Craving a bit of Caribbean food like Id normally eat back home in Boston, my sister and I stumbled across this spot in the google reviews. I am so happy we did. The employees were super helpful and kind to us as we ordered. I got the small stew chicken plate which gave a good portion of chicken, rice and peas, cabbage, and I added plantain. All were really enjoyable. I also ordered a beef patty with coco bread which didnt disappoint. all in all worth the trip. Cant wait to try something new next time!
I ordered off DoorDash. Let me say the flavor was there BUT the portion was completely off. For a $20 large oxtail plate I only received oxtails in the side portion of the box. The big part that’s typically for your main dish was filled with rice and beans. I can go to a soul food restaurant and pay $14 and get a plate full of oxtails.
I decided yesterday to try a different place to satisfy my taste buds! The jerk chicken and cabbage here was so delightful! The rice and peas were a tad bit mushy for my taste.
The steam snapper is broiled with thyme, garlic, okra, scotch bonnet pepper skin, scallions, and carrots. It is very delicious, and it is served with green bananas, sweet potato, and cornmeal dumpling. Also, the Ital veggie stew is a big HIT ; healthy and nutritious. The servers are down to earth, and the restaurant has a wide array of tropical fruit juices, and beverages. The restaurant also features an exceptional brunch, on Sundays, from 12 noon to 4:00pm, and if you want to find out what Escovitch fish, harmony porridge, jerk chicken, Jamaican oxtails, brown stew chicken, curry chicken, and curry mutton is like ... Stop by and check out all the other entrees and Caribbean desserts :) Check out on a Sunday and be the judge !!!!!!
Customer service was so horrible I had to leave a review. This was the 2nd time they did not complete what I asked for in the instructions I left. I order through DoorDash. The oxtails barley had meat, a lot of bone with fat. Definitely not worth $20. Called the location to let them know they did not complete my instructions, which was to put extra gravy on the side. They over saturated my rice with gravy, leaving the rice mushy & soggy. The oxtails barley had any meat, had a lot of bones and fat. The only thing she offered me was more rice on my next order. I told her I wanted to speak with the manager. The manager would not get on the phone, I could hear her in the background yelling very loud “she got her order didn’t she? I’m not refunding her!” Tell her to call DoorDash”. If it was not for DoorDash I still would not of heard of this place. I am never returning here. Customer service was horrible. I will spend my hard earned money somewhere it is appreciated.
My favorite is the curry chicken.. always delicious. Big portions so I always have some leftovers for the next day and that tastes even better.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!! I WAS IN HOUSTON LAST WEEK AND ORDERED FROM THIS PLACE, 2 DAYS IN A ROW😩I LOVE THEIR OXTAILS AND RICE. THE PLANTAIN IS SO GOOD!!!!!! DEFINITELY COMING BACK❤
Im not a big Jamaican food either but today I had a taste for some oxtailsRice and beansCabbage. They did not disappointThis will be my go-to from now
Definitely Jamaican style.. Sometimes a little too salty but when not, great food. Brown stew chicken fan but lots of other dishes to chose from.
Stopped in for the night headed home to Louisiana... Oh my Lord.. this is the real deal. The acki and saltfish .. the stewed chicken all go die for. Amazing. Authentic. Delicious. Only bad thing is they were out of plantains.. but thats a minor thing. Amazing .
Curry goat 9/10 - would have loved more spice.Brown stew chicken - 8/10 - would have loved a tinge of spice and sweet. Kids loved the food.Portion size 10/10Service was excellent! Will definitely be back to try the jetk chicken.
Wow, just had brown stew chicken from here. It was so aromatic and delicious!! Pricing is reasonable too; my large plate was about $10. Call-in your order for the most efficient service.
Jamaican jerk chicken is always really good. Very nice spice. The first time the wait was slow but the second time it was ready when I picked it up. 😁
First time trying this restaurant. It was a little bit of a wait for the food but the food was pretty good. My husband ordered the curry goat, and I ordered the oxtails. Both had good flavor, they were served with rice and peas and a cabbage mix. Will go back, want to try the jerk pork.
Curry chicken Tastes good. Reminds me of JAMAICA 🇯🇲
I read the good and the bad review. i said i do not think i will be the bad one.I decide to give a try. Experience was horrible: No, geeting ( hi how are you doing, welcome.....people do not understand i drove 1 hour plus to be to this place. Showing some appreciation to have chosen their restaurant, would have been wonderful. the food was horrible> My order: goat curry,96 percent of the meat was bones almost break my teeth, lettuce seem out of date. My wife order chicken sew same ordeal; lot of bones she was also very disappointed. I know most of Caribbean food, i want to have my wife experience it, instead to a delicacy it was horrible experience. I should have gone to Denys .red lobster or buckees at least they show you they appreciate your business .I do not eat much food to Buckees but you know why i stop there? the people make you feel unique ;always welcome, good ambiance. People do not understand the human relation is the more important part of the Business.
I hate to do this, and I rarely post reviews, but I don’t understand how you’ve maintained such high ratings. My order was via delivery. The oxtails were tough and had none of the savory blend of spices it should. Flavorless. Just salty. The rice was soft and mushy. Cabbage wilted. No gravy on the rice. No plantain. I was very disappointed and put it right in the trash. Not wasting my time again.
I really hate giving bad reviews but the two plates that Ive just purchased for me and my wife was not good at all. Maybe I caught them at a bad time or something because I checked the reviews before I arrived. Next time Ill just make that trip to Cool Runnings. The Jerk Sauce was good though.
Food really good! I got the small oxtail plate and small brown stew chicken plate. I ate both :) food was soooo good and fresh! I will be back!
After reading reviews thought Id give it a shot, wasnt impressed at all. It just seemed leftover for some odd reason. The rice and beans were not good at all and the jerk chicken was decent at best. Probably will give them another shot to try the oxtail, if disappointed after that its a wrap!
Great food! The curry shrimp is my favorite. I will definitely visit when I tavel back to Katy. 😋
Absolutely horrible customer service! Their are way better restaurants where you will at least be treated respect and handled by competent staff.
Hits a home run!I moved here from NY and was so happy when I found a authentic Jamaican restaurant in Texas. Better yet, it near where I live. This location is family owned. They are really sweet, warm, and welcoming.I tried their beef patty and it was so flaky, crusty, and just the right amount of spice. I thoroughly enjoyed it!It was so good that I even bought several more to share with my friends at dance practice :)Thank you Tropical Diner!
FIRE! Delicious ox tail and jerk chicken. The jerk sauce is delicious and the plaintains are just buttery sweet goodness.
For goat meat lovers this is the place.Try their curry goat beans and rice its delicious.
Wow wow, what can I say..! My boyfriend and I just moved to Texas not long ago from up north and I had been craving patties for at least 5-6 months now.We found Tropical Diner near us and we were blown away! We did delivery and the bag was still warm. The patties are delicious..the texture..the inside of the meats texture is soft and creamy. We were so happy we ordered for such a great spot.Cons: Not enough jerk sauce given! The container was too tiny for a large plate. It was sooo goood I was licking the top.
The food here is the by far the best in the city! The staff is very friendly and they get your order right.Highly recommended!
I just moved to Houston two months ago. My first Jamaican meal since I been in Houston and I got the jerk chicken plate with ox tail gravy on my rice and beans. I read the reviews online before I went and some talked about the chicken falling off then bone and mannnnn they wasn’t lying!!! This meal was delicious and inexpensive just as I read about. I got the larger so my sister could try when I got home and she can’t wait to come and get her own plate! Me and my family will definitely be back here often!!!
4.5 stars. Food is pretty good, well.priced and big portions. They get my order wrong probably 1 out of 5 times I order, hence half a star down
Rice and peas can be better.oxtail gravy was nasty but the jerk chicken is great.
I travel far and wide for curry goat and this was worth the 41minute trip. I live 5 minutes from Cool Runnings so you know its serious if im driving that far for it. Just wanted to try a new place and I was not disappointed. It was well seasoned to the bone, tender, right level of spicy (you could see pieces of pepper in there... Didnt look like scotch bonnet tho, maybe habanero, either way still nice) Good portion for the money. The rice and peas was delicious. Felt very close to home with it.
The food is amazing!!! My husband and I got married in Jamaica and the jerk chicken brings back beautiful memories. The wonderful woman at the counter was so nice. The prices are amazing for the large amount of food you get. Highly recommend!
Good food.
Absolutely the best food I have had in a long time. So glad I tried Tropical Diner!
I love tropical diner! My family and I eat here pretty often. Their food is always AMAZING!! I’m getting hungry just thinking about it.
Omg soooooo good! I had the jerk chicken and it just fell off the bone! Everything was delicious. Very sweet!
The service was great! The guy that helped me was really informative and helpful! The food was awesome! Loved the Jerk Chicken and the sides I got. The drink they revommended (Sorrel) was a great new twist! Try the place, youll enjoy it!
One of the few good authentic spot . Great food
First time my husband and I tried Jamaican food and it was delicious very authentic rice white rice and rice with bean and all types of food curry chicken jerk chicken was great very inexpensive it fed a family of 5 she alcarte it so we can just make our own dishes very good service was good I appreciate yalls hospitality thankyou for allowing us to come in and dine with yall
Their Jerk Chicken is the best and the portion is fantastic.
This place is amazing! The food is very good (100% authentic) and the people there are friendly. My family and I eat here a lot... there Sunday Brunch is AMAZING too!!! You will NOT be disappointed.
Starting off the New Year with no meat, and I truly enjoyed the veggie plate! The food was HOT and delicious! I also had a bowl of chicken soup, removed the meat, which fresh and very tasty. The owner Yvonne is super nice and accommodating. If youre looking for authentic Jamaican yard cooking this is the place.
Yvonne was very nice. The buffet was delicious. I loved the curry chicken, red beans. Im definitely going back. This Jamaican restaurant is authentic and pleasant.
The menu and service were ahead of our expectations. We really loved the atmosphere of this restaurant. Amazing restaurant to take the family out for lunch.
The food tasted a bit stale and cold. I have been looking for a Jamaican restaurant since I moved here from NY. With all the great reviews and the location is not too far me, I decided to place an order. But it wasnt all that I expected it to be. I dont know if the meals were prepared in the early hours of the day. But it just didnt tasted freshly prepared, the jerk chicken was covered with bbq sauce couldnt really taste the jerk spices on it. Overall subpar flavor.
Love this place! Ms. Yvonne is such a sweet lady and she makes some great food. When we dont feel like cooking ox tails, dumplings and stew chicken. This is our go to place on a regular. Reminds us of going to our families for a gathering. Plus they make fresh soursop and they meat patties are a must.
My mom and I went here for lunch. I’m new to Katy so I was excited to see a Jamaican restaurant in Katy. I ordered Oxtails and rice and peas. My mom ordered stew Fish with rice and peas. The food presentation look amazing, but our food lacked seasoning and spices. The plantain was cooked perfectly. I won’t return.
The food was so so so good. My kids were licking their fingers and all. We ordered the Jerk, brown stew and stew beef. I live in NJ and visited TX and I have not had any Jamaican food that taste as good as what I ate today!! Customer service was so on point.
Always love this place. That Stew Beef, love it. Great customer service, fresh food, home made style. 👍🏿
Love this place! The food is island food at its best! Everything is always fresh and seasoned to the bone.
Great food! We were excited to try something else besides pizza, Mexican, and burger places. Jamaican food is amazing! The owners are very welcoming and the food was ready in under 15 minutes. Went on a Monday right at opening time and the place was nice and quiet.
I had the Sunday buffet yesterday (I was there at noon right when it opened). I have never tried Jamaican food, and was very impressed. The food was all very good, the stewed chicken was particularly amazing. The Jerked Chicken was also fantastic. The Ginger Beer (non alcoholic) is a must-try. It really went perfect with the meal, and was very tasty.Great price, amazing food. Absolutely must go back.
Great food. Curry tripe is delicious. Stew cowfoot is yummy. Personable staff. Check out the buffet. Excellent way to try different selections.
I have been here many times and keep coming back time and again. We love the Sunday buffet! Best porridge ever! Edit: This was actually written a week before we actually came back to Houston this past weekend and visited on Sunday (3-1-15) and really received horrible treatment and what felt like racism. The lady, who I assume is the owner is always super sweet and kind, but I guess a family member was running the show this Sunday and she was very rude to us simply for asking if there would be any more porridge put out on the buffet, because that is our favorite part and there was only enough for us each to have a small spoonful. She literally rolled her eyes at my friend. Last week we had asked the owner if she had Coco bread and she said no but she would save us some for when we came back last Sunday. When we asked about the Coco bread this new lady quickly said no then turned to an older gentleman (who is typically very talkative with us, this time said not a word, acted like he hadnt seen us before). She whispered something under her breath to him and then said OK we have a few pieces. My friend then asked for some beef patties to go and my friend just requested the frozen patties since we were travelling back to Austin with them anyhow and the lady rudely exclaimed Well you havent got any choice! When I left I felt almost heartbroken because all of us didnt feel welcome like we had before. Im still leaving my rating at 5 stars because the other lady is so nice to us and we still like the food, we just wish we could rely on there being enough porridge to go around at the Sunday brunch. I truly think they are nice people but the lady there running the show on Sunday (3-1-15) just isnt someone I can describe as pleasant to deal with. We brought in 7 people at $14 a pop plus tip they made over $100 on us, you would think she appreciates that, I know the owner does every time we come in and she tells us that and doesnt give us attitude or ugly looks.
Amazing food!! I was visiting Houston for 16 days. Got food there at least 8 times out of those 16 days. Daniel was very friendly and professional. You cant go wrong with the oxtail!
Friendly service and good food.Nothing to right home about but it was tasty.I wouldnt go out of my way but I would stop by if I was in the area.
Delicious Jamaican standard fare. Vegetarian and vegan options. The plentiful lunch buffet included tilapia, beef, and chicken. It was $8.99 for the weekday buffet. Service was amiable. I will definitely eat here again and recommend to friends.
Great food and great prices. The curry chicken is phenomenal!
Incredible to say the least! Went here with my friends that never had Jamaican food before. We all went crazy about it. Amazing food and amazing staff. 5 stars for sure.
Love the lunch buffet. Management is extremely nice. Food is pretty good. Could definitely use more thyme and scotch bonnet peppers in their dishes.
This was my first visit. I found the food to be very flavorful and the portions were generous. I want to try the oxtails put they were not able for another hour. I will return to try them. I did try the curry chicken and the brown chicken both were great along with the roti bread. Location is in a shopping center so look very carefully are you will miss it.
First time trying Jamaican food and this restaurant did a very good job of introducing us to the cuisine. What I assume was the owner took the time to show us all of the food that they served and explained to us what it was and what it tasted like. I went with my girlfriend and we ended up having the (large portion) jerked chicken, curry chicken, beef, plantains, rice, stewed vegetables, and some of their Jamaican sodas and it was all very tasty! And the owner was nice enough to give us a free desert at the end of our meal. When Im back in Houston I will definitely visit this place again!
If i could leave less than 1 star i definitely would. When we entered the restaurant, the man at the front acted like he didnt give a damn about us. It was our first time there so we were asking questions, but he barely replied and kept asking us to look at the menu... service: 0 stars. To the food, i got the ox tail, for $16 the food had no flavor whatsoever, my sister go jerk chicken and that barely had any flavor as well. We usually go to a caribbean place near us and the flavor of the jerk chicken is way better there. I hope this is not what all Jamaican food tastes like but i will definitely not be back
Good food and attentive service
Exceptional staff, I’m from the Caribbean and this reminded me of home 🏡 Would recommend to anyone In HoustonP.S curry chicken gives you a run for your money 💯👏🏾
So good every time. My family fights over the meat patties. The jerk chicken is legit. Katy Jewel!
Good food. I recommend the jerk pork . There seems to be a little bit of a consistency in portions and the plantain sometimes is left off, even when you remind them. They have a buffet on Sundays and they serve patties, which are always hot.
The food was delicious!!! I had the brown stew snapper and it was superb👌🏽My first time and diffidently not my last.
My food was excellent! Service was quick. Ill be coming again
Love the food and it is nice inside. Price is great.
Delicious and authentic Jamaican cuisine! The customer service is always excellent. Staff are all very friendly and welcoming!
The lunch buffet and Sunday brunch are both wonderful.
Great place to eat, friendly staff very good Jamaican food
The buffet is amazing and the porridge omg! Im still having sweet dreams about this delicious experience me and my daughter had here!
The food is always great!
Great jerk chicken, savory beef stew, flavorful beans and rice. Everything is made fresh. This is the place if you want authentic carribean cooking. Ive added it to my list of usual lunch locations now.
Hospitality is really good, food isnt what I was expecting. 5 star for service. Overall 4
This is the second time Ive been here. I wanted to give this place an honest second chance but I was also disappointed the second time. The oxtail did have much flavor to it & the beef patty made me sick. If you are looking for tasty jamaican food that has flavor & is tender this is not the place for you. Im Jamaican so I know what good Jamaican food taste like. Unfortunately I wont be back.
I ordered from here for the first time & I tried the Oxtail & Jerk chicken plate. Oxtails was ok but the Jerk chicken was dry as hell I will never order from here again. If you want some authentic carribian food please order from Cool Runnings. 💯
The absolute best Jamaican food in Texas! Yeah Mon! Reeeel Yard Mon Food! Reeeeeespek! 🇯🇲
Soup wasnt like the nice rich yellow jamaican soup at all need more food in it as well
The curry shrimp with rice n peas was excellent
It was great the food there was so good 👌
I eat at the Tropical Diner at least once a week. The jerk chicken and ox tails are always awesome. The staff is like family. Authentic jamaican food and atmosphere.

Ok I hate to give this place a bad review because I have been eating it for years. But the last few times we have gotten it, the cabbage has been different, the oxtails have been hard, and it all has been SPICY! IS there someone new cooking? I dont know, but I think I wont return again☹
Authentic cuisine is very good, very nice place to dine in, and they care about what they are offering.
So gooooooood
The food was excellent and the staff was very friendly and the prices were very reasonable I will be going back for more
Ending the day with full bellies. Tried a new to us Jamaican restaurant! Great food, kids actually ate and leftovers will be lunch tomorrow!
Best Jamaican food in town. Not watered down like golden crust.
