I did not get work done by the company, but I do find it important that I review and let anybody know that if you are part of the LGBTQIA community.... this company will not be friendly towards you.

The pictures say it all. We had a very bad experience and, unfortunately, cannot recommend James Coy or Kustom Detail. Mr. Coy was doing work in front of our office building putting down sod and offered to seed areas of the front lawn, apply sod to one area and then slit-seed the back yard for $400 total. He said he would do the work that day and wanted payment the same day (should have been the first red flag). A check was left for him at our front desk...and as soon as the owner left the office (and after only seeding and minor sod work in the front yard were done), he came in and asked for the check even though he was not supposed to get it until all of the work was done. He left and never came back to do the back yard.Furthermore, the seed he put down never came up (only weeds) and the sod he put down was dead when he installed it (a piece he said was left over from a job he was doing for someone else on Seminary St.). When we complained, he came back to put a new piece of sod where the old dead one had been...this new piece was half dead but eventually died completely. After a couple of months had gone by with no resolution and no work started in the back yard, we asked for the money to be returned because the back yard wasnt started and the front yard results were worse than when he started. The first time, he ignored the request. The second time, he became defensive and angry saying we had been his only unhappy customer and it was our fault his work had turned out poorly. He accused us of not watering the lawn properly and killing the grass with pre-emergent (both untrue). He said he didnt want to refund any of the money because he was coming back later in the fall to seed the back yard. When he was told not to come back and just return the money minus the cost of the grass seed he used, he became angry and behaved in a surprisingly unprofessional manner that we hadn’t experienced with other contractors.He said he would only refund $200 because he believed that was what the back yard work was worth (even though he said the slit-seeding was the bigger job at the beginning). He did send a refund check for $200 through the mail, but this was unsatisfactory since the job was not completed and the results were poor and he didnt stand behind his work. It was a disappointing experience and we later learned we were not his only dissatisfied customer or the first customer he had gotten angry with. Additionally, the sod he installed for the City in front of our building has almost entirely died even though the City workers watered it daily for at least 3 weeks. Mr. Coy fertilized it with handfuls of unevenly-spread granule fertilizer the day he installed it, which caused some of the grass to turn brown and die within the first couple of weeks and then those burned spots just kept growing as the sod continued to die. The pictures with this review show the sod in front of the office between the curb and the sidewalk (paid for by the City), the sod installed along our fence, and the areas where seed was put down, but only weeds emerged, which were the results we got for $200 paid and time spent arguing with Mr. Coy. We now have to have this work completely done over. It was a disappointing experience and we wish we could report differently.

We felt like James Coy did outstanding work on bringing our yard back to life. Definitely would recommend him!

James completed my landscaping job from start to finish at the Best Western PLUS in Brazil, IN. He and his crew were able to finish the job professionally, on time and on budget. He personally takes care of the job site and makes sure everything is done right the first time. I would recommend Kustom Detail to anyone who is in need of landscaping, lawn care and snow removal. It definitely helps to be able to rely on one person for all 3 of those needs.
