We used Sun-Star Electric via a distributor to rebuild motors on two occasions. The first rebuild went well and when another large submersible motor failed, we did not hesitate to utilize them again.The second rebuilt motor failed within six weeks of installation. The installation was at the same location as the first rebuild by the same electrician with over 30 years experience. When we sent the motor for evaluation, the Sun-Star technician stated that the Variable Frequency Drive settings were such to cause the failure of the motor and it would not be repaired under warranty. These are the same VFD settings that have been in place for years and the previous equipment did not fail within six weeks.My company is going to spend over $15,000 to repair the motor a second time (at another repair facility which is to be determined) and get our customer back to a redundant pump station.If something my company installed for an owner failed within six weeks, the only situations under which we would not provide warranty are vandalism, or a lightning strike that overwhelmed the lightning protections available today. Either of these two contingencies are insurable and our municipal customers would be reimbursed for the expense. The fact that previous work at the same location repaired in the same way always lasted for years would make it an immediate decision to take care of the customer without cost.Sun-Star Electric apparently does not share the same mindset.It seems that most of their customers are pleased with their work. If you use them and have a good experience, all is well. If you have an equipment failure from their rebuild shop within six weeks of installation, be prepared to provide a plethora of information which their technician will likely use as an excuse to not warranty their product.
