Picked up my serger from repair. Only $94!!!!They were so good. Kept to the timeline and the quoted price. They have tons of supplies, machines and advice.
Just dropped off my serger for repair. They were very friendly and also had the presser foot for my Singer. 2 weeks for my Husqvarna serger to come back. I can hardly wait.
Excellent staff, so friendly and helpful! I love the great selection of modern fabrics prints that they carry. They have offered a great deal for Black Friday which has saved me money.
Always superb and friendly service. They even bailed me out of a problem over the phone one year. They also have a good selection of accessories that are reasonably priced. Highly recommend.
Very clean and friendly shop! Lots of knowledge and different machines avalible. Tons of accessories and fabrics offers sewing classes! Super fast responses for any questions. Would highly recommend for any Sewer just starting off!Just love our husqvarna viking opal 690q we got from here and they have been very helpful along the way
I’ve always had great service here, but today was exceptional. I was trying to make some face masks for hospitals and my machine started acting funky. Called in and they said 10-14 days for a tune up. I brought it in and when he heard what I was making he sat down and fixed it right then!
This is, perhaps, my favorite quilt store. I enjoy the way the fabrics are organized, the sample quilts displayed, and the assistance given when I am creating a quilt. I drive 2 hrs to enjoy this shop. I look forward to taking a class someday. The classroom is very inviting.
Excellent fabric options and very helpful and knowledgeable employees!
I love this quilt store. The workers are so helpful and friendly!! The only place to buy a machine!!
I am pretty new to sewing, and as a male in sewing circles, I can sometimes be looked down upon or ignored at other quilt shops. Smith Owen is a breath of fresh air. Not only have I always received complete respect and amazing customer service there, I am always treated as one of their own when I walk in, without question that I am the one sewing and looking for fabric.Did I mention customer service? The talented craftspeople that work at Smith Owen are not focused on sales, but truly interested in ensuring you get the right fabric, needle, sewing machine, pin cushion, etc etc etc needed for your project, and they will bend over backwards to make sure that you are satisfied with what you are getting.I bought a great sewing machine there last year, and will continue to come in periodically to buy fabric. I took a class with Sherry and Lisa, and they were a ton of fun and I learned a lot from them!On top of everything, Smith Owen has great sales throughout the year, and their fabric is justly priced, (and did I mention their WIDE selection of fat quarters?) The quality of fabric, WOOF, go in and check it out and you will see.One more thing, Buffy. Go in on a day when Buffy is working and her energy and smile with BRIGHTEN you on even the cloudiest of days.Thank you Smith Owen for continuing to provide a great place for craftspeople in Grand Rapids to express their creativity!
Smith Owen is such a great shop! Not only do they know basically everything, (or at least it feels that way because I haven’t asked a question they couldn’t answer) but they also have THE👏BEST 👏CUSTOMER👏 SERVICE 👏 (Buffy I see you)!!!!!I am a modern southwest machine quilter and my brother hand quilts vintage-y civil war/1930’s reproduction style and we both find what we need!!I could go on and on about every single person who works there because when I go in they all know me by name and my preferences and make sure to tell me what is new that I might like. I evidently spend way too much money there, lol, but no regrets. Live your best quilting life and shop at Smith Owen!
The saleslady, my aunt Lisa, was really kind and helped me pick out beautiful fabric. I really like the fabric choices she helped me choose, and I would definitely recommend this store to any of my sewing friends. Thank you!
My bobbin stopped catching the thread so I took it in and they were able to get it up and going in under 10 minutes. (Apparently a screw was loose). Machine is running great now and I went to pay for the repair and they didnt charge me. Turns out it was the owner and he mentioned that he was glad it was a quick fix as there were 12 machines brought in for service that day and it would be a wait for me. Needless to say, if that is the care I get from a machine purchased elsewhere, I am now planning on getting my next machine here!
The best quilt store in all catagories and everyone is friendly and helpful
Tim was such a big help to me and my husband when trying to figure out something on our machine! The ladies are super sweet and helpful and we enjoy going there. You can tell the people there are always looking to help and are very caring. Thank you Smith Owen!!
What an excellent store! They are helpful, attentive, personal and truly are willing to go out of their way to help! I had machine issues, and as a seamstress during busy seasons there is panic! But came in and they helped me right away so I could stay on course! Fabulous products there as well!!! Love this place! Everyone should use it!
I attended the DIME presentation at Smith Owen last week. It was a very informative, enjoyable session. All of their products were available for purchase at a wonderful discount with additional incentives. The DIME rep was well educated and experienced with the products, did a great job answering all questions. Smith Owen is always a planned stop for me when we are in the GR area, wonderful shop with a staff that makes you feel that you are an invited guest to their store. I am looking forward to the premiere of the new Viking Embroidery machine this fall, and will definitely be making a purchase from Tim ;-)
Great customer service. Great products. I love my new Phaff Ambition Essential. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. I asked tons of questions and was given tones of answers. Tim listened to what I needed and directed me to the best machine for me. He didnt try to sell me more then what I needed. Loved my experience at Smith-Owen.
I LOVE THIS STORE!! so many nice people who are very helpful. I felt like I was one of the family! no pressure with so much variety. And classes! so many to choose from. Its clean and Tim was super helpful. I will never shop at another fabric store.
I attended the seminar about the Short-E on June 6th. Great seminar! So good, in fact, that I now own a Short-E! And I cant say enough good things about Ashley. Her presentation was very informative, well-organized, and provided sufficient time for questions and one-on-one discussions. The humor she injects into her presentation made for a fun time. And as always, the entire staff were friendly and helpful! I will be retiring at the end of the month and look forward to spending much more time at the store!
A very small encounter but one that will keep me coming back. I took my surger into Gall first only to have them not really look at the surger and tell me it just needs to be serviced. I was skeptical and unhappy with their attitudes. I went to Smith Owen and was greeted with with smiles. Then a gentleman I believe named Tim took a look at the fabric I sewed and my surger and said it could be something stuck in between the tension plates. He grabbed a pick and picked out a small thread. He I nvited me to test out my surger before I left. It worked perfectly! A truly customer centric service provider!
If you sew, quilt, or are interested in it. This is the place to go to. They have many popular brands of sewing machines at competitive prices, and plenty of good quality gear to get you started. And the staff, I have never had an issue with them. Everyone is friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful.
I was so pleased with the friendly service I received. As this was my first visit, I was personally shown around the store and was pointed to fabric that was thought to be my taste. I loved the selection of printed linens and Kaufman chambrays. Loved the samples of bags that were hung along the back wall- very inspirational! One addition I would enjoy seeing are a selection of knits for the garment sewists out there:)
Whenever I walk into the store, they all treat me like family. :)I love the personal attention I get when I shop at this family-owned business. When I have taken classes there, the teachers are not just helpful, but also make the classes fun. I dont know alot about sewing, but always feel like I leave knowing just a little bit more. :) Thanks Smith-Owen, for all your help.
This is a fantastic business. They repaired my 40 year old Viking so it runs like new (after numerous others told me it couldnt be fixed). I couldnt be happier. The cost was quite reasonable too. I highly recommend this store!
My daughter and I just brought in her sewing machine, as we thought it was likely broken. I wasnt sure where to go to have it serviced since Im not a sewer. After asking around, I decided to go here based on a recommendation. Im so glad I did! They were very friendly and helpful. What I assumed was going to result in a repair and sizable bill, instead amounted to nothing more than finding out she had been using thread that was too heavy and no bill at all. What a great shop, and we look forward to utilizing and supporting this store in the future!
The Dime seminar about the Short E and other products to make creating easier was well organized, both the part done by the presenter and the registration, snacks, and set up by Smith-Owen. The price was very resonable for 4 hours of information.I especially liked hearing about so many products at one time and how they fit together. I find it frustrating to buy one product only to find out it only works if I have something else. The demos by Ashley showed how products could be used alone or with another product. Good info. While I didnt make a purchase that day (too many projects to finish first) I walked away with lots of information and ideas.
Always have a very positive experience at Smith Owen. Everyone there is very helpful and polite. I never need to go anywhere else again for all my sewing needs. Thanks Tim and Smith Owen team. You are the best.
I went to Smith-Owen because I had heard good things about it, but I was very disappointed with my experience. I took my sewing machine in because of some broken gears, and when I went to pick it up, the staff barely even acknowledged my presence. I wanted to ask questions about it but no one paid any attention to me except to take my money. I got the machine home and it didnt even turn on. I called immediately and the person who answered the phone was very unhelpful. I brought it back and apparently there was a part not put back on correctly, so I waited while the technician fixed the part. While I was waiting, the other staff once again barely acknowledged me. I got the machine home and it still will not turn on. I will not give this place my business again because was treated rudely and my sewing machine is now completely unusable.
Tim spent a long time demonstrating various sewing machines and Lynn was so helpful and supportive as I finalized my sewing machine purchase decision! They were both very forthright, very much appreciated!
The workers are all friendly, enthusiastic, kind, and knowledgeable about the products they have available, and it clearly shows that theyre more concerned with getting you what is right for you than with selling you more than you need.Repairs and machine tune ups are done well. This is the place to go if your sewing machine isnt working like they should be, whether its a new $15,000 machine, or your grandmas that hasnt been used in 20+ years. They have sewing project classes for all ages and experience levels, as well as free classes for when you buy a new machine, so you can learn all the features.
I wanted to take the time to express my very positive experience at Smith-Owen Sewing Center today. I have the Viking Topaz 20 with embroidery module. Due to my own carelessness, I broke part of it off. Now, I live in Austin now but purchased my machine back in 2009 when I lived in Grand Rapids. I called all the Viking dealers in town to see if anyone could help me fix it. Did I mention that my main source of income around the holidays is custom stockings with personalization? I was quoted $100 for labor and $2 for the part and three weeks to a month of it being out. :-( I knew I was going back home to GR so, on a whim, I decided to give S.O. a call. Oh, that is such an easy fix! Just bring it in when youre in town. I packed the module up in my suitcase and flew up to Michigan. Sure enough, they fixed it in 15 minutes and only charged $31! Holla! ^_^ So happy! Now I can get back to work!
This was my first time at Smith and owen. The service and friendliness of the staff was impeccable. I will definitely be back and recommend Smith and owen to all my friends.
Thanks Tim for repairing my vintage Viking 21e. Tim knows his vintage machines and he cares about his customers. It was well worth my 2 hour drive. Highly recommended!
Welcoming store for me as a beginner. Tim and Kathy showed me the ropes on the sewing machine and were very friendly. I will be going there for any future needs.
Thank you Tim at Smith Owen Sewing for excellent service. I had to drive 1 1/2 hours for assistance to install 5D software update for my Pfaff sewing machine. Tim agreed to stay later than his normal schedule to meet me and two of my sisters. Tim assisted us with 5D update installs. Each of us had a different situation where we needed Tims assistance. He patiently and cheerfly helped each of us. He was professional and helpful. I have drove up on several other occasions and Tim has always gone out of his way to make sure that my software worked correctly and answered all of my questions. The ladies that work at Smith Owen always go out of their way to assist me. I have a closer location that I can go to, however I would rather drive further and get my questions answered quickly and accurately. I highly recommend shopping at this family owned business.
Smith Owen’s knowledgeable staff makes every project fun. They always go above and beyond to help you with your projects.
A very helpful and friendly place. I have bought 2 Pfaff machines from them, a Ambition 1.5 and a Serger. I love both of them and the classes that were included with my machines were wonderful. I have bought machine from other places and have not gotten the information that I needed. Smith Owen took these useless machines on trade in and gave me credit towards my new machine. Tim is a great guy and I will return to his store for all my sewing needs.
So friendly and helpful! The repair guys had the old needle plate I needed and the ladies were super helpful and enthusiastic about us learning.
Christian practices? Wow, not hardly. I went in to buy a sewing machine. The holier than thou woman who waited on me (after trying to pawn me off on someone else) showed me a $200 sewing machine, and immediately said, Oh, you probably cant afford this. Well, Ms. Oozing with politeness, I went a few doors down to your competitor and bought a $200 machine. If you want to be treated like trash, go here. If you want respect and honesty, go a few doors down to Gall Sewing and Vac Centers.
I came in to figure out a problem I was having with a PFAFF serger that was given to me. Tim worked with me and replaced the part that was broken. He also made sure I knew how to thread and oil the machine properly. The service was great and I would absolutely go back!
The service department at Smith Owen is an absolute gem. I went in trying to find a replacement needle set screw for my old Pfaff serger and the man made me one while I waited because one couldnt be ordered! :)
Within the last two years I bought an embroidery machine and a portable sewing machine--both Pfaff products. The embroidery machine had a few glitches--one my fault and other that required a little adjustment. The service was prompt and friendly (even when it was my fault!). Love, Love my machines. In addition, every sales person greets everyone with a smile and enthusiasm. All create a knowledable, happy, and nurturiing environment where all are welcomed. Come and enjoy yourself!
Awesome customer service!! Great fabric - fun place! Love it!
Wonderful staff and great classes!
Best quilt shop in town!
They fixed my machine while I waited, showed me how to fix it myself next time and charged me nothing.
