Mount Desert Island Ice Cream has five shops that are mostly located in Portland but they also have a location in the District of Columbia and one location in Japan! We tried the ice cream at this location for the first time and it was so tasty! They pride themselves on making small batch, high quality ice cream with a high ratio of butterfat and low air whipped inside. You can tell that they care about their ice cream just by eating it. The flavors were all delicious, the atmosphere is small and simple. They dont list all of their flavors on their wall so if you really want to see what they have youre just going to have to go inside and check it out. The line gets long here quickly so the sooner you get here, the better. Service is counter service and was friendly and quick. If youre looking for some tasty and unique flavors in Portland, Maine, check this place out!My wife and I got the ice cream flight which consisted of your choice of 4 different flavors. They give big scoops for each flavor and the flight is only $9 so make sure you have someone to help share, or not! The flavors we got were, Metz Sugar Pill, Blueberry Sour Cream Crumble, Lemon Poppy Jam and Butterbeer. The Metz Sugar Pill was an elevated smores. Its a marshmallow ice cream base with bits of graham cracker and hot fudge ripple. The Blueberry Sour Cream Crumble was a blueberry and sour cream ice cream base with different sized bites of sugary crust inside. The Lemon Poppy Jam is a lemon and poppyseed ice cream base with raspberry jam ripple. And lastly the Butterbeer. It was hard to tell what was in this but we assumed it was a root beer and butterscotch ice cream.Of the four flavors that we had, I really liked the Blueberry Sour Cream Crumble the most. The flavor was rich with blueberries and a hint of sour cream and the crumble inside was soft and complemented the ice cream perfectly. Tasted like I was eating blueberry pie with ice cream. The Lemon Poppy Jam was also delicious and fresh tasting. The jam was plentiful and also complemented the ice cream well. The Metz Sugar Pill was a good take on smores and the ice cream tasted like it had some malt taste to it alongside the marshmallow flavor and I liked it a lot but I with there was a bit more graham cracker bits inside. Lastly, the Butterbeer was... Different. It mostly just tastes like root beer ice cream which wasnt bad but wasnt the Butterbeer I expected. I went to universal studios and tried Butterbeer from the Harry Potter themed part of the park and it tasted more like butterscotch. So if youre like me and expect that flavor, this ice cream is not that haha still good though and tasted like an ice cream float. This place has a while bunch of different flavors that I wanted to try but got full after sharing the sampler with my wife. Check out my pictures to see all the ice creams that they have as of posting this.Food - 5 ⭐Atmosphere - 4.5 ⭐Service - 5 ⭐Overall - 5 ⭐Follow me for more reviews across America 😎🍔🍕🍨🍦🦖🔧
I was skeptical about Thai Coconut Chili, but man it was GOOD! And also got the Dude, both not too sweet. You could get one scoop for 2 flavors and it was big enough to share between two. Well worth the 25 min wait!
Omg! I love the flavors here! My single (actually two scoops) was so good, I came back for round 2 for a repeat the next day. I got Lamington (coconut base, etc) and Salted Caramel. I wish I could have it shipped! I checked this location out while visiting Portland from the DC area and was bummed I hadnt heard of one in the DC area....until I searched on IG/Google and discovered theres a DC location too! Will definitely visit that location (DC) too even though they may not have all the same flavors as this Portland location. Ill definitely come back whenever Im in Portland too.
Best ice cream in New England? (Ok, maybe rivaled by some random stand on Marthas Vineyard, but that was many many years ago). Wonderful creative flavors (Cinnamon & Cardamom, Vietnamese Coffee, Coriander Lemon Curd, The Dude [it has brandy+!) and great location. Extremely friendly and dedicated staff could use some extra help (hint hint owners!) w/ the long well earned lines!
At first, I was going to walk out because the server was not very friendly but then another server helped us and he was very nice and gave us very generous portions of ice cream. You will find some very unique flavors here. Try them! They are delicious!! My favorite was basil!
I got the metz sugar pill (very tuned up smores), the blueberry cream cheese pie, and my girlfriend got the girl-scout (thin mint). For starters it was $12 for about 8 scoops of what you’d get elsewhere, definitely go for the smaller size. The flavors were amazing. Best ice cream i’ve had hands down, so flavorful and creamy, i’m sure all the flavors were the same. I’ll be visiting every time i’m in town.
Their fresh mint ice cream had a perfect balance of flavors. I meant to order their fresh basil, but my brain froze and I said mint instead of basil. I don’t regret it, but I’ll try their basil next time if it’s available!
I was very impressed that theyve marked all of their flavors with symbols for allergens but was very disappointed that their only vegan options at the time were sherbets. They have coconut based ice creams, but they arent listed as vegan. The other places in town seem to have better vegan options.
Great tasting ice cream and friendly staff. Try The Dude! Delicious, custom flavor. A bit pricey, but worth the experience
Such a great ice cream. Worth the line wait. We got Maine Salted Caramel..... soo good. We shared one cup for a family of four. My husband, who is not an ice cream fan, loved this flavor. Will def be back tomorrow
Very tasty, the Thai coconut chili has a lovely kick and the cinnamon cardamom paired as my second scoop. I only wish I lived here to be able to have it again!
The basil flavor was one of the most unique flavors I’ve ever tried and I’d highly recommend giving it a try! You could taste the freshness of the ingredients used in their ice cream. I’d definitely come back to this place, as their flavors are constantly changing.
Worth the wait! Innovative flavors. Hard working, friendly staff.
Looked at hours and it was posted they were open to 11:00pm. Drove 45 minutes from where we were staying on a recommendation that it was a great place. Got to Portland at 9:15pm and had a rude person tell us we couldn’t get in line with the other 20 people waiting because they were closing at 9:30 that night. Rather than standing there turning people away, she could have helped serve the customers. Very disappointing. Watched the 20 people in front of us get ice cream including 2 of her friends that were lucky enough to make the cut to buy ice cream right before us. While I had to explain to my daughter that she wasn’t allowed to have ice cream. Will be sure to tell everyone this is NOT a great place.
Closed today. Hours arent posted at this time. When theyre open, the ice cream is great.
The most delicious ice cream weve had- unique, interesting flavors with subtlety and depth to them. Excellent option for those with Celiac disease or gluten sensitivity- each flavor is labeled with a wheat symbol if it has gluten in it... so nice not to have to ask about each one! Friendly staff as well. My kids beg me to go here each time were in Portland, and I cant say I ever mine giving in to it!
Great ice cream and really friendly service. Would highly recommend for an after dinner destination.
Rolled the dice on lemon curd coriander and it was fantastic. Great texture and flavor. Lives up to the hype.
The Chocolate Mint Oat based ice cream is some of the best ive ever had, worth the stop!
Wonderful ice cream. Worth the wait! The Buttermint and the Sweet Cream were Devine. The flight was perfect for the occasion!
Some of the best ice cream anywhere, with lots of different and interesting flavors.
Worth it to wait in the long line. So many unique flavors. Don’t skip the Thai chili coconut!
What an amazing place! Original flavors! And GOOD one too!!You should totally come and taste it!The flavors I tasted (and some ate obvious): mint, Vietnamese coffee, Belgian chocolate, salty Carmel and I think more but ALL were AMAZING!I usually dont like mint in candy but this one was delicious! The Vietnamese coffee is with a little cinnamon, AMAZING.
The flavors are amazing!! Tons of gluten free options
Yum!! We made sure to stop by the infamous Mount Desert Ice Cream while hanging out in Old Port. They make their own ice creams and sorbets and they dont shy away from the more adventurous flavor combinations. I like the more basic flavors so I stuck with the Maine Sweet Cream. It was rich and creamy and I enjoyed the consistency of it. My friend opted for the grapefruit sorbet and mentioned it was really refreshing and tasty. I sampled some of the more adventurous flavors and while they were TOO complex for my simpleton taste buds I appreciated what they were trying to do haha.
Great price and incredible quality icecream. much better than all the other options in maine! try the white russian, such a unique & yummy flavor!
Some of the best ice cream available. Id had it before in Acadia, and it was as good as I remembered. A perfect afternoon stop.
Ordered a couple flights; favorite flavors included:Callebaut ChocolateMaine Sea Salt CaramelEmogene’s Pecan Butter BrickleMaine Sweet CreamRunners-up:Cookies & Sweet CreamMetz Sugar PillGirl ScoutThis little shop was SUCH a treat. They even made milkshakes for the kids!
Their stuff is good however I was peeved by the stupid small DOUBLE SCOOP.
Amazing ice cream! If you want the best, come here. There are many ice cream shops in Bar Harbor, but none like this! The Brazilian Brigadeiro and the Callebaut Chocolate are a must if youre a chocolate lover! My husband had the Cafe Breve and Vietnamese Coffee. We also tried the Maine Sweet Cream (kind of like a vanilla). The flavors change at times, but they always have some standard ones. We were delighted to find out they have a shop in Old Port part of Portlyon Exchange St, too! Im glad we dont have one of these in Chicago or my waistline would be in trouble!
Very adventurous flavors, highly recommend this late night ice cream spot!
Great tasting ice cream, almost gelato consistency.
Amazing flavors and so unique. We tried thai chilli coconut, lemon and coriander, banana mollasses and viet coffee. Lemon coriander is the winner. Do try out their unique flavours.
One of the vegan flavors, Grasshopper pie, was out of this world good. Seriously delicious.
Great icecream at great prices with lots of variety.
This is a great ice cream shop with very reasonable pricing for its quality. I highly recommend the praline and cream, blueberry sour cream, thin mints and cardamom. Their servings are very large and a medium cup is a very satisfying portion. The texture of their ice cream is also excellent and despite it seemingly not being super high fat content, it is still creamy and doesn’t have ice chunks. The only thing I would add is more seating.
AMAZING 😍 i usually dont like sorbets, but the blueberry basil sorbet was out of this world and still very thick and creamy for a sorbet. The Dude is like a White Russian in ice cream and it was also delicious. their flavor list was unique and creative, if youre lookin for a scoop that goes above and beyond the classics, this is the spotfurthermore their service during covid-19 restrictions was effective and efficient. other ice creams places in the area only had call ahead ordering but Mt.Desert Island had all of their eye-catching flavors listed right in the window with someone ready to serve you in the doorway.
Delicious! Unique flavors
Pretty good overall. The flavors were hit and miss, but the ones that were good were really good.Hits: Cookies and cream, Baked apple, salted caramel.Misses: Mint chocolate (absolutely awful). White chocolate raspberry.
Fantastic ice cream and plenty of flavors.
I love thier ice cream. It is a dense rich ice cream, and the flavor combinations are creative and delicious! This is a must visit.
Really this was some of the best Icecream Ive had, Vietnamese coffee with hot fudge. Others in my party had: Maine Blueberry Crumble, Fresh Cream, Peanut butter and Chocolate. Full flavors and nice elasticity. Order at the door right now.
You can’t get better ice cream in the world than at MDI. We’ve only been to the stores in Bar Harbor so this is the first time Portland. It was excellent again. Plan to eat MDI everyday while here for the week
Super friendly staff, great variety of flavours available (everything from butterbeer and Vietnamese coffee to the old fashioned cookies and cream). Would highly recommend the sea salt caramel and skip the blueberry which sadly feels so watered down.
DELICIOUS vegan options
Get the triple, value .. bring credit card, no cash...I was lucky I forgot my wallet and the nice lady behind me,paid with hers..I gave her my cash..
Great flavors, good service, value for money! And the closed street makes for a good “playground” for the kids!
Having missed this place on my first visit to Portland, I was thrilled to finally try it! The creativity of flavors were as delightful as Id hoped. Standouts for creativity were pineapple paprika sorbet and butterscotch miso ice cream. I went for a more tame choice of ginger, which was chock full of warm spiced chunks of ginger. Perfect place if you have an adventurous palate and a sweet tooth!
The Maine Sweet Cream and Girl Scouts flavors were both interesting and delicious. Staff was fast and friendly and the price is very reasonable.
The ice cream is good but they are REALLY struggling with service. 45 min to scoop 4 scoops of ice cream for the 4 people in front of us in line. I can see them standing back there. What the heck are they doing?
It’s basically a storefront/outpost of the main location but they have host of interesting flavor combinations that are fairly priced considering the quality and the location. The service was friendly and efficient. Highly recommended!
This is the best icecream ever. The best icecream, Mt Desert icecream in Maine, makes their own flavors ... and their icecream is very individual. Each flavor is delicate and amazing. In my quest for the best icecream, they have absolutely won as best icecream.
Pretty crowded around 8, but the line was with the wait. The ice cream was not too sweet at all, and I loved it. I had banana molasses. Although I wasn’t a huge fan of it, it was pretty good and not overwhelming at all. My mother had blueberry something and it was really good and didn’t taste like some nasty artificial replacement. Definitely would recommend, don’t expect to get seating though! Especially at later times.
This place is pretty small, but has a alot of flavors. The options are endless. I grabbed the cookies n cream and my friend got salted caramel. Both, were smooth and delicious. The ice cream felt light and not to heavy on dairy like other ice creams. Price is wont the quality. Definitely, worth a shot
Flights of ice cream offered!
First visit here and the ice cream was great. Nice and thick and creamy. The flavor selection was good the service great explaining the flavors and giving samples. I will definitely be back next time we are in Portland.
This place is awesome! Not only do they have The Dude, their take on the Big Lebowskis White Russian, but they also gladly tolerated my wife, who wanted to order 4 flavors in a double cup. She might have spent too much time this afternoon at Austin Street Brewing and Rising Tide Brewing, but she really enjoyed this shops ice cream.
It was pretty crowded when we arrived and they didnt seem to have a consistent way to take orders. I ordered one scoop of peanut butter ice cream - it was good, and had chunks of actually peanut butter that tasted somewhat like a natural organic peanut butter. I wish they had whipped cream!
By fat the best ice cream I’ve ever had! The double was enormous! Great selection of unique delicious flavors. I have to go back again tomorrow! Love it!
Awesome, hand made ice cream served fresh daily! The selection is excellent, with diverse, unique flavours. There is only street parking, and only space for about 5 people to sit at a bar. The spot is small, but the taste is huge! Pro tip - the ice cream is sometimes still too hard to be distributed when they open. If so, just come back in a bit and itll be ready!
The lady manning the shop seemed rather sad (hope you feel better if you see this) but the flavors were daring and inventive and the Four Oranges of the Apocalypse was the single best ice cream I have ever had, I was in ecstasy for an hour afterwords. Just dont get it in a cone because you want the aftertaste to be solely the ice cream. It was complex, subtle, just... oh my.
We were in portland for one day and one night. With such a short amount of time and a sweet tooth nagging we took off walking downtown and stumbled upon this place. It had a very laid back and casual atmosphere...very comfortable. Lots of really cool art hanging (I assumed it to be local artists). The staff were very friendly and polite and all of that was just an added bonus on top of some very tasty ice cream. It was late night and when they ran out of a flavor, that was it.
I think this is the best ice cream Ive had in the united states. They have all this weird wonderful flavors like Basil, Coriander and Cardimom, which were nice to try out. Eventually I went more conservative, and had the best sea salt caramel ice cream Ive ever tried.
Fast, Friendly, and clean. Like many others over the sweltering weekend my wife and I trudged through the heat to find some satisfying way of cooling down. Mount Desert Island did not dissapoint! The staff was super friendly despite probably having a crazy rush and dealing with overheated people all day, the line moved almost as swiftly as i did devouring the delicious and filling ice cream i got. My wife got good ol chocolate and i got the sea salt caramel both of which were the perfect choice for helping us survive the endless heat. So, needless to say.. this place is awesome and you should go. 😂
Went to the Portland Maine location today and was very disappointed! Terrible customer service! After ordering 3 overpriced ice creams and sitting in the store to eat them when asked if we could use the bathroom they told us they do not have one. Come on! You don’t allow your paying customers to use the bathroom!!! Instead we were directed to go to the Starbucks across the street. Shame on you Mt Desert ice cream! Shame on you! You need to take a hospitality lesson!
Awesome Vietnamese coffee ice cream! Great unusual flavors. I’ll crave this ice cream when I’m home.
I have always loved their off kilter flavors and the risks they take are good ones. I wish that their ice cream was a bit more hard so it didnt melt so fast, but I still take out if town guests here for something out of the ordinary with respect to flavors. The only flavor I havent liked is their matcha, but its hard to get good matcha outside of Japan.
Wow the line was long. But the flavor selection is unparalleled and very unique. Our group got a variety of flavors, including butterscotch miso, sea salt caramel, maple walnut, blueberry basil, and chocolate. Awesome all around. Big portions too.
Their flavors are always interesting and delicious!
Lots of amazing flavors! We had to get the 4 flavor flight because we just couldnt decide.
Ive never been disappointed. Amazing flavor choices and great service. Just dont expect basic van choc straw flavors. They are never boring or bland, never. Go there, eat ice cream.
Great ice cream! Creamy goodness. Cranberry Bliss, Cookies & Cream, Chocolate flavors were AMAZING!
The ABSOLUTE beat ice cream I have had. And I live in a city with a plethora of gourmet ice creams. Great and diverse / wacky flavor list, great and helpful staff
The Ice cream is so good, just stumbled upon it today! They had quite a few flavors id never heard of before. Which is awesome if you wanna try new things.I tried the Butterscotch Miso and it is fantastic!! Such a good flavor idea and my new favorite! The lady at the counter was also really nice!
Stopped in for ice cream in the evening after walking around Portland all day. It really hit the spot. The blackstrap banana is very good.
Solid ice cream, creative flavors (favorite this visit was the coriander blackberry). Excellent friendly service. And Im glad they have a flight option for indecisive people like myself, normally I have to pay too much and get too much ice cream just to get a bit of everything and this was a much better system.
Employees are very friendly, knowledgeable and overall wonderful!! Would highly recommend. Must try.
Absolutely best ice cream in town! Homemade interesting flavors and classics as well! Their hot fudge is phenomenal!
Pros: The Cafe Breve shake was tastyCons: It was a bit spendy, and the service wasnt the friendliest, but the worst part was the tiny, paper straw that made it wicked hard to drink. If theyre trying to reduce plastic waste, swap the plastic cup and plastic lid for a paper cup and give me a big ole McDonalds sized straw with my shake.
2 scoops: Blueberry sour cream crumble flavor and peanut butter - unbelievable combination. Super fresh, menu always different each time I visit and always surprised at the flavor ideas
They have flavors like Butterbeer and I love when they have ginger ice cream
Fantastically inventive flavors like cinnamon cardamom and molasses blackstrap banana would have me coming back week after week - If I lived in Portland!
Delicious ice cream, innovative flavors, nice servers. The kulfi flavor was sooo good. Adults and kids all enjoyed what they got. Generous serving sizes too.
Great ice cream. Definitely worth stopping in. Easily the best in Portland.
Had the cinnamon cardamom ice cream - super yummy. The employees were super nice too.
Amazing flavors. Pretty little storefront and super friendly service. You can get 2 flavors on a small co e which is the way to go since youll want to try them all.
Absolutely floored by how many creative and original flavors this place offers. Do not come here if you are looking for your “classic” ice cream flavors. DO come here if you want an experience you won’t get elsewhere. I ordered a double with cinnamon cardamom, biscoff butter, and hot chili chocolate and it was the perfect trifecta of flavors. I grabbed a pint of all 3 of those, as well as buttermilk blueberry and blackstrap banana to bring back home with me. This place is a must if you visit Bar Harbor.
I loved the variety of flavors, and some not so common flavors. You can play it safe or try your next favorite flavor.
Had the dude (white russian) ice cream. So good! I love their out of the box thinking when it comes to their flavors. This ice cream place will be around for a long time.
Insane ice cream flavors! A must try lemonpoppyberry with basil! Sooooo good!
Amazing. Hand made, full bodied flavorful ice cream. So many unique flavors, each one a hit. This ice cream is my new favorite. We were fortunate to beat the rush so we could sample a few flavors, Indian Pudding, Cookie Dough, a Chocolate ice cream mixed with Dulce de Leche (which was to die for!) and the Cinnamon Cardamom. Friendly staff too. We are definitely going to make this our new ice cream spot.
