In early Feb 2021 I placed an order with Minuteman for Scalecoat paint.I received the paint a few days later. After shaking the bottle of white, I opened it as saw fairly large particles of some brownish substance floating on the surface. It was obviously defective. Sent emails with pictures and spoke with the owner who said he would sent a replacement but used the sorry Covid excuse as a reason not to send it, although he had earlier promised to send a matte finish which was in stock. Its April 6 and no paint. So much for using a small business, Made in USA supplier. Guy should be ashamed of himself but he probably isnt.
Great service. Amazing paint. Scalecoat is the only paint that I use for painting my brass trains.
As those of you who read my reviews know, I like to leave positive remarks about things when at all possible. Good work should be rewarded!! But I also tell the truth. Rarely do I have to leave a negative review. This one, however, is mandatory. I had done business with Shawn Cavaretta and Scalecoat Paint/Minuteman Scale Models in New Hampshire/Massachusetts for about 5 years. In mid July 2020, I approached him about doing paint matches for four different colors of Green Bay and Western Railroad colors. He agreed, said he would need a little time, but would get me costs and options. I told him I would send him some locomotives and freight cars he could borrow so he could match the paint easily, and sent these in early August. I dont expect things next week or to be first in line, but one would assume that after a month goes by, one would get some product or an update. But no---nothing. I began to call him, rarely getting him, and then getting excuses (COVID, busy, other projects, not enough help, etc....) and got promises, but no dates, results, or even a quote, despite being promised emails with information. This went on through September, and all through October. Well, I have customers to keep happy, and I dont like jerking people around, nor do I like being jerked around. My last two phone messages went unanswered at all. I then got Shawns dad, who hung up on me, so I called back and left a nasty message, saying return my stuff (about $700 worth of equipment) or I would contact the local police. This is what I had to do. They made contact with him, and lo and behold, my locomotives and cars were returned to me! But the story does not end there! The idiot sent them to the wrong address (when my address is clearly on my letterhead on the note I sent him, and also on the original shipment!) Had it not been for an email notice I received from UPS, I would have never known they were sent, or sent to the wrong address! Fortunately, I was able to jump through all the UPS hoops, and picked it up at the local UPS office. Again---this is not where the story ends. Though this moron paid for the shipping on his end (and I told him when it was civil that if he couldnt handle the project, to send them back and I would pay the postage) he made the incompetent move of sending the package (with postage paid by him!!) as a C.O.D.---charging me $55 to get the package back, with my own stuff in it!! I then had to jump through another hoop, and go to the post office to get a money order (UPS does not take checks, cash, or credit cards!!!) that had to be made payable to Minuteman Scale Models!!!! He charged $55 to do NOTHING!!!! I should note the postage to send the package UPS Ground was only about $17. This is how Shawn Cavaretta does business!!! He is a liar, a cheater, does not follow through on his promises, and hides behind a cell phone and email, not communicating with customers, giving excuses when he does decide to talk to people. Then cheats them out of more money out of spite because he is unable to handle his business properly. Seems as if he has closed his storefront, according to his website. I am of the impression that his service stinks because he is going under. Sometimes that happens---but be honest with people and return their stuff!! DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH HIS FIRMS!!! There are plenty of good alternatives, including Tru-Color Paint and hundreds of other model making firms. I would rate him zero stars, but can only go down to one!
