Mill End is one of a kind fabric supply store, they have everything and then some. Sewing supplies too, youll need a couple of hours plus to explore this place. The store goes back many years and supplied Wool to the military during the war. They were the only manufacturer on the west coast. I will provide pictures after my next visit.

This place is huuuuuge! I imagine it has everything you could possibly need, if you knew where to look. I would have rated it five because of the big selection, but I had only one small thing to get and no clue where to look. I walked around for ten minutes looking confused, and the workers didn’t ask or notice my confusion. Finally, I just asked someone but felt dumb for not finding it, ha. I’d like to go again for future projects and explore around.

Fantastic store with the widest variety or fabrics and fittings. The staff is helpful and there are multiple cutting tables so there isnt much of a wait to get your fabric off the bolt. Pricing is decent - there are affordable fabrics along with pricier, high quality wools and silks. The building is so large that it is quite easy to follow social distancing.

I wanted to like this place, so bad. Coming from a state with a similar warehouse style fabric store, I thought shopping here would feel like a homecoming. Suffice it to say, I’ve never visited such a large fabric store and felt so limited and disappointed in selection. This store is outdated in all the worst ways, which is such a bummer, because there’s mucho money to be made in catering to the younger generations of modern sewists.I shopped for both quilting cottons, apparel fabric, a variety of notions and struggled to find anything quality, or what I needed. 100% cotton shirtings were ok, but otherwise most everything else was cheap poly or rayon blends, or completely overpriced.I also spent my time waiting for fabric to be cut wondering what I did to warrant so much attitude from the employee. In addition to her general annoyance at my existence, she (stone faces and unapologetic) slid my items across the counter towards me, launching them straight on the ground. Some of the yardage she cut had a large and obvious stain, and she was very sneaky about adding extra yardage to one of my tickets. If this is meant to be a deadstock warehouse, I’m shooketh, the prices are astronomical. I would describe Mill End as Joanne quality without the discounts. Sad to say I took my tiny lot for $50 and likely won’t be back.

A lot of options. What they dont have, or is low is stock, can sometimes be special ordered. So much better to buy online and be able to touch the fabric than take chances with an online-only store.

I hadnt been here for years. It dropped off my radar until recently when a friend and I were talking and realized there was a place where our needs intersected: The Mill End Store. My friend was redecorating following some renovations to her home, and I had taken up a new hobby and have interest in sewing and craft supplies, notions (zippers, backing, buttons, patterns, adhesives, kits, etc) upholstery supplies (batting, webbing, foam, etc.), and among other things, fabric. Oh boy, is there FABRIC. In fact, the Mill End Store has the largest display of fabric in the country. I spent half a day here browsing (and touching) a vast array from silk to suede, and spandex to sail cloth, burlap to brocade, and taffeta to twill. As my morning waned I reluctantly made my way from the remnant area past upholstery fabrics, the bridal department, sewing room supplies, the cutting tables, the phalanx of welcoming, courteous, helpful and knowledgable staff, (whew, almost to checkout), the designer collections, and the entrance to the in-house floor covering sister store, I realized there was an entire swath of the cavernous warehouse that I hadnt even been in! My companion and I havent scheduled our return trip to explore the areas we missed, but itll be soon; I spotted some tropical print oil cloth bolt ends thatll make amazing placemats.

The fabric counter has always been nice. But when I go to pay, is where I get a bad experience. I leave feeling unwanted. Yesterday I showed my competitor coupon of 20% off. Although my coupon said “20% off entire purchase”, I understand they only honor 20% one cut of fabric. The cashier told me “bummer” and she could not honor the 20% off a fabric cut. Since the coupon said entire purchase. (Wouldn’t that qualify her to give me 20% off one cut if I only purchased one item from joanns using that coupon it would be, in turn; 20% off one item). Before I even walked out the door the cashier was speaking to the other cashier about my transaction. She had the obvious intention to be unkind, just because she knew she could. To me, that felt degrading, and I am unsure if I will be back.

There are only a handful of independent fabric stores left in the Portland-metro area. There are other stores that have wonderful fabrics but there is no one with this level of variety. Only Mill End has fabrics for virtually every conceivable use including home decor, upholstery, outdoor, utility, bridal, crafts, quilting, active apparel, suiting/tailoring, costume, and general apparel sewing. They have an excellent range of both basic and high end fabrics. Woven or knit Silk, Wool (and felts), Linen, Cotton (try to find a weave or pattern they dont have), Rayon, Nylon, Polyester, Spandex, Courdura, Cane, Neoprene, Grasses, and tech fabrics are all well represented. Ive never special ordered anything from them but I know someone who has and they said it was easy. Their inventory of trim and beading is good but not remarkable. The notions section while well stocked, seems underwhelming in comparison to the fabric. They have an adequate amount of craft supplies (I was surprised and disappointed by the total lack of dyeing and fabric paints). I cannot recall if they carry yarns and floss for needle crafts. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable. In my opinion the strike a balance between some fabric stores that treat you like are a Saint Bernhard in an antique store and other stores that are so short staffed that it is almost impossible to find someone to take your money. If you love (or even like) fabric then Mill End is (one of) the best place(s) to shop.
