I have been wanting to go to this place since last March! What a hidden gem for hand made African Drums and specialty instruments! They are works of Art hand crafted with fine wood and skins for a variety of amazing sounds. It is a true experience just to visit and tour this family owned and operated business in the heart of Inglewood. They are hands on, helpful and extremely kind. I high recommend to experience and purchase. They also support a local had made mask maker so I picked one up as well

Thanks Dan for bringing my dad’s old Congo back to life with new. This drum traveled from Cuba to California to most recently Michigan. It’s final destination home, Michigan will play at some amazing venues. Remembering that you had a hand in it.You are gracious kind and professional and we see the love in your craft with every instrument you are repairing. Your calling to the world drumming has gifted you to present some beautifully made drums from Africa and other parts of the world. It was a true blessing to have met you. We hope that you will continue this lost art through drum circles and drum performances.

I had a most unusual drum - it looked like a 4 section of a coconut tree trunk with a head on top. The head was split so the drum was useless. After finding Motherland, I sent the tree trunk to them and they did an absolutely beautiful job refinishing it and crafting a new head for it. Warning: it wasnt exactly cheap and they took a long time to do the job, but it came out beautifully and had a drum sound to it for the first time. I highly recommend them for unusual drum repairs and restoration.

Ask for London .He was amazing to me. The vibe there makes it nothing short of a Los Angeles treasure. Beautiful instruments hand crafted drums not only from West Africa, but north Africa,South America as well with batas and gorgeous wooden cajons and the best sounding djembes anywhere. I found beautiful Calabash there which play daily. For a truly memorable experience, visit Motherland. Great music and truly great people.

Motherland Music is the best. The vast selection of high quality, authentic to the region, beautiful, and perfectly tuned drums is amazing. There are so many quality bells, as well as a vast array of musical paraphernalia. If you love to play African drums, this is the top store in California and most likely the West Coast. It’s like walking into a dream candy shop for candy lovers. To add to the mix, Dan Rice is such a pleasure to do business with. The knowledge he embodies is refreshing and legit. He is so kind, patient, and helpful with questions and the decision making and purchasing process from start to finish.MOTHERLAND MUSIC FOR LIFE!

It was my first time coming here, I came for a drum day camp for my daughter. Its easily missed if your driving down the street but once you get inside it doesnt seem that small. They have drum classes, they make drums there, and they have jam sessions! Even though the activity was for my daughter I couldnt help but to think that I would love to come back and take a few classes and be a part of a jam session😀

I flew to Motherland Music from Salt Lake city, in order to pick out some handmade instruments. I had no idea what an incredible trip it would be. From the moment I walked into the shop I could feel that something special happens there. I’m so grateful I had an opportunity to experience a small piece of it, I took Malik’s djembe class, I joined a celebration for Kwanzaa, and met so many incredible people who gather at Motherland. What they have created is very unique, and it is a gift to the community.I’m so grateful for the time Dan, London and Diyoji spent helping me, answering questions and giving suggestions. Diyoji spent the entire morning on Sunday while the shop was empty helping me and answering all my questions. Those guys are so great.I also really appreciate their quality craftsmanship and fair prices. I think the beautiful rope tuned congas I bought, are as fine a conga drum that anyone could find across the globe. Absolutely beautiful look and sound.I’m so glad I found you guys. I know where I will be buying all my drums from now on! I look forward to coming there again, next time I’m in California.

Motherland Music is a terrific resource for African hand drums and percussion instruments. The owner and his staff have deep knowledge of the African musical tradition. The inventory is large, and the prices are reasonable. Before you buy a mass-market djembe or drum of any kind, check out the alternatives at Motherland Music.Youll discover many fine djembes, but also traditional drums from a several African cultures: bourgarabous, adowa, breketes, congas, kpanlogos, ewes, djun-djuns, batas, udus, etc. All manner of shakers and rattles (mbiras, axatses, maracas, caxixis, and shekeres) as well as thumb pianos, bells, gongs, and flutes.Chances are, youll find something youll love, either for yourself, or as the best possible gift for the drummer or percussionist in your life.I purchased my bourgarabou drum from Motherland about two years ago -- its one of the very best-sounding drums in my collection. When its time to bring your instrument back to its former splendor with a new skin, or to repair damage, the service department is excellent. The also offer weekly drumming classes. When in Los Angeles (Culver City, actually), make it a point to visit Motherland Music.
