Wonderful shop. Houston Wine Merchant is one of my favorite things about living in Houston.The employees are exceptionally knowledgeable and friendly. Their recommendations are stellar and I always get gifts for wine enthusiasts from here because having experts help you along the way is a huge value add. Allison has helped me pick out a couple great Spanish bottles for my grandfathers birthday and Antonio introduced me to Burgundys. I love that I learn something new every time that I stop by.The shop itself is very well organized, well kept, and has great inventory. You can be confident that you will find something special here.Overall, the best shop with the best people.

I can quite assure you that this wine shop was the most beautiful winery of all! Just like a collection of wines, the atmosphere is magical. We loved sitting here and watching the world go by, drinking wine. I advise you to spend some time in this place. Its all great. We are definitely going to come back!

This is undisputedly, THE BEST place for wine, hands down. Whether youre a seasoned connoisseur or a wondering spirit, do not fail to visit this place. The biggest factor in which I rate a place is on the staffs recommendations. They have never failed to deliver! I can walk in and ask for a $20 or a $100 bottle and get a smile with every sip. Some wine people can be snobby and condescending when speaking wine, not them. We will definitely continue to visit

Houston Wine Merchant is easily my favorite place to buy wine. The staff is extremely knowledgeable of their offerings and how they can tailor them to the needs of their customers. I was able to go to them during the pandemic shutdown, tell them what i was cooking for dinner, and get recommendations based on my wildly eclectic tastes. Kudos to the staff for keeping great times rolling.

Weird place. First of all they dont let the customers inside, not even in hazmat suit. But the weirdest part, they do not accept the money as a payment. Given they barely have any customers and take only plastic it raises legitimate questions. For example, why are they even open? How do they pay rent, salaries, and utilities? Feels like money laundering facility. There are plenty of stores giving cash discounts. My suggestion, if youd be passing by, just pass by, do not waste your time parking. Unless youre from IRS.

Houston Wine Merchant is a special, special place and as Houstonians we ought to be proud its here. Pre-pandemic I would love going inside of the store and looking at all of the beautifully displayed bottles of wine they have. The employees, in particular Cyrus, are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. One of the things I love best about them is that they will not lie to you and tell you they have tried a particular wine you are interested in if they havent... and that has led to Cyrus pointing me to some pretty amazing gems they sell (sorry but Ill have to keep these to myself lol).Antonio, is the manager and one of the buyers for the company, and is definitely a great choice if you need any opinions on wine. Hes very personable and knowledgeable. If you are a novice like me its okay.. youll still be treated with respect. The employees here genuinely love their job.To the poster who gave HWM a negative review because of the pandemic.. really!? Are you kidding me?! They have been nothing but safe. You do realize if a staff member gets sick it not only affects the livelihood of that person and everyone working there but the business will have to shut down right? Lets be respectful and thankful that they are not crowding people inside of their store. We need to patronize businesses like this who do the right thing.Go to Houston Wine Merchant.. now. If youre coming here, you know your wine or at least have a taste for higher end wines. The people working here know their wines and if you give them a little guidance they will point you to something in your price range and that hits every button your looking for. Cyrus was excellent at helping me pick out a variety of large format and standard format wines that could age a variety of lengths (up to 25 years) and Ill definitely be back.

Great local wine store. They cant match the selection of Specs but what I have come to really appreciate about this store is that the wines they do have are carefully chosen and very enjoyable. They do gravitate towards higher end wines so your selection is limited for sub $20 daily drinkers. However the ones they do have are great.

The folks who work here are great, AND they keep track of your purchases, so it’s really easy to refer back to make sure you get/avoid the same thing, and improve future recommendations. They work with great importers and have a wonderful selection!

Houston Wine Merchant is tucked away in a strip center on the very busy Shepherd street. You can miss it if you arent careful since the traffic is always pretty bad over there.There are few spaces in front but you can turn on the side street next to it you can find the additional parking in back. It has a nice vibe when you walk in, nice had bright and cool tones. They have packed very possible space with wine! It does make it difficult to move around at times, but everything is so nicely displayed it doesnt matter. They also have a small spirit section so it definitely is trying to be your one stop spot.One thing I really like is there twice weekly wine tastings as well as their monthly selections. The tasting are usually quick sampling sometimes with the a representative of the wine featured or one of the staff. They are always cleverly featured in their newsletter so you learn a bit about what you will be tasting. They also have a monthly wine feature with two options: regular everyday wine (offering of 6) and if you buy a case with two of each you get them for 20%, they also have a premium offering each month too. We’ve compared them a few times its maybe 15 to 20% more than the regular offerings. We have yet to get a case, but may during the holidays. I like thats its no obligation. We have yet to walk away from any of their tastings with less than two bottles. I will say that in most cases its anywhere from a couple dollars to 10% more than Specs. That being said they offered a few wines that Specs does not already carry.The staff, for the most part, is friendly and knowledgeable and Houston Wine Merchant is on our wine rotation.

Very knowledgeable staff. Good place to go if you actually know wines. I have been to a lot of vineyards in the US so I know wine pretty well. I read some of the other reviews and somewhat understand where they are coming from but this wine place does have an excellent selection and if you know what you are looking for the staff can point you in the right direction very quickly.

Their website inventory/availability is not updated. What’s the point of having an outdated website?...Besides, customer service has lots of room for improvement.

Great selection and the owners are very knowledgeable. My wife and I went in for some port for a Christmas gift and walked out with 2 bottles of wine and a nice port as well. I wish more places were like this. I would pay more to shop here over Specs any day of the week!

I needed to get some Pinot Noir for the owner of my company. The manager there was great and helped me pick a few other bottles outside of a hard to find one that I researched. Overall it was a great experience and a great wine shop.

I’ve been here a few times and the woman who usually helps me has been teaching me about wines because I’m getting interested in learning about them. I recently went and two gentlemen where there. I asked about some wines and I had some questions. They were both so impatient with me and they kind of made fun at the fact that I asked about some wines they no longer carry. Very rude and disrespectful. I felt discouraged, judged and discriminated because I don’t look like I’m a wine drinker or an elegant person. What they don’t know is that when I’m not working I’m a T-shirt and shorts kind of guy.

When they ask you if you need help dont brush them off. They have immense knowledge on everything and will guide you to something new and fantastic. Or just what youre looking for...

This is the place to go for small production, artisan crafted wines in the Houston area. Houston Wine Merchant has no peer locally. The staff are all experts in their respective areas, and they have access to wines other liquor and wine stores dont(either by choice, or availability). THE place to shop for a special bottle of wine.

Superb high end wine shop with a deep, carefully selected offering spanning the globe, organized by region and price, the Houston equivalent of Californias K&L. Many curious and unusual bottles on these shelves, very suited for wine exploration. Markup is a bit higher than what Im used to (bottles I usually buy at $20 were around $25 here) but this is the price of curation. Staff were quite friendly and knowledgable, a must for a shop with so many unfamiliar labels. Also noteworthy was the small collection of exotic herbal bitters, including several American amari and fernet bottles I had never seen before. I stopped here to pick up one good bottle for dinner while on a business trip and found myself longing to check my baggage so I could take a few more home.
