The best breakfast I have had in a long time. My niece and I both ordered breakfast. The over easy eggs were perfect (and we are both very picky with the eggs!) Hash browns were crispy, veggies were done right.......the food was great. Our servers name was Laura, she was very friendly, funny and on her job! Would definitely recommend this restaurant. If I ever get back up this way, this is where I will eat!

It was wonderful when it was safe to dine in a couple of years ago. Take out, however, does not appear to be a strength. Two orders had a side and sauce missing. The third order the burger was not made to request and ketchup was included when it was specifically requested to be left out. They sure made a good bit of extra profit off of us.

This place was off the chain for us. Excellent quality in the food. The portion sizes were perfect not too much and have to take some home. Homemade pies and cakes for after meal. Price reflected portion size. Everything is homemade here not frozen. Outstanding in everyway. Actually did not believe places like this still existed.πβ€
When we were deciding a place to eat, another review had said best breakfast in Owatonna hands down. that was our first clue on this place would be a good place to eat. the second hint was EVERY customer in that place had a huge gut. At that point i knew this was going to be a hot commodity of breakfast items. THEY DID NOT DISAPPOINT!
We usually always call in an order to go on Fridays around 5ish, always the usual and never disappointed. Order the meals a specific way and they always are rockstars. We always tip as well because its the right thing to do...theyre working hard making peoples meals so the people dont have to cook! The cheeseburger with extra pickles, no LTO, and crispy fries are always perfect. The fish dinner is tasty and delicious...tastes just like if we were dining in.
Great home cooking! Nothing fancy but the roast beef commercial sandwich has the best gravy and so yummy. Great selection of pies and great salads if looking for healthy option. Itβs kinda a hidden gem but donβt expect anything fancy itβs kinda like visiting grandmaβs kitchen for home cooking.
Basic good food. Hot beef sandwich (commercial as some call it) is just good comfort food. Delicious pie to top it off and a wonderful waitress.

Iβve been going to the Kernel with my grandparents since I was little. I love this place! The food is great, staff friendly, just lots of good memories.Be sure to try a slice of pie! Theyβre known for their delicious pies and they sell out around the holidays because people order pies for takeout for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The 80s diner gave me a feel that this could be something good. I ordered the turkey bacon melt in high hopes. While the bacon was delicious and it was served on a seeded bread, the turkey disappointed; It was deli slices from next door. It would have been great to see some shaved off pieces of turkey, just like they hopefully use for a turkey commercial.And do smarter seating. They made a community table out of a six top, and make the old folks walk all the way across the joint when tables closer could be use. I understand balencing servers, but not impressed.

My husband had a very good meal and stated he would go back. I on the other hand had a terrible meal. My cheeseburger was so burned it was not edible. When I told the waitress it was the worst hamburger I ever had, she said sorry and gave us our bill. They should have never charged me for the burger as it was uneaten. I would not go back to the Kernel again.

First time visiting your business today. Customer service is something to be desired. The hostess was rude and annoyed with me. The staff didnt appear to know what was going on. We just left and went somewhere else. I have no interest in spending my money somewhere if the employees cant at least be friendly and appreciate my business.
Food was good as usual, but took 40 minutes to get it. 4 tables that came in after us were served before us.

Great local restaurant! Stopped in for breakfast while traveling to Iowa. Everything was fresh. Homemade biscuits were tasty. We avoid the chains as much as possible and this place is the reason. It was busy with locals who the waitresses knew - which is always a good sign. We will stop in again.

As I have always liked the Kernel today is was not its usual great food. My three grandkids and I stopped for lunch. The bacon on my Bacon cheeseburger was under cooked, rubbery as was my grandsons with his pancake. All three malts were over killed with chocolate syrup..none finished theirs. The french toast was very dry, he didnt eat but three pieces. The decaf coffee was old..Ill try this place one more time and hope it goes back to its usual great food.was seriously a waste of 45.00..

This was a really fun place to go. The wait stuff were all very upbeat and outgoing. They were not upset about the large group that we brought. we had a business meeting here and I decided to order the burger and tater tots. It was fantastic and the tater tots were absolute heaven.

Some things just cant get any better. This is one good, old fashioned family restaurant where you can expect friendly service, a nice variety of menu items. Dont forget the fresh-baked pies and caramel rolls!
Very good atmosphere. My dad and brother are regulars there. The waitress remembered their drink orders and their usual food order. Was also served fairly fast.The portions are pretty decent for the price. I was too full for desert.Love the fact they have breakfast foods because those are my favorite meals.Very good place I highly recommend.Would love to see more Muffin choices though but its okay because I had toast instead.

Good selection on food with reasonable prices. The Gluten Free menu is not expansive, yet the options are meanwhile delicious. The mainstays for a restaurant of this sort; such as french fries, cheese curds, burgers and steaks, are all very good. The service is incredibly friendly, and the environment is adequate. Would recommend for anyone in the area who may have gluten insensitivity, or are craving American food.

I would definitely have given them a 4 or 5 if the bathrooms had not been so bad. There was something yellow dripping from the ceiling. This is an old place and Im pretty sure nothing has ever been done to the bathrooms. The food was great!

We were disappointed in our experience at the Kernel this evening. We were seated at 7:45pm. The waitress brought us our menus and told us there werent any mashed potatoes. I told the waitress that we came because my bride wanted mash potatoes and gravy. Asked my bride if we should go somewhere else. She said that she was sure she could find something. We ordered and had a decent meal.As we stopped to checkout before leaving, I asked the waitress if I should call in the future to make sure they had mashed potatoes. She said that we should just get here earlier because the meals with mashed potatoes end at 8pm. I told her we were seated at 7:45. She said we put them away 20 minutes early tonight.Seriously, the mashed potatoes would have still been warm when we ordered. It wouldnt have taken much effort to make them hot again.Disappointing customer service.

Have your pie and get some to go as well!This place has the best pies in the area.Also some pretty tasty soups.The decor is reminiscent of the 1960s, giving it a homely feeling.All and all, the menu is pretty good. Its like Perkins, but with a local vibe.Oh, and if youre into malts, they got some decent ones here.

Loved everything about this place - service, food, desserts. All excellent. Would recommend for those traveling. 9 of us ate here, all tried different desserts! Favorites were the pecan pie, lemon meringue, strawberry shortcake, and winner was pecan banana cream pie - with a pecan studded crust - delish! Food was great as well.
Wonderful home-style cooking and youll want to save room for a slice of pie... Or two! So many flavors of home-made pies to choose from. The price is right and staff are friendly and eager to please.
Good old diner. One of the few remaining places that one can get liver and onions or chicken fried steak or crispy corned beef hash. Dont expect anything fantastic and dont expect a low salt meal but its good reliable comfort food. And the beverage is included in the price of the meal.
