Sunrise Mart is the best. They have a few locations around the city but I frequent the one in SoHo. I love their sushi and food selections. So many yummy items to choose from. I personally love the pork chop sandwich and their spicy tuna & spicy salmon sushi. Also check out their drink and snack section. So many goodies from Japan to choose from. Definitely recommend giving them a try!
I like this place. It always had a good selection of japanese foods hard to find elsewhere in the area. As someone who doesnt read Japanese, occasionally I dont know what Im holding and have to try to go by the pictures, so sometimes Ill just roll the dice on it and Im rarely disappointed.
Always come here to get my asian groceries, they also have a good selection of ready to eat foods
If you live in Manhattan you would love it. Great and fresh Japanese food and groceries, tones of options. Highly recommended
Im really disappointed with sunrise mart! I purchased shishito peppers that were packed on the 4th (today is the 5th,) and I saw that several were already molding. Unfortunately this wasnt something I couldve expected or even checked for as the packaging on the peppers is with plastic wrap that I couldnt have undone in the store before purchasing.Im disappointed that they put molding peppers on the shelf and have 0 idea why they would. At almost $12/pound Id expect that they would make sure that inventory was checked. Extra frustrated because with COVID-19, receipt says there will be no returns allowed... Not one stars because prior to today I had good experiences with bento lunches and buying non-perishable goods; for my first time buying produce- its a never again!
Fresh and neatly packaged seafood/meat and vegetables selections! They have excellent quality and are reasonably priced. I love the thinly sliced meat that can be used for many Asian dishes. The other items in the store are a bit pricey. Sunrise is not a place I’d go for big Asian grocery hauls - there are cheaper places. But it’s great for selected Japanese items that can’t be found easily elsewhere. The ready-to-eat food they serve is also great.
I know when you are in a big city, finding certain items especially ingredients as well as some specialty foods is hard to find. If you are looking for Japanese / Asian ingredients and food look no further as this place will probably have it.They also dish out hot foods such as Japanese curry, rice bowls, and noodles. In the fridge section they have grab and go sushi all at a very reasonable price. My local friends might be wondering why are a couple of Asians who live in Hawaii where there are tons of Asian things is coming into this store. Well there are some secret ingredients hard to find that my better half had to grab. Sorry Im not telling you what it is as everyone might buy it all up.
I bought sea urchins and Sashimi of salmon, and tuna and they were tasty and fresh.
I love all the sunrise marts since they have fresh seafood, rice balls, japanese sweets and noodles and groceries. So if you ever want to make your own sushi, ramen or simply enjoy something simple or you miss Japan you can find what you need here. The one in Brooklyn is much bigger and has a food court so if you get the opportunity, I would recommend that you check that one out. However during the weekend it gets really busy so visit at your own discretion especially during these covid times.
I was told it is SUPER SUPER long line during lunch hours. Well i get to enjoy this place all to ourselves during dinner hour. Its very very empty around 8PM but it closes at 9 or something.I think a walk passed this place a couple time and not noticing it. Only if I knew. Their noodle selection is amazing but a bit price for such a low key setting.
A great Japanese grocery store with a big selection.
A heavily stocked and tightly packed convenience store conveniently tucked away, this mart saved my day with the vast variety of Japanese products it has with both freshly prepared and pre packaged foods, and small sections of beauty, toiletry and home products. There’s a bathroom for customers inside as well.
A very nice neighborhood Japanese supermarket, you can basically get most of ingredients or seasoning you need here with good selections.
I work near by and every time I get food there, the quality is worse than before as well as service. I am JAPANESE and proud but I feel such shame. perhaps rent in ny is too high w low budget-lacks everything,everywhere..I got a combo sushi for $13.99 and i get only a piece of ginger? Horrible! You guys need to retrain your employee !!! Cross the street the Gourmet Garage’s American style sushi quality is better yet it is not authentic sushi :( too tasty favor with mayo
A small sunrise market, but boasts all of the essentials (and also fresh meals and bentos) of larger ones.Tried two of the larger bentos while shopping here. The hamburg one was better than the salmon, but both were not bad.
Best Japanese grocer in the city. Better selection than the rest, and with decent prices. Would definitely recommend
Cozy Japanese grocery store in the heart of Soho packed full of food from A to Z. Everything you need to prepare an authentic Japanese cuisine is available right here. Lots to look at and you can buy up all the goodies in the store if you are not careful :-). There is an indoor dining area by the entrance. Prepared meals stay hot in case you want to eat it before you go.
Such a wide variety! You can find almost everything you know of Japan here. Comparing to the other branch this one looks more like a convenient store. Fresh produce is more limited but you’ll find the most typical stuff. Frozen section is as packed as the other branch. The most beautiful section is the ready-to-eat and drinks. Sushi rolls, bento boxes, poke, salad with cooked protein, tonkatsu rice bowl. AND hot ramen!! There are seatings upstairs and a microwave for eat in. It can get a little packed during lunch time because it’s probably one of the cheap and healthy lunch spots in Soho.
Great selection. Good prices
Best price for GABA sprouted brown rice.
Nice and cozy little shop with tables to rest!
Delicious foods... miss the bustle
This is my favorite Japanese market in SoHo.
You can find so many Japanese goods in this store, from candy to hair products to grocery goods. Things are fairly reasonably priced, and when it comes to goods like soy sauce, you do have diversity of brands to choose from. I kept scanning shelves because it seemed like every time I looked there was something new! So many neat foods here.
Small intimate store with amazing asian goodies and ramen!
Great memories over there...
They have some of the things that I was looking for, but not as many of the fresh specialty ingredients. Ill have to check back again as the seasons change to see if they get different things in. Also was a little expensive.
Small Japanese grocery store that also sells prepared foods. They get a strong lunch crowd so theyre pretty strict about laptop use during those hours. If you need basics in a pinch, this is a good place to pick them up but otherwise there are bigger/better Japanese grocery stores out there. No shortage of matcha snacks though!
I love this place but remove a star for poor service. My company has two locations, one by the SoHo Sunrise Mart and one by the Industry City location. So I pickup lunch and/or dinner here a few times a week! A great offering of authentic Japanese prepared foods, groceries and beers. Unfortunately I have had two negative experiences with their credit card minimum policy which is $10. I understand businesses dont want to eat the processing charge when someone buys a pack of gum. But twice I have rung up my lunch at $9.79 and been told in a firm manner I cant use my card. Reminding the cashier that I was a frequent customer, he didnt care and just pointed to the sign indicating their policy. With no cash on hand and no desire to be forced into purchasing additional items I informed them I would take my lunch business elsewhere. And I did for about 6 months. I have since returned but it happened again today. $9.79, nope, no card. I yielded and added a $4 pack of cookies to my purchase. But it makes me feel once again like taking my business elsewhere and that Im not valued as a regular. $0.21 to keep a repeat customer guys? Maybe its worth it...
Sunrise Mart has became one of my “must go” locations in Manhattan for 4 years since I’ve became a international student who studies around this place.Basically if you want any popular snacks, Japanese food, famous instant noodles, and maybe Asian lunch and dinner, this is definitely a preferable place to go to.
Great Japanese grocery store but $10 card minimum
Good prices and selection of japanese snacks, drinks and foods. They have some premade onigiri, rolls, and meals in the back. Upstairs mezzanine has seating for dining (not sure if indoor dining allowed during covid). They even sell tuna and salmon to make your own sushi/sashimi.
I get they you havent renegotiated your card merchant policy since the mid-90s or whatever, but kicking your customers to the back of the line so they can grab something else or go to an ATM to meet the $10 minimum requirement to make the transaction worth it is really a disservice. I really just wanted a couple cold drinks on a hot day and didnt have any cash on me. some people also consider cash unsanitary in these times. I even offered to pay whatever fee was making this not worth continuing the transaction. The way I was booted after waiting in a long line really turned me off this place. Please move to a different system which doesnt penalize you for small transactions or at least dont make your customers suffer for it.
Best japanese mart Ive seen in a long time I recommend people come here.
Must go-to for fresh sushi and excellent chef in the back. So helpful in choosing what you are craving for as well as taking the time to explain which msg ingredients used.
Love this place. I work in the area so its great when you want a quick and filling hot meat. Nice sweets selection and I hear the sushi is good too.
It’s a very cute and authentic Japanese store very good service, very clean, and amazing quality of produce
This place has awesome service as well as yummy menu. One of my favourite spots ever. The food and drinks served rapidly and the prices are economical. Recommended.
Good lunch spot. You can basically get all the Japanese staples. Nothing will blow you away but you wont hate anything either.
Nice market very polite staff. A person inside opened the door for me which is the first time in over 3 years this has happened to me in NYC. I was floored by the good manners of the patrons and staff. Complete opposite when you step outside and have men jumping ahead of women to get into the bus and young men sitting in disabled seating in the bus while elderly people stand looking sad, but that is how many people are nowadays.
Great place for work lunch and Japanese snacks. If you want to buy grocery or food under $10 you need to prepare cash.
Hidden gem for travelers on a budget
Do not go in the middle of lunch rush if you have never been before! First time I went I did this and I was a little overwhelmed by the number of people in a small space and the number of choices. Went again a week later around 130/2 and it was great. Ramen is amazing and customization options are great
Very extensive selection of Japanese goods, I could spend all day in here.
Japanese grocery store with multiple areas for dining-in. Hot food is prepared during lunch hours; at other times your choices are limited to either sushi, cold noodles or packaged food. A limited selection of fresh produce is also available. The checkout line can get long but with four cashiers, it does move along quickly.
I honestly enjoy the food and service, great area right next to where I live. The cashiers are always nice. I highly recommend this place.
Delightful selection. It will be a new go to for items that I might struggle to find in my own neighborhood.
CANT REMEMBER
I thought the shop was super cute. I wanted to eat the donkatsu don? because I heard its really good there but unfortunately they were all sold out. bummer.. The food was just okay. The price was reasonable. :)
My favorite lunch spot/grocery. Huge selection and its all great. Fantastic selection of Japanese snacks and Asian groceries. Lunch time is crowded. Can sit and eat there or takeaway
I do not recommend coming during lunch time on weekdays. Its insane and not worth going. But I love this spot for the homey Japanese food and the various specialty produce I cant get anywhere else!
Awesome food, awesome workers, homely atmosphere. Greatly recommend
Such a great selection of items. Fantastic food in the restaurant. Easy to identify what you want to eat and everything is fresh. Place to eat upstairs or to take out.
Go to place for Japanese groceries.Theyve got all the basic staples one would need to keep a Japanese pantry stocked. Prepared food is great when youre in a time pinch or need a fast lunch.Sometimes they can run low on certain stock but its almost always back in good time.
Great place to get snacks and some lunch
The selection is good. Prices are decent. I like their buns and getting snacks there I cant find elsewhere. It should be noted that many of the hot meals that are pre-prepared were frozen and heated up for munch time. I work near by and have seen them bring in the frozen meals in the morning. They still taste good IMO but I know some people like food fresh. In that case order directly from them or go across the street to gourmet garage for fresh sushi. The staff is friendly but pay attention to where the line starts because it can be confusing if youve never been. Id also recommend going before or after the lunch rush (from around 12 to 2). The place is packed full of stuff so when there is a lot of people it can feel very cramped and overwhelming. Overall its one of my favorite places nearby.
I was glad to find out there is this Japanese grocery store in Soho! Very interesting selection of Japanese products. And some to-go lunch items also.
For a small store, there are lots of things, and all things Japanese. Frozen goods, shelfed goods, prepared meals, and food made to order. It has a small seating area to eat if you ordered lunch there. Lots of options. It gets crowded, but service is fast.
Good Japanese grocery store with a solid selection of varied and efficient Japanese lunch options to go, like sushi and bento. There are also hot dishes you can order. Theres also some seating upstairs.
Nice little Japanese market with prepared food in the back. My go to is the salted salmon belly. i try to go at least once a week. Good value.
Best market for japanese goods, and cheap amazing food made fresh (jk it sucks dont come here I want it all to myself xD)
Great spot for quick blue-crab, a bowl of sticky rice and miso soup.. my go-to.. added bonus is the steady flow of interesting people that frequent this eatery. I’ve been eating here for years.. let’s say 10-12 years.
Great place to do some Asian grocery shopping. If youre looking for squid chips or seaweed snacks youll find it here. Great place to grab lunch as well. They have prepped meals as well as order to go noodles, sandwiches, etc..Meals are typical and nothing really stands out but still good.Seating area upstairs but can get crowded at lunch time.
A surprisingly nice spot for quick eats and/or taking food to-go, if you like Japanese.
Super cute! Have a lot of snacks and fresh produce. Warm food to order. Love going here. They dont have everything I look for though.
If I had known about this place my first time in college (Sunrise Mart has been around for a while), I would have practically lived in this store. It makes you wonder what a SoHo in Japan would look like.
Always packed at lunch with people buying to-go sushi and ready-made meals. Theres a small area at the front with tables to eat your food there, but it is usually a better idea to take it to-go. The food is a good value.
This place never disappoints. They have awesome food for affordable rates, there are no long waits even when the place is full.
Japanese Supermarket with wide variety of foodstuffs & cooking utensils & snacks. I bought 2 pretty hair-grips that I had not seen anywhere else.
Has great selection of Japanese food. Has a mini upstairs dining area if you bought food there. There is a bathroom on premise
Convenient lunch spot. The food station in the back will make you fresh japanese specialties. The fries are among the best in Manhattan!
Great grocery for japanese inspired products and items.
The curry here is amazing, be sure to grab some mochi too, so you can hit the credit card minimum.
Good Japanese grocery that’s conveniently located (for me). Lots of stuff and decent prices.
Their french fries are the best here!!! That chili mayo goes well with their seasoned fries. With the variety of foods sold there you can always try something new. The workers are very kind as well which is a plus!!
A good selection of Japanese foods and goods. The sushi is alright and they have reasonable prices on produce.
If you are looking for authentic Japanese food or groceries this is the place to go. They have a nice selection of daily prepared lunches in addition to a plethora of imported candies, snacks, drinks and more.
Good variet. Good place for a quick lunch
Best Japanese market in SoHo.
Love this place, I live outside the state so I cant come often but all their sashimi is tasty and delicately balanced with the right vegetables for flavor, they have all my favorite drinks and snacks, everything I can expect from this place and then some.
