I feel that after about a year of working for this company I can make reasonably sound analysis of this company and how it operates and make it known to anyone looking into employment for Advanced Power Technologies in Lafayette, IN. This company has the absolute most toxic work environments I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing in my lifetime. The breakdown isn’t at the workshop level but rather at the relationship between the office managers/engineers and the workshop technicians and craftsmen. It is a relationship that can only be described as that of lords and peasants. Often times workshop personnel will be expected to work overtime and weekends with little to no notice, often stretching weeks into the 70-80 hours per week range, and frequently forthree to four weeks at a time. But work often slows to a mind numbingly slow pace after that leaving you to push brooms and sort bolts for several weeks making you wonder why exactly you had to rush the last two or three weeks. Additionally, many office personnel treat workshoppersonnel as second class people, incompetent of doing anything beyond drooling on the floor and wiping it up with a rag later. You will be expected to accomplish a job with little to no direct training at all, and then mocked and berated for when you fail to complete that job to the standard the company strives for.The retention rate for workers is incredibly low, with only one out of the ten or so workshop personnel having been there for more than three years at the time of my employment termination, and half of them having been there for less than a year. There is also a constant feeling of “you’re lucky to have this job” or “you’re overpaid for your job” that permeates the air through offhand comments made by management, leaving you constantly fearing that your pay may be cut or your employment may be terminated at the snap of a finger. Additionally, you will be told in order to gain employment you must sign a document saying you will not discuss your wages to other employees, a clear violation of the National Labor Relations Act.Also, your safety at this job is a secondary, if not tertiary concern for the company. Dozens of high voltage or high current electrical incidents or hazards occurred during my time there, including at least one high current arcing incident. No regular safety training is given at all, even on high risk equipment such as forklifts and angle grinders. If and when an incident occurs, the primary concern is always in regards to the product’s safety, not the worker’s safety. Again, you’ll be berated for not knowing better when never given proper training of any sort beforehand. The owner of the company is incredibly stingy and has little to no concern with keeping low level people around for the long term, but rather burning them up and then getting rid of them when they do burn out. One person was fired at the end of the day with no prior warning or notice in regards to their lack of performance. The owner also seems to play favorites with workers, and it shows especially during times for bonuses, with bonuses being different by nearly a factor of 10 for workers that had been with the company for the same amount of time. Also, do not expect a raise at all except after having been there for a year without any sort of movement to management regardless of skill level and competency. At the end of the day, potential new employees and graduating students, I would not recommend this job to you after taking all of the above into consideration. There is no potential for vertical movement within the company, the expectations are high with the payout being low, and the general atmosphere of the company itself is incredibly toxic.
