Came here after a hike to fill my belly with delicious Mexican food on a Saturday late afternoon. Unfortunately we were highly disappointed with the flavorless, lackluster food. I am traditionally a proponent of local ethnic food but this one was a let down. I was anticipating a great meal as I walked up to pick up our phone order, admiring the entryway and beautiful cultural visualization presented. Very flat and little flavor in the tamal, enchiladas and floutas we ordered. Paradoxically, the simple chicken soup actually had more flavor and was delicious. Also, need to prudently eat from the to-go boxes (I even tore the top lid to place it under the bottom portion of the container to bolster the softened support). No utensils provided either. Perhaps the food would be better if able to eat it hot at a table there but would have given the review a 1 star if it wasnt for the amicable staff and first impression I received of the restaurant.
This has been my go to great mexican spot since its been open. I grew up around the corner and love their staff and delicious enchiladas, salads and salsa! The best is on a warm day, with an enchilada plate, and a beer served in an ice cold mug (see photo). Also a favorite is the chimichanga and the chicken tortilla soup (when they have it)! Go visit and support this local, family owned spot!
Had an excellent mid afternoon lunch here. Terrific service, excellent food. 5 stars, would totally come back here.
Cute decor indoor and out. Authentic Mexican food. Friendly staff. I had the steak fajitas. ¡Buenísimo! Will definitely be returning.
Stopped by this place while driving through the are. Relied on other Google reviews and decided to try. Very pleased with everything. Wish I could dine in but due to COVID situation had to eat in the car. The place looked nice, staff are very courteous, the food was really good. It felt like a real family-run restaurant. Definitely one of those I sincerely wish a great success.
Nice and quiet and friendly staff. Good food!
Great food. Fast serviceFamily feel and great price performer
Tiny neighborhood place, very good food and friendly family-run.
The man who served us was very warm, welcoming, and kind. Our food was delicious and will definitely come back!
Had really high hopes based on other reviews but food fell a little short. Maybe if it wasnt take out it would be a little better. I will say, I give 5 stars for the people and the service! Very nice, accommodating and on top of their stuff.
Wow! Truly delicious authentic Mexican food and the friendliest service! And did I mention the colonial ambience? Could swear we were in old Mexico. Salud!
Excellent food and service, by a friendly staff. Prices were competative. Portions a little small for me.
It was good as always, have been going there for years . So far Ive never been disappointed But it was cold and a wish I couldve been inside
Very friendly owner operator family owned local Mexican food, tucked in a quiet corner with sun filled outside seating. Great fajitas with steak or shrimp at your choice! Cured my craving right there!
Food was horrible. Almost threw up.
The food was good. The service was great.
The workers were very polite and friendly but very short staffed. There was a live bug in my food when they brought me my plate however they quickly replaced it with a new plate of food. The food was not horrible but did lack flavor. And the dining room itself was a bit warm. The front door was propped open so I assume there was no AC or water cooler.
The service was excellent and the servers were very friendly and the food was excellent and tasty.
Was just introduced to this place. Its a little gem hidden in the back of the strip mall. Will definitely be back. Wish I would have known about this place sooner
Ok so I’ve been looking for a Mexican place and found it!Thus place has the Best Chili Colorado!Awesome service and damn good food
Best Mexican Food forever and ever
Local authentic mexican food. Locals go here.
The food is great, I love the atmosphere the owner is very Personable. I totally enjoyed myself there. I would recommend this place to everybody.
This was the perfect spot to calm our craving for Mexican food. We enjoyed our lunch at a table outside, which was nice. The service was quick and accurate and we were served with a smile. I’d definitely go back!
La Playita was OK. Its in a convenient location, especially if you live in Almaden and the staff was friendly. The food wasnt as bold and spicy as Id expect from Mexican food. I had the Chili Colorado and the sauce was more like gravy than other Chili Colorado Ive had. The salsa was fresh but unspectacular. There are a couple of other Mexican places in the area that have better food and great salsa.
A fantastic home cooking experience. The owner greeted us as soon and we entered and he was friendly, attentive, and gave great recommendations. If you’re in the area, I’d high recommend a stop!
I have been go7ngbthere for years. Since my son was a little boy. He is 26 now. Very friendly DC lyrics, owner operated. Great food and truly the best Sangria in the valley. Almaden Valley that is.
Great food. Great prices.
Great Food! Great People😀
The owner is incredible. Warm and friendly as if you were at home. Wonderful atmosphere! The molé was incredible along with the carnitas. My only gripe is that I dont like the ranch on the salad. Go with thousand island!! (Just not a huge fan of the trashy ranch) [if it aint home made it aint good].To it all off there was a friendly cat waiting to get pet when we left.Overall, taco Bell is a half star La Playita is at a 12. Rock on forever.
The best Mexican food ever. It is just like a Mexican grandma with cook. The authentic spices and tastes of Mexican food.
Great family place. Love the staff and food. Weve been going here for years, and enjoy sitting on the picnic benches out on the patio on warm nights. Serious comfort food.
Great food and staff. Relaxing place for good food
Great food and super friendly and helpful staff
Very comfy place. I like that it was not too spicy. Enchiladas were so good.
Love the food, love the service, friendly family atmosphere. They remember you here and the prices are ridiculously low!
Good no frills food tucked away in the corner.
We enjoy La Playita. Small, family owned, mamas in the kitchen style place. Traditional Mexican fair.
The best thing I can say about La Playita is that it is ordinary. The restaurant itself is aging and in need of a makeover. The cushions on nearly every chair is torn or worn out. The sign on the wall says that they opened in 1991 and the decor looks like its the original effort.Went for lunch and sat down to a small handful of chips and about a tablespoon of watery, flavorless salsa. Not a good start. The soup was under seasoned and consisted of chicken that tasted like it was leftover from last night, potatoes and carrots. Not an impressive soup. If they tossed in some charred peppers it might have improved the soup somewhat. As it was, not impressed.Had the taco and chili relleno combo. Unfortunately the taco was on par with Taco Bell. That is not a compliment. The chili relleno has potential and the sauce was decent, but Ive had better.
Best Mexican food experience Mom and Son own and operate this place great people eat inside or out very clean and always a great experience eating there. You must try it and see for yourself!!
My family and friends have been going to La Playita for approx.18 years, and we love the owners and the great food! Consistently good and a neighborhood favorite.
These guys are best. Been coming here for years. Always the best food and family friendly environment. Local secret...
Good not great. Chicken tasted like it came from a can. This salsa was fresh however there could have been more variety.
Great local cubby hole location. Very welcoming and they put effort in what they serve. They make amazing chimichangas!
Very tasty food, great service too our first time there had the Chile Verde and it didnt disappoint. Congrats
My wife used to live in the area, and wed go fairly often, but now that were out of town, we try to go as much as we can when were back
Nothing special. Just a good neighborhood Mexican restaurant
Owners are great. Excellent service. Not the best Mexican food Ive ever had but very good. 4 star for food. The 5th star is for above and beyond service.
Incredible service, extremely nice. Incredible food and very reasonable prices. Highly recommend it.
The chili verde is awesome
This is our familys favorite Mexican restaurant. Always friendly, fast, excellent service and terrific food. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Great little family place with all the usual menu choices. Friendly staff and good service.
We love this place! Been coming here for probably 20 years. Everything is always delicious- esp the chimichangas :)
Always very friendly. Good food. Almost always great service (just one exception when we got a server I hadnt seen before or since).
Best damn pastor burrito Ive had in a long while. Great atmosphere too.
My mom goes here for lunch often and she took me once. My kids had a quesadilla and I had some tacos . Everything was delicious!👍
Lovely small mom and pop place. Momma comes out of the kitchen sometimes to say hi. Not very visible from Almaden Expy as it sits in the back corner of the little strip mall. Not fancy but good home style cooking. And they have sopes! My favorite and what i get just about every time. They come out warm and a little crispy.
Very good service, food was good, salsa and chips good. I had Huevos con Chorizo, good spicy level mild.
Friendly atmosphere with amazing people. A local gem with great food.
Absolutely love this place, been going there for quite some time. Family owned & operated. Fantastic
Before you read this review, please keep in mind that Im not a huge fan of Mexican food (my daughter is). Add half a star (for a total of 3.5) if youre a real fan of Mexican food. The place is a little moms & pops place, hidden at the very corner of a street mall. They had a few tables outside, but since we were close to sunset, we decided to sit inside to avoid bugs.Inside, its the typical hole-in-the-wall place: Clean, but with a homely look & feel to it. If you expect ambiance and atmosphere, this is not the place for you. Service was incredibly quick. The server was always available and never rushed us to anything. The food is good. Not great, but good. They didnt have the chicken I ordered, so I converted to some beef fajitas. The rice was tasty, and so were as the veggies and the refried beans. The meat was a bit on the hard side (they could have used a better meat for this). My major complaint was that the food was intensely hot (as in temperature.) Even holding the tortillas was difficult and it took a long time for them to cool off to a reasonable temperature; its amazing how something so thin can hold so much heat. Maybe I should bring an oven mitten next time. :)Overall, a good place to eat, but dont expect anything incredible. Recommended if you like Mexican food.
I love this place! Staff is always friendly. Food is always fresh and service is fast. My uncle comes here alot and I know they take excellent care of him. The dining area is beautiful and I love the decorations in the bathroom as well. I almost always order a carne asada burrito. Never once had a problem here. I wish they were closer to my house!
When a restaurant uses Velveeta cheese in their casa dias you know it is not rated very highly.Food had little flavor. Will not go back.
Cool little spot. No margaritas though!
Ive been going here since I was probably 7 years old or younger. Eighteen years later, (and even after living in Gilroy!) I still havent found a better all around Mexican restaurant.
Good food. Could use a few more chips and salsa.
This is an okay restaurant. The prices were economical, the food was okay. The portions were small which mostly matched the prices. I did not like the sauce that the chili rellanos was served with. The sauce was an odd orangish color. For my chili rellanos, I much prefer a red tomato based sauce.
If you can find better, authentic Mexican food within 20 miles Id like to know about it. The cusine here is nothing short of awe inspriring 😀😀😀😀
Best Mexican food ever!
One of my all time favorite Mexican restaurants!! ❤️❤️❤️

Good food. Incredibly friendly people.
A bit run down and tired, food was good and inexpensive.
Family oriented and super friendly! I have never had a bad experience there
Really nice people, food was delicious, and authentic...made from scratch
Great authentic Mexican food. Great service
AMAZING! A personal favorite for going on 20 years!
Cold beer, great salsa..nice kick, fab food, homemade tortillas
2 out of 3 times i have been there they are not ready to serve or closing early.when you sit down for the food, the owner comes out and makes sure she takes care of you.good vegetable quesadilla, beans, spanish rice - tastes great.
Mexico City, Zihuatanejo, Puerto Vallarta, San Francisco, Redwood City, San Jose and Ive yet to find Mexican food as good as here. Its comfort food. The rice and beans are unmatched, and since thats a staple in so many dishes the food elsewhere just cant compare to La Playita. I miss it.
Love La Playita a regular for past few years and my girlfriends for 20+ yrs
