The museum portion was well done. We enjoyed the short films. They were very interesting. The camera displays and photo exhibits were nice too. The house was filled with lovely pieces. The gentleman in the house had lots of interesting facts. The gardens were being redone when we visited. It was a nice visit.
Expertly designed museum of George Eastman, who create photography equipment usable by the public. The grounds include his home with beautiful paintings of him and other family members. A progression of photography materials as well as photographs are on display. The grounds which include flowers and vines as well as a brick pathway around a pond is currently being renovated.
The mansion tour was great and you can do it on your phone and each room is explained. The display of all the cameras and the history was fabulous. The photo gallery...... I don’t know what I was expecting to see but the super modern art/photography is not my thing, so I was a bit disappointed. I was hoping to see some landscape, portrait photography. Overall a great experience.
Such a great historical museum. It showcases the time in which the owner was alive as well as the history of Kodak! I recommend going in December when they have the gingerbread houses on display! Such a fun way to navigate the museum!
I have fond memories of working on a project many decades ago in Rochester that entailed organizing a photo shoot inside the George Eastman House when it was the original house, without the museum built on. It was a special thing to be able to take photos inside this amazing place of photographic history. Ive visited several times over the years and its been kind of sad to see the house turned into a museum that ruined the integrity of the original structure. That being said, the parts of the house that are in their original layout with original furnishings, are beautiful and worth seeing. (Seeing Mr. Eastmans bedroom turned in to a Dr. Suess play area was a little weird!)We visited when masks were required due to COVID, even though our visit was after the mask mandate had been lifted and masks were no longer required for vaccinated people in most businesses. The guard at the entrance was aggressive and nearly yelled at two people in our group of seven who didnt have a mask. We figured they would offer a mask for those who were no longer carrying masks everywhere. The guard did dig up a mask from a cabinet at the reception desk, however reluctantly. That encounter and the unfriendly attitude of the receptionist is part of the reason I gave the GEM a 4-star (those two people deserve a 2!).Due to COVID, they werent having docent-led tours, but the audio recording stations on your cell phone work great and is well-produced.Get past the attitude at the front door and enjoy the house tour!
A Rochester staple that is great for all ages. A great way to spend an afternoon learning about George Eastman and photography, while enjoying the fixtures of such a beautiful mansion. My favorite parts are always the interactive parts of the museum. If you go, the cafe and gift shop have moved and look stunning.
Beautiful place! If your a camera buff theres a wonderful museum and lots of history of the Kodak company. Theres a photograph exhibit where the captions are very careful to explain how the subjects identify themselves (cant be too careful these days) but the rest of the exhibits are normal.
Such a great museum and the Eastman house itself is so nice to tour. It’s fun to come at different times of year to see the garden change with the seasons.
This place is one of top tourist attraction in Rochester city. The fee is minimal for every category of people. This museum features personal residential of the person who founded Kodak. That is George Eastman. The residence is not anything less than a palace. It has in house small cafe with exciting ice creams and other food. If also has in built fancy shop. If you are interested to know how we did we reach to camera which we use today. The place also feature arts of other artist.
There was a ton of fun stuff to look at, and the gardens were amazing. When I went, the back garden was closed for renovations, but otherwise it was a great experience.
Great museum, it had beautiful mansion and gardens (we didnt see gardens up close and it was past season but still lovely). The gallery To Survive On This Shore was wonderful and emotional. Very glad I got to see the exhibition.
Beautiful historic home to visit and learn about George Eastmans contributions to photography, and contributions for the betterment of society. Great displays on the history of photography, and continuous gallery installations of modern and historic photographs. I love coming here for the gingerbread house displays, and also the spring flower displays starting in February. OK for families but little kids will be bored.
We had no idea the Dutch Connection was going on. Beautiful, fragrant surprise. We were also unaware that prepurchasing tickets was encouraged since this was a spur of the moment trip. The museum of film was really interesting & educational. There was an exhibit by a photographer, Carl Chiarenza. The mansion was gorgeous. Everyone was polite & respectful of distancing. I enjoyed that the tour was self guided.
If you’re looking for the most breathtaking venue to get married at look no further! Our wedding in the west garden was truly amazing!!! It was gorgeous! Working with Allen was so easy! He was so friendly and accommodating! Our guests couldn’t stop talking about how unique our wedding ceremony was and how romantic.
What a beautiful home. We enjoyed the architecture and history. Sadly, the gardens were closed while being renovated. We didnt love the art exhibits, but enjoyed the camera displays.
The house is well preserved with access to the first and second floor. The garden area is under construction right now and there were limited exhibits in the gallery section today. Lots of potential though.
Beautiful home wish the other floors were open maybe next time
Great tour of the home and history of George Eastman. The audio recording for each room was well done and added some great background information. Only downside was the gardens were closed due to renovations. Highly recommended.
This was such a great place to visit. Loved the current show and the eatery. It was also fascinating to see some of the mansion itself. Bummed that the garden was under construction but would love to come back and see it restored.
I really enjoyed the tour a mix of photographic history and artist displays Eastman was one of the great minds of the time before Muzak he had pipe organs installed and built into the house so you can hear music everywhere you went he even employed a full-time organist for 16 years. After a recent restoration the two organs are played for Sunday tours .
I visit the Eastman Museum at least once a year. Always an interesting, pleasant experience. The new visitor entrance adjacent to the parking lot makes much more sense and is far more convenient than the previous entrance at the very back of the building. We particularly enjoyed the current exhibit of tablescapes with a movie theme. Some very creative scenes, particularly the one for The Dressmaker movie. The new cafe is a huge improvement over the small, dark cafe of the past.
I usually try to go every couple years. Theres always a photo gallery in rotation in wing attached to the house, and most have been worth seeing in my opinion. The house itself has historical information on the evolution of cameras in general as well as the Kodak company and George Eastman himself. While you can do some okay reading with the exhibits I highly suggest looking into getting an actual tour (info about tours should be on the website). Sundays there is often someone in playing the organ live which is a special experience. I have a couple times been around on quiet evenings and had an attendant give a special tour of the organ mechanics, but theres no guarantee that will happen at a given time. Over a a nice experience. The first visit you can probably spend 2-4 hours depending on how in depth you want to look into things. Ive been enough times I usually only stay 1-2 hours now. Theres a free lot that doesnt usually fill up (there is nearby street parking if it does and you can walk a little) the garden/grounds are currently under repair but usually really pleasant, I often see people doing photoshoots in them!
I wasnt sure what to expect but this was a really interesting and informative experience, and the mansion part of the museum was just beautiful. So glad we went, staff were super friendly. You can wander on your own or get in on a guided tour. The photography exhibits were stunning, I especially liked the Nathan Lyon gallery. We went early spring before the gardens were open, but Im sure once they are open it will be even more beautiful. If I ever come back to Rochester Ill definitely go again.
Place is more of a art museum attached to Eastmans house. Big construction going on. Very weak signage. Entry sign pointed to dumpster. Turns out you need to walk through an ACTIVE CONSTRUCTION SITE to get in. By active, I mean that an excavator drove in front of us as we walked through. Amazing. Lawsuit waiting to happen. Inside there are four exhibits and the house. No docent/guide, but they have an app. I tried app for first two exhibits. It offered not much useful, so I gave up on it. Security guard found me and family in one of the exhibits and asked me to adjust my mask to better cover my nose. Thanks for the advice chief.History of photography exhibit had an agenda - womens role in shaping the media. Im not a big fan of agendas. Tell the history - anything lopsided is not helpful.Overall, not really a go back or recommend. The house is somewhat interesting, but at $15 per person, not really worth it.
I visited the museum on May 19, 2021. Upon arrival there, we were treated by two employees at the front desk. However, only one employee would do tickets. We were informed by their website to purchase tickets ahead of time. We stood in line...in second place for over 7 minutes while the couple ahead of us purchased their tickets. The museum raised prices by $3.00 per ticket and we were not able to see the entire exhibition. We were informed, the bedroom of George Eastman had infact been newly renovated and we should check it out. We were unable to see the bedroom, the entire 3rd floor, the kitchen, the servants quarters and the gardens due to construction and velvet ropes. We were disappointed. We felt as if the history of the Eastman Mansion gave way to the early 1990s as we traveled through the camera and photography exhibits. We were informed well about some of the cameras but not so well about the man himself behind Kodak. This is just one mans opinion. You will need to see for yourself to draw your own conclusion.
Had a great time! The food here was delicious and different, and there is a lot of history to this place. Highly recommend if youre into photography or filmography.
The house was beautiful the camera exhibit was good The main gallery was closed. The other gallery was full of pictures of transgenders not exactly not exactly what I was expecting..
One of the most impressive mansions and museums. Great ti see how far we have come in a short time.
Museum was good but it depends on what is on display at the time. The house tour is definitely worth doing. The garden was closed for renovations, which it looked like it needed. Interesting place,. especially for camera buffs.
Beautiful and educational. They had an exhibit about the lives of the transgender community. Its unfortunate that I went while the garden was under renovation but it was a nice place to visit.
Love the GEM! Especially great around christmas time; they have beautiful home made gingerbread houses on display all around! My friends love coming here and taking pictures in the gardens. They are beautiful any time of the year
A gorgeous and fascinating piece of local history. Not to be missed if you live in the Rochester area!
Gorgeous clean spacious facility. Ample parking. Interesting exhibits and lovely manicured grounds outside. There’s also a fresh gift shop here that might appeal to visitors. We visited in Late August/September 2019 and there was a fun Warner Bro’s exhibit that appealed to all of us.
Interesting and beautiful. Time your visit when theres a tour (I think 10 and 2). There were weird temporary movie themed exhibits up when we visited that didnt make much sense and detracted from the ambiance, but otherwise a great visit.
Very nice museum. We went on the tour of his house, the tour guide was very informative and interesting. The history of George Eastman and his house is very interesting. Theres even original furniture and fixtures including a cool pipe organ, chairs, lamps, etc. I would definitely visit again. The exhibits in the newer museum section are really nice to. I saw the Indian film exhibit which is cool.
Everything was blocked. Garden, standard display. Hopefully they open things up fast. Not worth the price of admission
Dutch connection annual flower display
What a wonderful place to visit. This is more of a museum type of environment. It is meant to walk around and look at all the the rooms and items on display. There is an interactive room upstairs for younger kids, but it is only one smaller room. It isnt like the museum of play where kids run all around. If that is your expectation, youre probably better off skipping this. BUT, for those interested, this place is pretty sweet. The displays and house are immaculate. It is best to go when the flower displays are in full bloom. It is quite breathtaking. Its mind boggling to see what type of wealth and accomplishments George Eastman achieved. His home would be considered top 5% by todays standards, so one could only imagine back in the early 1900s.
Remarkable building, remarkable history. They rotate what is on display to stay exciting. Parking is good too!
Camera equipment by the ton with every kind of Kodak to the camera that mapped the dark side of the moon. Especially fascinating are the documents on the table in the upstairs bedroom. Who knew?
It is an interesting journey in the museum. The displays and the explanation for the early films and the technology behind them. There is a lab where the encourage all to touch every thing. That is a great experience for the kids and the curious kinds. The Eastman house is itself so splendid in its grandeur. No less than an emperors dwelling with the splendid mansion and rolling greens all around it.When in Rochester, it is a must visit.
My favorite part of the museum is seeing where Eastman lived. Went on an hour long guided tour which was very informative. There are also interesting exhibits on photography.
The George Eastman Museum is a cultural trifecta offering a world renowned photography and film exhibition; an incredible architectural oasis complete with manicured gardens; and finally an unrivaled venue for all sorts if events. The exhibits are sure to please visitors of all ages. During my last visit we got to see the Warner Brothers Cartoon exhibit which provided an insiders behind the scenes look at the mechanics of producing these historical cartoons. This exhibition came complete with the opportunity to relax in the theater and view about two hours of the best of the Warner Brothers cartoons. The gift shop offers a variety of souvenirs and learning materials for photography fans and creative types. Although 99% of the products were geared towards film enthusiasts, the educational material was quite appropriate for digital photographers as well. The cafe was an absolute surprise as the salads, gelatos and sandwiches are made to order immediately after ordering.
Excellent museum. Hands on rooms for kids. Gardens are pretty.
Absolutely beautiful place
An interesting look at the man behind Kodak. The front part of the museum is all about the history of photography and the journey of film. The back part is his actual house which is focused on the man himself, a philanthropic socialite.
The George Eastman House is a beautiful building with a lot of interesting exhibitions. For Photography lovers it is a real gem! The gardens are beautiful and we really enjoyed walking through them and looking at all the plants. The staff was very nice and helpful. I am looking forward to my next visit!
One of the pre-eminent museum of photography on the planet. Superbly curated exhibits that are feasts for the eyes, stimulate the senses and educate.
I was surprised at how cool this museum is. There are great exhibits of all types of cameras. You will be pointing and remembering how someone used to have one just like it. The photographs definitely tell a story. In the mansion it is fully restored and pleasant to stroll through. All the rooms have something to show. I have pre teen kids and they thought it was cool. Put this on your bucket list.
I love this place the atmosphere is peaceful and beautiful around this time with all the colors great place for pictures
Really a hidden gem in the ROC. An amazing look at one of Rochesters greats: George Eastman. KODAK is not what is once was, but the museum shows how he lived his life. The attached theater is a treat in itself. The holidays are great with gingerbread houses as well.
Very little to see- gardens are largely closed at the moment (though they do not disclose this until admission has been paid). The exhibit on vintage cameras was nice as well as part of the mansion that were open, but there are many other better places to visit in Rochester for the price.
George Eastman Museum never disappointments. My favorite exhibit is the Dutch Collection in the spring.
This is a beautiful interesting museum. George Eastman rest in peace.
Pretty nice museum. Extensive knowledge about cameras and film. Very nice people. Park around back and walk in through the gardens.
Absolutely beautiful. I recently moved to Rochester and Im so glad this was one of the first sights I went to see. I did not know there was so much incredible rich history in Rochester. The staff was so nice and so helpful I cant wait to go visit again!
Love the mansion tour. The gardens will be great when they are done renovating.
Went to see the gingerbread houses in November it was very nice!
Beautiful mansion and fascinating displays of the history and highlights of fun and photography. Well worth the visit to learn more about this amazing man and his influence on how we view and interact with the world. I have to get back to hear an organ recital on a Sunday afternoon. The organ and its restoration are another amazing story. We also wanted to see the Christmas gingerbread house display, but were disappointed that they took it down before Christmas.
You need to give yourself at least 2-3 hours to see this beautiful mansion, intriguing museum and provocative exhibition. The Eastman Mansion can be seen as a self-guided tour that you follow along with a tour available online. It tells you about the life of George Eastman in Rochester, New York. Innovator, inventer, philanthropist he was a very interesting man.His house would have been state of the art in his generation. It is very well preserved and often used for weddings and special events.Be sure and peruse the beautiful gardens. We spent so much time on the Levinthal exhibition (Myth, War and Desire) and the George Eastman Mansion that we had no time left for the photography and film museum. That just means we will have to return.
Not only was the house beautiful, but the food at the cafe was delicious. Due to time constraints did not get to fully tour the museum, but we will when we return.
Love the new entrance to museum and the Dryden! The new cafe is really nice too. Seems as though you are visiting a museum in big city.
Dryden Theater and its programs are such a Rochester treasure along with the museum and the work they do preserving films.
It was a nice experience. I liked the garden, but the photography was just breath taking.
What can I say what hasn’t been said about this fine museum. I visited on Sunday 15 July 2018. After checking out of my hotel early I drove to East Avenue and explored the neighborhood with its unique mansions. After that I parked at the Eastman Museum and explored their beautiful gardens and grounds. Plenty of opportunities for some fine photography. I had visited the Eastman Museum previously in 2002 and it seemed like only yesterday since I had been there last. Later I went over to Wegmans to get something to eat and brought it back to the rock garden to eat in such peaceful surroundings. I had plenty of time because the museum does not open until eleven on Sundays. After I paid my senior admission it was time to explore the galleries. Honestly, I did not care for the visiting artists’ displays. Not to my taste. Across the hall on the right was a gallery of antique cameras, Kodak’s digital camera, historic photographs, and other interesting objects from the world of photography. I toured the gift shop, gardens, and later toured the house. When you pay your admission find out when the tours are. Very interesting indeed! I learned a lot from those knowledgeable volunteers. Photos of the George Eastman House are encouraged but no flash or tripods are allowed. Truly a world-class museum.
Great museum. All decorated for the holidays. Gingerbread houses on display.
Beautiful mansion. Wished they had more cameras and photos for display.
One of the best places to spend any amount of time in Rochester
We took wedding pictures here. What an excellent venue. Absolutely beautiful place, for a moment youre thinking happily Im not in rochester
Fun museum with great history of photography. A must for any novice or expert photographer!
Great source of information. Beaitiful home.
Beautiful building everything here isEpic.
Had a great tour of the George Eastman House and Museum. Tour guide we happened to meet up with was extremely knowledgeable, and was very patient answering questions from my 6 and 8 year olds. Was concerned going in that the kids would be bored, but they ended up loving it! The old mansion is beautiful and very interesting. We spent less time in the galleries on the backside museum, but anyone who appreciates the history of photography will be in heaven.
We went to the George Eastman Museum, this time, to see their annual flower show. We were not disappointed. The Eastman Museum produced a large, and impressive array of colorful Spring flowers, and this was a welcome contrast to the cold, black and white Winter weve all been experiencing. The Eastman Museum is a great place to visit, any time of the year, if you are interested in photography, the history of Rochester, New York, or the history of American industry, in general; but the most beautiful you will ever see the Eastman Museum is during their early Spring Flower Show.
The museum was amazing. The history and biography of Eastman was very interesting. His house or mansion was also amazing..everything was great to see. So glad we went.
Absolutely beautiful. Grounds and details inside. I went during the Dutch connection and the flowers were wonderful!
If there is a finer museum in North America, let me know. Cozy yet spacious. Intense yet laid back. A national treasure.
Excellent musuem. The permanent collection includes a plethora of historic cameras, including two owned and donated to the museum by Ansel Adams. In addition to early prints, a Barbara Kruger, Diane Arbus, Dorothea Lange, and others were on display. Two special exhibit galleries were spacious and I liked both exhibits. I really appreciated the commentary on the identification cards next to each piece of art. Whether descriptive, interpretive, or providing historical context, they enhanced my enjoyment of the photographs. Admission to the museum includes entrance to the Eastman house, a lavish display of wealth with interesting artifacts. The gift store has a nice selection of gifts and books. There is a cafe but we didnt go in. This museum is definitely worth a trip to Rochester, and I plan to return in the future!
Decent artifacts!Lunar camera is the best!Worth for 1 time visit
I have lived in Rochester for 62 years and this was my first time touring the Eastman House. I really enjoyed the Dutch Bulb display yet wandering through the house where George Eastman lived and created was wonderful. It made me even more proud of my work career a Kodak.
Small but full of history, wonder, art and beauty. Definitely worth the 5 bucks admission.
Great Rochester Museum! And if you did not know and have a EBT card you can use it to get in for FREE!!
Tour the house with the guide. Youll hear more about the history and this very kind, groundbreaking and amazing man
Interesting look at the Gilded Age Mansion. Could use some more chairs for
Great job on preserving the mansion with all artifacts.Awesome camera collection, lunar orbiter subsystem included.
