Wouldnt recommend this place. Owner was a know it all douche. Acted like he knew everything about all water sports. Recommend going a couple more blocks down the street to Thalia surf shop! Less expensive and very nice people!
Unbelievable boards, great staff and the best shaper in So Cal! Rod, Cam and the crew are great, got my first 3 boards from Rod and could not be happier, great service and mentoring! Just got the new Hoover Board totally cool, it goes everywhere with me! Best in Laguna!
We came there for the second time after 2014, where we had our very first surfing lessons with Cameron. This time we booked a 3day surfing lesson with Rod and it was great for my 12year old son and myself.Rod was extremely careful to my son, who was a bit afraid of the waves in the beginning. Also the fact, that I crashed one of his boards, was no big thing for Rod.Finally he sold on of his own used boards for a very reasonable price to my son, who is now addicted to surfing - in Laguna - what is a really challenge to do it regulary, when you are living in Germany. Thanks Rod, for that great experience - we hope to come back very soon. And your board will get a special place of honour in our house.
Dont go here unless you like being treated like dirt. I live nearby and have family come stay all the time. I took a group in to grab some rentals for a few hours and the older guy (I think the owner) was not helpful and was super rude. We were so turned off we walked out and rented elsewhere. Never done that before but Ive also never been treated so poorly before. There are plenty of great surf shops around Laguna. Go somewhere else.
There are about six surf shops in town, however Casa Azul is hands down the best! I highly recommend this shop, especially if you want to rent or buy a stand up Paddle board..
Same experience as most other people... terrible customer service. Also, after reading the other reviews it seems like most of the good reviews are fake....My family and I come to California ever year on vacation and we always rent surfboards. This was our first time here and Ive never been treated so poorly while trying to give someone my business. The oder guy helping us seemed to irritated that we wanted to rent surfboards... if you dont like renting surfboards, dont. Maybe he was having a bad day, but after reading other reviews I think hes just a jerk.
Owner of the shop was the rudest guy Ive met while in Laguna. He attempted to charge me $100 to use a board for two hours before sunset. Not to mention his creepy staring at my gf the entire miserable time. The guy must not like $ because I was looking to buy a new board. Avoid like the plague!!!!
Wish I had read the reviews prior to going to this shop; I too had a horrible experience. I would advise you to go to any other shop in Laguna but this one...From the minute I walked into Costa Azul I felt profiled for being a solo female surfer/traveler. It was my last day in California and I was very enthusiastic and keen on getting out in the water on a board (I would have paid good money!). The man working stated that he rents out longboards, SUPs, and skimboards (and showed me the rental boards), but wont rent them to you. He repeatedly said I am a liability. Furthermore, he followed me out into the parking lot and made me feel uncomfortable and awful about even inquiring about rentals. He didnt ask, but I am an intermediate surfer, and have experience on both SUP and skimboards. I am confident in the water to not damage the boards, the waves were small and gentle that day, and besides... isnt that why rental shops require a credit card on file? If you dont have any trust in people renting your boards, DONT BE IN THE BUSINESS OF RENTING BOARDS!!!
Knows his stuff Rod.. A true Watermen...Oldschool Laguna...
Took SUP lesson with Cam, it was amazing! Would highly recommend.
My sister and I went into Costa Azul for some post xmas shopping and I have never seen a nasty shop owner like Rod. He treated my sister and I like he was doing us a favor by selling us overpriced bathing suits and sunglasses. I dont know how this guy stays in business. I watched this guy be rude to customers in his store as well as to my sister and me. Its like hes an ornery scrooge that is PMSing in the worst way. Even his employees seemed scared of him and were no where to be found when Rod was being nasty to the customer inquiring about a surfboard. Because of this we couldnt even inquire about some of the higher shelved items that we couldnt reach and once we got to the cash register, we didnt want to. Needless to say, we took our things back and went to a kinder store down the road.I do not recommend
Never, never, patronize this place! Rod Greenup is a psychopath. He called me a liar, yelled at me in front of my family and made my children cry. I cannot understand how he has stayed in business for 20 years and can only implore others to go to any surf shop in town besides this one. Going to Costa Azul is a great way to ruin your trip to SoCal.
This shop is awful - dont go! The owner, Rod, was rude from the get-go when I entered his shop. I asked for advice on what to rent and he basically said they were all the same. I had a horrible experience with my rental - and a guy on the beach told me it was terrible and offered to let me use his. Suddenly, I started getting up and riding waves over and over. When I got back to the shop, I told the owner my experience with the board and he seriously couldnt care less. Ive talked to others since then and this guy is known for being a jerk. Im just a tourist but dont do business with humans like this!
This place sucks ... Super expensive and the customer service was horrible.
