This is a beautiful building, the former Royal Exchange. I was nearly the only visitor during my visit and I struggled to find much to engage with, although I liked the works by Beryl Cook. Staff seemed a little bored and none were engaging with visitors. Its all a bit elitist, itd be nice to make it feel more accessible to those who arent art experts. I liked the effort though made in showing the history of the building and some early documents relating to the opening of the gallery.
Beautiful building that feels like a bit of a TARDIS (bigger on the inside than the outside) with some great history, some interesting exhibits but not much open with the current rona restrictions, lots of closed exhibits. Youd be lucky to stretch your visit out for over 30 minutes. Cant moan too much because its free but Id give it a miss until the restrictions ease.
From the moment I walked into the foyer with its fragmented wall mirrors, I knew I would enjoy this gallery. I walked through and loved the central circular area offering a view of the various floors and the ceiling above. Artwork by children hanging from the railings on the upper floors gave a delightful feel. After looking round, I visited the library in the basement where there is also a cafe, a great place to rest for a while.
Beautiful building museum, really well laid out. Good history & amazing art
Brilliant modern art gallery in a beautiful building. They have a big main changing exhibition and then a few more permanent ones upstairs which inventively show their interesting collection - I loved them and how the art was displayed in thought-provoking ways.
The statue with the cone outside is one of the best pieces of modern art Ive ever seen. Inside its pish.
A small gallery in comparison to the big ones like in London but I really liked that. The art pieces are very ineresting and I really enjoyed my time there.
Very interesting and enjoyed seeing work by famous people like Hockney and Warhol. It was a shame one of the galleries was closed for repairs when we visited but as its free entry we can return :-)
It was a shame that gallery 1 was closed but enjoyed it, I would only set aside an hour. Good Central location.
Its good to do some mindfulness by taking a look at something that you have no idea how to understand them.
Beautiful building but the exhibits were not my cup of tea
Lovely Museum. Great variety of art. Will definitely go back.
Nothing special. I think its okay considering that its free, but there isnt really much to see thats interesting. I was quite bored to be honest.
Fantastic exhibitions in an amazing space. Very welcoming staff, covid precautions top notch.
Like to go back when masks arent required. Over all, interesting.
Its a museum of modern art with no modern art.
The museum shop has some fun items and posters for £4, I bought the Tree of Life by Klimt. However, I did not quite get the modern art objects and videos in the main area because they were not linked according to a theme or idea. It is hard for visitors to interpret its message without any explanation or information. They have become random objects, some by pretentious artists. The library is quite extensive. Staff are friendly.
The gallery of modern art is a museum that you have to visit every couple of months because it keeps changing. The last time I was there a couple of years ago I didnt find anything that I liked but this time around I found quite a few exciting things. Like art about the suffragettes and a fantastic video of an Artist that does chain reactions art with fire. Its also a beautiful building with some great architecture on the outside so have a look round the outside and look up youll be amazed what you see. The staff is amiable and helpful. There is a fantastic gift shop that sells all sorts of artistic things and Gorgeous jewelry. I recommend just going into the gallery to look at the shop. Some disability things to mention they have a lift which gives you accesses to all the floors but because of its age its a bit temperamental be patient with it. Also, the accessible toilet which is in the basement of the building its not very big so getting larger wheelchairs in Might be a bit hard but the staff is more than willing to help. In the basement, there is a library and an adorable cafe that sells a vast range of lunch and snack things. The cafe also has a Macmillan corner where you can get help and advice with cancer.
I love modern art but did not enjoy the collection in this gallery. Very few paintings, not a lot to see.
Visited on 09 December 2018. I had forgotten to write down the tour times but the staff was very kind and accommodating. I got a free private tour! Great place to visit. A shining example of how something with a dark history can be used to improve the future even though it looks nothing like what it did.
Definitely something for people that are really into art. The exhibit I saw wasnt really for a casual visit but more for a very engaged viewer. The exhibits are very small but there is also a library and a cafe downstairs. The exhibit, to my knowing, was contemporary art not modern (in the technical sense). So if you are looking for modern artworks (1880s-1970s -ish) this is not the place.Admission is free of charge so if you are nearby you might as well pop in.The gift store is very nice and the entrance hall has a cool mirrored wall!
Hunners ae goths
Very nice collection of different artists
Glorious goma!
Lovely place to visit
Used to be good, but now its not really that amazing, like barely any paintings on the wall, just plain white walls, also got a bit of a NED problem around the area.
Small but nice. Although it was a bit emptish, I enjoyed seeing whats there. I very much enjoyed reading about the history of the building. I also liked the Domestic Bliss exhibition. The exhibitions make you think, despite the apparent emptiness of the space as in not being full of things, stuff. I personally enjoyed the space. Also, the staff was very nice and helpful. Plus its free.

My heart broken u remember me !
Nice exhibits, entrance is free of charge but donations in all currency are welcomed. They were much ahead of their times when they founded this place; theres also a nice little corner where you can just stop, sit and draw something (you can actually leave your drawing there for others to see).Inside the gift shop there are some lovely postcards with the Duke on it!
My heart broken u Remember me,,,,
Visited on October 18 and was delighted. Especially by the Inner City exhibition and the work of Mitch Miller; his inner city model and dialectograms were amazingly intricate and detailed. Some rooms are a bit poorly lit, true, but overall the work is very well curated. There is a lovely Create Space thats great for kids. Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable as well. And completely free admission!
Great place to visit. A shining example of how something with a dark history can be used to improve the future even though it looks nothing like what it did.
I hate this place
Just ok
I was expecting I would see more but that wasnt the case. I found everything I saw in here interesting though. I loved learning about the history of the place.
The gallery is located in the city centre and have the look with this large pillars.
One of Glasgows finest museums, if youre in to something a bit different.
A must visit for tourist in Glasgow especially to see the Duke of Wellington statue!
I love you Glasgow, you have the best art gallery in the world! Small but so smart and creative. 10/10
A nice library. A huge collection of books you can find over there ranging from different section across science, maths, art, music, physiology and others too mention. You have a ground floor cafeteria as well to keep you full any time you feel hungry. A little souvenir shop is there as well for quick shopping. It consist of 4 floors and mostly 2,3,4 floor you can sit down in peace and go through your books/interest.
Great
Horrid! Dont waste your time here. Youll find nicer looking things in a local dump! Printed out pieces of paper with put text from Microsoft word put in frames? The building should be used for better things.
Very empty, could be filled with so much more exciting things. Nothing interesting being shown except an Andy Warhol Campbells Tomato Soup art piece, and video footage of The Way Things Go 1987 art film by the Swiss artist duo Peter Fischli and David Weiss. Although it is free entry!
The Gallery of Modern Art is another amazing part of Glasgow city centres cultural activity and another amazingly free place to spend some time!I dont pretend to understand Modern Art but I do like to challenge myself and the gallery has many items to help visitors get to grips with the exhibitions. It also has a great wee gift shop, a well socked library and a cafe to relax in too.
I am writing this review based on my like and according to me it was not much I could imagine was impressive. May be it was not the place as per my taste. Also I have been at this place only once so I am not sure whether the exhibition keeps on changing as one of the information printed on the wall suggest so. However I have captured a few photos and the opening and closing hours for your reference. Please hit the like button if the review sounds helpful.
Art museums arent usually my sort of place but I did enjoy my visit here. In total, I think I spent a little over an hour within the gallery. Its certainly a good place to visit if you have a short amount of spare time to do something in Glasgow. The gallery has lots of different exhibits showing very different types of art. The staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the art. The building itself is also very interesting to look at.
Very nice building and good contemporary exhibitions of photographs. Some of the rooms seemed a little bit out of place (the world war exhibits for example). Free entrance, not too busy on a Thursday afternoon.
Amazing looking building. So many talented artists in Glasgow. And yes there is nothing in the art gallery few boring pictures which never changes been there so many times and its always same, nothing new. Gallery of modern Art 0%
Free, small but it is nice and cozy. Great place to visit on a rainy day. Please visit downstairs. They also have public toilets downstairs.

Great exhibitions and free entry
Gallery of Modern Art is a great place to visit if you happen to love Art. This gallery offers a programme of temporary exhibitions and workshops so each time you visit chances are there will be something new to see. It is in the middle of the city in the Royal Exchange Square. This gallery is well worth a visit.
Free. A small museum with a finger in most pies. A personal collection that reflects the interests of the collector, from the macabre human body bits to the beautiful gem collection. Lovely building.
While I didnt get a lot of the art in here, it was still a very nice place to visit. Any tourist to the area should check it out, though, for the statue of the Duke of Wellington out front and his fancy hat. Any questions you might have about the local Glasgow attitude to authority can be answered by simply observing it.
Hop in when you are nearby. The main gallery is worth a quick visit. Much smaller collection and less interesting then I thought. From here it is a 5 minute walk to the lighthouse. Youll probably want to spend more time here.
My daughter is into modern art. I really can see what she sees in it. Sorry but Im not into modern art.
Hi good afternoonThis is a professional drawing by The Queen Elizabeth IIMade in UK,By Gilberto Lima ArtistLooking to by in one good Museum...Thank youGilberto LimaBy Famous&Millionaires
I think its one of the best places to go to in Glasgow, try it out its free.😁😁
Sorry but its not my thing. Its was difficult to understand what its all about! Art is good. Modern art is OK. But this requires a slightly weird point of view. Sorry... Good film about things rolling into other things and making things happen... I think!
Only as good as the exhibits. great space and well used building. check the contents are to your taste at that time and enjoy your slice of inspiration.more great free art in glasgow
I just visited today after lunch and...from what I viewed in Galleries 2-3, I am aghast that this museum is even open. It is very disappointing and downright depressing. True, there wasnt a special exhibition mounted in Gallery 1. But the pieces exhibited in 2-3 were monochromatic, mostly photographs and a couple of multimedia installations. I love modern, abstract, expressionism in all its iterations (I own pieces) and from many periods, so I am not uninitiated. There is no connective tissue, no energy, no verve and no depth in this collection currently on display. I am, frankly, shocked and dismayed. Sorry, Glasgow, because the city is the exact opposite. The city crackles with energy and I was hoping to see a collection that reflects the citys vitality. What a shame. I hope something changes at this institution.
Interesting place
Firstly the building is fantastic - stunning in fact- also free admission. However the exhibitions were disappointing (July 2017) - 1 had nothing in it, another closed, what I saw didnt appear great. Although caution - I am no art critic so it may be that this is great artwork (but I doubt it). A video is shown of a documentary about bomb damage filmed on a smart phone, another has coloured papers with a twigs on top of them. Exhibition areas are spacious but why not just add more artwork to showcase more artists work?Worth a visit to look at the building - hopefully will be improved in future
