I had a great experience at Pullman Bar & Grill! The food was great and the service was just as good. I recommend the Kitchen Fries, they are delicious! I called ahead and they got me right in on a Friday evening. Overall the service was very prompt and prices were fair. The restaurant is also in a fun area. I recommend giving them a try!
My favorite breakfast, brunch, and lunch place in downtown Iowa City. It is a tiny place, but the food is worth it. When the weather is good, the option of sitting outside makes it even better. A little sad to see my personal favorite (Avo Toast) removed from the menu, but at least they still serve the pancakes which I like when wanting something sweet. Staff are always very friendly here, and they fixed mistakes with my order in a timely manner on the tare occasion that happens.Update:Tried some new dishes from the Sat & Sun Brunch menu…Smoked Salmon Croissant and the Breakfast Bowl. Both dishes were very flavorful and a change from the routine brunch dishes at most places.
Couldnt speak highly enough of Pullmans! The cocktail menu is one of the best Ive seen in the Iowa City downtown, if not the best! They have great burgers and other sandwiches and can also accommodate a vegetarian or vegan diet. The staff is super friendly and will make you feel like friends or family. I love the atmosphere which is based on the iconic Pullman dining car. I had heard good things before trying and my high expectations were met in every way. Will definitely be returning!
What a unique and fun place! They have very interesting cocktails, good beer selection and the food has as many interesting choices as the drinks. Their service was top notch and they communicated very well. I had salmon and my wife had the chicken sandwich. Everyone else in our group loved what they ordered as well. The atmosphere is unique and feels like you are in a train car, hence the name. I highly recommend that you spend some time here at least once. You will not regret it. Great job Pullman!
Fresh french pressed coffee served table side. Fried chicken breading had a nice crunch with decent flavor. French onion soup had a lovely sweet taste. Great place if the night before you got a bit carried away, but far from a greasy spoon. Very kind and knowledgeable staff.
Tried the croque madame as it was recently voted the best breakfast sandwich in Iowa according to the waiter. I was surprised I didnt get anything extra (it being a breakfast sandwich, hash browns or some other side), but the price was good for what I received and Im not surprised it will the award -- it was excellent.
Had brunch on the patio! Started with fresh squeezed orange juice that was absolutely perfect, sweet and tangy. My husband had the corned beef hash that was full of Irish flavor and cooked just right. I had the simple breakfast (dont let the name fool you it was filling) with over easy eggs and sesame toast along with a banana with walnut pancake. The service was attentive (filled water glasses quickly, checked in often) and friendly (she was smiling the entire time! ). Well definitely stop in again when were back in town! Also the aperol sun was a nice twist on a mimosa
For Iowa city, this is five stars. Food is good, excepting the croque madame, and i especially enjoy the bananas foster. Take out is also good.
This is the one and only place I need to eat at when I visit my daughter in Iowa city. I consider it an upscale diner. Need to go on Fridays for their ramen. The flavors of pork belly are mouth watering. I get hungry just thinking of this place. The drink specials (old Fashion) are what they need to be. Strong ! Drinks are not watered down with mixers. You can taste the alcohol. The service is good and the kitchen and staff run like a well oiled machine. Love this place.
I have been here several times and always enjoy it! Had a nice relaxing lunch on the patio. I had a good cocktail and the mo burger which is always delicious and filling.
I have eaten here several times and have never ordered something I didnt like. The chicken fried steak burrito is amazing and will leave you in an absolute food coma. Make sure you order a mimosa as they squeeze their juice fresh and you can certainly taste the difference. I will be back as soon as possible.
Brunch menu and service was absolutely incredible. Cocktails, biscuits and gravy (w/ fried chicken obviously) were some of the best Ive ever had. Three star review because my wife and I were eating with no less than 10 flies in the booth with us and they were EVERYWHERE in the restaurant. It was bad enough to really be a distraction during and after the meal; constantly waving off pests so I could eat. Fix the fly issue and its easily 5 stars
This is it. Exactly what you want from the Iowa City food scene. I recommend this place to everyone I meet and I always tell them to order the spectacular (and secret) Sage of Six Paths. And always order a six pack for the kitchen - they have an incredible team and they always are very passionate and appreciative. It’s SO GOOD!
Had high hopes after reading reviews but certainly not in agreement. I had Double Pancakes which were leathery on outside and definitely below average. Didnt even finish them. BTW they hid a smaller pancake under the larger top one. My wifes scrambled eggs were ones you could get anywhere. Not a fan.
I love Pullmans. The mo burger is, in my opinion, the best burger ever created. Same with the kitchen fries, saw them on a review, and that did not disappoint.
Great diner! Had some amazing biscuits and gravy!
Hands down THE best burger in iowa. absolutely blown away by the fried chicken. service is incredible and the staff hustles so hard it’s outstanding. fell in love with the food and the staff.
Tried if for the first time. High quality food and great service. They dont have employee shortage. Nice job management
I should have written this review a long time ago, but Pullman Bar & Diner is my husband and Is favorite restaurant in Iowa City (and honestly favorite anywhere for that matter). Every meal I have had is amazing, burgers, chicken, breakfast, sandwiches, asian dishes, it is all excellent. I really appreciate the time and effort their staff puts into curating such a great menu with local ingredients. I also love their cocktails, by far some of the best drinks I have ever had with quality ingredients. And the staff and servers are phenomenal, they make sure to take care of you quickly, always get the order right, and are so nice. All around an excellent restaurant that is always worth the wait!
Location is amazing. The inside is well decorated. It was uncomfortably hot though due to the heat outside as well as i think the grill and appliances that were on. Food overall was good. The steak and eggs I got were good except they didnt need to sprinkle more salt on top of the steak, made it more salty, it didnt need it. The steak was also still extremely chewy and hard to eat even though it was medium rare. Overall, I will still come back and bring other family and friends but will probably try something different as I was a bit disappointed with the steak and eggs.
Their hot wings is on a different level. I highly recommend it! Great workers too:)
Very nice place. Small and noisy . Great food.Outdoor seating a plus. Can’t remember anyplace that has better friendly service .
BRUNCH REVIEWPullman is the kind of place you want to come for breakfast/brunch/lunch when your family is in town or when you want something a bit more upscale than Perkins.Pullman is an exposed-brick lined diner in the heart of Iowa City that does upscale diner food, from a simple breakfast to classics with a twist (my mom got fried chicken with miso grits and kimchi).WAIT:The four of us came for brunch around 1 PM on the day of Iowa graduation and were pleasantly surprised to only have to wait 15 minutes...we would have expected a place like this to have a 30-60 minute wait.FOOD:I was between the chicken my mom ordered above and the spicy chicken sandwich and I always defer to the waiter who insisted I get the chicken sandwich. It was lightly battered but still juicy. It was made spicy by a Louisiana hot sauce but not too spicy. The fries are definitely worth getting as well.I also wanted something sweet so I asked the waitress what was the most popular of the cinnamon roll, coffee cake, and pancakes. Coffee cake was the winner but was disappointed that it actually tasted like coffee, and Im not a coffee fan. Im used to coffee cake tasting like cinnamon but this was new to me. It was perfectly well-cooked and moist but tasted like coffee. Be warned those who want coffee cake...this one tastes like coffee.
Amazing breakfast, wish we could have gone for lunch or dinner too!! The avocado toast was really good, came with a nice side salad for a very filling meal for $7! I also got the coffee cake, it was very different from any coffee cake Ive had but it was delicious! It also came with an interesting coffee butter, really worked well with the coffee cake. If Im ever back in Iowa City I will definitely go back to try more things!!!
Visited for the first time last weekend. The breakfast tacos were absolutely phenomenal! I’d recommend everyone try them sometime. The “award winning” Bloody Mary was just “ok” in my opinion. But I’d order another my next visit. Overall it was a great meal and our waitress was friendly, we sat at the outdoor seating and it was perfect. Edit: I forgot to mention one thing that stood out to me, as a lover of eggs I couldn’t help but notice every dish that came by me had perfectly cooked eggs, my friend ordered sunny side up and anyone that has eaten breakfast at many restaurants knows that normally you’re getting undercooked eggs brought to you. These were perfect…..shout out to the cooks. 🙌🏻
I tried the soupe à loignon à la française. It was okay, just not as good as my own honestly and about 1/5 as complex. But what can you expect from a fast-paced crowded diner versus a half hour slow simmer in the kitchen homemade. It tasted a smidge too caramelized... If that makes any sense... I would have made it more rich with green herbs parmesan worcestershire vinegar sugar garlic pepper etc etc. I paired it with a clock-fighter draft (ipa?) which was decent (though would have gone better with a dark wine). Enfin la fin de soirre was an unplanned Rosemary Gin Fizz. The mixologist was just so impressive, despite her modesty, I had to try something special made. It was a tasty gin drink with a shot of protein (egg) to end the night. The Rosemary sprig was a delicate touch, but if I was home i might have tinctured some in somehow to get more palate and less nose. Sorry for sounding pedantic, it was worth the trip. Ill try an actual meal and different drinks next time.
Didnt live up to the hype. Slow service. Appetizer took over 30 minutes. Fried chicken on salad was too salty.
Decent sandwich and fries was 18+.me and my wife came to $72 plus tip is to much for a lunch break at a sandwich shop,my double burger on the Frisco was tiny didnt even fit the bread my wife single was bigger then my double.Maybe you have to get a loan to eat hereStaff very friendly but not so speedy kept playing on their phones instead of helping customers.
Called ahead to reserve seating for 5 on fathers day. Arrived at the stated time and were told we would be seated once a large table in front of us was available. Waited an additional 15 minutes and after the table became available the host seated another large group at the table he said would be ours. The reason was because they waited longer than we did. Whats the purpose of reserving a table if it is going to be first come first serve. We drove an hour to have a meal with our daughters who attend the university. We altered our plans and were seated at Mickeys ordering when the host called to tell me we could come back. No thank you, and I will not be back.
Tight but somehow cozy atmosphere and the food is prepared in an open kitchen where you can see the work and standards going in. Wait was a bit long but food really impressed. Its simple enough, but extremely well executed. Would recommend, would return
Cozy place with unique items. Drinks a little pricey.
The food was amazing! Great staff as well, plus my server was another Henry which is always good to see!
We are from Illinois and we wanted a quick road trip and to discover some great spots. Pullman was FANTASTIC as far as food, drinks AND SERVICE goes. Our server Riley was wonderful and such a pleasure to be around. She was witty, funny, friendly and attentive. HOWEVER, she was not in your face or missing at any point. She offered recommendations and knowledge on the items we asked about. We would for sure, go back! Thanks for the great time! We bought 2 souvenir coffee mugs because we had such a great time. Delicious food!
My girlfriends and I really enjoyed our experience here! Great service and food. My bestie from Indiana has been wanting to come back just for the fries! 😆 Her words: Best french fries Ive ever had.
Brunch or dinner, Pullman Bar & Diner is my favorite restaurant in Iowa City. It could be the incredible food and fantastic cocktails, or the vibe with both modern & classic decor and the big painting of Lydia the tattooed lady with 90s & early 2000s alt rock playing in the background. Going out to eat has never felt more at home!
Super tasty. Split the steak sandwich, patty melt and I believe it was a Turkey club. All were great but the steak sandwich was my favorite. Also had a Witch Slap hazy which was fantastic.
Wow! Excellent service and great food! We will definitely return as the Pullman was a wonderful spot :)
Wow, just wow. But only if you like sensational food, superb service and a great, casual college town feel. The brunch menu, kicking off with mimosas or french75s, will get your day off to one bodacious start. Do it - this place is awesome.
Kind of difficult to find, I walked right past it at first. Nice place in downtown Iowa City. You can get up close and personal with the crew, felt the heat of the flames as they were cooking. Staff was friendly, and the service was very good. I had the chicken sandwich (spicy.) It was good but not very spicy. The only real knock on the place was the fries that I got with my order were warm at best. I would definitely go back, would give myself more time and have an adult beverage also would like to try the corned beef hash.
Friendly staff, good atmosphere, good drinks, interesting menu, bone marrow is a must order.
I love the cocktails a d the customer service is always really good. I have yet to try their Ramen but Im looking forward to it
Pullmans is always great, particularly for brunch. The breakfast tacos are lovely and my whole family loved the pullman burger.Service is just as speedy on the patio as it is inside. Theres often a wait on weekends, but you can just bop across the street to The Shop to burn that time!
This was the best Bloody Mary Ive ever had. House made mix with the standard vegies, an excellent celery salt mix on the rim of the glass, and a strip of bacon to top it off. The breakfast tacos were great too. Nice atmosphere and and friendly service. This place makes a good reason travel to Iowa City, if for no other reason than to get some breakfast 😋
Sit at the bar and enjoy the show. Try any of the gin drinks and anything on the menu its all fantastic!
Great little gem Im Marion. If you havent been there yet, you need to go.
Wow this is a great spot. Came here once for community hour - before I had thought their prices were a little high and was thus hesitant to come. But wow! Got a beer, a croque madame, charcuterie plate - all at a very reasonable price (came out under $30) - good selection of options. Will be back to try their nicer dinner menu items next time.
The service has always been fantastic. The food is incredible and at a reasonable price. This is by far one of my favorite brunch spots. The ONLY downside is the limited space inside.
My favorite place in Iowa City! The fried chicken was fantastic!
THE BEST BLOODY MARY I’VE EVER HAD! Packed with flavor & cuter than ever ! Highly recommend this place for all your brunching needs!
Double cheeseburger as it should be! Nice servers, hard working staff and a cool vibe.
Nice downtown atmosphere with street side dining. Great breakfast and morning cocktails!! Dont miss if in the Iowa City area!
Pullman never ceases to amaze for a date. If you want the best experience with your food, I highly suggest ordering an appetizer like the charcuterie board with whatever is suggested at the time, and a drink or two and sit at the end of the bar where the food is made. It makes for a really intimate experience waiting for the food while they cook it right in front of you. Steak and Frites was the first dinner I had in Iowa City and it hasnt changed one bit. Their sauce is completely homemade at the restaurant and they reduce in a pan with some butter before drizzling it over a nicely cut seared steak on a bed of fries. Pullman is an Iowa City must if youre trying to impress!
Loved their fried chicken. So flipping good!!!
Very little gluten free food
Thes BEST PLACE in Iowa cityBest costumer service, most delicious food for breakfast, lunch or dinner, Everyone in this restaurant is super friendly my favorite place to go.
While we were in town to watch Michigan play Iowa in field hockey we found this restaurant through reviews and thought we would give it a try. We are sooo glad we did, the food was off the charts, so many great things to choose from it was difficult to decide. All dishes were unique but not so fancy that our 16 year old wouldnt try them. He loved it so much he asked to go back when we are there again for Big Tens. Our visit was during the pandemic and all of the tables had dividers between them and all of the workers were wearing masks and using precautions to keep us all safe. During our visit the kitchen had a small fire that was quickly put out but the fire dept had to come and clear everything. The workers were fabulous, they were all very calm and asked us to head out for a few minutes while the fireman came in and made sure everything was ok. While we stood outside, the wait staff offered coffee to everyone and continued to check to make sure all of us were ok. When it was safe, the staff allowed us back in, got us our food quite quickly and then would NOT allow us to pay to matter how much we argued. This was the ultimate in customer service. The staff and management were incredible during the whole process. I am so glad we made it to this little gem and we will be visiting again this week.
Pullman is a great place. Amazing food with a great variety and lots of unique things on the menu! The atmosphere is also really cool. Honestly can never go wrong eating at Pullman!
Great service. Fun atmosphere. Good food
Found this place a few months ago and so glad we did...it’s absolutely amazing! The staff is super friendly and very helpful. They are excited when helping to explain menu items, or making drink selections. The food is out of this world, try anything as you won’t be disappointed. As for the drinks, don’t be afraid to try any of them. I’ve never had a drink with an egg white in it, but it added something incredible to the drink. It made it a bit creamy and lighter. Think if it as shaking the egg white in so that it almost becomes a bit of a meringue. The picture is the Rosemary Gin Fizz made with an egg white.
Im currently sitting at my kitchen island with a warmed up mug of leftover ramen broth from our Pullman order last night. Is it a healthy lunch choice? Probably not. Should I be admitting this to a bunch of strangers on the internet? Definitely not. This broth is better than it has any right to be. I would give up a toe to get even half of the recipe, but at the same time, I probably dont want to know how much salt I just consumed.
Loved the vibe of this place. We had avocado toast and it was so DELCIOUS! It was a nice change of pace for breakfast.
5 star food, service and atmosphere !
Its all good, been here several times and have never been disappointed. Only thing that could make it better would be fabric napkins, the paper stuff is cheap and falls apart.
I loved the refurbished chic industrial vibe of the place, our waitress was very attentive even with the place being packed on a Saturday, and the Mo burger was hands down the best burger Ive ever had, and I do not say that likely. Its pricey, but worth it. However, theyre baked goods, including the bun on the burger and our cinnamon roll but not including their fries, were dry and not great. I would recommend going here if youre looking for delicious comfort food.
We just ordered from there and all came up with the conclusion that it was the best burger any of us have ever had! Everything on it was just absolutely delicious and the fries were the real deal!
We ate dinner on the patio, and honestly it was kind of a weird experience. The service was fine, but not great. The food was good, but not good enough for me and my foodie hubby to want to go back. A little overpriced for the quality of the plates we got. I’m not sad we went once, but now I’ve tried it—and that’s enough for me.
Menu, in my opinion, was pretty limited. Food was so so, did not wow me and somewhat over priced. Very nostalgic place though. Tried it. Wasnt bad, just not for me. Wouldnt go out of my way to go back.
Little boojie but the brunch and coffee were top notch
Great breakfast and friendly service.
I just had the best corned beef hash ever.
The food is always absolutely stunning and delicious!
We had a great experience at Pullmans. We were on I-80 and were looking for something unique but tasty and filling. We saw reviews for Pullmans and came in and they had both outdoor and indoor seating. The space is long and thin and has plenty of booth seating, chairs and also a bar to sit up to. The feel inside is friendly, though probably not for children, due to the bar. I dont drink, but I noticed a wide selection of interesting drinks for those who do.The food came out quick and was good looking and delicious. I ordered the Mo Burger and it was really tasty, definitely would recommend. My dad ordered The Huevos off of the brunch menu. He is a foodie and as we walked out he mentioned that he would love to come back when we pass through again.Chase was a fantastic waiter and probably found my water bottle that I left on the table. Message me if you find it Chase.
My boyfriend and I recently ordered pickup here since our previous experiences here had been positive. However, this time the fries appeared and tasted like “bottom of the bag” fries; there were about five actual fries and the rest were crumbled and tiny overcooked pieces. We were also surprised by the poor quality of the burger buns. When we’ve eaten here in the past the buns tasted homemade, healthy, and artisanal. These, however, were the same cheap buns you might find at the grocery store in a pack of six. I don’t think we’ll be ordering from here again.
The tacos were amazing!
