Catch the short movie explaining the history of the McHenry family and their activity in Modesto before starting the tour. Showings in the adjacent visitor center start 10 minutes before the tours, which begin on the half hour between 12-4. You can enjoy a cup of tea and cakes while watching! The docent led tour was very informative about the mansion and its furnishings including its multiple restorations. I would have enjoyed a bit more on the family’s history and how they influenced the turn of the century development of this area. Worth the 90 minutes spent here.
My daughters wedding reception was held in the Mansion garden this past May (2017). It was beautiful! The garden was the perfect place for an evening, outdoor reception. The flowers, the lights, the music; everything came together for a night full of laughing, dancing, and enjoying family & friends! There are not enough words of gratitude for Laura and the other staff. Laura went out of her way to make my daughters experience uncomplicated. She was supportive and helpful above and beyond the call of her position! Our experience at this venue was shaped by Lauras kindness to us, and her willingness to share her knowledge and wealth of ideas. Her involvement with our family will be shared over and over again as we remember a warm, spring evening full of love and laughter! Thank you Laura, for everything! The Cypert Family
The McHenry mansion is a remnant of Modestos glory days. It is more beautiful inside than outside- and it is very beautiful on the outside. Guided tours are free, informative and are led by spectacularly nice tour guides. I only ding it 1 star because the tour was about twice as long as it needed to be and focused very little on the family itself- it was mostly focused on how the various artifacts came to be in the house.
From the minute you pull up curbside this place pulls you in. The architecture is magnificent. The surrounding grounds perfectly groomed. I could spend hours going through the rooms marveling at all of the details. Add to this the added bonus of being able to rent this jewel for private events. I was very fortunate to have recently coordinated a wedding at the mansion( I own Magical Moments Event Planning and Coordinating). Laura, Lana and staff are over the top sweet hearts. I would love to work with these ladies any day! And the room back drops are a photographers dream for wedding shots. I highly recommend McHenry Mansion for an afternoon sight seeing as well as a private event venue!
I love to visit the McHenry Mansion. It is a must see any time of the year, but the best time to visit is during Christmas! IT IS FREE TO GO TO SEE! But they are closed on Saturday.
Great tour and enjoyable for Modesto newcomer and east coast friend visiting. Knowledgeable and friendly staff.
Great insightful tour, beautiful mansion with great history.
Beautiful place with great history. Very well kept and super friendly staff. If you are near by check it out, totally worth it.
Very interesting little mansion. Met a very helpful and fun older women named Carletta to guide my tour. The people are all friendly and the tour is very interesting (not to mention free). Whether you like it or not depends on your fascination with history, but to me this is a must stop to enjoy a slice of Modestos past with the addition of pleasant company.
It was so awesomely decorated and beautiful handcarved beds, hutches, buffets,Just so fantastical I wanna go again they are opened every day except Saturday because of their awesome weddings. Its a must for your bucket list..
The McHenry Mansion is a great FREE place to visit. The volunteer docent aka tour guides are knowledgeable and they could almost tell you everything you need to know about the mansion.
The mansion was beautifully decorated for the season. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. It was a very enjoyable experience.
Not only is it a beautiful place to see but its also a very educational its a must-see the Mansion has been through many changes and its very beautiful. The docents are very educated on telling the history of the mansion and McHenry family and how they changed Modesto
A must see if youre in Modesto. Two doors down from the McHenry Mansion itself, it is in another old building. This Visitors Center and Gift Store is where Mansion tours start. A very friendly welcoming place. There are many pictures of the McHenry family and Modesto history. This gift store has attractive merchandise displays with lots of great gift ideas! I find gift items (some for myself) for those hard to please people on my list. I only wish it had more Mansion souvenirs!
An awesome mansion so beautifully restored. A must see. You will be glad you did.
Great place to find a nice gift and holiday items. The profits from this store goes to preserving the McHenry Mansion three doors down the street.

Loved it. Great staff. Always nice to learn about history.
I was here for a wedding and it was beautiful. Although there was some undesired noise from a helicopter and other typical downtown bustle, and the event had to end at 10 due to ghee curfew.
