We had a fantastic experience working with Nomita and Sarah at Spruce. We wanted to give our home a soulful uplift and they were invaluable in guiding our design process and sourcing the best wallpapers, curtains, and paint designs. They were so fun to work with, extremely knowledgeable, and were great at letting us go round and round until we finally settled on what we wanted. We would not have been able to pull off our incredible newly designed digs without them. They also work with the best and most professional installers, painters, and seamstresses so you know you are getting the best execution. We highly recommend making an appointment and hanging out in their beautiful showroom on Magazine to look at all the possibilities. Youll be so happy you trusted Spruce with your project!

My experience with Spruce left me with the opinion that the owner is wildly unprofessional, irrational, and shows an astonishing lack of integrity and personal responsibility.Lets say you go into a restaurant, look at the menu, and order $200 worth of food and drinks. Then the waitperson comes over, after a really long wait, and says, I just wanted to let you know that your food will be right out, but that was an old menu, and your bill will actually be $300.00. So, did you want me to bring the food, or would you rather leave?When you point out that that was the only menu you were given, the waitperson takes the menu, tears it up in front of you, claims it never existed, and accuses you of being racist and sexist for pointing it out. What would your opinion be of a place that did business this way?This is more or less analogous to what happened when I tried to hire Nomita, owner of Spruce.About five weeks ago, I was looking at their website, and saw a page advertising a price of a paint consultation: 4 rooms for $200. This sounded great, so I stopped into their retail shop to get more information. I brought up the web site price in order to verify the it, which Nomita did. I gave Nomita and her two assistants a detailed description of my house, as the walls are all wood, and I wanted them to be aware that it was an unusual job, giving them the opportunity to adjust expectations, and/or price. They seemed fine with everything, and emailed afterwards to set up an appointment five weeks later.One day before the appointment, Nomita emailed to let me know that the price would not be $200, but $300. She demanded to know where Id seen the price sheet, and claimed theyd had no prices on their site for six years. So I went to the sites home page, and two clicks later I was on the page in question. I emailed her the link, and a screen shot of the page, assuming that shed honor the advertised (and agreed upon) fee, and Id see her the next day.Instead she writes back, that that page only exists in some black hole on the Internet, and the real price is $300.00, though she was clearly aware that I had every reason to believe that the fee was the one Id brought up when we met.$100 either way isnt going to change anybodys life, and its probably even a reasonable price for the job. But its not possible for me to do business with someone who changes the rules at the last minute. I gave her the opportunity to do the job at the original price, but she insisted on the new, last minute price. I declined.Over the course of the last 24 hours, Ive left some reviews, because I think this behavior is pretty outrageous. Rather than thinking it over, and accepting responsibility, shes written me several emails, doubling down, claiming the web page in question doesnt exist -and basically accuses me of unearthing it from some deep internet graveyard. It didnt exist at that point, because, as she told me in an email, shed just removed it.She demanded the review be removed and then accused me of taking advantage of her as a minority woman (thats a direct quote from her email). Which is infuriating, and baseless. I was certainly willing to hire her before she suddenly jacked up the price 50%, and the subject of her gender or race never came up. Evidently, any criticism of her business practices can only stem from a bigot, in her view.I simply have no respect for, and certainly no professional use for anyone who doesnt honor their agreements, and behaves both dishonestly and irrationally.
