Oh my word. I dont even know how to praise this well enough. Every vegan donut I had was something to write home about. Were here in Los Angeles for a week and I will be going at least two more times after such an awesome experience. Its hard to pick a favorite, but Ill probably say the Strawberries and Creme is tied with the Royal Dragon for first place, in my mind.
I came here on a Friday morning. Two stars because the service was good and the staff was friendly. However, these donuts taste like sugar and absolutely no flavor. Theyre nice to look at but the glaze, which is supposed to be flavored, didnt taste like the flavors at all. I got a strawberry icing donut and it tasted nothing like strawberry, just sugar. I also got a matcha & rose donut... again, tasted nothing like matcha & rose, just a regular vanilla icing donut.
I love donuts so I always try to stop by any donut place that is offering flavors and techniques that are outside of the normal offerings at a pink box donut place (which I love as well). For my Donatsu experience I wanted to try their Japanese flavors but Im not an ube fan (I should really get over that taste aversion) so I had a black sesame donut and a matcha donut. Both were tasty and matched the flavors they were going for quite well, especially the matcha.I also had the creme Brule donut which was amazing and had the great cracked sugar topping.
Legit some of the tastiest and snazziest vegan donuts Ive ever had. My gf and I stumbled across this place by chance when we were exploring Ca this summer. We are both fully vegan, so when they told us that they only sold vegan donuts, my gf and I flipped and ordered a ton! The yeasted donuts are all amazing and we recommend.
It was a delicious trip. If youre craving a donut this place is banging. I highly recommend the Black Sesame. The butterfly lemonade was good but WAY too sweet and doesnt really look like the cool picture they put on the menu. Despite that the Boba was great and they even had nitro cold brew. Perfect summer stop in Little Tokyo. I cant give it 5 stars though bc the rest of the donuts were kinda bland for how much we were paying.
I was in the mood for an Ube dessert. Ube is mad delicious and since I rarely eat donuts, they were todays prey for my stomach.I ordered the UBE, Black Sesame, Royal Dragon and Matcha + Rose donuts.I didnt plan on any other donuts, but curiosity killed the cat.The Ube and Matcha + Rose were surprisingly my favorite. Ive NEVER had Matcha before. Its hella hyped and I see why. It has a nice balance of a strong and sweet flavor. Its pretty tasty and I would get it again. The Ube was ovbi delicious every bite of the way and the crunchy toppings perfected the donut even more. The Black Sesame wasnt for me. Bitter and too-sesamy for my liking. The Royal Dragon also didnt give me a wow-factor. It tasted like a regular-smegular donut that I let my uncle finish. And he enjoyed it.Not a big donut fan, but glad I tried this place and would for sure come back for you: Ube and Machata ;)
Donatsu is pretty famous for their amazing and unique flavors. The dragon fruit donut looks beautiful and tastes delicate and divine. The matcha donut is rich, although watch out, it is quite caffeinated. And the black sesame donut is probably my favorite. But the thing I think most people dont appreciate is how good the donut itself is. Perfectly cooked with a fluffy center... It reminds me of the middle of a good French bread. I could eat the naked donut itself and still have a great snack.
Me and my husband have been on a donut kick lately so we’ve been trying out donut places around LA. I wanted to try donatsu for a while because a) I love little Tokyo, and b) I love matcha flavored things and wanted to try out the matcha donut. I got the matcha and rose donut and the ube. Very yummy and not overwhelmingly sugary like most donuts in other places. They are also vegan which is good. Coffee was good too. Cups where black and napkins where also black which is an aesthetic that I like.
I wanted to give this place 5-stars but they were definitely just worth 4-stars.I was excited to try these donuts because of all the hype and their Instagram pics make them look really good. They were much smaller than expected (I was expecting a general sized donut) and most all the donuts were basically the exact same flavor just dipped in a different flavor glaze. So the glaze is what differentiates them in theory, but each glaze flavor was so non-existent that I feel if I ate them all with my eyes closed, I would think I just ate all the same flavor donut - vanilla with vanilla glaze. Sorry I really wanted to love you :( thank you for being vegan at least!
By some estimates 1600+ Donut shops across California are owned by Cambodian families, and at Dōnatsu in Little Tokyo Jenny and Nite Ban put their own unique spin on an entirely Vegan collection of fried Dough with fluffy textures and unique Toppings that fit the eatery’s name and neighborhood.Opened in January 2019, and since gathering a dedicated following in Little Tokyo, it is immediately on entry that Dōnatsu differentiates itself from the pack, the dark and shiny interior feeling upscale yet secretive despite its placement directly across from DTLA’s popular Japanese Village Plaza.Offering both classic and creative options, prices from $3.00 to $4.25 including ideas such as the flower-topped “Magic Dragon” and pink-sprinkled “Homer,” it is using the Japanese word for Donut that Dōnatsu makes every batch from scratch on-site, the focus on photogenicity expected though textures also set a high standard.Entrenched in a competitive market, though perhaps less-so downtown than elsewhere in LA, being different definitely benefits Dōnatsu in the case of their Black Sesame frosted ring, a savory quality tinged with Sugar playing well off light and fluffy Dough while a traditional Apple Fritter also performs beautifully thanks to plenty of Fruit and Glaze that crackles to the tooth.Passing on Ube, Samoa and Crème Brûlée, a lack of capacity the only real reason, Dōnatsu’s filled Donuts take on two forms, the first exemplified by Sugar-dusted Churros filled with Dulce de Leche Cream and the other a sliced specimen called Mocha Latte with sweetened Chocolate and Cocoa Nibs juxtaposing bitter Coffee.
They force you to wear a mask and dont accept cash for payment and are rude about there flavors, the drinks are good but thats defeated by the service
Says they will be back at 2. But they are almost 40 mins past due. Poor management and ownership, food born illness and bad taste? Hope a new store comes and replaces then soon. Then some walks from the back inside and over to a coach, sits down and ignores another women trying to knock.Saturday at 2pm on 1/23. Whoever you have working should be fired. I am never coming back.
Hate to write a negative review but I’ve been here 3 times and 2 out of the 3 there’s been a “will return” sign at the door. Overall, big disappointment and I can’t say I’ll plan to give them another try.The first time I was able to make a purchase and the donuts were great. Unique flavors, you could really taste the freshness of the ingredients.Unfortunately, I’ve come back two more times since then, during their open hours, and both times since, doors are locked with a sign at the door. The times that they decide to close down appear to be totally arbitrary and also long - the sign was set for over 30 minutes from the time I arrived. If it was 10 or 15 minutes I wouldn’t min waiting around but I can’t sit around or 30 minutes just for a donut, especially with other great options in the area.
Tucked away from all the bustle of Little Tokyo is a tiny little gem. Donuts!Vegan donuts to be precise. Stumbled in after a recommendation from the lovely ladies at Sweat Yoga, what better way to start the day with yummy, pretty donuts? The matcha, ube, dragonfruit were my favorites- but honestly you can’t go wrong with donuts and plus- they’re vegan!Do it.
This place makes the best doughnuts I have EVER tasted. The strawberries & cream and creme brulee doughnuts.. oh my word... The matcha doughnut is like nothing youve ever experienced. The doughnuts are a little more pricey than your typical shop, but there is a reason for it, and it is worth every penny.
I came here because of all the good reviews, but was met with disappointment. The donuts here are okay. Whats attractive is that they have unique flavors and varieties that have some Japanese flare, like matcha and ube. I ordered the matcha pistachio rose and sesame, and both tasted mediocre. The presentation definitely looks attractive and tasty, but taste is just okay. Maybe it would taste better if its fresh out of the kitchen, but the donuts I got were cold and the dough wasnt really any different than any regular donut shop. We came after lunch time and they tasted like they were sitting there for quite some time. The matcha glaze and sesame glaze were sweet, but the flavors werent strong, overpowered by just sugar. The sweetness had a bit of the artificial sweetner after taste (Truvia or Splenda) as well. For $4-$5 a piece, I expected a lot more but the taste was underwhelming and not worth the price.
Great donuts. Parking in Little Tokyo is hard to find.
Very happy with the place!
My favorite vegan donut place in DTLA! I love their strawberries and cream and churro donut! The staff is so friendly and they always remember people that come in!It takes an immense amount of strength not to eat there everyday!
As out-of-towners looking for something different and amazing in Little Tokyo, this was it. We got 12 of the 14 different donuts and they are all so good and unique! The donuts themselves were shockingly light and fluffy, and all the icing flavors felt really authentic and didnt have any artificialness. We also got the matcha strawberry and butterfly pea lemonade, which were great. Were only in town for two days, and its hard not to have FOMO in a city with so many good options, but you will not regret this place.
Amazing donuts and great Matcha tea. The great thing is that I don’t feel full or greasy after eating these. I tried the matcha rose and vanilla. Highly recommend this place.
It’s good stuff. An upgrade from your regular donut and the flavors are definitely a step ahead from the masses. A little on the pricy side imo and no deal on boxes unfortunately.
This place goes above and beyond with both the style and taste they pack into each doughnut! My little ones wake me up just to get their pink doughnuts for breakfast:)
As beautiful as the display and donuts may look, they do not taste as well. I am not sure how else to describe this. My love for fried dough glazed with sweet goodness can only go so far. Especially, when there are so many other better examples in this town at a much more affordable price point.Artisan-not in disguise maybe a better description here, but the service is wonderful. The staff is super friendly!
Soo good! all donuts are vegan
Donatsu has the fluffiest and flavorful donuts in town! And they’re vegan. What sets Donatsu apart is their kind and warm service. They ask about your day. They seem to know and remember you if you’re a regular so you feel like this is “your” breakfast spot. They’re also very patient and helpful! A couple in front of me wasn’t familiar with some of the Asian flavors like ube or black sesame, so they took the time to describe the flavor palettes and gave honest recommendations based on the preferences the couple expressed. I appreciate that not only were they very adept & knowledgeable about flavors & preferences, they took the time to bridge cultures (no snooty baristas here!).I would like to see them transition away from synthetic plates (might have been styrofoam?) & onto something reusable or compostable (or at the very least paper plates). However I’ll let it slide for now since they’re still an emerging business in Little Tokyo (I know compostables can be expensive). In the future, hopefully!Donatsu has creative and playful flavor combos (like Girl Scout cookie flavored ones!) but my favorite was the matcha pistachio. The slight bitterness from the matcha and nuttiness from the pistachio balanced out the sweetness from the donut itself. Not just pretty photos, delicious in every way!
Super cute and photogenic donuts! The menu is pretty diverse with some classic offerings like the Homer, to the obviously Asian influenced Ube and Royal Dragon (dragonfruit). Super dense and delish! I wholeheartedly recommend this spot! Try to catch them while the donuts are fresh. Those are the best.
This was more than profound. From the fresh scent of the newly baked donuts to the lovely interior that leaves the authenticity of a donut shop with high class. The workers are friendly and have great service and really connect with you always giving there best work. I highly recommend the donut holes and recommend coming here when in the little tokyo area. Thanks for the great service and keep up the good work!!
Delicious vegan donuts.
Cool little donut shop, donuts were yummy 😋 didnt get his name but the gentleman that helped us was great very friendly & gave us tips where to go shopping & eat.
Drinks were great!!
Great customer service . Delicious donuts 😍🤤Theyre airy and fresh and oh so tasty
Came here on my birthday today and had the absolute best service. Love Donatsu!
I absolutely love this donut spot, everyone is super friendly, it’s always clean, and the donuts are so soft, delicious, and affordable! One of my favorite spots to hit on my spare time when the sugar cravings kick in. Also Steven is freaking awesome, always greets us with a smile and just overall has great customer service! Definitely a must go to spot in LA!
Great coffee and donuts!
Best donuts in downtown. Great matcha tea also. Employees are always super friendly.
Some of the best vegan donuts Ive had and I worked at another shop that does vegan gluten free in town. Honestly if vegan is your only requirement come here instead of other choices. Youll be wonderful surprised and pricing is so much better
Nice quaint coffee spot.Great tasting coffee. I ordered a small Americano Drip, of course. Smooth tasting coffee. Strong. Almost no cream needed. Nice selection of Gourmet Donuts & pastries but I didnt have a donut. Good customer service.
Came here to check it out with a group of friends and the guy at the counter gave us each a free donut! They were all very delicious and the customer service is unparalleled. Will be coming back when in the area
Cute spot. Donuts were very tasty. You have to try the samoas donut.
Im not a fan of donuts but the donuts at Donatsu are so yummy! Hands down the best donut in town. The donuts have the right amount of sweetness - its not super sweet like other donuts and they are so soft and fluffy. I highly recommend the Creme Brûlée donut and Ube. Oh, and they are all vegan!
Amazing donuts. Complex flavors that keep blooming as you devour them. Definitely go here!
This vegan donut space is sexy. Artisan flavors and great ambience in the heart of little Tokyo. Do yourself a favor and visit! And buy a donut here!
Great donut spot downtown! Lots of variety
Among best donuts I’ve had. Taste as good as they look. Mocha latte and crepe brûlée donuts are not to miss.
I had an apple fritter and a matcha latte. Both were excellent. Although the portions arent very large, the quality is excellent. The only thing I disliked is that theyve blocked off the restroom, which was available to customers when the building hosted a different restaurant.
These donuts are awesome! You would never guess they are vegan... delicious.
Delicious donuts, aesthetically pleasing store, really close to a lot of cool shops in the Japanese village plaza.
The frosting was great, but the donut itself was amazing. Yeasty, fluffy and not greasy.
I absolutely love this donut spot, everyone is super friendly, it’s always clean, and the donuts are so soft, delicious, and affordable! The service was great and the place as awesome!!!! I LOVE IT!!!
The yeast donuts were nice and chewy with the right amount of sweetness and texture added from the frosting and toppings. The Matcha Pistachio + Rose donut was my favorite with the right amount of sweetness, crunchiness from the crushed pistachios and some bitterness from the matcha. I would definitely recommend visiting for these uniquely flavored donuts.
Fantastic as always.
Nice place to hang out on a weekday. Great selection of donuts 🔥 and friendly staff!
Delicious donuts . If you are in lil Tokyo head over get yourself a donut .
Delicious donuts! I had the matcha and ube donuts. The ube donut was on the sweeter side but the matcha one was just perfect! It would be nice to see mochi donuts in the future :)
Reasonable prices for fancy donuts. They had at least 8 options, maybe more earlier in the day, and I came in the later afternoon. It’s also a chill place to sit. They have fancy coffee at coffee shop prices, but the machine looked like an automatic coffee maker, albeit a fancy one. So I got a donut but skipped a beverage, as there are plenty of milk tea and coffee places nearby. The vanilla bean donut was good, better glaze than, say, Kristen kreme—more interesting and complex. The crime brûlée donut was very god, with a puddingy cream the sign called Bavarian, although I never know if that’s a foamier or a thicker vanilla cream. They had lots of pretty donuts, so I didn’t try most but they certainly make an effort with presentation. It’s a chill place to sit, but minimalist. It’s in a sleepy plaza. The staff was friendly and helpful.
Service is nice and quick however these donuts are pretty basic in actual taste/flavor. Worth the visit but I won’t return.
Amazing Vegan Donuts 🍩 😋 😍 👌
I always stop at donatsu for a Creme brûlée donut when I’m driving down from Utah to San Diego to see my family! It’s a bit of a detour but soooo worth it!!! All of their donuts I’ve tried are delicious and their service is excellent!
Usually not a big fan of fancy overpriced artisan donuts, but this place is legit. Great donut packed with amazing flavors. Favorites were the coffee and oreo cookies. Matcha tea flavoring is right on the mark for those seeking less sweet donuts.
Delicious decadent donuts that are full of flavor. Amazing!
The donut I got the ube was soft and fluffy and the most tastiest donut I ever tried! price was so and so but the donut is not too small and I enjoyed it I dont know if Im saying this because Im hungry.
If you have walked around Little Tokyo chances are you have probably passed by Donatsu and not even known it. Definitely a bit hidden but if you look out for their signs you can easily find it.Donatsu is innovating and doing donuts in their own style. They specialize in VEGAN donuts!!! They are so light and airy you can eat a few and not feel gross after. They have some great unique flavors like Ube, Matcha Pistachio, Cookies & Cream, and more!My favorite was the Crème brûlée with bavarian creme. With the layer of crunchy caramelized sugar on top this was one delicious donut! Definitely recommend anyone visiting Little Tokyo to give this place a shot.
I am very allergic to dairy, so this place is like a gift. The matcha pistachio rose donut was sublime, as well as the lavendar cashew milk cappuccino. This place could convince me to be an (elevated) junk food lover!
Yummy donuts if very unusual flavors to me.
The donuts here are good they are soft and fluffy try the ube i recommend it the price was eh ok but the donut was not that small also the service was wonderful
Incredible, better than ANY donut Ive ever had!! Out of this world ♥️♥️🙌
Filled me up in no time. Certainly worth going back to.
Delicious donuts, priced fairly would recommend others to check this neat little place out!
The mocha latte donut is pastry cocaine. Staff is super nice and their coffee is not bad either. Inventive with the flavors. Ube needs more ube if that makes sense. Never had a dissapointing donut from here
Delicious! It was soft, fluffy and everything i want in a donut. Get in my belly!
Great experience - friendly staff and delicious doughnuts.
Great donuts! Love the vegan Apple fritters.
Dounut was beautiful with a orchid flower on. It cost $4.25.
Fantastic Donuts. Never eaten before
Delicious vegan donuts. Kombucha on tap
I absolutely love craft donuts so when I saw this place on social media, I wanted to try the unique flavors! I absolutely love matcha desserts but I also have high expectations for them as I have eaten so many quality ones in Japan. A lot of times when I try matcha desserts here in the US I get disappointed as the flavors are not as rich as I hope. However, Donatsus matcha pistachio rose donut not only have a evident matcha flavor, it is also a creative blend mixed with the rose and pistachio. All flavors come together and enhances each other.I also tried the ube donut and loved it as well. Strong ube flavor without it being too sweet.
The Churro donut was delicious
A little pricey, but these perfectly sweet vegan doughnuts are worth it. My favorites have been the blueberry, golden dragon and Homer doughnuts.
