If you are in to ham radios this is the place to go. Great people, great service. They have just about everything in stock and all the major radios are out on display so you can play with them. The only down side is the bottle return center is right next door, so you have to dodge the homeless and bums to get in to HRO.

The only local source for amateur radio equipment, accessories and literature. Store cashiers are helpful and knowledgeable about the products and operating conditions. Watch for double or triple sales on items throughout the year. The new store has more space for displaying equipment and more available parking out front. The HRO store is referred to as The Candy Store by many radio operators and enthusiasts.

New review: Since coming here after they allowed in person shopping, I have had very great experiences. Theyl shop is well organized and the staff is knowledgeable and willing to help. I have come here a few times now that its opened, and I know Ill 100% be a returning customer. I will be coming here for all or my radio needs. Very pleased with the in person experiences here. Thank you.Old review:Inquired about an antenna I was looking to buy, they told me it was out of stock. That was fine with me. I was trying to get an antenna quickly, so I asked about alternatives, and they showed me a similar antenna, similar price, same length. They told me it was in stock, so I ordered it on the website and went to pick it up, only to be told that they couldnt find it for some reason and had to order it from CA. Was hoping it wouldnt take long, but it seems it will take a few days. It pretty much defeated the purpose of buying an antenna online, as I could have gotten the one I originally wanted, and for cheaper, rather than the second option. Other than that, they were nice on the phone. A bit disappointed about that, but it happens. I will likely order from here again, but will be careful to make sure they have multiple in stock of the item I am looking for. I am in favor of supporting smaller businesses, rather than ordering everything in my life off of Amazon, but it sometimes it just makes it difficult to do that.Update: Was not given a tracking number and apparently neither were they. Apparently 4 days after the mess up my antenna was shipped. If Id have to wait a week I wouldve ordered it online and sent to my own house in the first place. The real kicker is Im still going to have to drive 35 minutes to their store since it is still technically a pickup order. After the initial call, they were not happy to work with me and made it very clear. Very unfortunate.

I love HRO! And I’ve probably had dealings with each and every location at one time or another. All the HRO staff are helpful in so many ways.... Taking orders over the phone, confirming shipments and which HRO they’ve been shipped from. Suggestions on which piece of gear will Bette suit my needs, and even technical support... Plus there prices are the same if not better than the competition..... Including Amazon!

I see a few not so hot reviews but it seems they are related to the crisis we are in. In my opinion people need to take stock in the current situation we are ALL in right now. The crew appears to be doing the best they can given what they are working with.

So I ordered one of the new TX-500 radios back in January, and called the next day to get a leadtime, since it was backordered - the man that answered the phone informed me that I was seventh in line for a unit, and that they would ship out lat February at the latest. March 1st comes and goes. I call back, now its unknown when I will get my radio COVID delays yada yada, so I email the manufacturer. I ask them if theyve been sending shipments to HRO - Yeah they already received a shipment of 50 radios on 2/15 and another is scheduled to arrive mid-March. Send them an email with this information, kindly asking that they advise on when I can expect a unit, and get told they wont have anything until mid-March. ...OK.... Well here we are! I have no idea whats going on here, maybe they dont either. The manufacturer made it clear they got products, 50 to be exact, and they themselves told me I was seventh in line. I get there are 9 locations, but 50 radios over 9 locations is 7 radios each. Well now its 3/19, no updates that the product was received, or that it shipped. No communication at all if I dont ask, email I sent with mfg response was straight out ignored until I pressed on it a week later with not response. If youre considering ordering from HRO online, Im telling you right now, do not waste your time. Once they have your cash, youll be in purgatory, there will be no communication, and youll come to find out some factory in Russia has a better picture of what theyre receiving and when than they do, and theyll have a different story every time you call or email. Its all so tiresome.

Reserved an IC-705 in December, which was confirmed by email. A few weeks ago I called for status on my order. I was told the radio would be available sometime between September and November. The person on the phone asked if I would like to pay now. I told him I would wait until they were ready to ship the radio. Today I called for another status check, and was told my order was cancelled, because I didn’t pay a few weeks ago. I asked the guy on the phone to confirm my order was cancelled because I didn’t pay previously. He confirmed that’s why it was cancelled. The Portland store never reached out to inform me about my order. I suppose if I hadn’t called for a status check, I would still be on the list. The Portland store doesn’t appear to value their customers!

I had purchased on line a vertical antenna but discovered that it wasnt what I needed. I decided to drive from Medford, Oregon, to Portland, to return the item in person so that I might shop for other Amateur Radio items I was hoping to be able to buy there. However, due to Covid restrictions, I was NOT allowed into their store at all, after a four hour drive there. The man in charge there was VERY unfriendly, didnt care that I took such a long drive to get there, charged me a re-stocking fee, but that part I DO understand. But I was sadly very disappointed in his apathy towards my long drive to find I was banned from the store. He said that I should have checked the website to see that they were closed. But, I had watched a video of a woman who was inviting me to the new store location instead, and there was no date on that video which I had watched. So I believed that the store was open. THE HRO store SHOULD have deleted the invitational video since they were so adamant about not letting a customer into their store.I AM personally done with HRO and will buy my gear from ANY other source than them now.

They are convenient. One salesman that always is there whenever I go in could use a personality transplant, not rude but borders on it. Guess thats what we get since theyre the only game in town. Business must be booming cause I understand that they are going to move to a bigger store down the road. If you need something $100 or more they ship directly to ones home for free. Love HRO, and have been dealing with them for years. My latest purchase (Yaesu FT-818 and accessories) came out to me from the Oregon store. Fast shipping and friendly staff over the telephone. All was right with my purchase! My only complaint ( And this is not aimed at HRO) is that they use shipping that allows the local Post Office to make the final delivery. United Parcel shipped my radio clear across the Country in 4 days! It took the local Post Office 3 days to deliver it the last mile! Wasted time on the phone, and an actual visit to the local PO to find out when delivery was going to take place...Please HRO, have United Parcel deliver 100% of the way! There killing your reputation for fast delivery!

Update: 7/21/2018I finally got my Technician and General license and needed an item so I thought I’d give them a call. They had the item in stock and were super friendly. I went to the store and was treated very professionally and I bought the original item I came in for, plus something extra. So, I’m revising my review. Maybe we both were having a bad day. I’ll definitely go back again and will update the review accordingly. I’m leaving the text of my original review as I wrote it but I would like to apologize for my rude comment.Original review:Jerks. Im studying for my Tech license and went in as I had questions about radios that supported APRS. I told them I was studying for the exam and if they could recommend a place to take it. The lady was nice but a jerk in a dirty NASA shirt suggested I just google it. He did hand me a pamphlet but I said since I was there I thought I could just ask them. I like supporting local places but these guys are rude. I can just goggle it, just like I can buy equipment online for less and not have to deal with people that dont want my business.

Three stars for their selection. It’s huge and they have just about everything you need to add on to your hobby or start one. With that said, two stars for a rude employee who felt it necessary to rant during the entire sale on the use of the radio I picked out and why he “disapproved” of said use. That kind of attitude is what kills this hobby as it slowly fades to being obsolete. Here’s a tip to the guys at HRO... sell me the product I am paying for and leave your personal opinion out of the sale. I may just take my business elsewhere next time to amazon, ham city or gigaparts. At least there I can spare myself to unwanted feedback.Oh and BTW, thanks for selling me the EXACT SAME mounting bracket for my new radio to which the guy insisted wouldn’t fit my new unit.
