Over the course of two months, Cassie Tuminello single handedly redeemed the healthcare profession in my grandmama’s eyes. We have been to countless specialists. Oncologist, orthopedist, ophthalmologist, dentist, dermatologist, use your imagination, add an ‘ist, and we’ve been in that office. When it came time to suffer through the miseries of yet another appointment, Grandmama (Marie McClain) was less than eager. This attitude completely changed after one visit with Cassie. Cassie is a breath of fresh air in the stagnant waiting room of professionals. “I feel like I’ve known her forever! I sure liked talking with her, she’s fun,” was Grandmama’s first impression, and it only got better from there. A lot of healthcare workers these days are sadly very disconnected from their patient population; they breeze in and out of the room, barely even giving a glance to the person in front of them. Our experience could not have been more different. The first thing I immediately appreciated was that Cassie was loud. Not foghorn loud, but a volume that was chipper and enthusiastic. Secondly, her personality immediately put everyone in the room at ease; her smile was contagious and her empathy was evident. Finally, she was determined, devoted, and persistent. She spent many hours working with my Grandmama and never seemed rushed. When you are with her, YOU are the priority for however long it takes.
