Coming soon….what a disappointment!I know I saw their sign in the window. I’d been waiting for weeks for the store to open, but soon discovered the age-old switch and bait had taken place. With Staples leaving Portage, the small shopping center seemed to have lost it’s anchor, although the Dollar Tree still held down it’s end of the block. I was elated to the sign in the window, “Harbor Freight”, one of my favorite stores, was coming to Portage. How great was that?I kept checking back and the signs were still there, there was merchandise in the store, it just wasn’t open. Weeks passed and my attention was diverted elsewhere, so when I drove by today and saw banners on each door that contained store hours, my heart skipped a beat. Could it really be open?I didn’t recognize the name near the top of the banners, “Fastenal”. I thought maybe it was a new brand of fittings or fasteners that was being featured at the store. Since it was so new, it did make sense that there wasn’t any store name above the entrance. I thought that would come soon.Entering the store I found it totally empty. No one to greet you as you entered, so I ambled down the aisles checking out the merchandise, only to hear a hello from a distance. The gentleman approached, asked me if he could help me find anything, to which I responded, “Just dropped in to see what you carry”, and he disappeared.I have always been interested in large diameter hole saws that can be attached to a drill, and noticed that they carried 2 brands, but were quite a ways away from each other. So I thought maybe there was something special about one of them and looked for the price label on the shelf. No price label, only a sku number. So I called out to the previous voice, and asked where were the prices? To may surprise, the answer was, there wasn’t any prices on the shelves or products because they would have to change the price if it went on sale. All anyone had to do was ask someone and they could give me the price or I could go online and look it up.Of course, everyone shops with their cell phones, and has Internet access to look up the price. Heaven forbid that there be more than one customer in the store at a time that wants to ask, “What’s the price?”On my way out of the store, I said to myself, this place isn’t long for this shopping center, unless it’s a front for something.Safely at home, I looked up the price of WD-40 at this store and at Wal-Mart, just down the street. I think I’ll go for the Wal-Mart price of $4.54, instead of the Fastenal price of $10.34 for the same size can of WD-40.Goodbye Fastenal. BTW there are 2 very good stores in Portage that carry as great line of nuts and bolts, one just down the street.
