I went in for issues with my violin. Brian was extremely knowledgeable about the issues i was having, and offered solutions that were simple yet effective. He really knows his stuff when it comes to violins. I would definitely send anyone who is having problems with their stringed instruments here, and for violins, to see Brian. Thank you so much for all of your input and all of your help. Definitely 5 stars. Id give more of i could.

This is your one stop shop for everything music! They have quality instruments for sale and great rental prices, books galore, all the supplies you may need, and professionals that know what they’re doing!! I got into a predicament with my cello and Dave was quick to come to the rescue. I wouldn’t have been able to encounter the same helpfulness and on the spot repair anywhere else. They’ve got a new customer for life. Thank you!!

I went to Foxes music just to come see and admire the store cause of all the instruments. It was my first time going there and usually i’m a anxious mess kind of a person. I was immediately greated by good ol Dave! (Welcoming and friendly) He showed me some books, amps, intruments, etc. demoed some pedals. Not once was there a pressure to buy or anything which was super nice! No sales pitch and I thoroughly appreciated that. I saw this mustang and he showed it to me and all was history! I walked out with a slammin deal and stand in top of that! Thanks so much Dave! Will definitely be coming back!

I bought a American professional 2 strat about 3 weeks ago and wasn’t feeling the rosewood neck, they let me exchange for a different guitar! Turns out when I got home the bridge pick up wasn’t working.. I’m a hour or so away so it was very hard for me to come back and forth, but they paid for the shipping to have it shipped there and back and gave me a brand new guitar with a free set up and a free pair of strings! Also gave me a free shirt and a guitar strap! These guys are awesome with working with you and making you as happy as can be. Highly recommend to anyone to check them out!

We have been going to this music shop for the past 3 years. Our friends who are musicians recommended this place. We’ve rented 2 violins from here, purchased music stands, got music teacher recommendations and everything else in between. The best part of this shop is the musicians who help with picking out the instrument. They seem very knowledgeable. Brian, one of the musicians who work there, helped us pick out a violin for our middle schooler. He is very patient, answering my multiple questions. He doesn’t rush you - and takes time to go over the multiple payment plans they have there. I would highly recommend working with him! The store manager there is also very knowledgeable and seems to know a lot about violins. We have younger children and will be back there to rent/purchase a violin.

As a local professional musician, I have to say that Foxes is a hugely important music store for me. It is the only store of its kind in the DC area and thus needs the support of the surrounding community to survive. I only deal with certain sections of the store and cannot speak to everything, such as instruments or lessons. I can say that they have a large selection of choral music to browse through. You can take out copies on perusal for a limited time and even purchase single copies, which is rare. There’s a decent selection of organ music as well, and large selections of piano and solo vocal music.Sure, the store is “old school,” has narrow aisles with some lack of organization, and occasionally the front desk staff is preoccupied and not always easily available, but these things are all forgivable in my mind since the store has so much to offer. Think twice before ordering music online; if you can support this one-of-kind local music store, please do! It provides essential services to many people from families with kids renting instruments, music teachers, and other music professionals like me.

Sad to say that I intend not to return to this store. Only positive thing I have to say is that they have a decent selection of sheet music.Otherwise:a) Parking is a disaster. If you enter from S Washington, theres the tiny little parking lot next to Foxes, but there is a sign indicating that the spots in that lot are for the other businesses next to Foxes.b) The way the store is arranged is not conducive to much movement. The aisles are very narrow, and people were trying out large instruments in those aisles. It was almost impossible to move around.c) When I went to check out, there was one employee who seemed to be working the register area, but he was preoccupied for several minutes while the person in line in front of me was inspecting and taking measurements of instruments (on the floor of the aisle adjacent to the register). There was what appeared to be another employee behind the register, but his eyes were glued to his phone and he was slowly exiting the register area. I guess it was the end of his shift. In the almost ten minutes that I was waiting to check out, there was no Someone will be right with you kind of remark.I really wanted to support a local business, but the experience was so inconvenient that Im inclined to just order music online.

If you want a good instrument, if you want to browse an amazing array of music for instruments or voice, go here. If you just play guitar and want pop stuff, probably not, simply because theres barely room to move and those things are available elsewhere. For me? First, especially at back to school weekends, this place is crowded. Kids everywhere getting their instruments as a new school year starts. However there is a reason why so many people go to Foxes, they are very reasonable in providing instruments, especially in supporting upgrades as one either switches instruments or grows into larger sizes. Be ready for what might feel disorganized chaos, as they are the place to go as you begin and continue the music journey. We recently upgraded to next level string viola, and they were extremely helpful in providing choices and time both in store and at home to test out instruments and make sure we ended up with a sound investment for us.

Over 40 years ago my mom rented a violin for me from Foxes music. The fact that the business is still around is a testament to the value it provides to the community. I love that it is not a chain and is a completely local business. While the buildings interior may not be modern and bright and spacious, it certainly does say we love music here. Instruments crowd every surface horizontal and vertical, and there is a room full of tables of sheet music. And Foxes has knowledgeable, professional, helpful musicians for staff who will try to match your child to the right instrument. For example, they did a great job of explaining the pros and cons of the various instruments when we were trying to decide whether to upgrade to an intermediate or professional level instrument -- a rather significant decision. When we rented a sax for my son, we just dropped in on a Saturday and Foxes was completely packed. It is a VERY popular place, and it did take a while (maybe 20 minutes) before someone was able to help us out and give him a few saxophones to try out. If you want more 1-1 attention and a private room to try out the instruments, go during the week. We went today (Thursday) and while there was a steady stream of customers, it was not the mob scene of Saturday.Highly recommend!

Worst experience was with one of the piano teachers here.We had scheduled to visit with the piano teacher. The school had all my daughters details (age, etc) and still told us to come for the visit. First, the teacher refused for us to see inside the piano studio. Why? Im still baffled. Then, he concluded in a few minutes of discussing with us (calling my wife aside to tell her) that my daughter apparently wasnt ready, despite the fact that I mentioned that shes already in a music school, has started playing and is now reading notes. It is absolutely fine to turn down a prospective student. However, the very least you would expect from a music school and its teachers is that, for a very interested kid (and parents), you try the kid out on the piano and see what the childs skill level is and then make an informed decision on this basis. Then explain, what the child needs to be doing before considering to take the child as a student. Apparently, for the esteemed teacher here, none of this appears to matter.

Foxes has a local monopoly on a couple things: school instrument rentals and sheet music. They also have a good selection of electric and acoustic guitars, and accessories for guitar/bass and band orchestra. The store is a total mess and at the busy season--fall, when kids are renting instruments--forget about service, or expect long waits at the register. The other day I went in there to buy a neck strap for a sax--we are already renting a sax for our daughter from Foxes--and I stood there at the counter for at least ten minutes while nobody offered to check me out or even spoke to me. There was one guy kind of floating around doing what looked to be nothing, and a guy I think may be the head honcho having a long, leisurely phone conversation, and two guys doing instrument rentals, but Im just standing there holding a twenty dollar bill and a sax strap. There were other people waiting around me and several of them wondered if I would ever get to buy the strap. I had time to call Guitar Center and ask if they had one--no luck. So I waited another five minutes and then just left. Hello, internet? Do you have a sax strap? Yes, you do!The store has a certain charm and they are the only game in town within a few miles, but Im done with them and well go elsewhere to rent a sax, or just buy one. If I need guitar or bass stuff--which I do, all the time--theres action music and guitar center, which dont go out of their way to demonstrate their indifference to your desire to give them money
