Otherwise, your experience will be the worst you can imagine- and you’ll want to RUN to another rental company!!
Buyers be ware of this locations unethical practice. They might trick you into paying double. Denise Ramirez told me $19.99 was only for 4 hours, that I needed to pay another $19.99 after 4 hours. When I called the cooperate number to extend my contract for 4 hours for another $19.99, I found out $19.99 was the rate for up to 24 hours! So I called this location to ask them why I was told $19.99 for only 4 hours, a woman said because all trucks were rented out so It was available for 4 hours only. Another lie--they had a parking lot full of trucks, I was also able to make an online reservation for the same type/same time/same location at the rate of $19.99 for 24 hours . They were a bunch of liars. Both women were snappy and mean. The second woman screamed that because I agreed to the rate so no matter what they would charge me another $19.99 after 4 hours and hung up the phone on me!!! They obviously tried to mislead people into a short contract time, so they can charge double when you go over the time. Stay away from this location if you can. If you have to rent a truck from them, make sure to reserve on U-hauls website before you go.
Ive rented trailers and trucks here many times. Sometimes the wait can be long if there is a line at the counter, but the staff always seems to be polite and helpful. Their stock of vehicles is substantial; I had to switch trailer sizes only once during a busy end-of-school-year weekend, and the staff was easy to work with and apologetic during the process.
This was by far the best uhaul location I’ve been to. The other locations I’ve been to have been terrible and these guys were smooth, quick and professional.

Convenient location, nice staff. However inside building is cold, uninviting, concrete walls and floor. No discussion about the vehicle. Just check gas, get in and go. I reserved online and answered questions online to avoid wait time, but still waited when I came in as other customers were ahead filling in their info. Good closing hoirs for Saturday.
I returned my moving van in clean condition, but was charged a cleaning fee of $25. Spent hours on the phone trying to reach customer service, and all they can do is have a manager call me in 3 to 5 days. Nobody picks up the phone, and if they do by mistake, they try to get rid of you without providing any answers. One of them took down my name and said somebody would call back, and of course, nobody called me back. This place makes its money by charging customers unnecessary fees and hoping they will be too exhausted by the run-around to bother asking for a refund. Dishonest crooks.
Do not use this location they dont tell you about hidden fees or return your calls or emails. Even called customer service and they told me manager would have to ok refund of $20 they never told me about but charged me for and still nothing its been a month now.

Im not a fan of this facility. The storage is safe and secure, but full of many unexpected fees. Dont budget for your initial quoted price to remain in effect, beyond that quote. And definitely, shop around.
In spite of reserving a small trailer a few months in advance, they didnt have one for me the day of the rental. They made me drive 8 miles further away to another U-haul location, where they only had a larger trailer for me. Nevertheless, the trailer I did get was in good condition and the one-way rental was very convenient.
Do not rent from this location unless youre looking for a scam! I had a less than 24-hour rental that I returned and in the same condition I received it. Three days later I received a charge on my credit card for $150 for equipment damage.I sent multiple emails requesting information about the charge which went unanswered. When I tried getting someone on the phone, I was told that Id either receive a call back (which never happened) or that they would send me an email with photos of the damage (which they never did).After multiple of these calls, the manager finally sent me an email which he said would include the photos of the damage. Instead I received an email from him with .htm attachments that contained gibberish. I finally had to work through my credit card company to dispute the charge.
Awful experience May 30th. I arrived there right at 7 to rent a trailer I had reserved from 6-9pm. There is one guy ahead of me in line. By the time he is done its 7:05 I get to the front and the man at the counter says sorry we close at 7 I cannot rent you the trailer. I explain to him that I was in the store on time and that I need to be moved out of my apartment by the next day. His response was oh well you can pick up the trailer when we open tomorrow morning at 6 am. I was able to rent a truck from Penske. They were way more friendly and will have my business from now on.
We rent U Hauls often, however we are using a different location since this location is not normally a good customer service experience. Dont bother checking in online, because they will do the same thing when you are there, which completely slows down the process. When they retrieve your truck it is also a slow process. Make sure you are not in a hurry.
Their products are decent, their facility is clean and presentable, and their staff is nice...until there is a problem. Then they are unprofessional, disrespectful, and they have zero idea how to deal with customers. One of their managers (I think hes the only man running the joint) is so uneducated and incapable of handling customer disputes its shocking he has a job there beyond mopping the floor. I filed a credit card dispute (successfully) and was refunded a large portion of my invoice because the staff at this U-HAUL is inept.Thankfully I moved across the country so I wont have to deal with them again. If I did live there I would never consider using this facility again. And going forward I will contact another company before considering U-HAUL.Good job, U-HAUL. I won the dispute and you wont be getting my service again. Ta-ta.
I rented a van and returned it within about 3 hours. I was charged initially $29.85, which is what I expected. When I got my Visa bill there was that charge plus an additional charge of $28.30 two days later! Trying to get any information from the u-haul franchise required endless times on hold. Finally, they told me that I needed to call my credit card company and give them a code they gave me to have the the charge cancelled. In other words, they billed me twice and then I have to deal with Visa to have it corrected. No explanation of why I was charged twice for the same rental or why u-haul couldnt fix it themselves.
Very bad location, staff is always busy on the phone and ignoring actual customers inside. Stuff is dishonest and the manager is a liar.The prices they have on display are NOT, I repeat, ARE NOT what are you going to pay, they will raise them after the first month, its basically a scam, you can try yourself or ask anyone who rented a unit there.I had a unit for a year that I paid in full, and after that decided to trash it, I called them and paid what I owe, and the guy on the phone assured me that Im 100% done (I even asked him twice), I left the country only to find out that theyre still charging me because of some document that they never mentioned, so I had to pay late fees AND the extra month they charged.In short, I will never ever do business at this location ever again.

They got hella trucks here. I had to move some stuff from one place to another and they was like, We gotchu famo. The trucks was mad nice. 4 wheels, windshields. Everything you need. I would have given this place five stars but the steering wheel had boogers on it.

We had a terrible experience, we had made a reservation online with them and something appeared to go wrong so I called to correct their mistake and they told me it has been fixed. So imagine my surprise when I came to pick up my Uhaul and they didnt have it. Not only that the manager of the store was incredibly rude and awful. Not only did he refuse to help he kept blaming the Uhaul call center for the mistake, either way U-Haul company is still associated with his store. Honestly, the worst customer service I have ever received.We ended up having to drive to Wilmett where the guys were super helpful
