$5 admission, good for 2 consecutive days. Free parking in the corner parking lot. Plan on 1 hour absolute minimum - not stopping to read anything; just walking and looking - or 6+ hours if youre a reader. It is huge! Its layed out like IKEA (making the most of the space). Presently a local historic breweries exhibit, large permanent Charlie Russell exhibit, huge Montana history section (4 hours youre a reader), upstairs is a blond buffalo and a small military museum. All the displays are organized and well-presented.

Got there about an hour before closing and the gentleman at the entrance desk was kind enough to let us take a quick tour of the museum and gallery with no entrance fee. Was great to learn about Montana history dating back to the dinosaurs to the mid-20th century. Also really enjoyed the idealized paintings of Charles Russell.

Definitely one of the best museums Ive been to. Down in Colorado we pay $30 per person on tickets for museums HALF the size of this one! Bring your kids, theyll love it!

I wasnt sure what to expect- in Montana, you never know what might be considered a museum! But there is lots of information about Native culture, the mining rush, how agriculture developed and also how womens roles in Montana were very different historically from the east and west coast. Tickets are only $5 and if you ride Last Chance Train Tour, you get a BOGO coupon for admission. And while I was there, they had a very interesting exhibit on Beer!

Really neat little museum. Also, the gift shop has some jewelry that is very specific to Helena and so e semi-precious stones that are specific to Montana. I couldnt find any of these stones at the other gift shops in this area. Also, excellent customer service at the gift shop.

My husband, Elmo Wyatt, and I visited in 2010. He used to live in Helena in the 1960s and worked at the Studebaker place at OK Tire Company. We looked up addresses of the places he used to know, then went out and found the apartment where he used to live, as well as the address of the old Tire company that is no longer there. It meant so much to visit the places where hed made so many memories. Thank you for providing such a wonderful place. Faye Wyatt

Unfortunately I didnt have time to see anything in the museum on this visit (other than the white buffalo), since I only visited the archives. I cant say enough about how WONDERFUL everyone was. I was helped immediately, and by someone who obviously enjoyed her job and wasnt just going through the motions. While waiting for the records to be retrieved, I was shown other things of interest. Another visitor was doing some genealogical research and she had a lot of questions (and was given a lot of assistance), yet I was left alone to read through what theyd brought me. Check on-line first since they have a great way to search the collection, but when you want to look at something, definitely visit since they will go out of their way to help you find what you need. Thank you!!
