I am a music lover. I used to go to disco-rama in the village many, many years ago. New York City used to have many record stores. Its good to see that Academy is still thriving, they have various genres of music and plenty of vinyl, Jazz,Theater, classical seems to be there concentration, dont let that disway you, they have hip Hop; even saw a few j-dilla albums. Its good to see they still have Cds as well. A quote from the cartoon Fat Albert; he once said Hey Mudfoot U know what were here for; Lay some treats on US. Academy has treats and gems !!

Poor customer service. You can’t listen the record before buy it and there is no cell signal and no WiFi to at least check it on YouTube. How I suppose to buy it?

Weve been coming here for years and years, never leaving empty handed. The knowledgeable people who work here are true gems. A testimony to the faithful followers of this business was the queue of folks waiting for the shop to open at noon on a Thursday!

One of the only places left in N.Y.C. to buy CDs and box sets. Sort of my lifeline! Great staff, clean store, friendly helpful workers. Could be just a little more frequent turnaround of merchandise, but ranks in my Top 3 of stores currently.

What a gem! It’s so heartening to see that places like this are still thriving! This is a very well organized shop with quality and variety of vinyl, CDs, DVDs and cassettes. Staff were knowledgeable and welcoming. Will definitely be returning!

A widely complete store, filled up with records. I liked the fact that it had tons of CDs (not a good idea taking vinyls on an airplane). The staff were really friendly, and the prices were amazing. Found a couple of CDs for 2 bucks, and some rarities as well!

Academy Records is the best record store in Manhattan. They dont have the biggest selection, but they do have one of the absolute best selections of rare and obscure records in NY. Every trip there, always find something new and exciting, the type of vinyl you usually only come across online. They also have just as deep a selection of Movie & Music DVDs, all at very fair pricing. Definitely worth the stop if youre record hunting in NYC.

I Love and support small family owned music shops. Many are gone but many remain. I Am a Vinyl Record Collector to My Core. Thank You Academy Records.🙌☝🙏🌈💖😎🌟👍💿📀💿📼

If youre looking for hip-hop or metal CDs, look elsewhere--lacking would be too weak of a word to describe their selection of either genre. However, if you want classical or opera, theyve got a lot. Not sure about other genres as I was rushed.

Best place for vinyl and CDs in NYC. If you know music and what you want, this is the place to go. I dont suggest if you dont know the music well. Ive never check the condition of vinyl because I trust 100% for their quality. All the people work there are great.

The store is located across the street from my work, its very convenient for me to go on my lunch break.... the Metal section is tiny and 50% of the time I find something I like. Management is all right, sadly in NYC where everyone is on a rush no one has time to be nice with other people.....

If you are smart, youll avoid this place like the plague. Unless you like getting ripped off compared to all other used record stores. Some of their prices are almost twice that of other stores. And dont forget the cliche AH behind the counter that has a big attitude because he does what? Sort used records. What a joke this place is when there are plenty of other better options. But you can always stop by and laugh at the loser behind the counter that probably still lives in his parents basement.

Very good location nearby bus stops and at the main street, close at around 2030, many CD and movie in blueray for purchasing, espcially have model (post war) music for purchasing, pricing around 4.99 to 30.99 or above. Jazz available as well, a nice place for music lovers.

Review №60

Lots of albums and movies at bargain prices. The majority of the stuff they sell is used, but they do sell new items at lesser prices than they sell at major retailers (a Criterion Blu-Ray that sells for about $30-35 at a place like Barnes and Noble will sell about $10-15 less here). The only problem I have with the place is that its just as cramped and tiny as many places in NYC, especially since its only one floor and just a couple of rooms to walk through. Its a nightmare when theres a lot of people around. So if youre looking for movies or albums at bargain prices and in multiple formats (CDs, DVDs, Blus, Vinyl and Cassettes), this is the place to go to.

In the post-Tower records era, this store is the best bet for buyers of classical CDs and LPs. I always like to stop there whenever Im in NYC. One caveat: Check the conditions of the used LP that may interest you; I picked up an LP of Bruckners String Quintet and, after I brought it home and tried to play it, it has a bad nick that caused a broken record syndrome. Disappointing. But I did pick up a superb CD set of Schuberts piano sonatas performed by Badura-Skoda (the RCA recordings). I knew nothing about Badura-Skoda as a pianist until I spotted this set at Academy.

Today i have been there, not my primary record store but it was on my way! it has alot of classic and jazz stuff and for all other genres you really have to know what youre searching for. Im into Vinyls only, especially Soul and Hip-Hop but it was only one LP worth for me, they have 2 boxes with Soul stuff and 1 with Hip-Hop only! New arrivals are highly mixed with all kind of genres! Staff was quite friendly but as an european i was surprised about the tax at the desk when i bought the record, may be normal here :)
