My daughter’s car broke down while she was 1,200 miles from home. She was able to get the car to limp into Tip Top Transmissions in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was nearing the end of her summer work internship there and needed her car back quickly to be able to make the 1,200-mile journey back home. Tip Top could have easily said “take a number we’ll get to it when we get to it” since they had her non-driving car there at that point or taken advantage of a young lady far from home, but they did not. They got it apart quickly and identified problems from a previous repair that a different company had done. Instead of just fixing it, they went above and beyond, and took pictures of the previous repair issues, talked to my daughter, my wife and I, (several times) to explain things in terms we could understand, talked to the shop that had done the previous work, and talked (multiple times) to our insurance company that had paid for the previous work. Luckily, they are a full-service auto mechanic shop that just specializes in transmission repairs, so they were able to fix the transmission as well as the other damage done due to the previous repair. They thoroughly test drove it after their repairs to make sure my daughter would not get stranded on the side of a road somewhere. When all was said and done, my daughter got back a car in perfect working order in time to drive home and our insurance covered the costs that were due to the original repair issues. Joey, the owner of this shop, along with his staff (Ross and Gary) treated my daughter like she was their own, and I will be forever grateful! If you are looking for a reputable car repair shop, look no further. I can’t say enough good things about Tip Top Transmissions.

Mike was great to work with! Tip Top did a free analysis in my transmission overheating and told me what it needed. I didn’t have to have them do the work and the analysis was still free! They are very knowledgeable and the price quoted me was the EXACT price I paid!! I will recommend Tip Top and I will definitely use them again!!!

I came to Ross at Tip Top Transmissions with a tricky repair (wheel bearing replacement on an older 4x4 Toyota Tacoma) that I needed to have addressed quickly while I was driving across the country. Ross and the techs at Tip Top went above and beyond anything I could have expected. Not only was the repair done quickly to get me back on the road, but Ross even called the mechanic who had done a faulty repair just days earlier and got them to cover the expense! Had a great experience with Ross at Tip-Top Transmission. Had a problem with a Toyota Camray 2015 transmission. Had gone other places. All of them just wanted to put in a new trans. Ross suggested checking out the computer for the trans. to see it that might be the problem!! It was. For hundreds of dollars rather than thousand the trans. works like new! NO Problems. Joey and his crew are great at what they do, they are reasonably priced and they usually have it done on time as long as they dont find other problems going on with the vehicle. I was experiencing some alarming sounds coming from my transmission and an over all janky feeling when handling my Subaru Forester. Tip Top Transmissions was able to diagnose the issues fairly quickly. They were very clear in explaining what those issues were and how long repairing those issues would take. Their staff is very kind and patient while being extremely busy. Now that Im driving my Forester again, I can attest to the quality of work Tip Top did. It runs very smoothly and quietly. I will be returning with any other concerns I may have and will recommend their services to family and friends.

I cant say enough about the owner Joey and the crew that he has working for him. Came into town traveling from the Bay Area to MN with clutch problems that were sure to put a stop to my trip. After calling every transmission spot in SLC and being turned away I fortunately called this place. They told me to bring it right in, theyll take a quick look at it and see if they can do anything to keep me on the road. THATS EXACTLY WHAT THEY DID! After a couple hours they had it working great. Not only that, but he also made it a point to get me his business card and told me to have the transmission shop in MN who was going to do the long term work to call him and hell run through his findings with them. His staff was more than informative, certainly calming my nerves as you can imagine they were running high with truck issues and a 1,000 miles to go on my journey. Their knowledge and willingness to so quickly help a guy out is a pairing that seems to be lost in these times. Especially with a parking lot full of other vehicles to work on. I would recommend these guys to anyone. Such a great place!

The guys at Tip Top are awesome!! They have worked on my cars for years. We run some pretty old cars and they have been fair with each one. They have been very fair working with us for warrant work. They have been very up front about my costs. I love that they give my cars a check over each time they have it. It gives me a heads up for future costs and no surprises. You cant go wrong with them.

The owner and his company are awesome. I had an incredibly positive experience here.January of 2020 they took me in from Tanner Transmissions in Draper where I had quite possibly the worst customer experience of my life.Tip Top towed me from Riverton to North Salt Lake at no cost, took less than a week to finish the job, kept me informed along the way with updates, and got me a rebuilt transmission on a 2010 Ford Focus for a little over $2K.I never felt like I was being conned, they were happy to educate on any questions and were friendly.Nearly a year later, the transmission is running the same as when we left the shop.I would highly recommend Tip Top to anyone unfortunately dealing with transmission issues.

Please avoid .. Broke my trans housing and held me hostage with a bad diagnosis. Pulled my truck from them after a quote for 5700. Still cost 1100 to get it back from being held hostage. Found another shop that did the work for 3300. Ross is very dishonest

I wanted to give a shout out to Tip Top. I bought an 1993 Motor home built on a Chev P30 .... We had it for about a year and things were pretty good considering the age of the RV. After a trip to the Oregon coast, we noticed some red transmission fluid on our driveway.....long story short, after taking the RV to Three different Transmission shops and paying for each of them, the leak was still there and in fact got worse. This Spring I Called Tip Top and they were able to squeeze me in for a look see. Finally someone that actually took the time and effort to find the cause of the problem....!!! And even better They fixed it. I wanted to wait some time before writing a review to really make sure that the problem didnt crop up again.....Nope! Its fixed and A BIG THANKS to TIP TOP...... Im going back for some brake work if I can get in....Thanks Guys

Don’t take your vehicle here bogus fees and prices. He told me 800 for removal and installation and he only did a removal and I still got charged 900. I asked for transmission cooler lines and he insisted he had the right parts but in facts where the incorrect part. I found a shop that did the repair I asked for and didn’t try to sell me a whole new transmission overall. Your better off going anywhere else. It doesn’t stop there when my dad talked to them Joe told him two higher prices than he originally told me so he was trying to get more money out of us. Overall your trash Joe

We will never ever take our car anywhere else. Joey and his team are thorough, honest, and knowledgeable. We have had extensive repairs on our vehicle done and returned it to the original shop that did the work 5 or 6 times before anyone would admit something was wrong with the repair they did. When we took our car to Tip Top they took the time to diagnose it, fit it, and then re-test it to make sure we wouldnt have any further problems with it. Since picking our car up we havent had a single issue. We will definitely be referring our friends and family here in the future.

The guys at Tip Top Transmissions got me back on the road when my Chevy Duramax decided to limp the transmission while visiting SLC. I could not have asked for more professional, knowledgeable folks to be working on my truck. They were super communicative, transparent with pricing, and worked hard to get me back on the road within a couple days. I cannot recommend this shop enough. Its already terrifying enough to try and pluck a shop out of the air who can work on diesel transmissions in a city I didnt know- I feel very lucky to have chosen Tip Top Transmissions. We were on a trip to Yellowstone and far from home when our transmission started smoking on our motor home. We had it towed into Salt Lake City and waited till Monday to find someone to look at it/fix it. We went to many Ford dealerships and small nationwide transmission shops just to be turned away. The Ford dealerships don’t work on motorhomes and the other shops didn’t seem interested. In a panic I started googling. Tip top transmission popped up. I read a few reviews and decided to call. Joey was very nice as I explained my situation. He told me to try to drive it to him and if we had any problems he would send a wrecker to come get it. We ended up needing the wrecker after all do to the previous wrecker stripping the drive line bolts. He was very knowledgeable and him and his team drove the motor home and diagnosed the problem in a very timely manner. Always in contact with us and making sure we were in the loop. He had our coach done when we returned from Yellowstone the following week (we decided to carry on with our trip) and even had us bring the coach back (4 days later) before the long trip home just to ensure everything was good. He and his team care. A great straight forward shop with people who actually care! We will be back next year for our yearly service on the transmission.

Im a mechanic but newer automatic transmissions and I do not get along. Took this to a different shop first, and boy, do I regret it. Joey is the man. He called me every day during diagnoses and told me exaclty what he was seeing. We did a full rebuild on my 08 Acadia. He got it back together and didnt think it felt right so he tore it all back apart, just to make sure it was right. Found out the brand new GM computer was bad and replaced it. They go the extra mile and everything was still within the price quoted. Drives like a dream now. I will go to them for anything I am unable to do myself. Great techs, honest, and hardworking. Highly recommend!!

I Dropped my car off and told them what it was doing. The said they found nothing wrong, they had my car for a week some mechanic drove it everyday as his rental car and put over 450 miles on it used the full tank of gas and complained that it was empty so he couldnt drive it anymore. We never got a call that they were done looking at it we had to call them. I had to take the head mechanic on a drive to show him what it was doing. He was all o so now I know what to look at. Its all to late I am going somewhere else.I know for a FACT it was over 450 miles it had 58,8(something) when I brought it in it has 59,385 when i picked it up. thats 380 with out doing math.

Was referred over to tip top by a buddy of mine. I called them with regard to a custom project that I was having issues with. Out of all the transmission shops I called this was the only one that actually provided valuable information. They knew what they were talking about and politely took the time to answer questions I had. I have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone I know.If youre not passionate enough about your craft to spend the a few minutes talking about it, youre in it for the money. Tip top actually care enough to give me a solid response. This should certainly be ANY automotive enthusiasts first choice to work on their transmission or diff!

These guys did an awesome job on my transmission! They found a quality used transmission for me when I told them I wouldnt be able to afford a brand new one. Only reason I cant give the shop 5 stars is because my car was in the shop from July 17th to August 30th. Almost 6 weeks of having to wait. If I was given a clear prediction of how far they were backed up I would have appreciated the warning! Other than that, I really am happy with the job.

My daughter was told by 2 different places that her transmission was going out on her 2016 Nissan Versa. It was making a terrible noise. I took it to Tip Top, they drove it, ran some diagnostics and found that it was a wheel bearing! Not the transmission! They fixed it and had it back to us in just a couple of days. Transmission specialists think that they’re gods and you’re lucky if they decide to favor their magical powers on your vehicle. AND it’s going to cost you…Herb and the crew at Tip Top Transmissions are nothing like the typical shop. They exhibited kindness and understanding by listening and then explaining what they could do. I ended up with a $500 bill and a perfectly operating car. I am sure that other shops would have scammed me for $1000 more in unnecessary work.I trust Herb and his crew.They don’t work late. They don’t work weekends. They do it right.

These guys are great! Our transmission finally went out 6 days before Christmas Eve. We were planning to leave on a long road trip the day after Christmas. They were willing to tow the vehicle for free, but to save a little time, I drove it in myself. The next morning (Friday) Herb called and said hed try to get it done by Monday, the day before Christmas Eve when I knew every shop would be closing early. I got the call on Monday, picked it up, and went on my trip. The vehicle has never run better. Herb recommended we bring it in after our trip so he check for leakages. I took it in over my lunch hour. He took a look. All is well.I will recommend this shop to anyone.

At first I was surprised by the friendly staff when I asked about transmission issues I was having as I had gotten the run around from multiple shops. Then the second time I called back I received a totally different and cold toned service. The representative was condescending and was telling me that to check my fluid it would cost me an hours worth of pay. Just to check the fluid, and that they dont do free service. I never once asked for free service. Not recommended.

If I could give this shop a million star review I would. They are amazing. Herb is by far the most knowledgeable, honest and caring mechanic I have ever met. I took my car to the dealership and to AAMCO for a bid and they both told me I needed a new transmission running me $2500-$7000. Herb researched and found the problem in one afternoon and was able to completely fix my transmission issue for $700. Every conversation over the phone with Herb was at least 15 minutes, he is so detailed and beyond knowledgeable and explanditory. I am so grateful I found this shop and that they where able to save me so much money!! Highly highly recommend Tip Top Transmission.

I took my car in to these guys to have the transmission in my Mazda 6 checked out. They were great at explaining to me what the issue was and taking the time to make sure that I was comfortable with the work they had done. I am a hotshot owner I took my ram 3500 to them and dropped it off and they took my truck for a drive and said it needs a Transmission And the price was $7100 and I told him to put the pan back on it I I would come get it in the morning And they broke off 3 bolts in the pan and changed me $114.00 to look at it and shop supplies. They never said anything to me about the bolts being broke off at the time I was in there shop. And I asked about rebuilt one and he said it would take a week. I would not use them at all very over priced and very rude not nice people...

Joey is the best. My daughters car was close to being totaled after it was fixed it wasn’t running right Joey of tip top transmissions proved the engine was ruined from the accident. Replaced the engine and helped get the insurance to pay for it. A year later after my daughter moved to California engine trouble again. He got involved with The California repair shop and warranty company to make sure we were taken care of and engine was replaced again. These people care about their customers wherever they go A PLUS service and the customer does come first. Can’t say enough above and beyond.

A few months ago i had my Honda Transmission repaired, price was fair and the repairs took about a week. The guys were really friendly and helpful. Last week i noticed that my car was leaking and my transmission started to act up a little. I brought it back in to the shop and they fixed my leak quickly and that took care of the little shifting issue i was having. Thanks for the quick attention, and standing behind your work!

Great shop. On a road trip to the grand canyon, fixed our transmission over night and even gave us a ride. Super friendly staff. Went above and beyond.

I did not find their service to be prompt or communicative. It took 2 days before they got to my car, then an additional day to get it repaired, and they promised they would call with updates and never did. Im sure their work is good and fair priced, but I was not really that impressed with their customer service compared to other general automotive places Ive visited.

Around $5,000 spent for a rebuilt transmission that only lasted about 25,000 miles and they wont cover it. Nope, they want more money to fix it. pretty messed up in my opinion. the truck wont be going back to this place thats for sure.

I first called another shop, the one you always see on TV, they said I needed my transmission replaced, On the phone Herb told me that they need to do a full diagnosis to determine the problem, he sounded so caring on the phone, I decide to let them tow my car in to check it out. I had a horrible experience with this place! My transmission went out in Park City and another mechanic quoted me around $4200. When I called Tip Top Transmissions, they told me they could rebuild it for around $2800 and they would even pick it up. That sounded great until the bill ended up being $4500! Then, with a very short warranty (12k miles/1 year) I moved out of state. They wouldnt honor their warranty on something THEY did wrong (a seal improperly put on caused my Lexus to leak transmission fluid) because they knew I was about 1300 miles away. I had to pay over $300 to have another repair shop fix it. They refused to help out on that cost. Shame on them!

Herb was very forthcoming with me through the whole process. Worked with me through the whole process when I decided to outsource on some of the labor.

Rebuilt my F250 6-speed and installed new clutch.

We took our VW Routan to Tip Top Transmission (as per Utah Imports suggestion) after it got stuck in 2nd gear in September 2014. They recommended a transmission service and software update. The man there said that the update was 99% likely to fix our problem. The day it was ready, I paid about $350, thanked them, got in my car, and drove away. As I was merging onto I-15, I realized, shock of all shocks, the van was stuck in 2nd gear! I had just paid them all that money to fix the problem with their 99% odds reassurance and my van was literally exhibiting that very problem I had just paid them to fix! I couldnt believe it. I thought they would refund my money, but they said no, they had to do the update, etc, and they reminded me that he had only said 99%. Nothing was different in my van as far as I am concerned. Nothing. I quite simply feel like they played a joke on me and I paid them to have my van sit there for a week. It wasnt sitting well with me at all as I dont like feeling like Ive been had, so I called them a bit later. The man went on and on about how they had to do what they did, they really did service the vehicle, though there was no way to prove it, and we are the 1% that has the bad luck to have the car that their 99% fix did not fix. He used the analogy that when you update your iPhone, it doesnt necessarily feel different. NICE, but those updates are FREE! The shop is very grungy and their office area appears to be disorganized. You would never want to have to wait there for service. Many people seem to have had good experiences, but my husband and I cannot recommend Tip Top Transmission based on ours.
