We did a double date here to brew beer as part of my boyfriends birthday gift from a friend. We enjoyed a great lunch on the first visit in between trips to the kettle to add different ingredients to our beer at the various stages of brewing. John guided us through the entire process and was awesome. He taught us so much about the brew process and all of the ingredients. He let us sniff and sample and gave us suggestions based on the recipe we chose. Prepare to be there for a few hours the day you brew, especially if like us you want to drink a few while having lunch. We went back 2 weeks later to pick up our beer and again have lunch. The food was once again excellent and we hung out for a little while before we started bottling. Once we were ready to get started they brought us over a little sample of our beer to try and then led us over to the bottling area. One of the bartenders taught us how to bottle the beer and seal them and then left us to our own devices. We all took turns bottling and sealing our beer and ended up with about 75 bottles. They let you create custom labels ahead of time that are shipped there for you to place on your bottles, unfortunately ours had not arrived and they were going to have to reorder them. They said they would ship them directly to us since were about an hour away, but that was only a mild inconvenience. Overall we had a great time and I highly recommend this for a group of friends. Weve already talked about going back with other friends to do the brewing process again. It might seem a little pricey upfront, but its well worth it. The atmosphere is great and its casual, but well designed and the food is great.
Really enjoyed first trip to Hopsters. It has been on my list of places to check out for a while. Hopsters is a combination Brewpub/brew your own beer. Didnt brew any beer on this trip but it was fun watching those who were and talking to the brewers. Had a flight and pretzel, mustard served with the pretzel was a highlight. Hopsters is focusing on providing solid New England style IPAs that are accessible...accessible being key...located in Newton with ample weekend parking everything I saw and tasted convinces me they delivered on this goal. Make sure to try the Newtonian, would have to be their flagship New England IPA in my book. Definitely considering going back to brew!
They have a pretty decent beer selection, a little pricey for the food options but considering its Newton its to be expected. Music/atmosphere was a little loud so you couldnt hear yourself. I was instantly frustrated that when you enter there was minimal staff to assist you. to help everyone out you do not seat yourself even at the bar. Not sure if its just because it was a little busy that no one had staffed the front.
Hopsters bartender Mercedes changed my receipt to tip herself more. Not only is this stealing, but its hilarious that she wanted a bigger tip. I ordered six carryout beers ($42 for 6 beers at hopsters). It wasnt ready when I got there. My contact-less pickup became me getting my own beer out of the fridge and paying at the bar. After failing at every level, Hopsters bartender then added a $9.75 tip for herself!
Been waiting to try this place, and it didn’t disappoint! Great food, drinks, and the staff did a great job keeping the place socially distant and safe. Our server Mark was awesome! We will be back.
The food and beer sangrias were so good, and our servers were amazing. Only taking one star off because (I’m not sure if this was the owner or some other patron) a guy at the bar loudly said “once these 2 d-bags leave” referring to my friend and me. Kinda weird, not the nicest thing to say about someone in public, def not cool if that was the owner or manager. But still a fan of this place!
Was a great, smaller, but not overcrowded atmosphere even though it was a Saturday night. Food was quite good, beer too but the service was the best part. Our server and host Parker was awesome and really down to earth while being attentive. Seriously a good dude, give the man a raise!
My daughters took me there for my birthday to brew some Irish Ale. We had a ton of fun. Its a great pub with guys that really know beer. Tim went out of his way to be sure that we had a good time. Everyone there was great and so was the beer. I highly recommend Hopsters in Newton.
Great beer, particularly the beer sangria. Love their pepperoni pizza and cherry sour. Impossible burger was too tonight too.
Great beers and generous portions for food! I got the Cubano and hubby got the Hopsters burger - both were delicious. Definitely try the Newtonian - it was the highlight of the two flights we got. The taproom itself has a very fun, kinda hipster vibe. We will definitely be back.
Staff have been wonderful and recognized us after only a few visits. Tim is great! Every new batch is just a little different, making for an interesting drinking experience every time, plus they rotate beers more frequently now than previously. A little pricey BUT found out only today (after visiting for 4 months) that they use all organic ingredients! :) Understandably, it gets very loud on Fridays and Saturdays, so visit on other days for a quieter experience.
Great beer, burger, and owners. We will be coming back soon!
Amazing team always a pleasure to talk to and get to know. Take great care of each guest they have. Food is also stellar way above most spots in this area for dinner and lunch soon!
I went to hopsters to see my friends duo band play at the Newton location a month or so ago. Seven of us went to see our friend perform and we bought drinks and food as we had done at this establishment before. The waitress was legitimately so drugged out or drunk or both and it took No less than 2 hours to get our food. She took my drink, which was half full, simply because she was so compromised she didnt know what she was doing. The table next to us was incredulous that she was still standing--truly that bad. A number of us complained to the manager, Geri, who was incredibly unprofessional and rude and continued to make excuses for this girl. She did not care about her customers experience in the least. She stated that the waitress couldnt have been drunk because she was sober for a year and that her mother watches her. It was pointless to complain. Outrageous behavior for a manager. Further, a number of people at the table knew of other people who had quit Hopsters, claiming the environment is toxic and there was a problem w/ drugs. To top it off, my friend who is the lead singer of the duo had repeatedly asked Geri for payment for the 3 hours that she worked which was $300. When Geri got back to her finally, She claimed that the work phone was off and she didnt get the messages and proceeded to reem my friend telling her that a lot of people have it much worse than she does. My friend had done many gigs in Newton and the Boston location as well. Long story short, shes not paying my friend for the work she did. And the truth is I considered writing a review earlier when this happened but decided against it because my friend still had a couple more gigs at this establishment but I can see from the other reviews that other people have had a less than pleasant experience at Hopsters as well. Seems like Hopsters reputation precedes it, and understandably so
Great experience here brewing my own beer with some friends. The staff was super friendly and walked us though everything. Food and drink is great too!
Even though this place is on the pricier side, the atmosphere, selection of great beers, and tasty food definitely make up for it. With a good amount of the brewing done in house, the place is filled with a sweet aroma, adding to the overall experience. Not the best place to come on a budget, but if youre looking to treat yourself and some friends to a good time on payday, look no further.
Average food; amazing craft beer! A great selection as well so it’s sure to please everyone in a large group. Nice ambiance to sit and chat or watch the game. Great staff & service to boot!
Great time, great beer. Love the game room
Good music. Great food. Awesome staff. Decent beer. Sweet ambiance.
Went to a google private event there, and one of the best events I ever been to. The place is small but has an open environment. The appetizer food was delicious, and I sampled a few beers, the red wine and a mix vodka drink, have to say I loved them all. I would highly recommend everyone to check the place out and brew your own beers! Staff is super friendly, we all had a great time.
Good food. Fair price. Eclectic home brews.
THE BEST of THE BEST!!!!!!!!!they make their own beer. The taste is authentic. What I love is the color & bitterness chart on the wall that tells you exactly how beers match up, and although I know what I usually drink, this chart helps to be a little more experimental.A little expensive, but a great experience is their brewing offer. Bring a few friends and make your own beer! The food is also locally sourced and very good. (the sizes and food offerings are non-standard; so if you are used to a typical pub, this is not exactly it)
Amazing craft beer selection. Thier burgers are delicious. The Brew your own beer service makes the place smell like a brewery.
An unusual place. You can brew your own beer here which is cool. They have lots of options for beer. The beer can be pretty good depending on what you order. Service can be touch-and-go.
Okay beer, okay food. Charged my credit card for $8 more than what I signed for. Didn’t save the receipt so I cannot challenge the charge. Don’t eat/drink here unless you want to pay over $10 per beer for average beer. My coworkers and I will be taking our happy hours elsewhere.
Great 🍺 and people. Went as a group and brewed 5 batches. Food was good and we all had a lot of fun. Highly recommend.
Excellent knowledgeable staff. Cool spot with great food and some really well made and thought out beers. Looking forward to going back.
I’ve been in twice now. Overall the experiences were great, but both times a man who appears to be the owner has made things weird. He has been visibly intoxicated and going behind the bar. You can tell that the staff is uncomfortable and when he asked me if I wanted another drink I felt uncomfortable. Bartenders were great... creepy drunk owner, not so great. It will definitely come to mind when I think about returning.
Beer was really good, atmosphere was neat with lots of cool lighting and Im pretty sure they offer classes to teach you and some friends how to brew.
One of my favorite bars in the area. The beer selection is diverse and solid, and though the food is worth a pretty penny it is every bit as satisfying as it costs. Brewing here is blast, Ive brewed two batches in the last two years and each one has been incredible as well as the service from the staff. Hands down, I would recommend this bar to anyone in the Newton / Watertown area or Beyond
Deliciously smooth beers. You can smell the brewing process throughout your meal. Food was good. A touch pricey (think $1-2 each thing) but worth it.
We came here this morning for the first half of the brewing process and had a great time. When we arrived we were the only people brewing and we were presented with a beer list where we could choose the beer to brew. As we began, Nolan (our beer genius) helped us follow our recipe and gave us explanations of the ingredients we were using. He helped us understand the process and helped us add ingredients at the correct time. While we were waiting for one of the stages, he gave us a full tour of the brewery which was very interesting. We didnt try any of the food while we were there but the flatbreads looked very good as well as the salads.
Amazing beer and food (try the flatbread pizzas)! The assortment of beers brewed in house combined with the local beers that they bring in make for an awesome experience worth every penny. Add on to that the fact that you get to brew your own beer (pretty much any kind you can think of) with the help of expert brewers and you definitely have a winning combination.Additionally, staff is extremely nice and knowledgeable on the beers giving great recommendations based on what you normally like. All this adds to a great energy that makes you feel happy and welcome. A must visit anytime youre in the area or to just give you a change of pace from the norm.
Great stop for choice beer and snakers. Hop off the pike on the Newton exit and you are there
Some great New England style IPAs, hazy, julicy....Flight of IPAs: Newtonian, Comit Citra, Comit Mosaic...great burger too!
Cool and creative environment for the crafty adult who likes to consume heavier ales without the hassle of having a home brew kit. They brewmasters are there to take you every step of the way from ingredients to alcohol percentage to aromas and labeling. The price is decent for a large group, great idea for a birthday party or fundraiser. Not conveniently located to public transportation but easy to drive to right off pike.
Awesome place ! Waitress was so nice! Being from NY I will def. Visit again . Beer was on point.
Great experience crafting a home brew with the help of experts and all the right equipment. Really enjoyed the experience!
Brewing beer together here makes for a good group activity. The food is OK, too. The scheduling process could be better.
This place is amazing! If you love craft beer and having fun, you will not want to miss checking this place out. From the moment we walked in, the staff was extremely friendly and very attentive. Our group made two reservations to brew our own beer. That means we were making two different beers. We were set up with our own brew master (Hugh was awesome!) who took us through the process of making our own beer. Their list of options was extensive and the most difficult part of the night was making the decision as to which kind to make. You can also add a personal touch to what they have the menu (change the type/amount of an ingredient or add an ingredient). They will offer suggestions, explain why something is a good idea and deter you from doing something completely horrifying and against everything they stand for. After all, you can drink craft brews while you make your own brew, Someone has to be the responsible one!You are involved in every step of the process. The brew master is there to walk you through measuring, pouring, mixing, and waiting. Waiting is cool because you get to drink and try their seasonal craft beers up on their board. Food is also available along with liquors from local distilleries. The ladies made a Vanilla Bourbon Barrel Stout (we added a maple twist, a play off of maple smoked bourbon that is out there) and the guys made a very hoppy IPA (they requested a hops substitution to mimic the flavor of one of their favorite west coast craft beers). While we were making our brews, we were checking out what others were making and chatting with other groups. This reminded me of what you do when you are in a cooking class. It was such a blast! We will go back in 2 weeks to bottle and label our beers. At the end of the night, Lee (the co-owner) came out to say hi and see how everything went. Hes a really nice guy and really proud of his business (as he should be). We were really psyched to get to know more about the business and that it is a small local business, not a large chain. Just made it feel all that more unique and special. We are already planning on returning for birthday celebrations for family members and will just hop on in for a drink from time to time. This place is totally worth checking out!
Outstanding help. Dan is the best! Truly loves the craft and people! Excellent!
We live a block away and used to come here a lot, but one of the managers cut us off on a Friday after four beers and two waters in four hours to get the table. There were no customers waiting and no reservations. I will not be back because of Danielle. Our server was nice, but Danielle ruined the experience for myself and my friends, coworkers, and family with her rudeness. Sorry to turn against my former neighborhood favorite.
Fantastic brewery you can enjoy your own brew and share that brew with your friends, they will be happy and admire you ! Best home brew in the greater Boston area, no other place can compare.
Came here for a Google Local event, which rented out the entire establishment. Ive run by the location many times for long training runs and been curious. Great friendly staff. Nice selection of house beers, but with a very small capacity, brews will run out. Had cured meats, cheeses, flatbreads, fried mac n cheese balls, and a salad bar - solid food selections. The highlight of the place is the DIY brews - they have a bunch of pots that people can work at and craft your own brew, and then come back for bottling.
Good beer yummy food. Like the visible brew system.
Full menu now! Burgers, steak tips, pizza, salads! Unreal beer that suits any taste. Gives trillium a run for their money.
Awesome place, good vibes! Great beer, great service!
I also came here for a Google event last night. Again they rented out the entire facility. The craft beers are amazing, I had I believe the name was the foolhardy which is a dark stout beer almost like a Guinness with a slightly creamier texture with a slight hint of chocolate. I also tried the Lighter summer shandy version unfortunately I can not remember the name. it was delicious. There are several house beer selections which I would of loved to sample all,...but, alas, I had to drive. We were served several items of food from cheese and breads, veggies and hummus, an awesome salad spread, to nachos & deep fried Mac n Cheese (highly recommend) and fantastic flatbread pizza, ( I had the pesto which was amazing)To top the night we got to help brew Comet IPA by adding Hops to the mixture. The facility itself has for a fee a make it yourself package where you can brew your own batch of craft beer and then return when it is complete for bottling and to take home.If you are looking for a different experience this place is for you
Took my beer aficionado buddy to Hopsters for his birthday last month and truly enjoyed our first experience at there with fabulous brew and delicious local food! We sat at the bar and had a great chat with the bartender, discovering that, in addition to great beer and food, Hopsters has personable, knowledgeable employees as well. Very cool!
Solid meh experience all around. Needs to learn how plates work and get rid of the wobbly tables. Serving food on oversized boards that dont fit on the tables is a stupid idea.
Beer and food was okay. Service was extremely slow (I think due to understaffing). One of the beers I ordered tasted like it had bleach in it, I asked if I could swap it for a different one. They said sure and “swapped” it. I returned the full beer but was charged for it at the end. I asked to not be charged for the beer I did not drink. I was told “you ordered it” and they refused to remove the charge. When we asked for a box for our leftovers we were given the takeout box from a different table that appeared to not have used theirs 🤢
Great place! Excellent beer, food and service.
I came with my friends Sunday night at 11 pm, and the doors were locked even though both Google and the website say its open until midnight. What a disappointment.
We brought a group of 27 guys to Hopsters to brew 5 different beers last month. Our initial experience was pleasant enough, with great micro brews from local suppliers on tap, and decent pizzas for appetizers. Needless to say we spent over $1300 on the event, plus whatever was purchased by individuals at the bar. We had scheduled the return trip to bottle our creations 5 weeks later, only to be told the day of that our beer wasnt ready on a Thursday. That forced us to reschedule at the last minute to the following Sunday evening, which was problematic for several reasons. After bottling was complete, and more money was spent, we realized that at least 3 of the 5 beers were awful, almost flat with no carbonation! We expressed our discontent to the owner, hoping there would be some gesture of good will or customer service, only to be told that we didnt know what we were talking about, and well agree to disagree. Very poor response, and very poor tasting beer, as well! We will certainly NOT be back, nor would we recommend the place to any of our friends.Too bad, Mr. Cooper, but you blew your chance at redemption with our group.
Food, atmosphere, service.. all great... But the beer wasnt cold? A little disappointing
Attentive bartender and Good beer. Ill be back tomorrow.
The beer was ok, definitely something off, Im not sure the mashing temps are right but the pizza is really good
Had five beers in total and was not pleased. However, their cocktails are nice
+great food selection+brew your own beer option is great for groups+full bar-in-house beers learn towards heavy IPAs.
Awesome place to have a beer or to brew a beer.
Great food and even better beer!
Place for EXCELLENT brew & delicious flatbreads
Good burgers an beer.
Great selection, a little pricey. The self-brew seems really cool.
Staff is great and very friendly, and the beer is tasty.
Good beer selection / friendly staff even during peak times / tasty food options / Wi-Fi for a working dinner
Had a great experience, staff was very helpful and beer tasted great. Got rave reviews from everyone that tried it.
Great brews, nice ambiance, good crowd.
9pm on a Stanley cup final Sunday. No more apps and closing at 10. Kind of disappointed. Also kind of an understatement.
Goog food awesome beer
Great food and beer
Great place, loved it.
Enjoyed the beers.
Love the beer!
Okay food, fruity beers, and under staffed
The food sucks. The beer sucks. The whiskey sucks. Stay away so I can get a seat.
Excellent
We fell by chance x a detour of traffic. Thank God that happened. We are in a corner with delicious beers that make the ipa and the double incredible. For the best of all, spectacular attention from all the staff !!! SUPER RECOMMENDED
