Over the course of decades of use the griddle becomes tempered by the flavor of the food cooked on it. That flavor is imparted into everything that is cooked on it. Thats one reason the flavor of their food is so scrumptious. You cant buy that flavor there is no chemical substitute its the flavor of experience you might say. Their prices are reasonable for the market and the best testimony are the lines that can develop on weekends at peak times. When you have people in line to get something they could easily get at Dennys down the street, theres a reason for that.

I was actually recommended this place by a few of the locals, and decided to try it out with my family one morning. The outdoor seating was nice and the staff was friendly. Food portions are nice and big so you will not leave hungry.Generally I can only compare this place to other breakfast places Ive eaten at in the past.Ordered myself the country fried steak. Im particular about my counrty/chicken fried steaks. Theyve varied from place to place from tender and delicious, to chewy and hamburger-like. This one was closer to the chewy hamburger end. I also normally get my eggs poached (like to break the yolk over the steak & hashbrowns.) Which is never really an issue at other places, but they wouldnt make them that way for me here so I had to settle with over easy.The bacon was a bit mixed. On one plate it was cooked perfectly, while another it was too crispy and hard. My wife also got an eggshell in her scrambled eggs.Im willing to give this place another chance someday but as far as first impressions go it was a little disappointing.

At least have a way to get cash onsite. I love having to run into scuzzy 711 to get cash instead of relaxing drinking my coffee

Wow. A really great breakfast. Breakfast burrito is HUGE. Filled with egg, flavorful chorizo, guacamole, sour cream and cheese. Enough to feed a family of four. I shouldve skipped lunch. Three others had biscuits and gravy. Why would you go from Alabama to California and expect great B&G? You dont or shouldnt. Its like going to a steak house and ordering fish... just dont. Other guy had the eggs bacon and toast. A ton of bacon, eggs done right. ✔

Burgers are delicious so is there breakfast they only take cash but its worth it

The oldest diner in Pleasant Hill, CA. I love diners. Not originally from Pleasant Hill, but I have frequent to this place and love their food. If you enjoy diner food and hearty meals, this is the place to come to!

Had a double cheeseburger, it was good. The french fries were well made, crunchy on the outside and soft center, not greasy.Next time I am going to try the breakfast burrito.They have weird hours. Cash only. No delivery. Prices seem little high.Everyone was wearing a mask.

I first came here with my boyfriend and it was really good..great service and the food was pretty good even though the prices were high. BUT DO NOT order to go. I got an eggs Benedict to go and my boyfriend picked it up. They forgot my drink, and two other things I ordered. Even though I paid for it. I didn’t mind that as much but when I opened my to go box I was shocked. They had put the box in a brown bag sideways so when I opened it all of the food was mixed together in the huge ball of gross looking food. The bread was soggy and it was already cold when when he had picked it up in the amount of time they said it would take. AND it was literally missing an egg on one side ???!!! It was absolutely disgusting.

First time back since pandemic and I was very disappointed. Food was marginal. chicken fried steak was undercooked and when questioned the waitress said...thats the way we do it! No apologies! Rude ordertaker! Meals served on paper plates with plastic forks. I tipped generously when I placed my order and paid... but then regretted i even tipped at all. Wont return. Sad to see this place that was so good...go downhill. Hope mgmt does something about it.

First time here and great experience! The service quick and attentive. Food is tasty and big portions. We got to sit in the back patio, which is covered and temperature regulated. Overall, solid dining spot.

We have a fantastic experience here. We went for breakfast. A little bit busy but worth waiting for.. Guys it’s simple breakfast,BUT it was SO good. I don’t know what they did. I cook same thing at home, but it doesn’t taste as good as this place. Excellent place for family, casual party..

Classic American restaurant, and they claim themselves as the oldest one in Pleasant Hill, too. Most choices on the menu we tried are decent. My favorites are philly cheese steak and country fried steak. The picture was a bay shrimp omelet though. The only thing to pick about is that CASH only.

Giant Chef is my favorite place to eat! Ive been going there for years, and its never disappointed! Their 1/4 pound cheeseburger is awesome, and the French fries that come with the combo are abundant! They have outside seating! I would definitely recommend them!

The best home cook meal

We used to eat there 3 times a week. The food is always good, the staff is so friendly they make you feel like family they would meet us at the table with our drinks we always had our food in 10 minutes or less. I cant wait until they can open for dine in service again we will be there for sure. We miss our favorite waitresses.

Great. Food was good (and hot). Janet was our waitress...... really good. Manager was friendly . All in all, a good experience. We took up a table for longer than we should have, but were not hurried, and got more coffee than I should have. Will return.

One of the only places that I can find a decent plate of biscuits and gravy. 9 out of 10 restaurants biscuits and gravy is a joke and an embarrassment. Its where the local go. Check em out.

Today was my first ever visit to Giant chef. It was a great place with great atmosphere friendly people and one of the owners even seated us at our table to chicken fried steak was the best I have ever had. Loved hope to go back often. Service was friendly and the food was fast.

Holy god, this place is magical.Best gravy in the land. Wait for breakfast is longer on weekends but always worth it. Excellent service everytime Ive gone; excellent prices; fresh and delicious food.Highly recommend.

Im not sure I want to let too many people know about this place because then the wait will be longer! What a hidden gem. Seriously the best breakfast Ive ever had in the East Bay EVER!. The service was outstanding and the food was on another level. Just make me a promise, be nice, the wait is long, be a good person, chill, it will be worth it!

Chicken fried steak was cooked well and was delicious. Staffs were attentive and they had provided a fast service. Prices were reasonable and they have a good menu.

The staff is lovely and accommodating, the food is plentiful and well priced. The only downside is that it is a cash-only location. be advised before going, if youre going during a popular meal hour, which might be all the time, there will be a wait. There is a little standing area outside, but nothing great in terms of seating. Enjoy your time, tip well and enjoy the atmosphere of a old school diner near DVC.

Overall it seemed like a nice diner. Excellent service. The reason for the low score was that my cheese steak sandwich had almost no flavor. On top of that, Giant Chef is cash only with minimal notice. All in all, the hassle this caused simply wasnt worth a bland sandwich.Probably wont return.

Okay, its not haute cuisine. Its an old-fashioned greasy-spoon diner. But its definitely one of the best of its kind -- and one of the last. The menu is breakfasts and sandwiches -- thats all. Its pure comfort food. The portions are generous. If that sounds good to you, youll love it. You can only pay with cash.

Ive been dining at Chef Burger since moving here in 1986 and bringing my son, then daughter in law, then 2 grandsons, then their girlfriend, and other family members and friends through the years. I love this place cause the food reminds me of home. Been thru remodels and upgrades and Ill continue to eat at this diner until Im no longer mobile. Big, big kudos to owners for maintaining excellent quality food and great service!!

Weve been going to this place 16-yrs and we Love it. Theyve had a few new faces come and go recently, some know what theyre doing others dont. 90% of the time you get great service and great food! We love to go in the evening when Chef Mario is on grill, our food is ALWAYS delicious and cooked to perfection when Mario cooks it. The veteran waitresses are Absolutely Fabulous and make you feel right at home.This is one of the best places to go for American food dishes and their amazing breakfasts are served all day!

I love Giant Chef!! Their portions are plenty and the prices are just right. The servers are constantly refilling your coffee cup. They only take cash, but thats not a problem. Their service, prices and portions wins it all.

Other than the bland personality that our waitress had...the food was outstanding to be modest ..always fresh quality food and in abundant supply...id have given 5 stars..but that lady was smug...lightweight almost rude...i almost told her something about herself...but I had my daughter with me so I must behave.

I love this place. Its the oldest diner in Pleasant Hill and for good reason. The place is always packed but the list moves very quickly and you get a table in no time. The food is delicious and always served fast and hot with plenty of letovers to take home. The waitress have been there for years and are super friendly and efficient. I make it a point to stop in for a meal when ever Im in the neighborhood.

This place is so good, way better than nations. Sometimes Ill drive from Richmond/Berkeley just to eat at this place. Classic dinner setting and family owned, sweet little old lady that works here is always there and ready to fill up my coffee when its low. Great service!

Giant Chef is one of those places that truly finds itself in a unique position. There are four owners that own the building. The idea is cash only; they dont take plastic. Different people show up on the day when the special is Prime Rib, Beef Stroganoff etc. The whole menu is good. The waitresses are great cause management is behind them. Right up the road is DVC so they will always have business...

Lots of characters eat here. The food is pretty great it is standard diner fare with some flare thrown in (try the herb chicken).Staff is friendly and attentive, coffee is decent, ambiance is awesome :). Make sure you bring cash, they dont take cards.

Comfort food at its best!Everything is made fresh. I ordered a deviled egg sandwich and asked how fresh it is. Server told me it is all made fresh for each individual order. It was perfect and very delicious.
