Everyone was very nice. Did a great job. They did it very quickly and at a reasonable price. Thanks so much.
Most excellent bike shop and a great oasis in the Kansas heat and wind. Took great care of me and my bicycle during the 5th running of the Trans Am Bike Race. Their enthusiasm and support of the race is second to none. James and Heather are awesome and I look forward to seeing them again! Thanks again for all that you do - it is very much appreciated!!! This is the most unique place Ive been to. Ive never seen a bike shop that caters to a traveling cyclist like this (at least not in US). Ended up staying at their hostel for three days because my bike decided to break down, so I was waiting for a part to come in. I wish they had showers right there and not around the corner at the rec center. They are expanding though, so Im sure its coming soon.
When the hours posted say they are open at 10am and you are on a bike traveling time is important. We waited around til 10:30 and no one showed up to open the shop. We couldn’t wait any longer. Disappointed.
“A must stop”While riding the Trans America trail I stopped here after a long day. The staff immediately asked if I needed anything. The then quickly brought my bike in and gave it a quick once over and then fixed the minor issues. They have a comfortable couch to relax on and plenty of cold drinks to get refreshed. They operate a
If you’re interested unpleasant encounters with two sullen and disinterested folks - look no further. Not sure what market they’re after - a disparate and uneven inventory leaves one little to no options. You’re looking to discuss bikes, components, or cycling events? Well then - talk to yourself. The male nor female are at all conversant or even polite.Bottom line: enjoy visiting a shop staffed by folks who couldn’t even pretend to give a hoot? This. Is. Your. Place.
Riding through town and needed a new seat. Finally found some guys who understood my needs. These guys know long distance touring and took great care of me.
My two year old son and I walk in and the owner asks what can I do for you and I say we are just looking and he doesn’t respond back. I look around and I see a total of about 10 bikes on the floor and most of them are vintage bikes. I didn’t see not one mountain bike. There was one tandem bike in the middle of the floor and my son was touching the wheel. He wasn’t hurting it or anything. The owner popped up really quick and said I don’t want him touching that it’s a $7000 bike and I don’t want him spinning the wheels. I thought ok he’s not but if I was going to pay 7000 for a bike I would want the wheels to spin. The whole experience just came off as rude and awkward and the selection of bikes was embarrassing.
I had to help the mechanic fix my friends bike. After they gave the drive train a clean I think they forgot to lube it again as it was immediately making noise.I also stayed in the hostel attached to this bike shop and found it to be very expensive with many little extra costs. The owners really want to appear as if theyre chill but unfortunately for everyone are far from this. The hostel is clean and pleasant but if anything too nice for cycle tourists. Its as if the owner has created the business without really being aware of the needs of the people using the place. Finally there is the landyards with keys on to wear, that are clearly there to advertise to other businesses that it is him bringing in people from our of town.I would suggest taking the free option of camping in the city park instead. Enjoy the outside and spend the money on food and beer instead.
Great place to take your bike. Your treated as a friend and not given the run around. Well worth it. They will dot sell you something you dont need.
This is probably the raddest bike shop Ive ever visited. The owners are incredibly friendly, and clearly love what theyre doing. I stayed in the touring cyclist bike hostel, and I can safely say it was one the most comfortable nights on the TransAm so far. I watched James work late into the night and early in the morning to get a couple tourers bikes up and running on schedule.Thank you Newton Bike Shop!
First of all, this review is not based on their ability to take care of bikes. Everything that I saw at this very nice looking shop, including the one bike that they tuned up for us, seems top notch. It is our experience with the shop that this low rating is based on. It started with a phone call, after finding them on the web, and asking about how long repair would take on 3 kids bikes - just fixing tires and tuning up. She said they probably couldnt do them same day, but just to bring them in, which we did. The 3 bikes were looked over and analyzed (again, they are definitely experts on bikes - not debating that) - they wrote up orders on the bikes that surprised me, as far as as much that needed to be done and how much it would cost, but we agreed with it and went with it. She then told us that it might take up to a week which we agreed on. When we hadnt heard from the shop in about a week and a half, we called and got a message that they werent taking calls, were over busy, and theyd call customers if there was any issues. We went with that and another week passed. We tried to call again and this time just got an away from the phone message, but the mailbox was full so still no way to communicate. Today, I called when shop opened, over 3 weeks since wed left the bikes and talked to the very kind lady of the shop. She said they had fixed one of our bikes, but had on it a list to call us because they had determined the other 2 would cost more to fix than they were worth. I asked if we could PLEASE at least just fix the tires on those and could we PLEASE get our bikes back. She agreed and called me at 5pm that they were done and we went to pick them up. I paid and after when they were bringing bikes out, I wanted them to know how disappointed we were with the lack of communication during this and the fact that we had to be the one to finally get them on the phone and of course, only one of the bikes were fixed. The man of the shop heard me say this and told me that they were just trying to save me money (by not fixing the bikes for large fees) - I tried to explain that I did appreciate them not doing work that would have been more expensive than the bikes (though we specifically had this conversation when they took the bikes in and were assured that these bikes were worth the work), but the problem was the 3 weeks with no contact and no bikes and was told by the man of the shop, this is why I dont like doing business with the public as he angrily walked one of my bikes to the door...I guess I got put into the category of difficult customer, even though I feel I politely shared my problem and I feel we were greatly mistreated by the way the shop handled what they had agreed to do for us. Thus, this review....
Great shop. James did a quick service for a very reasonable price.
As a member of the 2018 Trans Am Bike Race, Ive got to say that I was extremely disappointed and appalled by the behavior of the owner James while I stayed there for a few hours in June. He decided to go on an unhinged and unprompted rant about all the people ruining this race from Instagram cyclists to the very producer of the Inspired to Ride movie Mike Dion, accusing several racers of cheating, bemoaning anyone who takes donations from the internet (which is absurdly hypocritical considering James took thousands from Kickstarter that he will never pay back!!), and he capped it off by blaming a fallen cyclist for his own death.Ive spoken with several other racers about James being completely rude and disrespectful for no reason at all.As for mechanical work, sometimes its fine but it seems to be very rushed and shoddy work. A day after leaving the shop I had to fix another racers shifting as his derailers were all over the place. NBS actually made his shifting worse than when he arrived! I know this happened to a couple other racers as well.It is my hope that the race course is diverted away from Newton in the future so racers dont have to be subjected to James negativity.
Stopped while riding my bike cross country......fantastic owners and wrench. This is what every bike shop in the country should aspire to be
Awesome people! Highly recommend this small town business.
The community is lucky to have a great bike shop.
Great service, knowledgeable!! Thanks for fixing me up so I can bike tomorrow!
