I had their Reuben, which is a modified pastrami (thick cut and giving serious corned beef vibes!) and coleslaw sandwich on a bagel. My wife had the French scramble with a vegetarian modification. My daughter had the blueberry pancakes. The food was great. Very personable service! Very kind, attentive, and timely. The Devils Backbone lager was fresh too. Coffee was great, and the iced tea was quite nice (though they ran out, sadly!). Our server seemed a bit nervous with us at first (Im kind of an ugly lug, to be fair.), but took great care of us. Good, young vibe, in a neighborhood experience. Keep it up, team!
I guess its too early to leave a review on Grub hub directly for my order this morning, but I wanted to express how great this food was. Ive been incredibly disappointed by the options for breakfast in Norfolk time-and-time again and now I feel like Ive found the holy grail. I was expecting something entirely mediocre when I ordered the avocado burrito and hashbrowns (a meal I saw as just getting me through the work morning) but I was completely wrong. Great-size portion, incredibly flavorful, fresh, and just has renewed my hope for a breakfast spot in the area. Thank you so so much for making a dull morning much better with this meal
I can’t speak for the food because we never got ours, although the few tables we did see with food looked good. We waited over an hour only to see people continually coming to get huge to go orders and barely anyone in the dining room get served. One table would get served and they would be fully done eating and have their check ready to leave before the next table even got food. It was wild and not worth our time to wait, we finally just paid for drinks and left. Not sure why they don’t limit their seating or stop taking to go orders but clearly they prioritize take-out over people dining at the restaurant.
Tremendous cafe, I stopped in for breakfast and had a seat at the bar, ordered the special of the day which was an Apple Crumble Waffle as well as a side of the fruit salad. The waffle had warm apple slices with cinnamon and powdered sugar with a generous amount of butter and syrup; the fruit salad was fresh with strawberries, pineapple and blueberries. Lauren and the rest of the staff were very friendly, I will gladly come back again!
Starving Artist Cafe is one of my FAVORITE places to visit for coffee and dessert or for a delicious brunch! They have amazing art created by local artist on display for sale and cuisine presented as edible art! Chic, relaxing atmosphere and a warm, welcoming staff. 5-stars!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Stopped in on a whim. The service was great and the Eggs Benedict was great. I will definitely be stopping in again. They also give military discount for those who are looking!
I ate an egg Benedict and I got food posioning after eating here. I would not recommend this place at all, I much rather starve to death than eat here again.
This is the worst experience I have had at a restaurant in years. Food is fine but the service was atrocious. We ordered and waited for almost an hour before the waitress told us that they had accidentally not put in our order to the system. Then they said they would move up our order to the top of the list for priority, yet we waited another half hour as plates of food continually came out to other tables. Then when we asked for the food to go since we no longer had time to eat, they told us they were putting the food together and it still took an unacceptable amount of time to actually give us the food (and in the meantime since we thought the food was coming out soon, they took our cards and charged us so we couldn’t walk out). I wanted to bash my head against the table the experience was so frustrating and felt hoodwinked into staying.

Keep messing up my order and they dont even fix it or apologize smh

Excellent breakfast and nice atmosphere. The sausage gravy and biscuits was very good. Definitely would recommend
Small place that packs a punch. Food was unique and tasty! Great customer service. But the food is a bit pricey for how little is served
With the starving artist cafe dont just look at the menu and walk away, I did thankfully I was stopped and asked why did you leave I said I didnt really like the menu I was told you can interchange and have your own food made the way you want. I am so thankful that I didnt leave here. The food was incredible the atmosphere relaxing a perfect way to start the day. The food is beyond amazing a hint of moms love with a kick of spice. The atmosphere of mom loves you and have a good day. It is family owned and you can taste then compassion.
This place was great! I feel as if the negative wait reviews were just people being impatient and don’t know how good food works. Taysia and Hannah were extremely attentive and very polite. THEY NEED A RAISE!!!! First time here and i am DEFINITELY coming back.
Friendly, fast, efficient service. Menu has a nice variety. Great place to catch up with friends.
Cute little cafe, decent prices, and good coffee. Definitely would recommend ♪~(´ε` )
Food is always great as well as the service. Awesome little place that we love going to!
Great breakfast had the french scramble was delicious and quick. Staff very friendly service was great too
Quickly became my favorite brunch place. Everyone is super nice and there food is great.
Great breakfast. Pleasant staff.
Top notch food! Top notch service! Also hosts live music. Overall chill atmosphere!
The food was insanely delicious. Ordered a breakfast burrito special with a red pepper aioli. Fresh old fashioned hash browns with tasty herb seasoning. Lastly my personal favorite was the Biscuits and gravy. Im a Texan and when I tell you its good, it is. The quality of taste from this cafe is the shut up and take my money level. I will be spoiling my girlfriend here soon.
Wonderful breakfast food, great, casual atmosphere! The best part? Even though its not on the menu they have gluten free bread! Guys, I had TOAST! And it was good toast too! Hard to find places that offer gluten free bread so this was a lovely surprise. I had a womlette which is an omelette made on a waffle iron. Fantastic! Our waitress was so pleasant and attentive. Cant wait to go back!
The atmosphere was trendy with a nice bar and television, but the staff was more distant than friendly, but that may have been my perception since there were several groups at tables discussing business ventures and not requiring as much attention. Menu items were appealing and my eggs with goat cheese and avocado was delicious. The server greets everyone with a mason jar of ice water and theres ample seating to accommodate small groups as well as seating on the patio out front.
Starving Artist Cafe is a true Norfolk Delight! I need to make a point to visit their more because I love visiting every time I am in the area. I love the art from local artists you can buy and even other little goodies that are handmade such as face masks. Their events are always a good time! Great place to grab a coffee and study or meet a friend for a drink.
Such a great place for brunch!! My husband and I took my parents here on a Sunday morning and it was the perfect atmosphere. Their food is so great and they have a cute little serve-your-own coffee bar with different coffee selections. Even though they were really busy, the service was still fast and attentive. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here and will definitely be back!
Friendly staff, and a comfortable atmosphere. The breakfast was delicious as well.
The food is fine, but not worth it. The service is super slow and 9 out of 10 times my order is missing items or just wrong (I order on Doordash and end up waiting almost 2 hours to not get my latte, which is $5 PLUS an extra $2 if I want flavor). Starving is right, Im giving up. This is why chains like Starbucks and Panera are taking over.
Friendly atmosphere. Staff very accommodating. Food was excellent
Great live music made the already awesome food taste even better. Service was spectacular too.
Our waitress was delightful. Food was good too!
Absolutely amazing little place with the most delightful wait staff. And as an artist myself I appreciate the local art on the wall(for sale at that) and the homley vibe that you get as soon as you walk through the door. I had the avocado burrito and a friend had the French dip with chips. Both were exquisitely crafted along with crisp mimosas to wash it down. One of the best brunches Ive had in a while.
I really enjoyed this little place! The prices were really good!. Service was great and food was good. Their fresh juice was refreshing. Lauren was our server and shes was great and super kind! Will definitely come back.
Delicious! Loved that they had the vegan sausage!
Good food. Very expensive for what you get.
Got to have a brunch there with a friend, ordered Avocado Burrito, Sweet Potato salad and Frittata. Our server Teja recommended the two out of three, we weren’t planning to get the salad but that lavender lemon dressing got our attention. Teja brewed some fresh decaf coffee for me which I really appreciated. She was very hospitable and attentive- kept our waters full. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and all the food! Afterwards, we wanted to check out their Backyard and there we got to meet Chef Nate who was a real delight to talk to. He let us know about color themed dinners they do and the Waffle of the week that changes every weekend. My friend and I cannot wait to go back!
I love this place. Its one of those restaurants that I like to take people when Im showing them around Norfolk. A highlight with everyone and good converstaion topic is the art they display. Its all for sale so not only does it change frequently, it helps the community. The breakfast menu has everything from eggs to pancakes, muffins and bagels. The coffee is good and they have specialty drinks and tea too like a coffee shop would. I dont remember if it was juice or mimosas but if they dont have mimosas the difference was unmemorable for me.The servers are always friendly and even made suggestions when I was undecided. And a perk since Covid-19 happened is that they have outdoor seating.
This morning was my first time visiting Starving Artist Cafe. I dont normally write reviews. However, I was WOWd by the atmosphere, acknowledged as I walked in the door, and fortunately, a table was available, so I sat down quickly. Cristie was quick with her service, and very friendly. I also was honored to meet the owner Kim, her customer service, is over the top.Oh, and the food, fantastic, I consider myself a simple person, but I had the French Scramble, except I substituted the scrambled for over-easy eggs. English muffin, 2 strips of bacon, and their house hot sauce is delicious too.Ill definitely be back, I highly recommend :)
Food, atmosphere, service and prices where great.
Excellent restaurant for a sontera person or with family I recommend it excellent restaurant
Amazing food, beautiful art, super friendly staff
Perfect spot to visit for a nice morning start!! Food, restaurant and staff are extremely awesome.Waitress Lindsay was just as awesome.
The best French style eggs I have ever had. Soup of the days was awesome. I will be back.
I really enjoyed this little place! The prices were really good!. Service was great and food was good. Their fresh juice was refreshing. Lauren was our server and shes was great and super kind! Will definitely come back.
Wonderful environment, amazing staff and great food
Amazing eggs benny. Relaxed vibe. Friendly service. Perfect break from driving.
Monte Cristo was awesome.
The vegan breakfast was goodt lol

The best place for breakfast that we went to this week. We went to multiple places (at least 10) in Norfolk & VA beach, but this had the best food out of them all. The French Scramble & SA burrito were GREAT. Mimosas & coffee were so yummy. Most importantly, the staff were incredibly kind. The food was great, but the staff made it even more worth the while. They made celebrating our honeymoon fun!
Awesome spot! Great food, excellent service, cool ambiance
Amazing food even better prices will be back very soon!
I ordered a simple bagel sandwich that they still made wrong. The wait was long for only 3 tables of guests and there are limited choices.
Ive been going to this Cafe for several years, and unlike many places, it has remained my favorite place to eat! The food is undeniably delicious - any item on the menu is just wonderful. The staff and service are just as great as the food. YOU HAVE TO TRY IT, YALL!
The food and atmosphere was top notch!! They will have a customer for life!!#Illbeback#delicious#regularcustomer
Had high hopes for this place. Our server was rude. I wish I would have gotten her name. I was seated with 3 other individuals. They all received their food in a timely fashion. My food did not come out for another 20 minutes. When, I finally received my meal, it was some hillbilly deep fried pancakes. My hillbilly deep fried pancakes were supposed to be French toast. The waitress used fowl language in front of us and abruptly left to pick something else up for another customer. I would not recommend this as a family friendly establishment.
Great service, great vibe, great food....you can feel the love in the food!
I loved this place!!! Its a whole vibe...food was great and I had an amazing Bloody Mary that started my day off right!!! I will definitely be making more memories here!!!
We always love going to eat at Starving Artist. Had an awesome walk to the restaurant, enjoyed the 80degree weather eating outside and had an excellent lunch with the family.😁😏
I never do reviews but may I say, this placed deserved one. My first time here so I didn’t know what to expect. The owner and our server were so nice. I was looking at a cookbook and the owner came over and talked with us about it. She told us about their special and let me tell you, it was one of the best things I’ve had. Lattes, mimosas (strawberry gelato mimosa, um what?!), entrees and appetizer were unbelievable. The only bad thing I have to say was my eggs on the Benedict were over cooked. Thanks again for everything. I will now be a new regular
We were treated with smiling faces and our server Lauren treated us like family. We enjoyed the food, atmosphere, and the hospitality. Not to mention, the bloody Mary’s and mimosas are the best in town! Be Sure to check them out! We will most definitely be returning customers.

Love this place! It has been a while since we have been there, we are going to correct that. I had the homemade beef and cabbage soup, it was excellent! Also had the hot pastrami sandwich, perfect size and great flavor! My wife had the chicken Cobb, fresh and delish!! Mac and cheese made with smoked Gouda, outstanding!! Some of the best espresso I have had! Great service!! Highly recommend!!
The atmosphere was so nice, as well as the food it was very good had the starving artist burrito everything exceeded expectations and I will definitely be returning.
Im so glad we finally went into this quaint cafe. The food was very good and their service was exemplary!
Amazing service, great food, and awesome price!
Food and service is excellent! The artwork displayed seems to be local and some potentially for sale. Would recommend coffee with the Starving Artist Burrito 🌯
Good food at a good price. The fruit side was surprisingly good quality (pineapple, strawberries, blueberries).
My husband and I were suffering from cabin fever so we went to Norfolk and found the cafe on Colley Avenue. We parked in front of the restaurant and they were serving brunch on the patio. I have mobility problems and a waitress noticed and came to the car and offered assistance. Unusual kindness! Our waitress was a young woman, Anntionette. Delightful, very personable and very attentive. I ate Eggs Benedict which were delicious. You must try the gelato mimosas. Different and very refreshing. Total experience was wonderful.
It is THE most AWESOME-EST place to go have brunch. Or to have a drink and relax in good company. The food is tk die for.
Good food
Staff was very kind and attentive. Place was packed for late brunch. Nice decor and layout, cozy atmosphere. They messed up my order but I got it comped for free. They kept checking in on our drinks and apologized a lot. Ill definitely try to come back and sample other items on the menu!
My girlfriend and I went here the other day for breakfast, we loved it! Such a cute welcoming place. Customer service was excellent and friendly! Definitely would recommend going there!
Chef Nate knock the menu out the park every time I go in to visit the Starving Artist Crew!
I just had an amazing salad! This place is friendly and the owner is very kind. She came up to our table and introduced herself. The kitchen staff was quick and the young lady behind the bar was professional unfortunately I ate my salad too fast to take a picture. Trust me, its worth going.
We stopped in for lunch on our way to an afternoon show. It was a fun to watch all the regulars come and go, clearly a popular place that gets plenty of repeat business. Art on the walls is for sale. Lunch was tasty, service was friendly. Unisex restroom was nicely maintained and displayed flyers and other evidence of this being a community centered place.
The place is great really. I just was not impressed with the food. I love that you got to self serve your one coffee! The art was priced very high. I had pancakes they taste like flour and water...
Found this gem last year and everything weve eaten has been delicious. Good food and good service!
Wonderful atmosphere, incredible food, and the friendliest staff you’ll find in Hampton Roads. This place is all about the community and it really shows. 10/10
Overpriced, coffee was terrible for 3 dollars. Wouldnt go there again.
Great food!
Nice little coffee bar. Peaceful and very inviting. Local open mic was spectacular. The artist that go to ODU are just out right amazing.
