Not a huge selection of retro games, but like all Great Escape stores, prices are almost always at or below market value. This review is from the perspective of a retro video game collector.Inventory: 3/5- There arent typically many rare or sought-after titles available, but they are always bringing in new inventory and rotating stock.Value: 5/5- They base their prices on current market value and always try to beat the trend by at least a few cents. In addition, Managers Specials and 20% off storewide sales are common.Location: 4/5- Plenty of parking. Organization is there, but not perfect. If youre looking for a specific accessory or controller, you might have to sort through a few boxes of junk to find it.Overall: 5/5 for friendly staff and constantly rotating stock. Clean store, tons of parking. Bathroom key available upon request. If you check back often, you can find some great deals!
Before I get into the guts of my review, Id like to say that the store is clean, the staff was nice and helpful, and that my issues are solely with the decline in the overall quality/diversity of the selection for long time comic collectors.Man what happened to this place? 20 years ago it was amazing, but over the last decade it has declined into what feels like a rummage sale. It use to have a pulse you felt from the parking lot. It felt like a store youd see in a movie. There was a time when Id save my money for months and road trip to Nashville to shop at the stores with friends to buy from the sweetest comic selection in the South East... They still have volume, but the selection is just awful and unorganized. It use to have both quantity and quality. You could find nearly anything... and their stock of key comics ($50+ issues) was something youd marvel at.I stopped in 5 years ago, again in late 2019, and then again over the weekend and its just so sad.... Im sure new people think its great b/c the space is so big, but it was and could be so much more. I dont what changed, but it feels like a shell of its former self. :(
Great selection of everything from comics, cards, albums, cds and video games. I love the location on Morrow/Charlotte pk. Great parking options.
This a great store, especially for create diggers. They have a huge selection ready to flip through. Some real good video games and movies as well.
Interesting place to find cds that are not available. Family atmosphere. Glad to have stopped for a visit
Place is huge. Almost anything in enterainment u could want. Awsome.
As the meme said I came looking for copper and found GoldStaff was helpful. Super polite and directed me to where I would find my desired item.I recommend this place they have vinyl records, video games, movies, comic books and minis.
Great place for movies, comics and games. Sometimes I hate to leave but I know eventually ill have to. There was one time I......... Well........ I...... Uh....... O never mind... Its not that important, the important thing is you cant beat the service and selection available at the great escape. Id buy the whole store if I could.
If you want comics or records, its a good place to go still. Used to be an absolutely amazing place to find really crazy stuff. Last few years things really havent shown up there anymore. Not sure if thats because of the store itself or because people are taking their crazier things online, but the excitement of finding something really unique and off the wall there hasnt happened for me in a while.
Clean store well-organized. Kind of staff not really much else you can say
Had a nice selection of vintage stuff. Will definitely keep going back.
I went to the great escape when I was younger, the place has lost its soul. Its full of hipsters. Not a fun place anymore
Super friendly staff at the Charlotte location (not so much at the Madison location). As an avid vinyl collector, I’d say the this is one of the two best stores in the city for used, collectible albums (the other being Phonolux). Prices are reasonable. Awesome comics selection also. They are a Nashville tradition so check this place out!
Friendly staff and super sales, always reasonable trade in options. Some of their goods are a bit overpriced.
Pretty big selection of records for great prices! They also have posters, band tees, VHS tapes/DVDs, retro and modern gaming accessories, and more! I left with 5 albums for $23 or so.
You may have to dig a little to find them. But theres gems to be had here for sure. Overall great place! Only complaint is that the aisles are very tight.
Fantastic selection of record albums. Comic selection current and back issues was really good too. They even had a handful of old Atari cartridges
Ive always loved going to the Great Escape. Awesome merchandise at reasonable prices. Great, knowledgeable customer service.
A Nashville Nerd institution! Awesome selection of comic books, games, vintage music, and so much else. Awesome prices, super friendly staff!
Great place to find music, comics, movies and weird stuff.
Collectibles are well taken care of and there are alot of retro Collectibles as well
Sold all my albums here. Including a complete set of Pink Floyd from Metal to The Wall.
Nice selection of new releases, keep an eye out for good stuff in the used records
This place is so cool. Staff is nice and really funny. Cant wait to go back!
Pretty good selection and helpful friendly staff
This place has great used LPs and CDS, videos, posters, all kinds of hobby stuff.
Really huge selection, clean store, nice folks. Good prices.
Quality management of the nerd memorabilia that a nerd would want. Great organization of media and employees are available but allow you to browse undisturbed.
I havent been here in awhile so it was nice to see what they had. Pretty cool.
Lots of cool and unique things.
Take some time, do some digging. Lots to see and very reasonable prices!
Fun record store. Knowledgeable staff. New Arrivals put out regularly.
I go for the comics. Some great stuff in the value boxes
Whether Im there for my weekly comics or just to browse their massive movie or music collection, it is always a nice experience. David and crew are always so chill and very friendly.
Good selection to browse through. Friendly staff too.
I was extremely satisfied with my visit and my call before I came in to shop. I used to sell my items here more often than I shopped here, but now I know Ive been missing out. Everyone who works here provides great customer service with ease. Offered me many items all competitively priced with online prices even being beat. Love it!!! Saved me time and money, literally. I will definitely be back sooner rather than later.
Great place. Its always my first stop when i go to nashville. They have a little of everything could have a bigger pokemon card and video game selection but the variety makes up for it. The staff are very nice the lady that had to unlock the pokemon case was helpful and didnt get aggravated when i asked for multiple cases to be unlocked when they were pretty busy. 5 out of 5
Always awesome!
Fantastic collection of records, movies and comics. A small selection of card games and table top products. Very fun place.
Awesome store! Great finds.
Awesome place....great selection
Amazing CD selections. Had a CD my son has been looking for, for a long time. Their shirts and sweatshirts are a great value and perfect for souvenirs.
Ive been going to The Great Escape since I was just a pup. I grew up next to the one in Madison and remember going to the old Cinema 16 theater that used to be next to it! This was before it moved in the same lot and expanded to be bigger and better. Nasvhille has grown, and The Great Escape has grown with it. You guys are awesome, keep up the good work! See you Saturday for the sale!
Good place to geek out but the toy selection is getting small
Ive been shopping at the Great Escape since it was just one store in Midtown on Broadway. The Charlotte location is a great place to buy records. Their prices are very reasonable. Good selection of comics and movies too.
Swindlers and con-artist!!! I traded a bunch of old games not knowing that one of those games was the PS2 holy grail game KUON. If you look on eBay, it sells for 800.00+ and they gave me 20,00 bucks! Dishonest people who took my games and put them behind glass with an ungodly price tag! They will screw you over any chance they get so KNOW the value of what youre selling beforehand! They did the same with many of my vintage games. Ill never walk in either of their stores again!! Hustlers!
Retro.vintage.Nice travel down memory lane.
Great shop, good selection of vinyl and helpful employees. Will definitely be back
Awesome place! Closed on Monday and Tuesday :-(
A great experience every time
Always a pleasure to go there if Im selling or buying collectables
Nice place friendly people, the comics could be placed better
Is this where those WW2 guys go to escape from the Germans? Disclaimer: Germans are a great people, I as an individual Im far worse than them when playing video games. If you are looking to be surrounded by people who are too smart for society and sabotage their own careers by sticking to their values then guys this is the place. Seriously the staff are good/friendly people and are knowledgeable on all things pop culture. They school me every time.
Always a great stop! Takes a little searching but theres always little gems there if you search for them. And pricing is reasonable too!!
Wasted half an hour driving here to find out they are now closed Mon/Tues. I would really like to support your business but hard to do when youre not open :-( My fault for not checking online and assuming things relatively back to normal. Ill visit on another day...I love coming to this place and think its the best comic book shop in town. Giving 4 stars instead of 5 because you have to ask a clerk to see the ASM selection. Come on - its the most popular title. Many times Id like to ask to see the selection - and might have bought something that caught my eye - but didnt bother because too much of a hassle to go through all that when Im not 100% sure Im going to buy something. Hate to make the clerk stand over me and I end up not finding anything I want to buy. Can you put the high $$ ones on wall and leave the cheap ones in the regular bin for customers to thumb through?
Whats not to like about this place? It was around when I was growing up and now I take my kids there. We love browsing the comic books marked for .48 and .99, what a bargain! They enjoy reading them and its not a big deal if one gets torn. Its well organized they have music including vinyls, an array of comic books, new and old, and other vintage items. Everything is well organized and they know their stuff about whats hot and not.
Good record and comic shop. I have found some good heals here in the last. Definitely worth going when they have the side walk sale at either location.
Really neat store with alot of cool stuff to look at. Im pretty impressed with the variety of stuff they carry, but I do wish they had more of some of it. Also, the staff doesnt seem very eager to want to help, but they are by no means rude. All in all, its a place I go fairly regularly, but I usually leave the store empty handed.
Lots of merchandise especially comics.
Cool place to find comics and vinyl. Nice staff. Found some hard-to-find Power Records vinyl from the 80s here. Good selection of trade paperbacks. Cool stuff everywhere.
Absolute gems have been discovered at The Great Escape. Bought gifts for all my friends who appreciate music on vinyl. Hands-down the warmest staff on Charlotte Avenue. The most thrilling feature of this record store is that I can flip through comics without being heckled for peeking! Same with music, they have a station near the video game display cases where you can preview a vinyls quality and sound in studio headphones. Ugh, I cannot stress what a haven this establishment is. Glad I live just 1 minute walking from it! RIP Goodwill...
I love The Great Escape! I lived in Nashville for 20 years and have visited all locations. I married a guy from North Carolina and relocated but I come back to visit relatives a couple of times a year . My husband is a music lover and has a huge collection of albums, cassettes and CDs so I took him to check it out and he now makes plans for us to come to Nashville just so he can shop and browse. Always find lots to buy!!!
Love this place. They have a lot of everything, from books, collections of action figures, movies, music. And so much more. Very laid back and enjoyable if you like to just disappear into yourself and browse.
Best place ever! Comics, cds, LPs, movies, toys, video games and accessories....what more could you want?
Good prices on some stuff, lots of variety
Nice folks there. We go in for the MTG cards and they have a massive selection in their nickel boxes. You can actually find some decent cards too. They also have rares and more expensive cards too.
Came in to get some items looked at for how much trade in credit i could get since they said they couldnt give me an estimate over the phone. told i had to leave my stuff there for them to “test it” and they would get back to me. i asked how long that would take and the man helping me replied with “however long it takes is however long it takes.” what kind of response is that? apparently nobody has ever traded in anything before so they cant give any sort of estimate on how long my things are going to be sitting there for it seems. ridiculous.
If you’re into vinyl or cds, this is the place to be. Comic selection is good, but mostly 90s excessive printed books. Not much as far as keys or high dollar back issues. The wall books are a mix of modern books in the $10-$20 range and older non-keys (many priced a bit higher than they deserve to be). All in all not a bad store, but not worth going out of your way for.
Reasonable prices, good selection.
Still the most reasonably priced place in Nashville to buy used vinyl, and they have a great selection. Its not a cozy place (a bit like a florescent-lit small grocery store) but its size provides plenty of space for those records, comic books, DVDs, and video games. The folks up front can be busy at times, so may come across as brusque, but mostly theyre helpful and very knowledgeable.Oh, and in the back, there is a great selection of 78s for Victrola players, most look to be in mint very good to mint condition. Finally, found out the other day, they have an online store, and they will ship.
Absolutely bloody marvelous. My new favourite crate digging destination. The 45s for a dollar a piece is a top place to find some solid slices of soul.
I went for a 25 cent music blowout sale on Saturday. Had fun. Didnt find anything I couldnt live without but the weather was nice. So it was good to be out doing something.
Great place to do some low key shopping, they have used CD, movies, videos games, comics and super hero toys. Always fun place to check out.
I go here every week with my boyfriend to get his comics and he loves it. Always some interesting finds.
Great prices on toys, records, old mags comics, graphic novels and more. Fantastic clearance section with lots of bargains. Plus 50 CENT COMICS! Great place for buying gifts or collectibles. Super polite staff.
Every time I come here I spend way too much time and buy way too many CDs and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Love this place. Great selection, great prices. My go to when I want new music.
Used comics movies music and toys! Buy sell trade is the name of the game. This is a west Nashville staple!
Great place to find older movies and records
They have a pretty decent selection of comics and did a good job sorting them but their prices were mediocre. I asked if they would work with me on the price since I was buying a large quantity and the guy shot me down instantly; they did their standard 10% off marked price which they do for all back-issues. With that 10% off, the prices came out at or slightly above market value on pretty much every book I bought. In the end it wasnt enough of a price gouge for me to walk away from the purchase but I doubt Ill go back in the future.
Love this place! Went there to pick out comic books for my son for Christmas and ended up shopping for myself. Cant wait to bring my son there to get more. Of course they also have an extensive collection of music, movies, video games, toys, posters and more!
Ive always loved the Great Escape and visited multiple locations every time I was in Nashville. First time Ive been in a while and the pricing and staffing have remained consistent. This time the selection left a little to be desired in my opinion but I cant really hold that against them.
Amazing selection! Great prices! Some very VERY obscure amazing finds here! (Especially if you like British prog!) I spent $60 at Great Escape today and want to spend more but I need to stop.
I really like The Great Escape. We were able to browse a large cd selection and larger vinyl collection and find some interesting items for purchase and for nostalgia. I really like that they put out all types of vinyl, as I am seeking out hard to find k-tel and Ronco albums from the 70s and most places dont offer these for sale. The vast majority of used items are in extremely good condition and definitely worth the prices they ask. Some interesting memorabilia are offered at very fair prices. Ill be back.
So much fun to walk around and browse here! Great selection of literally anything you can think of, in terms of media and culture... movies, comic books, music, action figures, Magic the Gathering... I spent most of my time on my last visit checking out the $.99 bin of CDs, found at least 6 or 7 treasures (or things worth taking a one dollar gamble on!). There are usually stools or something to sit on the check out all the stock, good hours and easy parking. Overall, a fun place to check out, and keep your eyes peeled for sales!
Fantastic selection and beyond reasonable prices! I picked up the GI Joe movies on bluray for 3 bucks! Even if it sucks its a good buy
Ive been a customer of the Louisville location for years, but today I finally went to the last one I needed to go to so that i had been to all four. Definitely the largest of the 4 (although its been awhile since Ive been to the Madison location). Reminds me more of the Louisville store than the others, except this one isnt cramped, and thus it has room for more stuff, especially vinyl. Sadly, while bigger it has about the same amount of RPGs as the Louisville store. Worth going to if in the area, and is definitely bigger on the inside than it looks outside.
One of only two spots in Nashville to get NEW COMIC BOOKS, The Great Escape is a clean, friendly place to get music, movies, video games, comic book, and other collectibles/memorabilia. Highly recommended.
This place always has great finds from all different genres
Good selection
Great collection of used vinyl, cds, dvds, comics.
Always a good time thats guaranteed to lighten your wallet. 😁😁😁
Not really a record shop so much as a flea market that also has records. Their new vinyl selection is pretty small and was at least a few dollars more expensive than the other shops I visited today in town. Were selling super scratched albums for way more money than they’re worth. Girl who i asked for help didn’t know a thing about music.
